Book Description
Vetiveria is one of the most versatile genera in plant kingdom. For example, the species Vetiveria zizanoides produces oderous roots from which a precious essential oil is distilled and used in a variety of applications from perfumery to ethnopharmacology. The same roots give the plant particular characteristics that make it a valuable natural barrier against erosion. Vetiveria: The Genus Vetiveria describes the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, essential oil biogenesis and chemical composition, ethnopharmacology and distillation. The book covers the production of plants for oil exploration, the use of Vetiver as an ecological tool against erosion, flood, soil pollution, and many other applications.

Book Description
The third edition of this classic reference work has been revised and updated to contain all the recent advances in this fast-developing field of study. Cutting through a maze of technical language, it provides: over 2,800 clear and concise entries with full cross-referencing; coverage of modern and classical astronomy; names of constellations, stars, galaxies, asteroids, comets, and nebulae; terms relating to astrophysics and cosmology; entries on telescopes and observatories; an explanation of abbreviations and acronyms; and information on space missions. Comprehensive and accessible, The Penguin Dictionary of Astronomy is the work of its kind for students and professionals.
Customer Reviews:
Handy.......2001-05-01
This book is one of the first *serious* non-hardcover, no-pictures purse-size dictionary of modern Astronomy that I've yet found.
Although the entries can tend to be quite short, it lists entries from "AAO" (Anglo-Australian Observatory) to "ZZ Ceti star." As this is the Third Edition, Jacqueline Mitton has had time to refine, streamline, and update the information within.
This is a fun book to browse through; it's in a straightforward dictionary style. There are some helpful Tables in the back, the usual stuff of Astronomy books: Units of measurements and conversion factors; brightest stars in the night sky; full list of the Constellations; characteristics of the inner and outer planets, tables on the natural satellites and rings of the planets.
The entries are well written, and with a style that shows Jacqueline Mitton enjoys her work.
Note: The book is British (Look for "The Plough", "The Big Dipper", "Ursa Major", "Big Bear")
Recommended for people of any age and background who have even the slightest interest in Astronomy.

Book Description
In this wise and lyrical book about landscapes of the desert and the mind, Edward Abbey guides us beyond the wall of the city and asphalt belting of superhighways to special pockets of wilderness that stretch from the interior of Alaska to the dry lands of Mexico.
Customer Reviews:
Better places to start with Abbey.......2005-03-27
In some ways this book reflected a more mature Edward Abbey than was present in Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness but in many other ways though he just came across as older (not wiser.)
Since this book is a collection of individual pieces and not a unified whole it is to be expected that they will range from one another in both topic and quality - with that in mind I would warn any potential reader that Abbey's best work of the collection is not at the front so don't be overly discouraged by the overly long stream of consciousness `A Walk in the Desert Hills' or the overly self-involved and nostalgic `How It Was.'
Generally speaking, Abbey is at his worst in this book when his eyes are turned inward and conversely he is at his best when his eyes are turned outward over the desert landscapes which he loved in essays like `Desert Images', `The Damnation of a Canyon' and `On the High Edge of Texas.'
If you haven't yet read any books by Abbey before I would highly recommend that you start with Desert Solitaire instead of this one. While Beyond the Wall isn't terrible it does lack some of the charm of Desert Solitaire, the continuity and narrative structure makes it easier for the reader to identify with the work, with Abbey himself and with the desert which he so loved.
Best of Abbey.......2002-06-19
The first two pieces in this collection provide the best introduction to Abbey I can think of. "A Walk in the Desert Hills" describes a 115-mile walk across the Sonoran Desert, in search of adventure, wisdom, and water. "How It Was" describes his first incursions into the Four Corners and Glen Canyon area, before the pavement came. "How It Was" will make you understand what got Abbey intoxicated with the desert. "A Walk ..." tells why it was still more magical than bourbon even thirty years later. For these two pieces alone this is my favorite of Abbey's books. The remainder of the pieces in the book, which describe forays around the Colorado River region, the Sea of Cortez, and a rafting trip in northern Alaska, are pure, delightful gravy.
Beautiful Simplicity.......2002-05-23
Although Desert Solitaire is Abbey's most popular work of non-fiction and is an undeniable American masterpiece, Beyond the Wall in many ways surpasses it in its praise of the beauty and granduer of nature and as a meditation on humanity's place in it. As a work primarily concerned with Abbey's experiences on several hiking/camping trips alone in the Desert, from Southern Colorado, and West Texas, through theNew Mexico and Arizona wilds to the Sea of Cortez, the reader is allowed an glimpse into his psyche that is unsurpassed in these quiet revelations, documented in many a lonely, but not lonesome walk. In Beyond the Wall, Abbey is closest to his comparison with Thoreau, in the way that the simple description of Nature itself is the focus of this work. In many ways this book is both a eulogy and a celebration of Glen Canyon and raw unspoiled Nature.
Whether narrating "a Walk Through Desert Hills" or a "float trip down the doomed Glen Canyon, Abbey's awareness of the subtle force of nature is everpresent, and is expressed in the metaphoric image of Freedom and Wilderness versus industrial insanity and slavery. In many ways, what is beyond the wall is the possibility of our unmeditated communion with nature. And although this wall seems forminable, it can be overcome simply by venturing off the beaten path into a wilderness unknown to many. His solution lies in the simple concept of reestablishing an intimate relationship with Nature, which is deprived of so many today. Thus, in becoming acquainted with our environments and surroundings we will be much more involved in saving what is there. The case of Glen Canyon is a sad illustration of this, for despite its stunning beauty and granduer, which Abbey claimed surpassed even that of the Grand Canyon, it was destroyed simply because not enough people had experienced it and too few cared enough to save it.
In reading the essays in Beyond the wall, Ed introduces us to one way that we can all get beyond the walls that alienate us from nature and ultimately ourselves. And since this book can only guide us so far, it is we that must take the next step and decide on what side of the wall we want to live our lives.
Why walk in a desert? Why get off the sofa at all?.......2001-06-27
This is a fine collect of 10 early hikes and float trips Abbey made mostly in the high deserts of the American Southwest. The last takes place in Alaska. In "A Walk in the Desert Hills" Abbey tells of a solo hike across more than 100 miles with only his backpack and the hope that water will be found in natural tanks. What, the reader may ask, compels a man to undertake such a trek with only a belief that salvation lies ahead in a bowl shaped stone (tanks) filled with rain water, and then further on, perhaps another, and hopefully another still? Throughout the book he answers this question by showing us the hidden beauty of slot canyons, how the Colorado looked beneath the flooded Glen Canyon before the dam and shares with us his discovery of petroglyphs and pictographs whose meanings still remains unknown. This is Abbey when his desert world was still new, before the roads and bridges and dams he hated changed it all. This is the world beyond the wall, his world. "Beyond the wall of the unreal city, beyond the security fences topped with barbed wire and razor wire, beyond the asphalt belting of superhighways, beyond the cemented banksides of our temporarily stopped and mutilated rivers, beyond the rage of lies that poison the air, there is another world waiting for you. It is the old true world of the deserts, the mountains, the forests, the islands, the shores, the open plains, Go there ...into the ancient blood-thrilling primeval freedom of those vast and democratic vistas. You will never understand the secret essence of the word freedom until you do."
Abbey was as about as free as a man can get.
abbey's finest hike.......1999-11-01
ed abbey's tromp through the american wilderness in search of a definitive ideology and a few tankfuls of water allow the reader to believe in the underdog's points of view......whether you agree with them or not. Awesome book!!!!

Book Description
The author of The Encyclopedia of Surfing returns with this definitive anthology of the best-ever writing about surfing, illustrated with classic and cutting-edge photographs and artwork. Hip and eclectic, the collection speaks to surfing's widespread and longstanding appeal: from Mark Twain's nineteenth-century description in Roughing It to Susan Orlean's essay on girl surfers in Maui and Tom Wolfe's "The Pump House Gang."
This anthology covers it all-from early surfing literature to descriptions of the sport's most colorful characters, from hair-raising tales of big-wave surfing to an exploration of surf culture.

R. Crumb, Daniel Duane, William Finnegan, Rick Griffin, Frederick Kohner, Jack London, Herman Melville, Susan Orlean, Charles Schulz, Mark Twain, and Tom Wolfe

for those flat days.......2007-05-05
When I can't surf because I am away from the ocean or the waves are flat, I like to read surf inspired books, etc. This is one great compilation of such writings. The range and variety of works is great and I loved them all.
Surf lit!.......2006-12-04
For all of the literate surfers out there (yes, they are legion!), this is an exceptionally enjoyable read. Great for an historical perspective on the art and sport of surfing as well as authentic insights on surfing from many perspectives. I have read additional material from the authors presented in this volume and am grateful to Matt Warshaw for the introduction.

excellent reading:informative, entertaining, interesting, due to the diversity of the collected articles that span generations, time, numerous points of view and emotions, well organized. I have purchased numerous copies as gifts to share with old surf buddies!

An intriguing tale of reality entanlged with the spirits........2001-07-18
In this story, Tod finds himself troubled by many things. when he compassionatly burries a fox in the ground, the fox spirit offers him a deal. that Tod can come perminatly Fox and escape the complications of the human world. As a fox, Tod loves every minute, but when he returns to his human form, he regrets everything.
The only bad thing about this book is that it is a little confusing at the end.
An unusual but engaging story. Definitely worth reading........1996-12-08
Red foxes were brought to Australia in the nineteenth
century, dragged from their native land against their will.
Tod, a young Australian boy, was also dragged from
his native land against his will when his family moved
across the country to live with his grandmother. The
foxes survived in a hostile land; whether Tod can do the
same is the focus of this book.
Ms. Rubinstein paints Tod's family in vivid strokes, the
Australian landscape no less vividly. She brings the
supernatural elements into the story so subtly at first
that by the time the *really* unusual things start
happening, they blend right into the flow of the narrative.
Against this backdrop, Tod wrestles with the frustrations
of being displaced, of watching his family try to hold
together, and of being forced into a mold he doesn't fit
in school. The problems are familiar to any teenager, or
anyone who's ever been one.
Tod's struggles are mirrored by the local foxes. No
attempt is made to glamourize their lives -- they are
shot at and hunted by the local gangs, looked down upon
as pests and invaders by almost everyone, and hated by
the farmers. Yet they survive because they must.
Their lives and Tod's intersect when he buries a dead fox
he has found strung up on a fence. His respect earns him
a visit from a fox spirit, who offers him the chance to
become a wild fox. This escape from his troubles is very
attractive, at first, but he finds that his human ties are
not so easy to give up. His deliberations, and the
resolution of the book, are very well done.
The supernatural and the natural are strong forces in
"Foxspell." The natural elements are well-researched
and accurate (from Australian fauna to fox behavior), and
the supernatural is well-integrated and not too pervasive.
It leaves plenty of room for the human story. However, if
you have a particular aversion to either of these two
subject areas, this book is probably not for you.
Any review of this book would be incomplete without some
mention of the writing. Ms. Rubinstein's style is clear,
evocative, and powerful. She not only tells a good story,
but she tells it well. The subject matter may not appeal
to everyone, but if you like what I've written about in
this review, have no doubts that you will enjoy reading
"Foxspell."

500 pickups, vans, SUVs and wagons listed - A must to have!.......2001-01-24
If you are in the market for a new small truck, this is a reference guide that you should have to make an intelligent choice before buying. Please note that the publisher, "IntelliChoice," is using the word "small" in comparison to a Mack or a Freightliner. In this guide you will find more than 500 pickups, vans, SUVs and wagons listed. The guide begins with more than 100 pages of very useful information that helps you understand the economics of buying and owning a vehicle, ie. insurance, finance cost, leasing, safety, tips on buying and more are covered. As you know, the purchase price is only one factor to consider before a purchase. Insurance, maintenance, repairs, depreciation, financing and fuel are also some of the costs that need to be considered. This wonderfully useful guide also gives you a black and white photo of each model, the dealer and list price, a unique "IntelliChoice" value code (Excellent to Poor), projected ownership cost per year, and much more information on each vehicle.
"IntelliChoice" guides retain their usefulness and value over the years if you decide later to purchase a used vehicle. I have guides that go back to 1993 and they are immensely valuable when buying a used vehicle for myself or a friend. I also plan to keep these guides with the hope that I will be around 20 or 30 years from now and I will have a guide that covers all the vehicles sold in America for a particular year. Wouldn't it be nice to have a guide today that shows you photos and evaluations of all the vehicles made and sold in 1969 or 1970? Some prospective buyers may baulk at the price, but when you consider that you will be spending between $15,000 to $30,000 for a new vehicle then the purchase price of this unique guide is only a minuscule .002% of your cost. Highly Recommended.

Book Description
In recent years, the value of the U.S. dollar has fluctuated wildly. Japanese investors have lost billions in U.S. markets, causing an almost unprecedented run on the dollar. The leaders of the world currency markets were forced to band together to push up the value of the U.S. dollar. Tug of War: Why You Should Care About the Global Currency Crisis is the riveting story of this flow of money around the globe and what it means for us today. In 1991, the Mexican government tied the value of the peso to the dollar. As the peso slid and almost vanished, the fortunes of the dollar waned. Investors around the world, especially the Japanese, lost confidence in the dollar, creating a soaring yen and dragging down the value of the dollar even more. Subsequent events in the world currency markets pulled the dollar in even more directions: rogue traders lost billions on bad deals; the European Union began determining the value of its own currency; Japanese banks admitted enormous, previously concealed, losses. The tug of war continued. Paul Erdman, as well-known for his ability to predict financial markets as for his ability to write a suspenseful story, clearly explains the tangled basis and continuing strength of the currency crisis, gives his predictions about the future, and offers advice to market masters on the direction they should pursue. Significantly updated for this paperback edition, Tug of War, as compelling as any novel, is certain to be one of the most important financial books of this or any other year. Readers will not want to be left out when Erdman predicts the winner in this economic battle.

The "Asian Contagion" Reviewed........2004-08-21
A simple yet far reaching book about the "Asian Contagion" and currency crisis of the late '90's. You should first read "The Vandals Crown", then this book, followed by "The Chastening". You'll then have a complete and chronological history of numerous currency crises involving the IMF, World Bank, and the major geopolitical figures. Fascinating foundation of fundamentals in action for anyone interested in trading the FOREX markets.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Money and the Space Economy Contributor list Pietro Alessandrini Leslie Budd Gordon Clark Sheila Dow Richard T. Harrison Alan Hudson Roger Lee Colin Mason Jane Pollard David J. Porteous Barney Warf Neil Wrigley Alberto Zazzaro Money is central to understanding the space economy. Not only does money itself have its own geographies, but these in turn help to shape the geographies of economic activity more generally. Across the global economy banking systems and money markets are being restructured. A new economic geography of money and finance is emerging, reflecting, among other things, the momentous changes that are taking place in the world's financial systems, particularly the impact of globalisation, deregulation, privatisation and technological change. Money and the Space Economy brings together leading geographers and economists working on money to highlight the changing geographies of banking, the forces underpinning and threatening international financial centres, the relationship between financial systems, business and the local economy, and the financial causes and consequences of the retreat of the state. With case studies drawn from United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, Money and the Space Economy redraws the map of local, regional, national and international financial spaces. Book Description
This book places money, power and space at the center of the issues surrounding the restructuring of the global economy. Sixteen geographers, economists, political scientists and sociologists drawn from all over the world present new work on the production and consumption of money. The central theme of the book is that modern systems of money have a crucial spatial dimension: money is creating new geographies of power and influence, and these in turn are generating new systems of money. Following an introductory overview by the editors, the book is divided into three parts concerned with the geopolitics of money, different national geographies of money, and with the culture and politics of money and markets. Case studies and examples range from Nigeria to Asia, and from Wall Street to the City of London. Money has been neglected in the social sciences: this book introduces a series of new concepts and powerful analyses of key importance in understanding the world of money and the dynamics of modern society.
