What's in a name? A title like Understanding LeadershipCompetencies implies a theoretical treatise on the radical notion thatcompetencies (a.k.a. capabilities, a.k.a. success factors) can be defined for executives and managers. Or perhaps the title belongs on a how-to guide to identifying such competencies - the relative merits of focus groups and Behavioral Event Interviews, the problems of defining the competencies measurably, the issues of core and level-specific models, and other thorny questions. Or it could even herald a thought-provoking analysis of competency-based leadership development, including methodologies for aligning an organization's strategic goals with the assessment, education, performance management, and succession of senior and emerging leaders.

In this case, Understanding Leadership Competencies is Option D: None of the Above. Instead, Guggenheimer and Szulc are pursuing an equally laudable goal: present a convincing leadership competency model, then help readers build those competencies through resources and self-assessment techniques. For the aspiring leader, such a book can be a godsend, particularly if it's brief, cheap, and based on an incisive model. Understanding Leadership Competencies is 88 pages long. It sells for $10.95. And its model is - well, see for yourself.

This way madness lies. Passion, Courage, and Energy/Vitality/Enthusiasm are so closely related as to be identical, and are even defined in terms of each other (e.g., "People who have energy, vitality and enthusiasm are involved and pursue goals passionately.") Seven of the competencies are qualities, but two (Building a Team and Setting Priorities) are activities that should result from a quality. And Humor is famously difficult to define; as E.B. White once noted, "Humor can be dissected, as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind." The thought of constructing behavioral indicators for Humor boggles the mind. "This individual elicits workplace merriment with his/her quips, japes, and drollery." "This individual tells high-performing jokes about chickens, ducks, and similar winged fauna." "This individual understands that the correct definition of `irony' is not `like iron'."

Ultimately these competencies are never tangibly defined. Although Guggenheimer and Szulc use standard dictionary explanations (literally; they actually quote Webster's Dictionary throughout), some leaders may have qualms about developing a Vision competency defined in part as "something seen in a dream, trance, or ecstasy." Furthermore, readers are offered no substantive ways to measure or model behaviors associated with the nine competencies. Instead, Understanding Leadership Competencies provides elementary questions readers should use to define the competencies themselves, such as, "In your view, what is leadership?", "What should [our team] be doing more of?", and "Do all the employees in your organization understand how vision relates directly to them? Cite three examples." Most importantly for a business environment, the competencies are never connected to outputs, high performance, or ROI. These are not competencies with organizational impact.

Arguably they needn't be. The authors have deliberately chosen a self-defining, extremely personal conception of leadership, to help you "bring a different leadership perspective to your professional, community, family, and civic responsibilities." But if a leader's competencies are to have any genuine effect, then they must be linked to the requirements of the people and organization the leader leads. Understanding Leadership Competencies might give you some tools to help you articulate your own values and goals. It won't do as much to help you lead.

J. and CindyLou, to tell the story of Robishaw's and her husband's move to rural Northern Michigan nearly two decades ago. The three commiserate about the Robishaws' trials, learning experiences, and misconceptions. With the help of J. J. and CindyLou, Robishaw simply, often hilariously, tells her story and offers no one-size-fits-all approach to homesteading. She also describes, in great detail, gardening tips, how to construct a solar oven, recipes, ways to become more self-sufficient by growing your own food, how to build a simple structure such as a home or outbuilding, and how to deal with critters. While filled with practical how-to information, the real joy of Homesteading Adventures is the story of the Robishaws life and experiences, told with gentle humor and affection, and mercifully free of self-righteousness. It's a real treat to read.

"The entire book! There are some chunks of interspersed instructional writing, but otherwise the entire book is written in bad dialogue between two fictitious characters! They're spunky and bright-eyed and new to homesteading and have lots of questions! So you get to read all about their adventures as though you're overhearing a conversation between them! And they say everything with exclamation points!"

Wonderful Introduction To "The Road Less Traveled"!.......2002-06-13

Adherents of the `60s counterculture back-to-the-land philosophy will find much to enjoy and savor in this humorous but fact-filled book on homesteading self-sufficiency. I am lucky enough to have had a personally autographed copy of author Sue Robishaw's wonderful book "Homesteading Adventures" sitting comfortably on one of my bookshelves for years. I recently re-read it, and found it as refreshing and as practical a guide to exploring the possibilities of walking on the self-sufficient side of the dirt road as one might find out there in the Ethernet. Miss Robishaw uses the device of two fictional neophytes to pose the important questions regarding how one begins the process of shifting gears and thought processes toward increasing levels of personal responsibility for living "off the grid". And, by the time one is through casually rummaging through the pages, you find that she has cracked more than a single smile or two onto your face while also relating to you a lot of important and useful data about the possibilities for living a less materialistic and more user-friendly alternative lifestyle.

In these days of ever greater complexity and ever more complete dependence on others for the woof and warp of our daily existence, for food, water, shelter, sewage, electricity, entertainment, transportation, and clothing, one is perhaps a bit startled to discover that we can each be much more actively and "proactively" involved in this process, that each of us can garner much of what we need to survive and prosper as human beings on the surface of the planet. It often comes as a surprise because many of us are so deeply embedded in the ethos of the material culture that surrounds us that we rarely are able to independently determine or recognize how many other alternative ways to live exist, and which are there for us to employ if we have the vision, nerve, and energy to do so. In her own way, the author helps us to come to this conclusion very quietly, gently, and with more than a little humor. She is well grounded, and along the way shows us how we can do everything from build our own cabin or earth home to how to make a small but eficient greenhouse to how to design, build, and erect a functioning windmill.

While Sue Robishaw is certainly not a self-sufficiency visionary like Scott and Helen Nearing ("The Good Life"), she does provide a vital and valuable service to the reader by offering a lot of practical lessons regarding how to begin and sustain one's journey toward greater personal responsibility for one's own way of living. It is said that many millions of Americans continue to examine the basis of their own lives with an inchoate and poorly articulated dissatisfaction with the materialistic way of life they are currently embroiled in. To the extent a single book can make a practical difference in helping such folk recognize, understand, and act on this alternative vision regarding the manner in which one lives his or her life, this book is a terrific aid and a practical how-to manual rolled into one paperback volume. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

Ideas for homesteading in the frozen North.......2002-01-06

This book is a collection of ideas for homesteaders or others who want to live simply off the land. Robishaw describes a wide variety of projects and activities that she and her husband have done to survive and thrive that come with a minimum cost to the pocketbook and the environment. These include a windmill powered well, a solar powered electrical system, a solar cooker, a solar food dryer, outhouses, homemade wine and vinegar, gardening, saving seeds, and making maple syrup. Robishaw presents the information in the form of a series of dialogues between CindyLou and JJ, a pair of newcomers to the woods, and Sue, an old-hand at homesteading. The dialogues are meant to be cute and humorous, and perhaps lighten the tone of the text. However, I found them a bit tiresome and contrived in places. The book is not filled with detailed plans for constructing equipment, although there are a few useful diagrams. Instead, its value is in stirring up ideas in the minds of the readers, and giving encouragement to go ahead and try something new because it just might work. Set in Northern Michigan, it is especially relevant for readers from far northern climates.

Great Story!.......2000-04-12

This book was a joy to read. Tucked within the true-to-life and often humorous accounts of the fictional couple's move to ruraldom are excellent instructions and guidelines for homesteading.

I highly recommend this book, although I wouldn't advise its use as a primary resource for homesteading.

High praise for Kanze's "NOTES FROM NEW ZEALAND".......1998-03-03

"NOTES FROM NEW ZEALAND" by Edward Kanze, is an entertaining and educational book about travel and New Zealand natural history. The author succeeds not only in bringing the reader along on his adventures, but also in introducing them to and teaching them about much of New Zealand's unique ecology. Kanze traveled to New Zealand as a naturalist pursuing a personal quest to find and see three rare endemic species-- the kiwi, the tuatara, and a type of New Zealand frog which lacks ear drums and vocal sacs. During the author's three trips to this island country he explored it alone and as a member of several scientific research expeditions. As you read, you begin to realize that you too are developing a fondness for the country and charming people much as Ed Kanze did. From slogging along the Milford Track high in the mountains to laboring to catch tuatara in the forest after midnight on remote offshore islands, you share in the humor, the victories, and the failures which all came together creating this rich tapestry of events.

"NOTES FROM NEW ZEALAND" shares Kanze's adventures in a journal format. This style presents plenty of information, while still maintaining a refreshing narrative. Kanze certainly provides an intriguing glimpse into the bounteous treasures which New Zealand has preserved on her green shores for these thousands of years. One cannot help but consider what it would be like to embark upon a personal journey to New Zealand in order to experience these wonders first-hand. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in adventure travel or natural history. Kanze is an excellent author who has penned several other books, and to whom I look for new works in the future.

Great Book.......2007-08-12

This is a great book with workouts which definitely do challenge you. The program uses a broad range of different exercises to help you become fit, as well as a good stretching routine to help you become more flexible. It also features a section on nutrition as well, to help you orient your eating habits to acheive your fitness goals.

It features workout charts which are set up to give you a routine to follow which switches every couple of weeks, so you don't get bored with your workout. The program is a year-round program, and the workout charts are set up accordingly, so you know what you are supposed to be doing on which days.

The reason I gave it a 4-star rating was for two reasons. (1) The workout charts seem as though they weren't edited very well, and can sometimes be confusing. (2) People with very hectic schedules might find it hard to fit this workout into their lives. The book does provide a few faster workouts, in case you're traveling and need something on the go which will still push you; however, I think this book was written for people who are serious about getting fit and are committed to dedicating time to get there.

I'm about to enter the Army in a non-combat role but am still required to pass the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test). Not being in the best of shape, I was looking for something that would get me in Army condition ASAP. I tried many different workout routines that didn't help at all. After hearing about Stew Smith from a friend, I started following one of his workouts. Although the workout was tough, especially for me, I was AMAZED at how quickly I was able to progress. With that, I purchased this book and continue to be very satisfied. In addition to the workouts, the book is chockful of very useful information. With just a simple adjustment in my running technique, my knees no longer ache for days after a run. My advice - if you want to get in good shape for any purpose - following this book is the way to do it!!!!

The workouts are tough, which is exactly what I wanted. The book could have been much better organized. You'll find yourself confused sometimes on what you're supposed to do - for example an exercise in the workout chart might have a different name in the explanation section. Like most any other routine, you'll get out of it what you put into it. You'll definately need additional material on nutrition. His chapter on that is very limited.

Quite out-of-date, but great material nevertheless.......2002-04-27

This 700-page guidebook dates back to 1995, covering Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. As a result, it is inevitably out-of-date: much has changed in the countries of North Africa, in their situation and in facilities for the traveler, especially in Libya and Algeria. Some sections on how to get around etc. are surely out-of-date. Yet, this book remains a truly essential tool for anyone traveling to, or simply interested in, North Africa. The sections on culture and society are tremendously useful and extremely well-written, including a beautiful coloured-photographs section on Moroccan Arts & Crafts. In terms of travel, this remains the only Lonely Planet guidebook covering Algeria (with over 90 pages on the country !), and is recommendable for anyone wishing to travel to that country. For the collector of guidebooks, this is a masterpiece, densely filled with information, and superbly researched and written. For the practical-minded traveler simply going to Morocco, Tunisia or Libya, however, LP guidebooks exist for those three individual countries, and may be a better - if heavier - choice. Nevertheless, it should be stressed: this books remains a great achievement, in Lonely Planet's great successes in covering the world.

I just finished "Caitlin's Country" and I REALLY liked it! It was nicely paced and kept me wanting to know what was next so I couldn't put it down! What a pleasant surprise from a new author! Although as an adult, I could have used more detail, I think it's very well paced for a teen or young adult reader. I'd think it would be especially appealling to teenage girls who have recently been forced to move or to live with a different parent. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to any teen.

As a side benefit, some of the English/Australian terminology explained in it helped me as a Texan to understand some of the terminology used in the "Harry Potter" books that I've read. Quite an unexpected benefit!

If you want an introduction to international economics this book is not what you would want. If, on the other hand, you need both the key concepts of classical trade theory and a comprehensive overview of the issues of new trade theory, all nice and neat in unified notation, this book is a must.
