Book Description
When not handled correctly, performance appraisals can turn into nerve-wracking confrontations. If employees and managers aren't on the same page about expectations and performance, the working relationship can be seriously harmed. Productive Performance Appraisals gives readers all the easy-to-use tools they need to conduct an effective review -- including sample dialogs, checklists, and forms. The book shows readers how to:
* plan and organize the appraisal session
* set short- and long-term goals
* elicit the employee's input
* handle problems and "sticky" subjects such as promotions and disagreements.
Now completely updated, the book has new sections on rating employees, justifying scores, and weaving disciplinary language into the review. Readers will also find guidance on developing career plans, keeping consistent records, communicating changes in roles, how reviews are used when determining layoffs, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Averge book, For the beginner.......2003-01-30
This book has some good ideas regarding performance review, but is more general than necessary. Could use better examples. About a third of the book is "filler", apparently an attempt to hit 100 pages.
Quick reference for busy supervisors.......2000-07-07
This is an excellent, easy-to-read booklet that we recommend to all new supervisors in our company. It highlights charts, facts, checklists, guidelines which makes it easy to refer to after completing it. Good examples are given for situations and exercises for the reader to complete as well. We are ordering extra copies for the high demand for this book.

Description:
Drawing from the literature on social dilemmas, I develop a process model identifying the conditions under which peer evaluation, when implemented over multiple rounds, might be expected to lead to increasingly counter-productive team dynamics over time. Noting that peer evaluation encompasses a set of behaviors just like those being assessed, I generate a number of hypotheses grounded on the proposition that shared perceptions regarding three system dimensions - rating purpose, rater accountability and evaluation regularity - influence the implicit incentive structures governing team members' rating behaviors, and, as such, the prevalence of intentional rating distortion in teams. The prevalence of intentional distortion, in turn, is posited to influence the degree to which direct and indirect rating-distortion experiences pervade the team environment - what I refer to as ambient peer-rating distortion. Finally, the level of team ambient peer-rating distortion is posited to influence the prevalence of actual intentional distortion in subsequent rounds of peer evaluation, and to attenuate and suppress any beneficial effect of peer evaluation on cooperation-related team processes.

Book Description
The Rio Grande Delta is fabulously rich in wildflowers and other plant life. Lying in the geographically and environmentally diverse region common to southern Texas and northern Mexico, it supports plants that also grow in Central America and throughout Mexico, the Gulf Coastal plains, the South Texas Plains, and the Chihuahuan Desert. Plants of the Rio Grande Delta provides an accessible and reliable identification guide to all of the plants, excluding grasses, of the region--some 823 species. In clear, nontechnical language, Alfred Richardson gives a brief description of each species, along with its range, habitat, and general blooming time. Over two hundred superb color photographs offer quick and easy field identification, while line drawings illustrate notable characteristics of the plants. This volume expands and updates Alfred Richardson's previous book, Plants of Southernmost Texas, published in 1990 by the Gorgas Science Foundation. It will be an essential field guide for everyone interested in South Texas flora, from winter visitors and Valley residents to professional botanists.

Customer Reviews:
Good but not excelent!!.......2007-03-31
This is a good book. It goes straight to the point... good motivational thoughts! However, it is so short (36 half pages) that it seems rather a short essay than a book. I would have wanted to see some more anedoctes and more biography from Michael Jordan's life.
Overall, a good book.
The essence of a winner..........2006-01-27
The most amazing thing about this book is it's simplicity. What's new in the book? nothing, but it's the pairing of Jordan, the icon, with simple core value that makes it a wonderful read.
Jordan's message is very simple, follow your heart and will add strong values and you can accomplish any goal in life.
This is a book to be kept handy at all times...
And the secret of success is..........2005-10-04
...that there is no secret. Michael Jordan is probably the greatest basketball player of all time, so when such an accomplished man speaks on the achievement of excellence, it is worth the effort to pay attention. In a short 36-page read, Jordan gives advice that resonates far beyond sports, and applies just the same to academic, business and personal areas of life.
Discipline, foresight and sacrifice make up Jordan's own triangle offense against the obstacles one meets on the road to excellence. I was glad to see he made the observation that people in this country only see the end result - the final payoff - completely ignoring the backbreaking work it took to reach that end. You see it everyday - an honest effort done in by a lack of foresight and pie-in-the-sky goals. People want the payoff without putting down the deposit, and as a result a lot of potential is nipped in the bud. Hard work alone does not guarantee, but in the end that is all you can do. Excellence, then, is not a goal, but a process.
Homer wrote 'The Iliad' thousands of years ago, but there is a line within that still holds true today, and particularly here. A young hero there muses that of all qualities in a person - bravery, wisdom, God-given strength - nothing matters so much as heart. Jordan echoes that sentiment - talent alone will not do the trick, and his achievements confirm he was right. Heart measures the gap between the hall-of-famer and the might-have-been.
The Greatest Basketball Player of All-Time Speaks........2005-04-07
I CAN'T ACCEPT NOT TRYING is a small inspiration book written by the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. Jordan had an unbelievable career in the NBA before retiring, tried playing major league baseball, came back to the NBA to lead the Chicago Bulls to a few more championships, then retired again, then came out of retirement again to play for the Washington Wizards--a team he had owned for over a year, before retiring for a third time in 2003. This little book was published just prior to Jordan's first return to basketball after his first "retirement". It was one of many items to fuel the media hype about his return.
There really isn't very much here. The book is only 36 pages long, is divided up into 6 sections, and includes a few posed pictures. The 6 sections are: goals, fears, commitment, teamwork, fundamentals, and leadership. Jordan shares a few personal thoughts and recollections in each section. Though there are one or two nuggets into the mind of Jordan, there isn't anything here that is new, original, or groundbreaking. Still, most people want to be like Mike and it is one of the few things Jordan ever wrote. It makes a nice little gift for Jordan fans, or someone who likes basketball and is getting ready to graduate high school.
Awe inspiring book by legend Michael Jordan.......2004-01-08
This is one of the best motivational books ever written. It is short, yet powerful. Michael Jordan truly is a hero of our time. Although I don't even follow basketball at all, the words he writes are poignant, powerful, inspirational and teaches all of us a lesson on how to live and how to aspire. Great book, for adults and children alike.

Best mystery I have ever read.......2006-03-08
Review by Haylee Lawler (age 11) for Reader Views (3/06)
What I liked about the story is when Kelly thinks that Eric is cute and that when she looks into his eyes every time, she thinks he likes her. This story was the best mystery I have ever read. The part where Kelly fought to keep her mother and the rest of the people on the boat safe was exciting. Kelly was brave and smart because when she tried to solve the case she had to not only keep the money and guns from her mother, she also had to keep them from the rest of the crew. I thought the book was great! It was also good when Kelly finds out the man's last name wasn't Smith, it was Newcomb, and where she finds that she doesn't need to tell her mom about it. The book was kind of scary but it was exciting to have a book this great to read all the time.
Well I have one more comment to make and that is when Kelly feels mad when Eric lies, and it freaks them out thinking he is dead, it made me mad at Eric too. Eric then went with the police to answer their questions.
A New Fan,
Haylee Lawler
Sorry it took Haylee a little longer to get this one read. We are starting soccer practice 2 times a week and it cuts into her reading time.
Once she had free time though she wouldn't put in down. She carried it everywhere she went, even into Wal-Mart as we shopped. She'd read while she walked. She only does that with books she really likes.
Cristy Lawler
Mother
a child's point of view.......2004-02-24
Mr. Perry came over to my house one day, gave me the book, and asked me to read it and do a review of what I thought of it. Here it is Mr. Perry : )
I am under 14 (this book is written for 10 - 14 year olds) and enjoyed this book very much. It is a thrilling mystery that I could not put down! (i stayed up till 3am reading it)
Kelly McCabe is quite a role model, she is adventurous, daring but carefully thinking things through, and is an eleven year old detective, which will appeal to kids.
For all girls (and possibly boys) who enjoy the Nancy Drew series, the new Kelly McCabe series will surely delight them.
After reading this book, i thought to myself that there was something slightly peculiar about it. I couldn't figure it out, but after myself thinking, "This would make a great movie" i found it. Mr. Perry is an award winning screen writer, and his books are very visual and audible. They make you imagine you are really there. (it would, in fact, make a fantastic movie)
However, Kelly's father in the book passed away a year ago, but she can hear him talking to her in her mind (giving her advice about clue's) which may bother some parents. There was one "D" word in the book when someone got mad.
But I would reccomend this boook to my friends and family. I can't wait for the second in the series. Nice work Mr. Perry!!!!
M.R.W.

"Might very well be the IRS's worst nightmare. . . . If there's a tax break allowed out there, it's in here."New York Daily News
Publishers Weekly called it "a can't-miss title." The New York Daily News praised it for "pushing the envelope" and taking "a consumerist approach that's helpful during all the other months before next April." This fully updated 20th edition contains all the latest tax changes and delivers more tax-saving tips than any other guide. It outlines the easiest, most practical strategies consumers can use to lower their taxes this year, next year, and beyondby focusing on hundreds of legal ways to preserve pretax income and profit.
Customer Reviews:
Was good, now outdated.......2006-12-20
This was a good book in 2001, but it's now getting dated. Still you can get lots of good information from it. It's a big book and has lots and lots of detail if your style is to learn yourself. I've turned to my accountant because I don't want to be a walking knowlege base, but this book is really good.
My own little loophole manual.......2004-08-18
Thank you, Jeffrey Scheppner, for giving us a level playing field when it comes to taxes!
Every tax law, loophole, and trap is spelled out in easy to understand English--even for non-rocket-scientists like myself.
I get his manual every year, and have not missed or misused a loophole yet!
Why look for a Tax break? When there is No income tax.......2004-04-03
There is no law to make a person liable to pay income tax. No one has put forth the research and "know in your heart it's the truth" information like Irwin Schiff's - "The Federal Mafia"
I personally have not paid income tax in over 8 years. I received one letter from the IRS to which I replied and informed them that I did not pay taxes for the years in question because I am under no obligation to do so (I included other statements with knowledge I gained from this amazing book.) I have never heard from them again & I never have had an IRS agaent come to my house. Don't let the IRS use their scare tatics to steal your hard-earned money, illegally seize your propery, and bank accounts. Ignornance of the average American is what they prey upon. Get the knowledge to See The Light.
Mr Schiff's book will greatly change your opinions of our Government. (NOT THE BOOK THIS REVIEW IS WRITTEN UNDER)
I highly recommed all of Irwin Schiff's books. Extremely imformative / easy to follow / and above all undoubtely proves that there is No Income Tax.
The IRS - "The greatest organized crime outfit of all time."
Somewhat Helpful But Misses the More Important Point.......2003-10-06
A really good tax book would tell you how complicated and unfair the current system really is. It would tell you that the current system costs Americans hundreds of billions of dollars annually in man hours for compliance and makes a parasitic class of politicians, lobbyists, lawyers and tax accountants quite rich. It is no wonder that books like this don't tell you any of that then is it? Instead of jumping through all kinds of hoops and frantically arranging your affairs to suit the taxing authorities why don't we demand a simplified system that puts all of these leaches out of work and puts our wealth to work creating jobs that make working people better off?
A book like this may be useful under the current system, but, there is the danger that it will keep you so busy chasing deductions and exemptions that you will forget what the real problem is.
This is a good book...BUT there are better ones available.......2003-01-30
Being a CPA and attorney,I am a saavy financial person and read a lot of tax and financial books.
How To Pay Zero Tax has been out for quite a while and is actually one of the first tax planning books that I have read. It is fairly comprehensive and actually better than most of the tax planning books out there. However, there are two main problems with it though for the average reader.
First, it is literally much too much. It has over 600 pages and some of it isn't clear. Mr.Schnepper tries to be all things to all people, which doesn't really succeed. I guess a point in all directions is a circle. In fact, despite its length, some of the discussion on topics tends to be too brief.
The second problem that has been noted by other reviewers is that this book hasn't be kept up to date. I guess Mr. Schnepper is "resting on his laurals."
Let me be clear about this: it's not that I disliked this book. It is just that there are a number of other, more up to date and better written tax books that I would recommend instead such as Lower Your Taxes: BIG TIME by a Mr. Botkin.

The IMF is like a credit union for countries. Each member makes a deposit of which 25% must be in the form of Gold or hard currency, this is called their quota. A member may receive a loan up too three times their quota amount. In an emergency the IMF could approve loans that exceed the 3X quota amount. The IMF central role is too provide policies and resources that give confidence to its members, make available emergency funds offsetting a financial panic, correct maladjustments in balance of payments between nations, and preventing destruction of national and international stability. IMF credibility is their contrarian's superiority providing advice and mandating policies forcing troubled countries too become more efficient and less corrupt. These governments would maintain their control over capital control. However, IMF can not control the inflow and outflow of foreign money. Fast growing countries like Thailand opened their financial systems to hot money. Hot money characteristics were a temptation that could turn into a panic because the money could be quickly be liquidated as a punishment for underperformance.
In the 90s, emerging markets trend was towards ending capital controls. Banks were acting strangely. Banks were increasing loans, at the same time as, the portfolio investors were retreating and selling out positions. 1992, the US Treasury Bond was below 6%. Investors were tempted by yield chasing seeking double digit yields in Malaysia. Japan was one of the strongest investor. Many of these investors borrowed low cost money from home markets and invested it into higher yield emerging market securities capturing 15 to 23% yields. This sets the stage for disaster in Thailand.
1997, Thailand central bank was armed with $38 billion in reserve dollars. The Thailand central bank believed $38 billion was more money than the speculator would be willing to bet against the baht. But through 1997, speculation increased against the baht as investors borrowed money to sell short on the currency betting that the currency would drop and they could buy back at cheaper levels. The Thailand central bank could defend the baht by raising interest rates increasing bond and bank deposit appeal. The second way to defend the Baht was to enter foreign currency exchanges and pump up the demand for the currency. The Bank of Thailand did a lot of buying because it was obligated to keeping the exchange of one dollar to 25 baht. Buying baht reduced the amount of Baht in circulation in the Thailand economy.
The Bank of Thailand was too clever by engaging in a currency swap. A swap involves a promise by participates too buy or sell a currency for another with a promise to trade the currencies back after a certain amount of time. The Bank of Thailand swap secretly amount to $23 billion. The Bank of Thailand reported that they had plenty of dollars for business. Problem solved! However, when the swap reversed the Thailand bank would be scarce of dollars to make payments on foreign loans come due. Most of the reserve dollars were committed for future transactions. The market continued selling short and the bank could not beat back the speculators. The Bank of Thailand had one more weapon, the Bank of Thailand order all 29 local and foreign banks to stop lending baht to foreigners. The baht would cease to flow outside of Thailand. Then suddenly Thai banks and corporations began selling baht in exchange for dollars to pay back short-term debts coming due. Foreign creditors were demanding immediate repayment of their loans when they came due. The Bank of Thailand could not cover the frantic baht selling and dollar buying, they did not have enough dollars in reserve.
The IMF demanded the Thai government create a budget surplus by increasing the value-added tax from 7 percent to 10 percent. The IMF insisted that Thailand devalue their currency and devaluation made increased exports and cheapened imports for foreign countries. The Thai economy did not need monetary tightening; the GDP dropped 10 percent and growth went to zero. Thailand was experiencing a recession. Unemployment rose to 6 percent. Thailand had banking system structural problems. Bank of Thailand had secretly loan $20 billion to ailing financial institutions attempting to stabilize these banks and prevent runs on deposits. The IMF insisted the Bank of Thailand stop the secret bailouts. IMF smartens up and supported a comprehensive guarantee on deposits and liability of financial institutions. Japan rescued Thailand with a $4 billion loan matching the IMF loan of $4 billion. The complete Thai bailout package totaling $17.2 billion.
More politics and culture than economics.......2005-08-03
This book attempts to show the Thai economy both before and after the "blood baht" of 1997. The book did an adequate commentary on the build up of the social and political structure but did not deliver on the economic side too much. It also gave the consequences of the crash in much the same way. In short the book is good to read if you want to see how the general population lived both before and after crash. If you want an in-depth critical look at the Thai economy and the underlying reasons for the crash as well as the economic ramifications afterwards then this book is not for you.
Clear, Well Written, Insightful and Comprehensive.......1999-01-17
This is the most interesting and easily read book I have ever come across dealing with issues of economic and political development. Thai politics and economics are complex and confusing. This book makes sense of the conflicting strains in Thailand and will enable even a novice to makes sense of of information from Thai newspapers. Fascinating for anyone interested in global economics or Thai culture.

From the supplier: Industrial nations are capable of providing developing countries with technical assistance, but the difficulty lies in distributing technical innovations to these countries. Utilizing the work of science and engineering college students, varying gross national products of industrial and developing countries, and management of research and development contracts are discussed.
