Excellent introduction to hydroponics.
Customer Reviews:
Wow! I see why this book sold 60,000 copies........2000-02-19
I'll make this short and sweet. Buy this book and read it; you'll be inspired to investigate the world of hydroponics. The author's enthusiasm comes across and makes one want to start experimenting before the book is finished. The full color pictures tell a story all their own. You can see what it's all about. I never considered that there were so many types of hydroponic methods. Dr. Sutherland extensively covers various plants and their needs. He recommends certain vegetables as his favorites and why. The big three mediums seem to be: perlite, vermiculite and "growool". If there was a negative to the book it would only be that the author is in Australia, so most of the appendix is directed toward Australian and New Zealand suppliers. Thanks to the internet I don't think that is such a big deal. If you haven't guessed it by now, I enjoyed this book.
Best on topic for beginner, excellent........1998-03-23
I have read the local library copy of an older copyright of this book. It is excellent and my current gardening for myself is being restructured to many of the ideas given in this book. My parents just moved into a mobile home and still wanted to garden. The ideas in this book will provide them with a wonderful hobby as well as a potentially higher productive, cost effective, long lasting garden area. Very usable for mom who is physically limited by age and bending over abilities. A 5 tier plastic pipe unit will be used for top crops, and a framework lined with agricultural plastic from a local dairy will be used for root crops in a "bin" about 30" high. I will use a combination of "soils" for this by combining several types of mediums. Sawdust, some potting soil, composted manure and then super charge this mix with nutrients and watering with a hydroponic solution. Wish us luck and a productive year! I am going to order this newer volume of the book for myself.

Book Description
This book explores the intersection of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology known as astroparticle physics. Extreme electromagnetic conditions present in puslars and other stars allow for investigations of the role of quantum processes in the dynamics of astrophysical objects and in the early Universe. Based in part on the authors' own work, this book systematically describes several methods of calculation of the effects of strong electromagnetic fields in quantum processes using analytical solutions of the Dirac equation and Feynmann diagrams at both the loop and tree levels. The consideration is emphasized at the two limiting cases: the case of a very strong magnetic field, and the case of a crossed field. The presentation will appeal to graduate students of theoretical physics with prior understanding of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) and the Standard Model of Electroweak Interactions, as well as specialists in QFT wishing to know more about the problems of quantum phenomena in external electomagnetic fields.

Book Description
I Am Third is the memoir of Gale Sayers, one of the best running backs in the history of the NCAA and pro football. It is also the story of his friendship with Brian Piccolo. Known also as a community leader and great friend to all, Sayers's credo is, "The Lord is first, my friends are second, and I am third."
Customer Reviews:
An Inspirational Tale.......2007-10-10
The title of the book, which became Mr. Sayers' credo throughout life, comes from a quote he saw on the desk of one of his coaches: "My God is first, my friends and family are second, I am third." Mr. Sayers tells the story of a man who lifted himself out of the ghetto with such a love for football, his friendship with Brian Piccolo (one of the very first pairings of a black player and a white player in the NFL) and his near-career ending injury. It is an inspirational story that does not get preachy. He tells of his friendship with Brian Piccolo without getting maudlin (Mr. Sayers and Mr. Piccolo were loyal friends and deeply respectful of each other.) He relates his triumphant return to the Chicago Bears after a knee injury that had almost everyone writing him off (except Mr. Piccolo, who urged him on during rehabilitation.) It almost seems as if Al Silverman turned on a tape recorder and let Mr. Sayers talk. Rather than being pretentious, the way a lot of sports biographies are one gets the feeling that Mr. Sayers is sitting down in an easy chair and is talking directly to each reader. The book, however, was written more than thirty-five years ago and ends before Mr. Sayers' final two (albeit disappointing) seasons. My hope is that Mr. Sayers will either update this book or write a sequel to tell us of his successes after football.
Okay.......2007-07-09
Bought this as gift for my husband. His reveiw: It was okay, interesting about Gayle Sayer's life but not extremely well written. It had little to say about his relationship with Brian Piccolo.
I Am Third.......2003-02-06
I am third
By Gale Sayers
Devon Hurley
My book is called I am third and itýs written by Gale Sayers. The price of the book is $...and u can find this book in any book store.
I am third is about the football player gale Sayers .He plays football with his friends every day. He grew up in a poor house with barely any food. That didnýt stop him from playing football though. He played no matter what. One time he tried to tackle some one and he got kicked in the mouth and he was spiting out blood his brother played football too. He was older then Gale. Gale was a starter on the high school football team with his brother he only got to play with his brother one season because he was a senior when Gale was a freshman. Gale was a good player. He was like1st or 2nd best in the country. He wanted to go to a four year college to play football. Mississippi State was in other sports besides football like track and basketball. He broke the long jump record for track. His mom and dad were always working on something. Galeýs dad was tall and had long legs. His dad worked hard every day and only got 40 dollars a day. His mom was at home watching all the kids. All the kids in the neighbor hood were on the football team. After gale went to college he was going to go to the pros either the chiefs or the bears. on draft day the Chicago bears picked Gale Sayers the first day of summer training he met Brian piccolo. Brian was a white person and Gale was a black person they didnýt really get along at first of race but after they started playing together. The coach put them in the same room partner. When gale was voted rookie of the year Brian starts to get sick and has to go to the hospital and he finds out he has cancer and has to stay in the hospital for the rest of the season. Later he goes home and is recovering but he gets cancer again a in his chest and dies from cancer. later gale plays the best game of his career he scores 6 touchdowns.
Awesome Book!!!.......2002-12-21
This review is on the book called "I Am Third". In this book it tells mostly about Gale Sayers' football career and some of Brian Piccolo's or Pic. The reason this book is called "I Am Third" is because he says that "God is 1st,my friends are 2nd,and I am 3rd". To understand this book you might have to know a little about football. If you like football stories I would reccomend you read "I Am Third".
Great Book and movie, very Moving.......2002-07-25
I really never liked sports, but this book really moved me because it was a story of two men very different yet very alike. They were both very talented, over the past few months i've been doing so much research and Gale and Brian. I also am planning to do a important report on them, the frienship that they had was great. BUY THIS BOOK!! and the movie Brians song!I loved both. I love Ya Gale and Brian GOD BLESS!

Great Travel Book.......2002-07-25
This travel book on Samoa is full of information to help one maximize a trip to Somoa. It has some great descriptions of Samoan history and places of interest. I am worried though. I am worried that if ever go to Samoa I will not know how to properly act. The author of this travelogue time and time again warns the reader about Samoan cultural mores which should be followed. But I am afraid I will forget some of them and be a shameful traveler.
The only book you'll need.......2001-01-24
This book has everything you need to know when travelling to Samoa. Nothing is missed and you should be able to plan a long or short stay in Samoa. Everything is as described in the book and nothing is really out of date. The only problem is that some of the maps lack detail to be useful, however quality maps are available in Apia.
Very thorough coverage.......2000-05-24
This book is PACKED with information! It is also a really great size (smallish) to tuck in my travel bag and take along to be sure not to miss anything on my first trip to Samoa. :o)

Book Description
In Thailand, a $4 billion per year tourist industry is the linchpin of the modernization process called the "Thai Economic Miracle". And what is Thailand's main attraction? Sex for hire. Year after year young women are lured to Bangkok to staff the teeming brothels, massage parlors, and sex bars that cater to male tourists from the United States, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, the Gulf States, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Developed from Lillian S. Robinson's article in The Nation,
Night Market traces the historical, cultural, material, and textual traditions that have combined in unique ways to establish sex tourism as an integral part of the developing Thai economy. It explores international sex tourism from the perspectives of economic-development planning, forced labor market choices, international sexual alienation, and textual traditions that have constructed sexual "Other" cultures in Western imagination.
Customer Reviews:
Five Things I Learned from Reading This Book.......2006-12-09
1. Travel is by nature exploitative of the environments and indigenous cultures of the places visited. Best just to stay home.
2. It's irresponsibly hedonistic to desire a good meal, a glass of fine wine or a swim on a tropical beach. Again, it's best to stay home. And at home you should stick to steamed vegetables from your garden, filtered tap water and cold showers.
3. It's possible to write and publish a book that is ostensibly about the anthropology and political economy of Thailand when you are unfamiliar with either discipline (both authors have doctorates in literature) and know little about the country or its language. All you need is a pile of travel guides, vacation brochures and the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature. If you can spout meaningless pap like "the bar-girl subjectivity" to uncomprehending interview subjects, so much the better. (A better title for this book would have been: "Sexy Thailand: The View from an MLA Convention." In fact how this book ever got published in the first place is beyond me; I guess someone at Routledge thought sex would sell, but that's a matter between the Routledge editors and their own personal deities.)
4. Both that the personal is political and the political is personal. (See work cited by authors: "Riflessioni liguistiche sul personale e sul politico," which, by the way, is one of several works in European languages listed in a bibliography that does not mention even one article in Thai or any other Asian language.)
5. Although western culture has irredeemably objectified, exoticized and fetishized Asian women, it's o.k. for a White American Male (WAM) to marry a "LBFM," but only if she's from a "good" (i.e., wealthy) family, as co-author Bishop says in the book that he has done. Bishop makes his reason for writing the book explicit on page 1, where he says that when he traveled around Thailand with his Thai wife everyone assumed she was a prostitute. At restaurants, Thai men at neighboring tables would make disparaging remarks, and "not even my rebukes in Thai could silence their tongues." He might have tried being diplomatic or even improving his Thai, which the rest of the book proves is a language that he knows barely at all. Instead he co-wrote this book, so much as to say, look, I wrote a book published by a fancy academic press that shows what idiots you all are, so shut up! (If you think this comment is too personal, see number 4, above. And also note that Bishop--who at the time the book was published was "Visiting Assistant Professor" at SMU--now works at a university in Singapore, a city whose expat residents enjoy a lifestyle that more closely approximates that of high colonialism than any other place on earth. At least we can be thankful that he's not writing articles about the "subjectivity" of his domestic help. Although "Night Market" is on his c.v., his list of current research interests does not mention anthropology, economics, sex, or even Thailand.)
Greatly informative.......2003-03-30
Lillian Robinson has explored the "economic miracle" of Thailand with great detail and care. That she is passionate about her subject and cares for the women and girls who are exploited in the Thai tourist sex market is at once refreshing and needed in our culture which increasingly accepts the commodification of women's bodies.
Pseudo-intellectual garbage.......2002-09-02
A lot of hype and nonsense showing how feminists extremists view the night life scene in Bangkok. From their fanatical point of view only. And of course when one of their own disagrees with them, such as, Cleo Oldzer, rather than question themselves, they dump on her. These people remind me of the academics in the play Equus, who had no hope of enjoying life. A very boring book in which they love to babble about "tropes." Well, sweetiepies, trope THIS.
An overblown effort.......1999-12-02
While the subject of this book is very interesting and deserves further study, the authors were very pretensious. The book did offer some new insights into Thai economics and how the tourism and prostituion industries interact, but one gets the feeling the authors wanted to rail against the "Farangs" that travel to the kingdom. Two items particularly irritated me. The first was how the authors referenced documents from a navigator on Christopher Columbus' first voyage to America to describe how foreigners feel about Thai prostitues. How a document written about a voyage before there was a Thailand (or U.S.A. for that matter) pertains to Bangkok massage parlors, I'll never know. The second "documentation" concerned a Thai Air advertisement. The ad featured a stewardess smiling at a white airline traveler. The authors try to convince the reader that this is proof that Thai industries are actively promoting the sex trade. If this is true, nearly every commercial on American television is an active promotion of prostitution in the U.S. There is a need for a serious study of the socio-economic impact of the sex trade in Thailand, but this is not it. This is nothing more than a tirade against prostitution and the foreign travelers who venture to Thailand. How prostitution destroys young Thais is truly a sad story, but the authors should devote a little more effort in researching their subject, rather than blindly grasping at obtuse concepts to prove a predjudicial viewpoint.
At least one 5-star review is an author.......1999-03-05
The turgid, confused prose is a dead give away. So is the overblown praise for this poorly written book. The 5 star review from "the United States of America" has to be one of the authors. If so, then the call for "objective" reviews from a postmodernist is ironic, as well as amusing. Also ironic is the book's theme of exploitation---by relying on a dated, superficial review of scholarly research, as well as sleazy pop culture, the book itself appears to be a work of Western exploitation. Except this time, it's the arrogant academics exploiting prostitutes, rather than their male customers. This harsh, intensely narcisistic diatribe may be good vita fodder, but it is not worthwhile reading.

Book Description
The end of the Cold War, which had significantly shaped international relations and global security structures for nearly half a century, imposed a practical burden of peace support upon the U.N. which it had always faced in theory but had never put into practice. The post-1991 debacles in the former Yugoslavia, Somalia, the African Great Lakes region and East Timor swiftly and painfully demonstrated that the U.N. organisation lacked the resources and infrastructure effectively to meet the enhanced demands being placed upon it. The idea that regional organisations and arrangements might fill the gap thus disclosed was prominent amongst the immediate responses to this problem. The role of the NATO-led forces, IFOR, SFOR and KFOR, in successive episodes of the former-Yugoslav crisis lent some support to this idea, but also illustrated some of its dangers. As the post-Cold War era has moved on, it has become manifest that whilst the regional options may have much to offer they can afford no simple solution to the post-Cold War peace support crisis. It is the purpose of this book to explore both the potential and the limitations of regional agencies as significant peace support actors at the dawn of a new century. This book has been written upon a trans-disciplinary basis, involving both international relations and international legal perceptions, proceeding from the presumption that these disciplines are not ultimately separable. The nature and the diversity of regional capacities are examined, as is the continuing importance of global control. The ultimate conclusion that the key issue for the twenty-first-century is one of appropriate selection amongst many options, within the meaning of article 53 of the U.N. Charter, need perhaps occasion little surprise. The nature of these options and the actual or potential processes of selection are, however, of vital importance in the initiation of a meaningful twenty-first-century defence and security debate.

From the author: "Globalism", "nationalism", and "regionalism" were important themes in the rationale of the pre-1996 Labor government in Australia for involvement in peacekeeping, but the latter two have become increasingly important. Since 1996, the conservative Coalition government has focused primarily on "nationalism" and "regionalism"; East Timor was the most significant peacekeeping operation ever undertaken by Australia. In normal circumstances, the major domestic influences on Australian approaches to peacekeeping emanate from the foreign policy and deference bureaucracies and from the foreign minister. At the international level, pressures relating to regional developments and the involvement of the United States and the United Nations are important.
