Incredible Reading .......2006-03-31

Not only will you pass page after page with ease, but you will learn a great many things!! Burroughs will become a close friend and teacher (of language, ecology, nature, people, and life in general) of the highest order. His work is phenomenal! I cant recommend it highly enough!!

Read everything you can from him, it should definitely be required! Also give it to your children. The preface of this book is by a teacher in Chicago that tells of the remarkable learning and enthusiasm she found in her pupils, upon reading Burroughs. I can't help but feel the same enthusiasm!!

A Burroughs anthology at last, and a superb one!.......2001-02-24

Charlotte Walker, a professor of English at the State University of New York at Oneonta, has assembled the first anthology of critical essays on the naturalist, literary critic, poet, and philosopher John Burroughs (1837-1921). This is an extraordinary collection. Walker includes a wide array of voices, many of them (including my own) from outside academia. All have important things to say about Burroughs, who once towered above the American literary landscape but whose reputation has been eroded by time. A renewal of interest in the work of the Catskill-born Burroughs is underway, and this book is both a product of that movement and a light to lead the way. As the author of a concise biography and appreciation of John Burroughs ("The World of John Burroughs," published by Sierra Club Books), I congratulate Walker on a job brilliantly done.

Outstanding book on Judo throws!.......2006-06-07

This is a treasure for anyone interested in throwing techniques, it covers all the formal Kodokan Judo throws with variations and Tsukuri's.
Photos are clear and foolowed sometimes by drawings from old Jujutsu books, plus historical facts on some of the techniques.
I just started reading and allreay learned so much, this will greatly help with my Judo practice!

Buy it, it's just a must have.

Authoritative Reference.......2005-11-26

This manual is an authoritative reference which gives clear explanations of the basic throws of Judo. It is not a book for beginners because it has so much detail that it could be confusing. For example, there are multiple versions of each throw shown, some of which are quite different from the basic technique. It helps the reader distinguish between throws that are similar, and distinct variations of each throw.

It is best used as a reference for further study of techniques learned in class. It is not really competition oriented, and is more geared to technicians and those interested in understanding the official position of the Kodokan regarding each technique. Only approved Kodokan techniques are shown, and of course no matwork is included.

Two words: Buy it!.......2005-10-25

Reading the other reviews here of Daigo Kudan's work, now released in English by Kodansha, it is very difficult to add to the words of praise for this monumental collection of Kodokan Judo nagewaza. Originally this material was published in a series of Kodokan magazine articles. In fact, the two models for principal photography worked with the author and publisher for eight years.

Kodansha Int'l deserves praise for its commitment to bringing judo books like "Kodokan Throwing Techniques" to students outside of Japan. Most recently, a reprint and updated translation of the coveted Mifune Judan's "The Canon of Judo" was also released, and it is hard to say which book I like best. Both will raise the level of the reader's understanding of the technical and philosophical foundations of Kodokan Judo.

I also recommend this book to those who are involved with other martial arts/sports, including "Brazilian Jujitsu" and "Mixed Martials Arts." A thorough study can only increase their expertise, and they may be surprised to discover that there are few things that are really "new" under the sun.

Thought it was amazing. Every politician today should read this book and try to do something about Canada's sinking. READ THIS! It'll open your eyes. Cohen provides some great background info for those not old enough to remember the triumvirate of men he's so fondly dubbed "The Renaissance Men".

I wish every Canadian politician would read this book. I was afraid at first that Cohen would be a bit too partisan - he has presented before House of Commons Special Comittee's - but it is not. It is firstly a guideline to how Canada can attempt to pull itself out of it's (our!) apathetic slump. Secondly it is a fascinating, all be it partial, history of Canada's famed Diplomatic and International dealings.
Please buy a copy and send it to your MP.
Oh, and I don't know what that other reviewer was talking about - a good section of the book deals with the world changing and thereby Canada's role changing.

A thoughtful read for any Canadian.......2004-04-04

I would recommend this book to any Canadian interested in our nation's place in the world. This book examines the foundation behind many of our national myths and demonstrates the decline in our stature and influence. The book isn't simply a litany of problems, it also suggests what could be done to improve the situation. At the very least, these issues deserve a national debate, not the gradual decline through neglect that is currently happening.

Cohen demonstrates that Canada's military is in Crisis.......2003-12-29

This critique of Canadian foreign policy will humble readers who are under the impression that Canada has a notable place in the world comparable to its illustrious past. Andrew Cohen gives us a brief overview of the history of Canadian foreign policy, dispeling several myths including our supposed past of being primarily neutral peacekeepers. At the end of ww2 Canada's military was the 4th largest in the world with the capacity to develop nuclear weapons if necessary. More importantly, Cohen reveals information about the state of the current military detachment in Afghanistan which makes one wonder whether our presence there is more of a liability than an asset to coalition forces.

Whine for a Nation.......2003-12-25

Cohen does a reasonably good job of recapping the facts of Canada's decline as a middle power since the end of the Second World War. Probably a third to a half of the book is simply a jog through 50 years of Canadian history, emphasising the 40s, 50s and 60s as the decades when Canada was a country of some influence. He pays the usual homage to senior civil servants Lester Pearson (before he became PM Pearson), Norman Robertson et al, seeing them as the key to Canada's ability to punch above its weight on the world stage.

Where Cohen goes astray is in failing to treat Canada's foreign, defence, trade and aid policies in the broader context of world affairs. His book does not really acknowledge that the world has changed, and indeed that Canada's post-Second World War moment of influence was very much a function of Europe's collapse. And apart from vague appeals to do more and spend more, Cohen doesn't seem to have much of a vision of what he would have Canada do with any new-found/restored influence.

All that said, it's still a worthwhile read, if only to get your own thought processes going.
