Book Description
More then just a textbook, A Theory of Incentives in Procurement and Regulation will guide economists' research on regulation for years to come. It makes a difficult and large literature of the new regulatory economics accessible to the average graduate student, while offering insights into the theoretical ideas and stratagems not available elsewhere. Based on their pathbreaking work in the application of principal-agent theory to questions of regulation, Laffont and Tirole develop a synthetic approach, with a particular, though not exclusive, focus on the regulation of natural monopolies such as military contractors, utility companies, and transportation authorities.
The book's clear and logical organization begins with an introduction that summarizes regulatory practices, recounts the history of thought that led to the emergence of the new regulatory economics, sets up the basic structure of the model, and previews the economic questions tackled in the next seventeen chapters. The structure of the model developed in the introductory chapter remains the same throughout subsequent chapters, ensuring both stability and consistency. The concluding chapter discusses important areas for future work in regulatory economics.
Each chapter opens with a discussion of the economic issues, an informal description of the applicable model, and an overview of the results and intuition. It then develops the formal analysis, including sufficient explanations for those with little training in information economics or game theory. Bibliographic notes provide a historical perspective of developments in the area and a description of complementary research. Detailed proofs are given of all major conclusions, making the book valuable as a source of modern research techniques. There is a large set of review problems at the end of the book.
Jean-Jacques Laffont is Professor of Economics at Université des Sciences Sociales in Toulouse where Jean Tirole is Scientific Director at the Institut d'Economié Industrielle.
Customer Reviews:
A book good for economic researcher's computer simulation.......2001-09-07
I bought this book for the grand name of "Jean Tirole" and the title. Pretty disappointed. This book only focus on modeling factors, nonetheless, quite through compiled.
If you're interesting about this field, might want to refer to;
1. Willison, the institution of capitalism ( also hierarchy )
2. Olsen, the collective action ( and other books from Olsen )
3. Tirole, the theory of industrial organization
Some books regarding "principle and agent" (no recommendation here )
NON PLUS ULTRA.......2000-05-25
This is a MUST own for scholars teaching advanced microeconomic theory, in particular for courses that emphasize in labor contracts under asymmetric information. It is written in a crisp, approachable style (for advanced undergraduate and graduate level) relying wherever possible with rigorous proofs. This book provides not only an "action packed" and up to date guide to economic theory, it takes you to the knowledge frontier in this field. I recommend it to all serious scholars and economic practitioners.

Book Description
With an elegant blend of political, social, and economic history, Thomas Summerhill's _Harvest of Dissent_ investigates the character of agrarian movements in nineteenth-century New York to reexamine the nature of Northern farmers' embrace of or resistance to the emergence of capitalist market agriculture. Taking the long view, _Harvest of Dissent_ brings together the events of nearly a century of agrarian radicalism in central New York, from the Anti-Rent movement to the Grange, as part of a whole.
Based on an unprecedented amount of primary material research, _Harvest of Dissent_ presents a richly detailed picture of the farmers' lives and what the new market meant for their families, communities, and labor. Summerhill convincingly demonstrates how protracted and contingent the process of drawing farmers into capitalist markets actually was, and how the farmers selectively and creatively resisted it. Finally, Summerhill's careful analysis of political economy also overturns several cornerstones of previous thinking about nineteenth-century farmer movements, linking the rural household economy to politics and demonstrating a consistency between farmers' personal economic decisions and their political activities.
Customer Reviews:
History at its best.......2006-05-27
This is a wonderful book! Summerhill's writing is clear as polished glass and his powerful narrative ability invites the reader into a nineteenth-century world rich in detail and, like the dark earth tilled by the farmers who are his subject, fertile with a harvest that in this case has grown out of research and analysis that have taken the author into sources and archival materials that have rarely if ever been looked at with such thoughtful sensitivity. It is a world full of the tensions and turbulence of social, economic and political transformation. Summerhill narrows his focus to three counties in central New York to give us an intimate view of how real people and real families coped with, made sense of, and often resisted these changes.
The book begins in the days when the ink that penned the Constitution was barely dry and some people in Delaware, Ostego and Schharie counties still told first hand stories about the War for Independence and felled trees that just a generation or two before had shaded Iroquois men and women who had recently been shoved out. It is a world, and a generation, innervated by ideals of independence, industry, liberty and the redemptive possibilities of being a stalwart member of a new and virtuous republic. Summerhill shows us that they took these ideals and responsibilities seriously, and consciously transmitted them to their children. But as the momentum of the early republic period quickens, bringing roads, canals and railroads, binding these farming families into larger commercial markets, making them increasingly dependent on capital and strengthening the relatively recent ideology of capitalism and its functionaries (large absentee land owners, banks, merchantile corporations, politicians, etc) these republican ideals often clash with the world around them.
How do these people make sense of and respond to such tensions? How do they reconcile them? When and how do they resist and rebel? How do they preserve their families and communities? How can they take advantage of change and use it to their advantage? And perhaps more fundamentally, how do they survive, feed their children and preserve their integrity as their lives are churned in the mixer of increasing industrialism and an increasingly specialized market and political economy. Summerhill's analysis of these and many others questions is as illuminating as it is entertaining. He refuses to reduce the people living in central New York to pawns or treat them as a mass. Nor does he romanticize them. Instead, he draws out the humanity of various idividuals and families to illustrate the complexity, flexibility and range of responses to show the larger journey over the course of several generations as a new kind of rural America emerges. In doing so, he ties these lives and themes into the even larger story of nineteenth-century America itself.
Summerhill offers some novel conclusions about all this, but he is not dogmatic or heavy-handed. There is enough ambiguity and he has let the men and women speak for themselves enough that the reader is left to decide for him or herself. As such, the book is not only history at its finest, it is an invitation to meditate more reflectively on how we ourselves are living our lives, and what it means to be alive, to be human, in times of change and turmoil.

Customer Reviews:
I wish I hadn't bought this..........2007-01-18
This book is a big disappointment. I don't know very much about astronomy, but I have done a lot of experiments with my kids. The better experiments in this collection are basic scientific experiments we have done before with a page of explanation on how it relates to astronomy...or how it is a simulation of something in astronomy, which I feel is misleading to the kids.
Other experiments are not even experiments, but demonstrations of things so obvious that most kids can visualize them without a demonstration. For example, stirring tea leaves in a jar with a pencil to simulate a hurricane on Jupiter.
Only one experiment sounded interesting--a sun dial that can act as a compass. But wait! The compass is only accurate two days out of the year, and there is no explanation of the science behind the experiment.
I want my money back!!!!
Absolutely Wonderful!.......2002-09-19
As a mom who home-schools her kids, this book has been invaluable for keeping the fun and interest in teaching Astronomy. Janice VanCleave's book have been a great assest to our library.
Packed with errors........2002-06-02
This book looks like it tried too hard to be about astronomy. It takes reasonable experiments about basic scientific principles and tacks on explanations related to astronomy that ignore other factors (i.e. both reflectivity and distance from the sun are seperately listed as the reason a planet is hotter when Venus is neither the darkest nor the closest), are overly obscure, or just plain wrong (appearance of 'the man in the moon' caused by shadows).
I have worked in an astronomy museum for six years, and this book has me pausing to try and comprehend what the book is trying to do. I am not familiar with the other Janice VanCleave books, but I specifically recommend AGAINST this one.

details, details, details.......2005-02-20
I received this book as a Christmas present from my mother last year. It was so fascinating that I ended up reading it cover-to-cover on Christmas day. My mother has been sewing for almost 40 years, and Weil included many details that even my mother didn't know. I really liked how Weil included a section on fibers and their origins (including synthetics). I'm not much of a consignment shopper, but the information on construction and spotting quality have been more helpful than I could ever imagine. Not only did it help me go through my closet and spot things to dontate to Goodwill, but it also helped me spot a beautiful vintage raincoat at Goodwill today for $5.
What a Fun Book!.......2004-11-17
This book is a great resource for anyone who wants to find unique fashion in unusual places. Christa Weil not only provides good advice on how to spot fabulous finds but she provides terrific tips on taking care of quality clothes. Everyone who loves clothes will love this book. But the best result of getting this book is the reaction of my 12-year old daughter. After reading the book she has been motivated to take better care of her clothes and has turned her room into a clothes boutique...dress forms and all!
the best single source ever on secondhand shopping!.......2004-03-27
Christa? You really did it well! This is a comprehensive, funny, well-researched resource book on the fabrics, markers of quality clothing, labels, and flaws in secondhand finds. It is the best single source of information for secondhand shoppers that I have ever come across! Cheers!
Excellent and useful book.......2004-02-28
This is oneof the best books to read if you're interested in, or if you collect and wear, vintage clothing. From how to read the quality of materials and workmanship in a garments, to how to take care of cleaning them, the information is presented in a witty, informative, useful way. Weil has not only great information, but a way with words and the turn of a phrase, which made the book that much more enjoyable to read. While I personally would love to have seen more illustrations than the many that are already in the book (e.g. of the different button holes styles, zippers, etc.) and pictures of some outfits having the design elements discussed, as I'm greedy for more vintage info all the time, not having these included doesn't detract from this book in the least. One can only hope that Weil continues to write about this subject, as she's thorough, knowledgeable, and writes well. Her book is a pleasure for the senses in all ways. If you buy one book about vintage clothing, buy this one. You won't be disappointed.
I absolutely adore this book!.......2003-06-11
Everytime I pick up this book, I get a serious urge to shop! It is an absolutely superb resource! I love it, I love it, I love it! My coffee table book!

If you only buy one parenting book, make it this one.......2004-12-07
If you have teenagers in your house, or will someday, buy this book for them and youself. Somehow Mimi Doe has managed to combine practical advice on how to cope with the challenges of raising adolescents with this amazing understanding about how to connect with them on another level. I have three teenagers, two boys and a girl, and lots of typical ups and downs raising them. This book will help. Already has. Buy it!
Relief........Finally...........Real Tips for Real Teens..........2004-11-08
Just got this book the other day and already I feel more relaxed and hopeful about raising up these teenagers of mine (I have 2). The writing isn't judgemental or preachy and seems to be without religious overtones. I will go back and use it again I'm sure because I'm reading it with my highlight pen. The best part, so far, for me are the author's real stories and the Parents Check in Questions. The stories show me there are other parents like me...with teens who make mistakes. The questions really get me thinking about what I can do to make things better.
It saved me!!.......2004-11-05
AS the mother of twin teen boys, I struggle just to keep up with them let alone think about what's going on inside their hearts, minds. I have long been an admirer of Mimi Doe as an author and this book is going to be the book that will carry my boys through their teenage years...There is a warm, compassionate feel here that reassures me...with all the insanity going on during these years this book gives me ways to keep connected...
