Book Description
Basic Marketing is the market leading principles text domestically. Basic Marketing offers a very thorough integration of the latest marketing themes, topics, and examples woven throughout the body of the text. This integration of themes, topics, and examples is carefully blended with the text’s traditional strengths of clear, accessible communication, a focus on management decision-making in marketing, and completely integrated coverage of special topics such as technology, ethics, international perspectives, relationship marketing, and services. This is the first book to develop and present the 4 P’s framework when describing the components of the marketing mix (Product, Price, Place, Promotion). Where most principles of marketing texts have separate supplement authors, Bill Perreault is the creator of every item in the package. This unique involvement ensures quality, accuracy, and reliability.ity.

BE CAREFUL WHEN ORDERING THIS BOOK.......2004-08-26
There are various editions of this book being listed under the same ISBN. Make sure to contact the seller of the book if you buy it used to make sure the ISBN of their copy is the same as the one you are looking for! I had to order this book 2 times to get the right book! Sellers should list the ISBN of the BOOK (not the CD or whatever is included) so that buyers of this text know which one they are getting!
Good marketing book.......2003-09-29
This book was very easy to follow.
Horrible to read.......2003-01-24
This book is horrid to read, the chapters drag on and there simply too much information crammed into one chapter. Its hard to differentiate the points in the chapters, and many of the important points are not emphasized.
well duh.......2002-04-20
You know this book could have been nothing more than a glossary of definitions, a few summarys and outlines of the 4 this or 8 thats and it would have been much more interesting. The material in here is so basic and simple that I do the reading and don't feel that I have actually learned anything that wasn't fairly obvious to begin with. The examples are relevent if you happen to be a really slow learner and need 3 page explainations of 2 sentence definitions.
Comprehensive Book for Principles of Marketing Course.......1999-09-08
This is a fairly comprehensive fundamentals of marketing book. It is laid out well. It begins with an elementary explanation of the marketing discipline and its relationship to society. This is followed by an explanation of the ingredients in marketing strategy planning. Following this section, the author addresses the external factors that affect marketing decisions. This is followed by a discussion of demographic and behavioral deminisons of the customer. Then, the author catergories different type of customers. The next chapter presents an elementary review of marketing research. The most of the remainder of the text focuses on the 4 Ps--Product, Place, Promotion, and Price. This is probably the strongest part of the text. Throughout the text the author incorporates global and ethical issues that relate to the subject matter of each chapter. This is an excellent text for a principles or fundamentals of marketing course.

Book Description
Reading Work: Literacies in the New Workplace explores changing understandings of literacy and its place in contemporary workplace settings. It points to new questions and dilemmas to consider in planning and teaching workplace education. By taking a social perspective on literacies in the workplace, this book challenges traditional thinking about workplace literacy as functional skills, and enables readers to see the complexity of literacy practices and their embeddedness in culture, knowledge, and action. A mixture of ethnographic studies, analysis, and personal reflections makes these ideas accessible and relevant to a wide range of readers in the fields of adult literacy and language education and helps to bridge the divide between theory and practice in the field of workplace education.
Reading Work: Literacies in the New Workplace features:
*four distinct but related ethnographies of literacy use in contemporary workplaces;
*a social practice view of literacy brought to the workplace;
*collaborative research undertaken by experienced workplace educators and academics working in the areas of adult literacy and second language learning;
*implications chapters for both practice and theory--presented not as a series of steps but rather as reflections by seasoned educators on shared dilemmas; and
*engaging, accessible writing that encourages workplace practitioners to read, learn from, and do their own research.
This book is an important resource for practicing workplace educators, trainers, and instructors; academics who teach workplace educators; unionists, policymakers, human resource managers, supervisors, or quality coordinators who believe education can make a difference and are interested in seeing maximum results from workplace learning. Keith strikes again.......2007-09-01
This book is desirable, as is anything written by Keith Code on the art of motorcycling. However, get twist... 1 and 2 first. This book tackles those trying to race. I'm not a racer and this book was still useful, but I could not take full advantage of this book unless I start racing :-)
A very good book.......2006-11-05
I think Twist of the Wrist 2 is a superior book, but the Soft Science is also a decent read. The concepts are fairly intuitive, but there are many good artifacts of infomation. I recommend only purchasing this book AFTER Twist of the Wrist 2. The concepts aren't cummulative, but Twist of the Wrist 2 is simply a better textbook - in my opinion.
It helped me a lot.......2006-10-12
Read the book, watched the movie then even took a school. I was a club racer and I rode track very often, after reading the book, I cut over 16 second off of my lap times and the best part is, I did it without crashing. I never had to close my eyes before entering a turn because I was in over my head. The best way I can put it is this, before I read Keith's book, everything or all the thoughts about riding and what to do or how to get faster or what I was doing, was wible wable in my head, I heard somethings here others there, contradicting thing in other places......Keith organized every bit of my thought and built up from the ground up, now i'm running ahead of the pack and I'm not sweating it because usually it would feel like i'm going to crash. Now every corner I take I feel confident that I will make it out alright and will even know exactly what I did to be so.
Common Sense over analyzed.......2006-01-30
This book might be good for you if you are new to the sport of riding/racing sport bikes. And when I say new, I mean you really don't have a clue as to what you are doing on a sportbike.
The dribble that went on and on in this book can be summed up by saying "think about what you are doing".
The big text and "kid" like drawings don't lend much credibility to this book either. I feel like Keith Code struggled to get enough information together to call this a book.
Soft Science--even Rossi says it is!.......2005-12-23
I just read an interview with 7 time world champ Valentino Rossi, and he talked about riding as a mental sport. Obviously Code had some things to say about that, and a long time ago. 20 years ago when I was endurance racing on a team of 3, my other teammates were both faster than I was. I didn't race as much as they did, so I had to figure out antoher way to pick up the skills. The short story is this book took me from slowest to fastest of our little team, and I raced the least. Just a little reading, then put it to use. I've heard that some really top racers did this too, so I guess I'm not the only one!

"Telling me to 'Be clear,' " writes Joseph M. Williams in Style: Toward Clarity and Grace, "is like telling me to 'Hit the ball squarely.' I know that. What I don't know is how to do it." If you are ever going to know how to write clearly, it will be after reading Williams' book, which is a rigorous examination of--and lesson in--the elements of fine writing. With any luck, your clear writing will turn graceful, as well. Though most of us, says Williams, would be happy just to write "clear, coherent, and appropriately emphatic prose," he is not content to teach us just that. He also attempts, by way of example, to determine what constitutes elegant writing.
Despite the proliferation of books in this genre, rarely does one feel so confident in one's instructor. Williams is meticulous and exacting, yet never pedantic. Though he agrees with most of his grammarian colleagues that, generally speaking, the active voice is better than the passive or that the ordinary word is preferable to the fancy, Williams is also quick to assert that there's no sense learning a rule "if all we can do is obey it." And he is most emphatic about the absurdity of prescriptions concerning usage (such as, "Never begin a sentence with a coordinating conjunction"). Such rules, he says, "are 'violated' so consistently that, unless we are ready to indict for bad grammar just about every serious writer of modern English, we have to reject as misinformed anyone who would attempt to enforce them." --Jane Steinberg
Book Description
This acclaimed book is a master teacher's tested program for turning clumsy prose into clear, powerful, and effective writing. A logical, expert, easy-to-use plan for achieving excellence in expression, Style offers neither simplistic rules nor endless lists of dos and don'ts. Rather, Joseph Williams explains how to be concise, how to be focused, how to be organized. Filled with realistic examples of good, bad, and better writing, and step-by-step strategies for crafting a sentence or organizing a paragraph, Style does much more than teach mechanics: it helps anyone who must write clearly and persuasively transform even the roughest of drafts into a polished work of clarity, coherence, impact, and personality.
"Buy Williams's book. And dig out from storage your dog-eared old copy of The Elements of Style. Set them side by side on your reference shelf."—Barbara Walraff, Atlantic
"Let newcoming writers discover this, and let their teachers and readers rejoice. It is a practical, disciplined text that is also a pleasure to read."—Christian Century
"An excellent book....It provides a sensible, well-balanced approach, featuring prescriptions that work."—Donald Karzenski, Journal of Business Communication
"Intensive fitness training for the expressive mind."—Booklist
A textbook edition with exercises, Style is available from Longman.
Customer Reviews:
An important book for professional writers and academia.......2007-09-04
This book covers not the basic grammar issue, but how to make your passage / paragraph / and in general writing flow.
Undergraduate may find it helpful when they are taking a writing class, while graduate students should seriously read this book as manuscript writing is paramount.
This book taught me how to write.......2007-08-02
Most of my colleagues think I am a good writer. Most of what I know about writing well I learned from this book. It is a fascinating treatise on communication as much as a guide to writing well. It is a must for any professional writer.
Why is this concept not taught in schools?.......2006-09-12
I know I'm a bad writer and have been for some time. I always prefered math and science in school to arts and language. Had my middle school teachers at least implied the goal of this book, and my high school teachers actually used it in the classroom, I think I'd be a much more coherent writer. Maybe even thinker.
Book lacks style, clarity and grace.......2006-02-19
This is a book about clear writing. Unfortunately, the significant thing that is missing in the book is the very clarity it seeks to promote. The authors seems to have invented an array of terms that are used not only inconsistently, but also interchangbly throughout the book. The authors warn the readers not to use too many terms to refer to the same concept, only to violate it summarily in this book. Also, the book has several complex passages -on subjects that are equally complex- that have been added to illustrate, according to the authors, key principles in omission. The authors then go on to revise the passages using their principles. This approach requires a mental feat that only a few determined readers will have the time to perform. First, a determined reader, if at all he is interested in knowing what's going on in a complex passage, must come to grips with the ideas expressed in the passage. Then he must remember the principles the authors are trying to illustrate and see how they have been mis-applied or omitted from the passage. If the determined reader has not dropped out of it altogether at this point, then he must now go on to the authors' revised passage and see how they have applied the principles to express the same idea clearly. At the end of all this, the poor but determined reader is left not with a clear illustration of a principle, but with a headache that will take a stiff dose of aspirin. Perhaps the authors should read their book and apply the principles to revise the book, and maybe it will result in a more readable book.
Scientific Approach.......2005-10-09
Of the many books on style that I have read, this is the first that draws on research in cognitive psychology to buttress its recommendations. Perhaps it should have been called: "A Scientific Approach Toward Clarity and Grace." For that is what it is. And for that reason, it is one of the most valuable books of its genre.

Book Description
What Do Citicorp, UPS and Marriott have in common? They are "breakthrough" service providers, firms that changed the rules of the game in their respective industries by consistently meeting or exceeding customer needs and expectations. To find out how these companies do it, service management experts James Heskett, Earl Sasser, and Christopher Hart put the question to the chief executive officers of fifteen of America's leading service firms attending a workshop at the Harvard Business School. Breakthrough leaders, they discovered, think very differently about their businesses than do their competitors, in distinct and well-defined ways. Now, in Service Breakthroughs, based upon five years of exhaustive research in fourteen service industries, Heskett, Sasser, and Hart show exactly what enables one or two companies in each industry to constantly set new standards for quality and value that force competitors to adapt or fail.
At the heart of breakthrough performance, the authors contend, is a sometimes intuitive but thorough understanding of the "self-reinforcing service cycle" that replaces traditional management of "trade-offs." The "cycle" is a paradigm derived from the research results suggesting direct links between heightened customer satisfaction, increased customer retention, augmented sales and profit, improved quality and productivity, greater service value per unit of cost, improved satisfaction of service providers, increased employee retention, and further heightened customer satisfaction. With detailed examples and dramatic case studies of Mark Twain Bancshares, American Airlines, Florida Power & Light, Federal Express, McDonald's and many other companies, Heskett, Sasser, and Hart show how this self-reinforcing cycle of behavior differentiates breakthrough leaders from their "merely good" competitors.
The authors describe how breakthrough managers develop counterintuitive, even contrarian, strategic service visions. These companies define their "service concept" in terms of results achieved for customers rather than services performed. They target market segments by focusing on psychographics -- how customers think and behave -- instead of demographics. And instead of viewing a service delivery system as a facility where the service is producted and sold, breakthrough firms see it as an opportunity to enhance the quality of the service.
These profound differences in thought and action have brought spectacular results. For managers who wish to set the pace in their service industries, Service Breakthroughs will be essential reading.
Customer Reviews:
Great, hands-on book.......2005-08-19
I bought this book from a second-hand japanese bookstore, I took it because it was about the only thing in English, and I'm happy I did. What I consider most interesting and more useful of this book is that it is a big "how-to". It'll tell you what outstanding companies have done, how it have worked, and why. It's just amazing to see the huge pile of ideas you can get from this book; it showed me that there are a lot of opportunities out there for the entrepreneur with the right ideas in mind.
The only thing I didn't like much about this book is that I've already used FIVE highlighters on it ;) (I told you, it's really good!)
A very thorough view on sevice excellency.......2000-04-04
This is one of the first books that discuss the client-side of businesses. When this book was published, very few authors had thought of addressing this topic, and Heskett, Sasser and Hart did an excellent job in their analysis of the service industries. The market for banks, hotels, airlines and other service providers has changed dramatically in the last ten years, and the authors show what the leaders in each of these markets did to keep their customers coming back. They show that the main goal of the corporation is to 'achieve goals for the customers', not only perform services day in and day out. I have read many other books on this same subject after this one, but none with such wit and brilliance.
