Book Description
Since its first edition in 1990, The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook has sold more than 600,000 copies. Its engaging exercises and worksheets have helped millions of readers make real progress in overcoming problems with anxiety and phobic disorders. The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Resources in Mental Health (Norcross, et al., 2003) gave the book its highest rating and praised it as "a highly regarded and widely known resource." Thousands of mental health and medical professionals recommend this book to their clients and patients every year. Simply put, it is the single finest source of self-help information on its topic available anywhere.
The text of this fourth edition has been fully revised and expanded and includes two new chapters: a discussion of physical conditions that can aggravate anxiety and an overview of the use of mindfulness practice in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and some forms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. As in previous editions, the book offers the most up-to-date information on medications, natural supplements, and complementary strategies that can alleviate anxiety symptoms. The sections on relaxation, nutrition, and exercise have all been updated and broadened.

Good Overview for someone suffering from phobia or anxiety.......2007-08-13
The only thing it lacked is specific examples. And some easy remedies. Other than that it is a great book to read!
Excellent WorkBook!.......2007-08-11
We use this workbook in our psychiatry clinic. Patients like it and it's easy to use. Just make sure you're willing to do the work, otherwise you're wasting your money.
Help for Anxiety.......2007-07-30
A VERY helpful resource for people with anxiety. Lots of insight, suggestions, and extremely user friendly to the lay person.
Must Read for Anyone With Anxiety.......2007-05-21
This workbook is full of insight into what makes you feel anxiety and great ways to take steps to overcoming the fears associated with anxiety. The first book (or workbook) that didn't make me feel like I was crazy and that there are really easy ways to deal with daily anxiety! Your family members will find this enlightening as well, since they generally mis-understand what you are going through.
The Anxiety&Phobia Workbook.......2007-05-14

Useful resource.......2006-08-15
Socail anxiety effects the quality of life of many human beings. Ive worked with a number of individuals with this difficulty and was able to aid in their recovery through the use of exercise in this workbook as well as other modalities of treatment. If you are affected by social anxiety or other fears this is a helful resource combined with the help of a trusting therapist or counselor. Remember you dont have to livce thsi way and if you have a sincere desire to improve you certainly will. Believe in yourself and and you can conquer any challenge in life. Recommended as a resource.
Cognitive thinking.......2006-07-12
This is the first Cognitive thinking book I've read I found it very helpful and it really works. You have to do your part. You can't JUST read it. Its very interesting book too. If you'd like to just become more self-aware. There are other reasons why people seem rude or what not.
Somewhat helpful.......2006-04-04
This book can be used toghether with therapy (I recommend Dr Richards selp help series that you can buy on line). The book does not teach you how to change your negative thinking, it only teaches you how to create a hierachy for social situations to work with. It is only helpful if combined with other books/therapies.
this book is so self explanatory.......2005-06-27
This book was really a waste of time. When I was done reading, I was no better off than when I started. The beginning is really interesting in that it describes what kind of feelings go on inside the mind of a shy person. I thought I was the only one in the world who felt these things, and it was interesting to see them expressed by someone else in a book. So I continued to read on to the parts where they tell you how to get better. It said to try stuff like writing in a journal every day and to "think positive", "be assertive", and "practice making small talk". Like I didn't consider that on my own! This book really did not need to be written. What they could have done was just take the beginning of the book and sell it on its own as a short story or something, since it is the only useful or interesting part. After the first part of the book, it's basically telling you to go see a psychiatrist or get medication or both. It starts to get repetitive and is basically filled with the same useless suggestions that any person could have thought of, but they keep re-wording them throughout the book. So save yourself some money and don't buy this book. If you're interested in reading the opening part of the book, see if you can find it in a library.
I had social anxiety, now completely cured with these books.......2003-02-14
I was trying to think of a way to help everyone out there who has been dealing with the same feelings that I have been. I have tried everything that people recommend for social anxiety, many exposures, going to programs, numerous therapists. If I had known even two months ago that today I would feel at ease in many situations I never would have believed it. The two books that will change you noticably and permanently are both "Feeling Good", and "Psycho-cybernetics". I had tried everything out there I could get my hands on, and then these two books were a godsend. After a week into "Feeling Good" you will actually start feeling like the person you want to be, and a month into it you will feel SO much better. I recommend that after that go directly into "Psycho-Cybernetics". The introduction says that he thought his book would never sell because nobody would believe his claims that he can give you the personality you want through visualization, and I thought it was hype. Then after doing it for a few days I was amazed. I have only used this book a week, and am already very much better. You dont need the therapists, drugs, alcohol or the bible to feel better, just get these two books, be committed to them. Give them a month, and if you change half as much as I have you will be very glad you did. You dont need to sit inside worried, these books will make you the person you want to be.

A very good introduction to basic and advanced techniques by an author with tremendous seas kayaking experience. Lots of good diagrams, clear discriptions, nice layout.

A Confused Laundry List.......2000-08-24
Derek Hutchinson has led kayaking expeditions around the world and teaches highly regarded seminars on the sport. However, he seems unable to clearly translate this teaching ability to print. This book reads like a laundry list of things to do in a kayak: equipment choices, paddle strokes, rescue techniques, rolling, surfing maneuvers, etc.; without rhyme or reason as to their purpose or when they should be executed. The book does cover a complete range of topics relevant to the sea kayaker: all topics just mentioned plus weather, tides, navigation, wind, etc. Unfortunately, many sections are out-of-date, such as the equipment section; a lot of information, such as that on nautical charts and on weather, is specific to kayaking in Britain; and some information, such as that on tidal currents, is just plain wrong. I did learn quite a lot from the sections on turning strokes and eskimo rolling, but not as much as I feel I should have and not enough to know where or when to use a particular technique. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality of instruction presented in this book.
Learned everything I needed to know about sea kayaking........1999-07-20
Derek Hutchinson really went to the extent in this book. It was really helpful. Definateley gave history, tips, and techniques. It was a very effective book for beginers like myself. Well drawn diagrams of techniques made learning easy and fun. Hutchinson really gave it all to you. It was exently written.

It's difficult to give much credibility to a book that late-night talk-show hosts read from in order to titillate their audiences, an indignity that has been endured by The Romance Writers' Phrasebook. But this slim volume, which lists more than 3,000 descriptive phrases, is actually a useful resource, and not only to romance writers. Any writer looking for a picturesque way of describing a character, demonstrating action, or revealing emotion will benefit from the advice of authors Jean Kent and Candace Shelton.
Well-organized and arranged for quick reference, The Romance Writers' Phrasebook is divided into easy to search categories such as "Physical Description," "Body Movements," "Facial Expressions," "Emotion," and "Colors." Because it was originally published in 1984, many of the descriptive phrases have long since become cliché and exact usage should be avoided. The phrasebook is most useful as a source of inspiration and ideas for helping writers develop their own descriptive style.
Customer Reviews:
Great to get the creative juices flowing!.......2007-10-09
Anyone who takes this book and writes these phrases verbatim did not read the book. The author clearly states in the beginning that it's meant to get your creative juices flowing. And that's what it did for me. While there are corny, cliche phrases in it, there is also a lot of good stuff that got me thinking of how to enrich my own writing.
If you are an aspiring romance writer, as I am, I believe you will find some useful stuff in there to expand your writing skills. It's easy to read, and categorized very well. I'll keep this book handy as I write.
Extremely Helpful Jump Starter.......2007-09-14
The writers of this book state it, this is a source for getting you -started- about thinking what phrases you may wish to use with writing a romantic scene. Not the book, not the chapter, but a scene. Its by far the best book out there for helping someone writing a sex scene. Any erotic romance writer's book only deals with one's attitude, to free oneself from guilt and just write it. Then they typically (4 out of 4 books so far) just say 'research it'. Here is one source you can use to help with the actual scene instead of a book that says just research it. It's approach to description of a character is good for simple minimizing lines. Good to sprinkle in what you write, but again, as the authors write, it is something to get you started. Give a hint, and then you will develope your own way to present your scene in a book.
Get it........2007-01-11
Every would-be romance writer should have this book, even as just fuel for their romantic imagination so they can insert more tags in their own writing.
A great book if not taken seriously.......2007-01-11
This is a very funny book. If you want a bit of a laugh then I can recommend it, however if you are silly enough to think that it is a legitimate reference book then you will be disappointed.
a great sourse for all writers.......2006-12-06
I bought this book at a used book store because it intrigued me. I'm a writer but not specifically a 'romance' writer and i have to say that the phrases in this book are VERY useful. Any semi-practiced writer would be able to turn and twist many of the phrases in this book into something they could use for description, dialogue tags and practically anything else they put their mind to. It contains more than just phrases, such as tables of descriptions like it will list a color such as brown and then underneath there will be about 20 different way to bring that color into your book without using just 'brown'. I agree with one of the reviews that alot of the phrases are kind of corney but it's not a big deal unless you are someone who like to tell everyone you know you're writing a book but don't actually want to put in the long hours of effort to hone your craft. A good writer can use this book for reference while a bad one will only use it to 'cut, copy, paste, and won't get much benefit if they don't use their imagination. I'm sure that someone who gives this book a bad review is also someone who is looking for that magic 'something' to make their writing easier. If you are one of those people then don't bother, you need to work on your writing skills instead of relying on someone elses. If not then you will find this book useful.
Book Description
In Paul Jasmin's hauntingly beautiful new book, Lost Angeles, the city takes on a quality of light and personality known only to someone who has experienced it first hand. Here are the "tarnished angels" that hang out on Hollywood Boulevard or in local motel rooms, that have come to L.A. looking for the American dream, Hollywood style, and have quickly discovered it takes more than just desire to succeed. Jasmin combines formally fluid pictures of these youths languishing in dreamlike settings or in erotically charged compositions--clothed and unclothed. His images present the viewer with a personal survey of Los Angeles, of the place and the people who live there, some of whom have realized their dreams, some of whom are still searching. A major figure in the world of photography and an influence on many of today's young artists, Jasmin has included among his subjects his friends, including Sofia Coppola, who along with long-time friend and admirer Bruce Weber, have contributed essays that explore the depths of this truly rarefied vision. They add yet another dimension to his portrait of a town they all love.
Customer Reviews:
Lush and sensual, full of light, hope and promise........2006-12-13
Paul Jasmin lives and works in Hollywood and his photographs are infused with both the light and the grit of this section of Los Angeles. In an age of digital manipulation, Jasmin's work has the depth and richness of film and the practiced eye of an artist who knows of composition, texture, and above all feeling.
True that many of his subjects are young and beautiful. But nothing about them seems forced. They are relaxing in the afternoon light, on a bed near a window, or reading at a long dining table in an old room with faded wallpaper. Some are nude, some are not, but in most of the images one senses an empathy in Mr. Jasmin that cannot be faked.
You can walk in the same steps as Mr. Jasmin if your visit Whitley Heights. The old 1920's buildings are here, the ones with the crooked wooden floorboards and the casement windows. You may also see young hopefuls rushing up the hill, carrying their backpacks, on their way home from an audition, under the palms.
Seen it all.......2006-09-22
These photos are supposed to be showing the real and gritty lives of struggling and/or disillusioned seekers of stardom. But you've seen all these photos or their near cousins before, and they are obviously posed when they're the type of thing that should be candid. Well, the photographer did a good job of making them LOOK real. It would have helped if he had varied the models and settings more.
This is my city........2005-09-07
This is my Los Angeles. The one I see when I walk around on streets, staring at things. The one I try to capture with every piece of fiction I write. This is it.
So many portrayals of Los Angeles, whether fictional, nonfictional, or photographical, take all the wrong parts of California cliche and try to call it LA. Look, here are some movie stars. Look, here are some bored rich kids. Look, here's the 'underbelly of Hollywood', whatever that means.
Paul Jasmin gets it right. The dirty pretty people wearing leather. The graffiti, the cigarettes, the lounging around, the leopard print. One of my favourite images features a scruffy, aging writer at his laptop, surrounded by books and wearing a shirt that says 'When we were punk'. It's so far from any travel guide with the Hollywood sign on the front. I just want to cheer, //Here it is. This is it. This is my Los Angeles.//
A Mesmerizing Look at Los Angeles.......2005-01-05
At last someone has created a photographic portfolio that examines and celebrates the City of the Angels with all the fulfilled and aborted dreams of life in the golden spotlight that this city represents. Paul Jasmin is a sensitive photographer and in these plentiful works in both luxurious color and soft duotones he has sought and found youths in search of the rainbow, capturing them in pensive hopeful moments and private sad stances as the pot of gold either absorbs or eludes them.
Jasmin's settings are imaginative yet never contrived and the people he photographs are at once beautiful and intransigent. Some are in Hollywoodesque costume while others are nude. No matter the pose, Jasmin retains a respect for the model and for the models' intact or bruised dreams.
Opening the book are comments by Bruce Weber, one of the finest photographers of the male nude, and by Sofia Coppola, a sensitive director and `friend' to the hopeful vagrants and to Los Angeles as a city of dreams. Together with Jasmin's photographs they have created a book that is a beautiful art piece as well as a gentle psychological reverie about Los Angeles. Highly recommended. Grady Harp
