Book Description
Flextime, telecommuting, compressed work week, job sharing, downshifting, and hot desking--these terms are infiltrating our vocabulary at an increasing rate, keeping pace with change in the workplace. Although there is a large body of literature on the changing nature of work and workplace flexibility, there is no handbook that synthesizes the research on all aspects of this topic. Pulling together the vast literature on this subject, Avery and Zabel explain the concept of flexible work, trace the origin and growth of this workplace trend, and review the research on a range of flexible work arrangements. Workplace flexibility is international in scope. Companies, both in the United States and abroad, have become increasingly interested in implementing flexible work arrangements. The authors include a chapter on companies in North America, Western Europe, and the United Kingdom that have been leaders in implementing flexible work arrangements. They identify areas ripe for additional research, suggest a broad array of resources, and discuss strategies for locating additional information, including relevant databases, Internet resources, organizations, and search terms. This is a valuable handbook for managers, researchers, and students working or studying in the areas of human resource management, industrial/organizational psychology, and the sociology of work.
Book Description
Slow Food is sweeping the nation, at a snail's pace. This international organization was started in Italy by people who perceive McDonald's as the symbol of a society that is overshooting its own limits. The greatest loss of all is the pleasure of eating foods that are made without the restrictions of time.
Many of the cheeses portrayed in this delightful bookstracciata, giuncata, formaggio di fossa, formaggetta della valle Argentinaare not household names and they probably never will be. They're a few of the 201 traditional Italian farmhouse cheeses lovingly described in this new book from Slow Food International as a contribution to the conservation of a vast heritage of local products, born of Italy's extraordinarily varied landscapes, natural environments, dairy breeds, and cheesemaking techniques.
Starting with illustrated descriptions of traditional and industrial cheesemaking, Slow Food's authors take us through the processes of buying, tasting, and storing cheeses. Dictionaries of tasting terms and the language of cheeses and cheesemaking provide essential preludes for the heart of this bookdescriptions of Italy's farmhouse cheeses, traditionally made from cow's, ewe's, and goat's milk.
Organized by region and accompanied by elegant color photographs, each description covers how the cheese is made and matured, along with historical and geographic nuggets.
Written by people in love with farmhouse cheeses, and with everything small, local, slow, and traditional foods and food systems represent, this is an informative and hopeful book, celebrating a rich, rural European tradition. This book will make you start packing your bags for a cheese lover's tour of Italy.
Customer Reviews:
Fun to read.......2007-09-05
This is a fun book to read if you are interested in Italian cheeses. Each cheese has a photo and a nice description. The only improvement I would suggest would be to provide similar consistent information on each cheese such as flavor, texture, etc. While this information is often supplied, it is buried in the text making comparison among the different cheeses difficult. But it's a great little book, very comprehensive and interesting as a cultural review of the country's cheese.
Yum!.......2007-05-13
This is an incredible and thorough resource on Italian cheeses. It doesn't have every Italian cheese known to man, but it comes close. The book is organized by region, and each page is devoted to one cheese. Fun to read if you love exploring new foods and a great resource if you're traveling to Italy.

From reviews of previous editions:
"An excellent primer about these fascinating animals. Highly recommended."
Wildlife Book Review
"Something very good in a small package: a natural history and practical ecology of the flying mammals that, next to wolves, must be the most unjustly persecuted creatures on earth.... The color photos and line drawings that profusely illustrate are top quality."
ALA Booklist
"These breathtaking photographs depict bats as startlingly beautiful creatures. The combination of excellent photography and enlightening text in
America's Neighborhood Bats is sure to stimulate an appreciation of the winged mammals in mostif not allreaders."
Wildlife Review
Since its first publication in 1988,
America's Neighborhood Bats has changed the way we look at bats by underscoring their harmless and beneficial nature. In this second revised edition, Merlin Tuttle offers bat aficionados the most up-to-date bat facts, including a wealth of new information on bat house design and current threats to bat survival.
Customer Reviews:
Informative book, goo read........2007-01-03
A good book for folks wanting to learn about our night-time visitors. Well worth buying.
Wonderful book!.......2003-07-31
I bought this book just because I was curious about bats. I had always thought they were "bad", until I visited a conservatory in Wyoming that had a bat house and explained how important they are. That was a surprise to me.
This book opened my eyes to how beneficial bats really are. It talks about the facts, myths and misconceptions about bats... what's true, what's not. It tells what to do if a bat comes into your house, and how to evict them if they have taken up residence in your attic or somewhere else you don't want them to be.
The book is well-written and an "easy" read. It has lots of good photos, and tells about some of the different species of bats and where they live. I recommend it for older children (maybe 10 and up) and adults. Well worth the money.
Merlin Tuttle: America's Neighborhood Bats.......2002-10-05
This is a very informative, well wriiten and beautifully photographed book on bats. The book includes beautiful color photographs of the most commonly seen bats in America. One of the most appreciated sections is the "Beginners' Key To American Bats", a well written, easy to comprehend section on identifying common bats of the region and placing them in their proper groups. Very important if you intend to build bat houses and hope to attract occupants and just general knowledge.
The book includes several other interesting chapters besides identification. It shows how bats navigate with radar. It addresses the many negative myths of bats, it explains how beneficial bats are in nature. If you want or need to know anything at all about these interesting creatures, THIS is the book and Merlin Tuttle is the expert to seek out. And even if you only need to know enough about bats to humanely evict them from your belfry, this book comes with even that information!
The author has dedicated his life to these interesting mammals. Even without knowing that fact, you can see from the entertaining way Mr Tuttle writes, how much he cares. All of his books are excellent. Check them all out!
A great, informative book.......1998-10-09
Dr. Tuttle has set out to redeem the reputation of the bat clan and if people would just read this book I believe he would succeed. This book is packed with information that will help dispel the fear and misunderstanding with which people view bats, but at the same time it is by no means too technical to be readily understood (I first read it when I was about fourteen iirc and enjoyed it as much then as I do now.) I would recommend this book to anyone anywhere who is the least bit interested in nature and also to anyone who is fearful or concerned about bats in their nieghborhood.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Great Coach - Average Book.......2006-08-04
This book is certainly not a "page-turner" and sometimes I barely wanted to open it, just looking forward to a more interesting coaching book.
Rinus Michels was probabaly a very good coach and had great success with the Dutch national team as a coach during 70s (reached WC FInal 1978 in Argentine) and 80s and obviously has had a great impact on the evolution of Dutch soccer including sucessfull wotk with the Dutch FA and Dutch Youth soccer.
He mentions a lot of interesting things that can be worth taking into account about how the Dutch youth setup is working and what things are important to know about youth soccer in general. I.e At what age you should do that and don't do that
But this book hardly contains any really good exercices to improve your teambuilding. There are only a few exercises in the book and no pictures or diagrams to help you really understand what the exercises is all about. Overall, teambuilding is a broad topic but I felt I would have gained more experience and insight in teambuilding reading this book.
It should also be known that this book mostly cover dutch soccer and that sometimes can be a bit frustrating. For a genuine soccer fan you would have anticipated that he would have learned a lot from his time as a coach of FC Barcelona but barely mention that spell of his life in "Teambuilding". But I suppose he writes about what he knows best.
I don't want to say that you sholdn't read this book because there is always something that you learn with a soccer coaching book that you can apply in soccer on a daily basis. There are always things to pick up but there are for sure better books out there if you want to be a better soccer coach.
Still dont know what it was about.......2006-02-18
This book is way to complicated and doesnt really do anything to get to success. It is all about high levels of soccer and nothing the normal coach can related to.
Michels Worthy of Title - "FIFA's Coach of The Century".......2004-02-03
Rinus Michel's book, together with Bert Van Lingen's book "Coaching Soccer" provide the framework of the "Dutch Vision" of how to coach soccer. This book is a fantastic resource for any soccer coach at any level, any convenor at the youth soccer level, or any person tasked with administering a soccer program.
Michels explains the vital importance of small-sided (4v4) games in teaching young players how to play soccer, establishes objectives for the technical development of young players by age group, discussed systems of play, and gives real-life examples of how to manage the dynamics of professional and international teams.
This may well be the most important soccer book ever written.

Customer Reviews:
Hasn't arrived.......2007-09-14
I would dearly like to review this book, but it hasn't arrived. Although Amazon's Where's My Stuff page said that there is no outstanding orders, the time estimate said it should arrive (New Zealand) between 4 Sept - 14 Sept, so I waited. The shipment was sent 14 August. I have requested assistance through Support, but haven't heard at all from Amazon. Generally, I have found Amazon very prompt, and delivery (International Standard) very good - about 2- 3 weeks. I hope that I will hear soon. Better, I'd like to post a more positive review for this book (and the other that was shipped with it).
The Scarlet Letter........2007-02-02
The book is okay until Chapter 17: Bias Free Writing.
I'm not certain if it's a sermon from the Gospel of Political Correctness, or an excuse for the authors to be scolds. And they have a problem with every form of group affiliation. The Special Olympics gets a slap, too. "Special" is now, officially, a hateful word. They suggest you regularly consult with all the different ethnic and social groups to learn what's okay to say.
I'm reminded of an astronomy lecture I attended many years ago. The featured speaker was to talk about his career in astronomy. And he did for much of his presentation. But at the end he digressed to talking about his religious convictions, and the speech became an attack on those who held different beliefs. The president of the astronomy association finally had enough and told the man to shut up and leave.
Much of the book is informative and I learned a few helpful tricks.
But! Guys? Shut up and go away.
Like school? Then maybe you'll like this book........2006-12-10
Even though I finish most books I read, I couldn't get through this one. It was like attending school: bloody boring and filled with exercises. I decided I would go through a chapter a night, but my decision was in vain - after a few nights, I quit. I recommend instead "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser. I couldn't put it down. Also recommended, of course, is "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White.
A Transformational Guide That Can Turn You into an Effective Writer.......2006-11-27
Most people hated writing essays in school. At work, memorandums continue to be a pain to read . . . and an even bigger pain to write.
For the last three years, I've encouraged my graduate students to begin their studies by writing an essay based on Adler's and Van Doren's How to Read a Book. Then, I ask the same students to read The Classic Guide to Better Writing, summarize its key points in 1,000 words, and then write 2,500 words about what they learned about how to improve the last essay they wrote.
After that experience, each student has become an effective writer . . . even though most were not before reading and applying this book.
I don't know of another resource that is nearly as effective for learning how to be an effective writer of essays.
Although it takes time to develop this foundation skill, you'll save much more time in the long run . . . and be much more effective in whatever you do if you read and apply Dr. Flesch's classic.
Be sure to do the exercises!

Book Description
As the cost of doing business increases, call centers and help desks are frequently moving overseas. How can your center remain competitive? Is pooling the best way to slash your wait times? James Abbott concisely answers these questions as he leads you through the world of process-centered customer service. Strategic and tactical terms, how to choose metrics to measure, and the miracle of Queuing Science are covered thoroughly, using easy-to-grasp anecdotes to explain the key technical topics.
Customer Reviews:
Required Reading For All Call Center Managers.......2006-01-23
James Abbott has produced a handbook that is required reading for all Call Center Managers. It provides a step-by-step method for metrics creation and why improvement is not possible unless you can measure Call Center activity.
This book must be on every employees desk in the Call Center and the Metrics should be based on this book. The books 11 chapters are easy to read and understand. James clearly outlines the reasons why metrics must be real time and the benefit in performance associated with this method.
You should read this book, as I did, just to understand how implementation of this methodology will cut costs and improve customer satisfaction.

Bringing Call Centers Into The 21st Century.......2005-12-01
From the introduction this book explains how metrics must be more than just numbers or report cards. They are proactive tools to get much more out of your call center. The book then sets out ways to create powerful metrics that lead to winning decisions for your center.
Chapter One: Having It All
The first chapter looks at why modern metrics are required in centers with numerous monitors. Old ways of thinking will not do. Everyday, real world examples are given to highlight critical metric sources. These are a must in balacing wait time, cost and performance.
Chapter Two: Call Center Metrics
This chapter begins with Abbott's signature approach to decision making and and the discussion of mstrics that compliment this approach. He introduces the unique Dependency Diagram and metric blueprint. On page 38 he lists six key proactive metrics.
Chapter Three: Monitoring Metrics
Chapter three makes cetain you are uaing clear thinking when monitoring your meticws. Again, real world examples and critical statistics are used to help you have a clear look at your center.
Chapter Four: Metric Dashboard
Using building blocks already mentioned this chapter begins putting together a call center dashboard. Who does what? How do we set it up? What is my part?
Chapter Five and Six: Tactical Decisions and Metrics
How do we know when real change has happened? What are the "alarms" to look for when monitoring the call center. We see how to read and use tactical metrics to avoid problems and run effective centers.
Chapters Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten: Strategic Decisions & Metrics
These chapters explain the strategic aspects of running your call center. They help you develop the strategic eye needed to bring your call center into the 21st century.
The book ends with a review of benefits that come from the effective use of metrics and how that is achieved. If you have the difficult responaibility of runing a call center, you need this book.
Excellent Book.......2005-11-11
I purchased this book as I am a director of a Call Center Unit. This book was very informative and had a lot to offer. Great books for excutives in the call center business! The book is written in a easy to read format with lots of great examples!
A book about metrics & statistics but not about call center.......2005-07-03
Based on the title I was expecting a lot about call center specific metrics. This is not the case. The focus is on statistics and metrics for tactical purpose (Quality Control Chart) and strategic view (Distribution, standard deviation). If you are familar with QC charts and statistics then the book does not have to offer a lot. For call center metrics it mentions only a few examples like abandonment rate or wait time in some sample. I was looking for an exhaustive list of call center metrics.
A Wakeup Call.......2004-07-15
"Abbott's book is a much-needed wakeup call. In order to compete, managers must use scientific methods, not gut feelings or hocus pocus. This book is back to basics--what needs to be monitored, why you need to monitor it, and who should make which decisions."

Book Description
The University of Michigan Press is pleased to announce the second volume in an annual series, the World Trade Forum. The Forum's members include scholars, lawyers, and government and business practitioners working in the area of international trade, law, and policy. They meet annually to discuss integration issues in international economic relations, focusing on a new theme each year.
The World Trade Forum 1998 deals with the issue of regulatory barriers. Contributors focus their attention on the implications that government intervention has on the principle of nondiscrimination, the cornerstone of the World Trade Organization. The chapters, which cover both the positive and the normative level, deal in particular with the issue of "like product" definition, and with mutual recognition agreements. The relevant WTO case law is presented and analyzed, and the roundtable discussions are primarily aimed at clarifying to what extent a constitutional function should be assigned to the WTO organs, if at all.
Contributors include: Christoph Bail, Jacques Bourgeois, Marco Bronckers, Thomas Cottier, William Davey, Paul Demaret, Piet Eeckhout, Crawford Falconer, Olivier Guillod, Meinhard Hilf, Gary Horlick, Robert Howse, Robert Hudec, Patrick Low, Aaditya Mattoo, Petros C. Mavroidis, Patrick Messerlin, Damien Neven, Kalypso Nicolaidis, David Palmeter, Ernst Ulrich Petresmann, Andre Sapir, and Michel Waelbroeck.
Thomas Cottier is Professor of Law, Institute of European and International Economic Law, University of Bern Law School. Petros C. Mavroidis is Professor of Law, University of Neuchâtel.

Book Description
In the post-Mao era, China's intellectuals have had a degree of intellectual freedom in the last twenty year not experienced since the 1949 revolution. Although China remains a Lenninist party state whose intellectuals still cannot criticize the political leadership or party without impunity, its economy has moved to the market and its society is in contact with the international community. Whereas in the Mao Zedong era intellectuals, with few exceptions, obediently carried out Mao's orders and expounded Maoist doctrine, in the post-Mao era intellectual life has become pluralistic and complex.
This edited volume highlights how Chinese intellectual activity has become more wide-ranging, more independent, more professionalized and more commercially oriented than ever before. The future impact of this activity on Chinese civil society is discussed as is the continually changing relationship between intellectuals and the party-state.
With Contributions form China scholars living both within and outside China, this volume provides the first comprehensive description of China's intellectuals in the post-Mao era. It is a topic, which will appeal to scholars of China as well as those whose research interests lie in Asian cultural studies and intellectual history.
