A Revolutionary's View In Favor of Socialism.......2005-08-31

Humanistic Socialism. When you read this book, you can really see the flexibility, a far cry and major difference from the scientific Hegelian materialism of Marx, the dogmatism of Luxemburg and the authoritarianism of Lenin. The difference is a socialism, which emphasizes the need to listen to and work with the people in a democratic means, rejecting the exploitation found in authoritarian and bureaucracy found in the former Soviet and European socialism.

Of course this socialism is also against the neo-liberal free market fundamentalism in the framework of the capitalistic economy dominated by the strong players who take advantage over the weak, under the same rules applied for all under the misleading terminology of "free trade."

In this system of humanistic socialism, che speaks of the flexibility of state control, which in turn, acts in accordance between the state and the masses or proletariat, which includes compromises as to private ownership in certain cases, as in the many farmers, and in creating a societal structure devoid of exploitation, one based on the principles of socialism in an equalitarian, fair and just society where all are entered into the economic privileges which are available. There are of course limitations, however much is due not to the system itself but to the U.S. blockade against Cuba in obtaining raw materials, oil and other necessary items for people to survive and have any degree of prosperity.

The esteem in the whole thing is Guevara and Castro's efforts in this regard, rejecting all dogmatic and Hegelian formulas which create bureaucratic nightmares as witnessed in Soviet communism and the Eastern European block, which subsequently failed and is no more. Unfortunately, the results of such a fall are U.S. imperialism on the rise and on a much more dangerous level to the world community of autonomous and independent existence.

Now in response to the claim against socialism, (Von Mises) that socialism cannot perform economic planning from lack of a free market, Guerra speaks of a planning of fixed prices and trade agreements prior to the trading itself. The trading of goods for goods and services is also endorsed.

The only question that really hangs in the balance is that while humanistic socialism is flexible, fights exploitation, fights bureaucracy and so forth, it is still state control. And like a monarchy, the kingdom is ideal when the king works for the common interest of the proletariat, but when his successor replaces him or her, the balance of power can be radically altered to the point of Leninist and Stalinist authoritarian proportions. And so it is, the humanistic socialism practiced by Castro hangs in the fragility of his successors and/or the successors of the present leaders in the government. Over all, I find Che's political philosophy in this book very well to both read and consider. There is no question in the issues raised of both the fight of super power imperialism and the need for an equalitarian, non-exploitive government and society.

However my above question on socialism strongly argues against this fragility. For what Che's socialism espouses is really democracy, unlike the capitalistic representative forms. And this difference entails both education and self education where all citizens become active participants in government, where the culture itself is self-governing, removed from economic alienations. So in this sense, the succession of leaders would not alter the social and cultural fabric of the democratic individualization found in socialistic practice.

If you want to get your feet wet in the waters of comunist ideals, this is a good book to start with.

If we help them in ways that fit with their customs and lifestyles, we can make sustainable change that will make long-term benefits.

The title SAVE THREE LIVES comes from the idea that if this book only saves three lives, it was worth the effort to write.

I am grateful to Mr. Rodale for writing this book. It woke me up to some serious problems with the way we give aid to Third World countries. And he provides simple solutions that, if implemented, really will save many lives.

I hate this book, here is why!.......2001-04-05

In a nutshell, this book is just bad. It's bad for many reasons including; it is poorly written, even more poorly edited, terribly designed, the illustrations are lacking, it contains inferior photographs, misinformation and is very, very badly marketed. An example of how bad you can expect this book to be comes from the publisher's review of their own book, which disrespectfully refers to rabbits as "fast growing critters." Who uses that terminology anymore?!?! Followed by a sentence opening with the capitalized word "Offers" at the beginning of the next sentence - What offers?, Who offers?, Which offers? (Who are these morons?)

Furthermore, it is published by Farmer's Digest Magazine, which touts itself as a narrowly edited version of other magazines for people in the agriculture business. That is to say, a bad book published by a bad parent organization, which is a sell-out to the larger industry it serves. If you visit the web site for Farmers Digest and look at recipes for example, 'rabbit' does not appear anywhere. Now I ask you, even if you were having a craving for rabbit and wanted rabbit recipes would you purchase a book that doesn't even have the support of its parent publisher and website? They obviously have money to burn by publishing this (*ah...junk?) in the first place. Dime-store romance novels, litigation materials, automotive manuals, and even chewing gum wrappers present more salavatingly tantalizing reading, and possibly more information on rabbits.

Even if you are interested in breeding rabbits for profit by their fur or as meat, this book is still not for you, that's how bad this book is. Contact your local 4-H agency, local community college, your local veterinarian, or community library for better and more complete information. Really, you are better off buying stock in Yahoo!, than you are by purchasing this book hoping to make money off of rabbits as a commercially viable product.

The Good News: A highly acclaimed and well seasoned book which offers; guidance, resources, veterinarian tips and much more, that will help you not only to decide to own a rabbit as a pet, but help you really care for it, The House Rabbit Handbook, is the book for you.

Dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, rodents, horses, goats, sheep - all can, and do serve the function of "COMPANION." It may blow your hair back to find out that owning a rabbit is a lot like owning a dog or cat. They do have personalities, they do make noises, they have habits, a few special dietary needs, rabbits can be trained, and are very clean animals. Rabbits come in a huge variety of sizes & colors, and have needs just like any other companion!

Thus, I end with the concept of a pet, as opposed to a product. If you are interested in a rabbit as PET, especially a house pet in lieu of or in addition to other pets you already have, I cannot rave enough about what a great experience, or about how totally and thoroughly excellent the House Rabbit Handbook by Marinell Harriman is. Go look for it right now.

THIS IS ABOUT FORMER DETROIT LION GREAT BARRY SANDERS. HE WROTE THIS HIMSELF WITH A LITTLE HELP. HIS STORY IS SHORT, SWEET AND VERY WELL WRITTEN. IT ALSO INCLUDES A DVD SHOWING SOME OF HIS RUNS. I THINK ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS IS HIS REASONS FOR RETIRING WHEN HE WAS ON THE VERGE OF BECOMING THE TOP RUSHER OF ALL TIME. BARRY IS A CHRISTIAN AND IS HIS OWN MAN. Barry Sanders Highlight DVD...... FINALLY!!! But..............2006-07-08

I've been looking for a Barry Sanders highlights DVD for years.... good news - there finally is one, it comes with the book. Bad news? It's only about 20 minutes long, and doesn't show many of his spectacular runs. The book is outstanding, as it's written pretty much by Barry himself, and has great comments from other players in the NFL, giving him the praise he deserves. Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, they have entire 60 minute DVD's (and more) on their lives.... if any player in the history of football should have one, it's Barry Sanders. All in all, if you like football at all, and appreciate magic, this is a must have, from the most talented running back in the history of the game.

Barry Sanders story...short and sweet.......2004-02-06

The newly elected Hall of Fame running back, Barry Sanders, was always a man of many words and his recently released autobiography is fitting in its 139 page, picture-filled 8 x 10 work.
If a picture says a thousand words, than the included 19-minute DVD featuring Sanders and his accomplishments is worth a million and add visuals to the former Detroit Lion running backs accomplishments.
"Now You See Him..." is the entire life history of Sanders, the people that shaped his life and his accomplishments along the way, from North High School, Oklahoma State University and his only NFL team, the Detroit Lions.
Sanders writes of his football beginnings and the beginning of his doubtful beginnings in football due to his small stature. Sanders admitted being shorter, but always faster.
His high school football career was stunted (pun intended) as he played behind older brother, Byron, and was not utilized as a tailback until his senior year and after a coaching change.
Sanders writes of himself as being a team player, foregoing a chance to take the state rushing title after he had 262 yards in the final season game. His coach gave him the option of securing the title, but deferred to his teammates playing.
Surprisingly, Sanders was not highly recruited and took the opportunity to rush for the Cowboys at Oklahoma State University, again behind a superb back, Thurman Thomas.
As the third pick in the 1988 NFL draft, Sanders began his 10-year career with the Detroit Lions, playing under Wayne Fontes for 8-years and Bobby Ross for two turbulent years.
Moving through the to later chapters the reader discovers Sanders' thoughts about the pressure of surpassing Walter Payton's rushing record as the former Chicago Bear was dealing with his own life-threatening illness.
Sanders explains his side of retirement in chapter 15 "I Knew it was Over," explaining the Lions 5-11 season, consistent troublesome negotiations regarding his renewed contracts and the direction of the team.
Sanders includes his retirement letter, sent to the Wichita Eagle, but expands on his disgruntlement with Detroit general manger Chuck Schmidt.
What the book may be lacking, the DVD adds, but does not totally save the book.
The 19-minute DVD includes television footage of Sanders as his best, utilizing his "jump back" style of running in high school, college and the NFL.
If after 139 pages you are not impressed with Sanders, his life and career, the DVD is a waste. If you are a fan of Sanders, his team and his skill, the DVD is a great highlight film included with the book.
Sanders is soft-spoken in his words about his career, his teammates and his competitors. His book is easy to read, picturesque and his DVD inclusion technologically innovative, similar to his running style.

Barry Sanders is perhaps the next coming of James Joyce. If you don't believe me, just take a look at her brilliant command of prose. It flows ever so delicately through the travails of her life. The language has such a rhythm that is unparalleled by contemporary literature. Five stars. A-plus.

I borrowed this book from the library and now would like to have a copy of my own. I liked the author's informal conversational style. This book was easy to read and organized into chapters which you can read all at once or just refer to as needed.

It's true that much of her advice seems obvious: tell the truth, don't interrupt, ask questions. However, judging from many of the conversations I have had, we often forget these common-sense rules. The most useful parts of the book for me were the suggestions for opening a conversation, dealing with difficult people and recovering from conversational blunders.

This book is not a manual for learning how to manipulate people socially, in business or romance. Instead it is a handbook for people who are interested in turning conversation into connections. Most of the interactions we have with our family, friends and coworkers have very little content. This book helps us build the skills to make the most of each interaction.

Didn't learn anything, but good reminder.......2006-12-11

I picked this up after seeing it on Ralph Nader's summer reading list of 2006. It's a fast read, and fairly well written. For someone who has *never* read anything on building relationships or basics of conversation, this is a good book. However, I've read several in this genre before, and it doesn't present anything new. I didn't learn anything, but since the time investment wasn't very great, I don't feel as if I sacrificed much of my time. It was a good reminder for the basics I already had learned.

I wouldn't exactly say that it's not a good book, however, it is very basic. Unless you are a teenager or a young adult, or have problems connecting in social situations because of shyness or otherwise, you will find that this book doesn't offer anything new. I don't need to buy a book that tells me that I need to ask questions, listen more than talk, and advise me on how to accept compliments. But of course for anyone who does, this might be helpful.

I really enjoyed this book and found it very useful. Margaret Shepherd addresses just about any situation one can think of. If everyone owned this book and followed these conversational guidelines, the world would be a much better place.

It is just wasting for the money. Nothing special about this book. you are better reading the help file which come with CRM software. Beside the help file is more organized by providing the steps in order.

Maybe the worst tech book ever.......2004-07-09

As stated in a previous review, there are publishing errors that unforgivable. For instance layout problems make Chapter 6 almost unreadable.

I got to page 62 before reading anything worthwhile. I could go on. . .

I had grown to distrust this publisher, and now I remember why.

Book needed more beta testing.......2004-04-20

If you are looking at Microsoft CRM, this book does give a decent overview of some portions of the product. But in areas where additional assistance could really be beneficial (like customizing the application to work with other web apps), it is often much too brief. It does a very poor job of explaining detailed technical configuration tasks, settling instead for common sense advice about working witht users to make sure they accept the solution. A third of the chapters adress just general CRM topics, not anything specific to the Microsoft product.

At its best, the book will point out some areas where Microsoft dropped the ball, such as no ability to validate state abbreviations. But there are too few of these warnings and they are scattered sporadically about the book making it of limited use in evaluating the product.

At its worst, the book has a large number of printing errors that the most basic proofreading effort should have caught. Many diagrams are missing or do not appear with the correct caption. This makes some portions of the book very difficult to comprehend.

In short, this book has been of some value to me because it has improved my understanding of this product. But this book falls far short of being a definitive guide to the software and the sloppy mistakes are irritating.

The EU's eastern enlargement has coincided with a decade of rapid progress toward closer European integration. Poole argues that this enlargement, more than any previous one, is closely linked with major EU projects of integration, including justice and home affairs, monetary union, a common foreign and security policy, and the effort to create a constitutional treaty. By requiring the eastern states to adopt extensive reforms in their judicial and police systems, the enlargement process makes it easier for the EU to combat terrorism and organized crime and control the flow of immigration from outside Europe. The monetary union was deliberately put in place before enlargement (which might have made the task more difficult), but now the Stability and Growth Pact requires reform to make it flexible enough to serve a larger, more diverse Union. The addition of ten new states provides one of the main incentives for drafting a constitutional treaty. Finally, the candidate countries are helping to lay the groundwork for the next EU enlargement into southeastern Europe. As the first college text to explore the impact of the eastern enlargement on European integration, this book can be used effectively in comparative government, economics, European history, and international relations courses.

This is a not only useful book for students of European politics and law. It outlines possible lines of divergence in European integration that could benefit consultants and strategists looking for new opportunitites. Junge was awared the Europa prize for the framework developed in the book.
