Book Description
* Do taxes help more than they hurt?* What effect does redistributing wealth have on our economy---and those who participate in its redistribution?* What is the role of government?* How does an economy work?James Gwartney, Richard L. Stroup, and Dwight R. Lee are three of the most prominent economists today, and in Common Sense Economics they show us why economic understanding is an essential ingredient for life in today's society, a key element that empowers those who possess it to better take charge of their own lives and their own responsibilities to their society. In clear, powerful language free of any hint of jargon or obscurity, they illuminate the basic principles of supply and demand, private ownership, trade, and more. In a world where free trade, taxes, and government spending are issues everyone needs to understand, Common Sense Economics is a lucid, simple explanation of how and why our economy and our world work the way they do, and how and why individuals and nations prosper.
Customer Reviews:
Understandable Theory.......2007-08-27
A well written book. I do not believe in all that was stated in free trade but that would only be my opinion. The very best and why this should be mandatory reading in high school is the final thirty pages or so explaining compound interest, saving, investing and paying for college. I strongly believe each young man should share in the cost of college. If we are going to compete in a world market we better learn that college is for filling the head with knowledge and not the belly with beer. Unless you wish to be a telemarketer for some third world country with your degree.
Free Market.......2007-05-07
Excellent, should be required reading for all 8th graders and socialists. Gives a down to earth understanding of the advantage to ALL with free market economics and the adverse effects when the government tries to do too much.
Common Sense Economics.......2007-01-10
Easy to read, easy to understand. The last time I tried to understand economic principles was in required college courses, and barely made it through any of them. This book clarifies the often deliberate obfuscation of this subject, and reveals what every American ought to know about how our system is supposed to work, but a lot of times doesen't. A must-read for every conservative concerned about liberal economic ideas and governmental meddling in Capitalism.
A good introduction to economics for libertarians.......2006-04-18
The authors of this book present an introduction for readers who have not studied economics before and who are predisposed to accept the a priori approach to economic theory advocated by libertarian economists and political thinkers. There is a major error that is presented on p.93 in a discussion of government spending and deficits. The authors claim that J M Keynes favored deficit finance in order to stimulate the economy during economic downturns. This is simply false.Keynes never favored deficit finance.Deficit Finance is the brain child of Abba Lerner's functional finance.Lerner's approach influenced American Keynesians such as Alvin Hansen and Walter Heller.Keynes's approach,as opposed to the American Keynesian School, emphasized continuous low rates of interest and the avoidance of excessive debt-speculative finance, based on,for example, margin loans.Keynes would have suggested that the central bank implement a policy of skewing credit availability away from loans for speculators, greenmailers, leveraged buyouts, hostile takeovers a la Icahn,T Boone Pickens, etc.
Common Sense Read For a Sometimes Dry Subject.......2006-02-17
This is essentially a newer edition of a book previously released by the author. The writing is clear and concise on many basic economic principles. If you are looking for an indepth analysis of how economics effects socio-political issues, this is not the book you are looking for. However, if you are looking to begin setting a solid foundation for economic understanding there is perhaps no better place to begin.

Customer Reviews:
NO BREAKTHROUGH HERE.......2002-09-01
This rating is coming from someone who has been working in the contingency and retained technical recruiting industry for the past 10 years. I forced myself through the book (cover to cover) in a little more than one hour. I understand why experienced recruiters who were expecting an innovative exposition, were annoyed and dissatisfied. They are justified. Certain raters of this book have misrepresented its quality and the intellect of the material within. Moreover, I am surprised that no one has called the numerous spelling and grammatical errors into question. If you want a superficial, one-dimensional outline of the technical recruiting industry, then this book may satisfy you. If you are already a competent recruiter, don't expect a breakthrough here. This book was not written through the mind and heart of a real-world, front-line, technical recruiter.
Don't Buy It.......2002-08-13
This book reads like a pamphlet that you might get in a high school "Careers" class. Most of the "chapters" are no more than five pages long. When I paid 50 bucks for this book, I assumed that it would be sophisticated and intelligent. It is not.
Basic but a waste.......2002-06-12
The information in this book was only mildly helpful in that it is a mere sketch of recruitment practices. The author skims the surface of many topics but lacks depth. It seems like he was under the gun to meet a deadline and is overcharging people for what appears to be an outline of a much more substantial book.
A Pleasant Surprise.......2001-11-10
My expectations of this book were not too great, as I have other books which went in different directions than I wanted. This one is a winner for me because it hits right on what I need to do my job. I can say that if you need a complete book on recruiting techies this is really it. Getting into the mind of applicants, getting into the right media, that's the stuff I need, and this one has it.
A tremendous help.......2001-11-02
The format, content, and tone of this book are a good combination to make this book the most helpful of any I have read. It covers all I wanted to know in depth and in an easy reading style. I've been told that in any new endeavor, "you don't know what you don't know", and that comes true here. I read about areas I had not even thought about and they have helped me. Well written and user friendly.

Brings the flavor of the outdoors home........1999-05-28
Dottie Reeder's "From Blueberries to Wild Roses" brings the flavor of the outdoors home. She presents recipes for berries, clover, cranberries, dandelions, hazelnuts, maple syrup, wild roses and more. Though most of the main ingredients were once gathered in the wild, many of them are now as accessible as the nearest grocery store, or in the case of foodstuffs like dandelions and lamb's quarters, as close as the front yard.

Customer Reviews:
This book lives up to its title! Buy it!.......2007-10-12
I'm a serious athlete and train people professionlly (as a career) and this book does what it claims... it takes the latest and greatest information on running and endurance training in general and puts it all under one title in an easy to digest format. Train smarter, not harder. Buy this book!
Great synthesis of recent research, an easy read.......2006-11-14
I used to do triathlons, but now I figure I'm primarily a runner. I just turned forty, and I am on a quest to get my 5k time from the 19 minute range down to 18 minutes. I figure if I can do that I'll start winning or placing in my new age category; that's my way of dealing with middle age and mid-life crises and so on.
I typically read a couple running books a month, looking for ways to improve, and this book really stands out. The author cites numerous studies and relates his personal experience in incorporating new discoveries into his training. If you subscribe to Runners World, you're probably familiar with most of these advances, but it's all thoughtfully considered here in a way that lends itself to reading cover to cover.
Great read cover to cover.......2006-10-07
I just finished reading The Cutting-Edge Runner. This is one of the few running books that I read from cover to cover. Many of the books out there fill half the pages with running plans, this book focuses on providing great useful content. I'm training for the Richmond Marathon, and have already incorporated a few of Matt's suggestions into my program. The book is truely on the cutting edge, Matt provides the latest concepts on how to run faster, longer and healthier.
A great book, with a SERIOUS CAVEAT.......2006-07-28
This is an absolutely amazing, and probably most cutting-edge book on running you can find on today's book market (summer 2006), and a large part of its appeal is the fact that the content and the author's numerous recommendations are based on recent, serious, and carefully analyzed research.
This means, alas, that the book is VERY technical, and often assumes that the reader will understand without further need for explanations some fairly arcane terminology in the areas of sports medicine, biomechanics, and physiology. Admittedly, the author makes a good-faith effort to explain some of the more complex issues, but sometimes even that is not quite enough for this reader.
Although it will be a good, informative, and worthwhile read for all those interested in running, the recommendations and advice will be of use mostly to (and are almost exclusively directed at) serious, competitive, and very experienced runners.
I have to admit that since I focus on running as only a small part of a basic general fitness program, i.e., I have completely NO interest in running competitively, or in training for a marathon :) - most of this info. is not for me. Still, for those more focused on running competitively, it is probably a very valuable, cutting-edge read.
I hope that at some point the author will take the time and write a book based on the same well-informed sources, but directed at a more casual runner, and general reader without sports-medicine background like me.
Not the same old stuff.......2005-10-02
It's tough to find a running book that isn't just a rehash of the same old stuff. This excellent guide is very technical in places, but full of new information that you haven't heard a hundred times. Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
A Must-have for Cookbook/Food-based book Writers!.......2007-10-03
I stumbled upon Dianne's website while I was researching for my book proposal. I wasn't planning to write a cookbook but since I love food and this book is so unique, I got myself a copy anyway.
I'm pleasantly surprised! I've learnt a great deal about raising one's platform/profile before publishing a book, as well as the nuts & bolts of the publishing industry. This book is a MUST-HAVE for all aspiring cookbook writers!
A Motivating and Inspiring Read.......2007-07-23
An inspiring food writing with a stack of gastronimic literature to read through over a long weekend, I had a goal of finishing at least two of three books that were sitting on my coffee table. The first one I chose was "Will Write for Food" by Dianne Jacob. A food writer who's been writing since 1978, Dianne also instructs and coaches individuals and groups on becoming successful food writers. As she mentions in her book, she used to tell students to go check out books at the library about food writing to gain perspective of the business outside of class. After students repeadedly came back to her stating there were no books out there on food writing, Dianne decided she'd be the one to write it. So I guess one could say this is the first book published on the nuts and bolts of becoming a successful, professional food writer. I found the book incredibly helpful, honest and no-nonsense. Dianne has a gift for mixing honesty (don't quite your day job right away) with pep talks (just keep writing, you'll get there). She delivers practical advice and covers topics from writing cookbooks to the art of restaurant reviewing, pitching food article ideas to magazine editors to writing memoirs, and getting ficiton and nonfiction pieces published. The book also features a number of exercises at the end of each chapter for readers to stretch their creative muscles, like brainstorming exercises that assist in developing magazine article topics, writing your own food recipe and researching food and book publishing markets. Finishing the book inspired me to march forward and capture all the ideas floating in my head onto paper to get them closer to being published pieces of work. This is a book I will refer back to regularly.
Tight Focus on Food Writing.......2007-04-21
I have read many advice/guidance books on writing, and I truly found this book to have more practical and thorough information than all others I have read - and solely on the subject of food writing! The 'Interview Subjects,' 'Bibliography,' and 'Selected Web Sites' sections knocked my socks off. It is obvious that Dianne Jacob put a lot of time and effort into this book. I read it completely in just three days, and I will refer to it regularly for my food writing pursuits.
Glad I purchased it!!.......2007-02-12
I am so happy I bought this book. It has answered a ton of questions I had.
Excellent Resource!.......2007-02-02
Although I've published work in other areas - I really didn't know much about food writing or how to get started. This book was the perfect guide because it gave me the big picture (e.g. food writing can be anything from writing resturant reviews to writing recipes and cookbooks, to writing a personal memoir or fiction) and the nuts and bolts (e.g. it clearly explains how food writing is different from other genres and how to get published). The author has so much real-life and professional experience, that it was like having my own personal consultant! I highly recommend it to anybody who wants to write about food.

Aspects of Globalisation is intended to serve a varied audience. Being at the forefront of research, it should appeal to academics, researchers and postgraduate students interested in new approaches and ideas for future research. To this end, the editors have encouraged the contributors to pursue varied themes and raise new issues, approach their subject matter in an analytically rigorous way, and to include fairly extended review sections within their papers, so as to make them useful to a wider readership. Furthermore, diverse methodologies are followed, including the widespread use of state-of-the-art econometrics, reflecting the recent trend in economic analysis. Equally importantly, many of the papers offer clear-cut policy conclusions and should therefore be of direct relevance to policy-minded analysts and policy-makers.
We thus hope that the papers included here will provoke further research and ideas as well as contribute to ongoing policy debates. Its diversity, rigour and scope should be positive attributes of the volume and should make it a useful source of information for researchers and policy-makers alike.
