I can't believe I'm the FIRST to review this great resource!.......2005-12-15

For the great majority of car buyers, this is probably THE BEST resource. Unless you're into super-performance or the finer points of car technology, it's probably the only resource you need.

For any car that you want to check, Consumer Reports tells you clearly what type of car it is and who it's for, how reliable it has been, how satisfied its customers have been, and how much it holds its value. There's also info on performance and various routine "specs," definitely enough for 95% of us. If you're an EXTREME car enthusiast, you may be disappointed; this book isn't like the "harder-core" car publications. But Consumer Reports does an excellent job of including what most of us would want to see -- and can UNDERSTAND! After all, much of the material in the "harder-core" publications is Greek to us, right? And actually some of the technical material in this source is also a little tough-going, but not so much that it's intimidating. I think it's just enough to help us stretch our technical knowledge, without turning our brains to mush.

Consumer Reports is renowned for its "reliability" ratings, and indeed this information is probably the most valuable and most distinctive part of what CR does on cars. And in fact, this aspect should be of interest even to the "enthusiasts," because the harder-core car publications don't have anything like it. The reliability ratings are presented in a form that's easy to learn and easy to grasp at a glance. While a good reliability rating doesn't guarantee that a car will be good, it definitely stacks the deck in your favor.

An aspect of the "reliability" system that Consumer Reports doesn't get enough credit for is how excellent are its criteria for defining and determining reliability. Some other organizations (including very well known ones) use criteria that have little to do with what most of us mean by "reliability" -- their surveys focus mainly on "number of complaints," regardless of how significant the complaints are. For example, complaints about rattles, or radio reception, or about wishing the car had more power, get counted as problems and count against the car. (Often those organizations don't use the word reliability but some other term like "quality," but the media and the public usually don't get the distinction.) Consumer Reports focuses on problems more related to the basic functioning of the car, which is what most of us are more concerned about.

Consumer Reports is also renowned for being perhaps the most objective and neutral evaluator of products, free from influence of manufacturers and other interested parties. From what I've ever been able to tell, the reputation is well deserved.

The one quibble that I have with their car ratings is that they seem perhaps to lean a little too much toward practicality and don't show enough appreciation for certain kinds of upgrades. For example, they tend toward the idea that paying extra for a Mercury Mountaineer over a Ford Explorer is a waste, likewise an Acura over a Honda or a Lexus over a Toyota. But once you realize that apparent bias, you can just take it into account in making your own decisions. And besides, there's a lot to be said for practicality.

This is an amazing book that i would definatly recommend to ANYBODY! My teacher had originally told my to read it, telling me it was an irrisistable book! She told me i would love it, and would not be able to put it down. Just as she had said, that is exactly what happend. Many of my classmates also found the book to be the same way. My teacher even ended up buy another copy of Last Sam's Cage, because too many people wanted to read it, but there wasnt enough of it to go around! i ensure you that you will LOVE this book if you ever get around to reading it, and will want to read it over and over. it is truly a book that everyone can enjoy, and will be loved by all for many years to come!

The basic premise makes it sound like an early reader's storybook: a boy, unhappy at home, runs away to live in the zoo.

Last Sam's Cage, however, is anything but a child's flight of fancy. It is, in fact, a realistic, gritty novel for teens. Eddie Slater, fifteen, is the victim of the kind of abuse at home that we know happens all too often. His father has died, and his mother has remarried to someone not so nice. The marriage quickly degenerates into a destructive co-dependent hell, with Eddie caught in the middle. As his life spirals out of control, Eddie finds himself on the street, running with a dangerous crowd and into trouble with the law. The abuse he suffers at his stepfather's hands, meanwhile, escalates to the point where his very life is in danger. Eddie has to escape, if only to save himself.

But to where? Remembering happier times spent at the zoo, Eddie heads in that direction. He soon finds the sprawling, extensive Calgary Zoo to be an ideal escape from it all. Using skills he learned on the street, Eddie evades security and moves right in. He finds a nook, a place to hide at night.

There are problems, of course: Eddie is not exactly on the feeding schedule. He must steal to survive, even to the point of breaking and entering. Then there is Jack, a grown man who hangs around the kids at zoo. Why does Jack seem to want to help? Eddie's natural sense of distrust puts him on guard. Could Jack be some kind of pervert?

Author David A. Poulsen expertly covers all the bases, leaving no loose ends. We learn much more about both Jack and Eddie, and how past experiences can shape a life. The reader is never allowed to lose track of the fact that Eddie is, at heart, a basically good kid. Nor does the author gloss over how Eddie's home life came to be the hell it is. At one point, we watch him confront his mother only to learn just how even adults can mess up their lives. The story's various threads weave together at the end to create a climax rich in drama and suspense.

In all, Last Sam's Cage is a realistic, satisfying novel that holds no punches. This is not Poulsen's first novel dealing with runaways; I found Billy and the Bearman a good read as well.

Great for young adult readers!.......2004-11-22

You'll be captivated from the first page when you read about Eddie sneaking out of the house to run away from his abusive step-dad. Eddie is 15 and now homeless, finding solace in the Calgary Zoo. While there he writes in his journal about his days and you get a great insight into this gentle and confused survivor. He befriends a middle-aged man who ends up saving his life in the end. I won't give the whole thing away but I read it before giving it to my 12 year old son and he read it in two days and loved it! Any book that can captivate a 12 year boy is a winner in my opinion. We're off to get more of David Poulsen's books and Last Sam's Cage is definately on a few of my Christmas lists to buy.

This book opens our eyes. Sure, we feel that we know what we should be doing. Many times we are right in our hunches. Yet, we still do not always do what needs to be done. Instead, out of either laziness or taking the easy road, we fail because it is so easy to do so. Besides, the customer will always walk in the door. Right? As this book reminds us, the customer may never be back. It is in the insight of a professioanl like Tasca that we are reminded of wehat we may already know. Again, our implementation of these rules which he explains simply, we will achieve. Another book I encourage is "Cars and People: How to Put the Two Together."

After the owner of our store read the book all employees read it . Then the owner flew to meet Mr Tasca at his store ,he spent 3 days there, wa sgiven the tour of his store, he spent quite a bit of time meeting with Mr Tasca and his sons talking about his philosophy and way of doing business .What a place !! upon returning we have instatuted The same 7 day return policy that Mr Tasca has as well as putting 3month 3000 mile waranties on our cars.it took some faith in our selves and our business to go all the way but we have and we have not regreted it one bit,, Great Book

How to sell with integrity and without lowering your price.......1999-09-08

This book, through anecdote and exposition, tells the reader flat-out how to sell, without violating integrity. It covers why the "lowest price" game is one you can not win. It tells what the customer really wants. While it discusses these topics in relation to selling cars, it explains how these ideas can be used in other industries.

When I first saw this book, I picked it up because the name was familiar, since I used to live in southeastern Massachusetts, and I wondered what Bob Tasca had to say. Now I know, and I feel that I got good value from the book. And that's his point, in part. But it's -his- book, so let -him- say it to you.

Bob does a great job of showing his winning formula to build a successful dealership. Although any business person can learn from his book, it's a must read for dealership managers. I have recommended it to my dealership clients.

Bob Tasca puts into a concisely written, punchy and readable book the secrets to his success. He explains why you cannot focus on both the bottom line and customer satisfaction, which explains why most businesses fail at achieving real customer satisfaction. You don't have to be a car dealer to get a lot from this book.
