This book is a great resource on many, many applications of Systems Thinking" using the 50+ years of scientific research by the Society of General Systems Research--which is what makes it stand out from other books on Systems Thinking that have no research base.

These tools make it easy for someone to pick up the book, look at the Tools List and select the one you need right now. Thus, you do not have to read the entire book to find it extremely useful. It is a must to have in the Library of every executive, planner, trainer, OD professional and project management expert.

I finally get what people mean when they say the "whole" picture........2007-09-21

Considering that systems theory is not one of my favorite subjects, I was hesitant to read this book when my daughter recommended it. However, after briefly skimming through the prologue, I found the author to be very honest and easy to understand in his concepts. I am not much of a reader, especially on "how to" types of books, but I have found that Haines' concept of working backwards is quite useful and simple. The whole "H" or "helicopter" analogy as he likes to call it is very easy for me to understand. Being a visual learner, I finally get what people mean when they say the "whole" picture. I have yet to put his advice into practice, but if anything, I enjoyed his examples and how easy it has been for me to read this huge paperback. The first 100 or so pages are the essence or the key, so you could definitely just read those and still put the concepts to practice.

"Simplicity in Thinking" is the best way to describe this book. The subject of Systems Thinking is explained in a thorough yet simple manner. There are a lot of visuals in the book which give clear examples of the concepts. Overall, the concepts in this book have provided me with numerous ways to dramatically improve my management skills in a minimal amount of time.

This volume is the status report of the international community of practitioners of x-ray microscopy. It contains the reviews and work presented at the 6th International Conference on X-Ray Microscopy held in Berkeley, 2-6 August 1999. The techniques are being applied to biological imaging where, for example, special labeling can reveal the location of specific proteins in cells, while cryogenic sample handling prevents x-ray damage to cells. These techniques can also be used to analyze objects on a 10 nm size scale, allowing the study of their physical and chemical state. For example, chemical processes in the environment can be examined on the surfaces of microscopic particulate matter. The availability of several new soft x-ray synchrotron light sources around the world is facilitating the development of new applications. This conference showed that large new programs have become productive at these new synchrotron sources.

Carp on the fly is among the best how to books I have read. I burned through it in two sittings and really want to go hunt carp on the fly. I love its no nonsense approach to target this species a very easy and fun read.

I love the way the book is organized. It's very easy to follow. This book got me pumped up to go do some carp fishing on the fly rod. The carp is the closest thing I can get to a bonefish living in MN. If you want to have a blast catching fish that are huge and probably very close to where you live, this book has everything you need for fly carping.

I can finally come out of the closet! Yes, I fish for Carp. Initially with bait but now with a fly rod. This book is a super introduction to the freshwater Bonefish. Carpfishing on the Fly has all you need to get started. Whether it's tackle, tactics or fly patterns you're looking for it's in this book. Of course, there is a great section on why to fish for carp as well as sections on the life cycle and biology of the Golden Salmon. Chances are good you'll find carp near where you live. This book is great for any carp angler even if you don't fly fish. It talks about in debth the behavore of a feeding and non feeding carp. I give it 15 thumbs up

Not 'The Dream Songs', but still worthwhile.......1999-12-15

I was a little confused by what Berryman was trying to do in this book. Like "Love and Fame," "Carp on the Fly" shows a different Berryman from the one we meet in "The Dream Songs." Here the emphasis seems to be on man's relationship with nature, both outer and inner, and the predatory nature of our connections with that larger world. The use of fish imagery also, perhaps, suggests the pre-birth, womb-nestled state which haunts Berryman's work and, I imagine, haunted his life as well -- in the anti-poetic society in which he lived, he was truly a fish out of water. Berryman's complicated attitude toward Christianity is reflected in the image of the fisherman, whose bright hooks draw fish upwards toward the surface, where they meet a kind of death that is also a transcendence, a shudder of pure, mortal joy.

Companion to Narnia, revised and expanded.......2007-01-28

While reading the Chronicles of Narnia, I needed help with many of the descriptions used by Mr. lewis. I was able to use Mr. Fords book for all the explantions I needed. He makes it easy to then understand all the books. I really liked the illustrations shown in his book and really liked the maps showing Narnia, Aslan's country and all the other countries there. Mr. Ford also gives us a personal look into how he has shared the Chronicles with his children and grandchildren. I liked reading his thoughts and ideas about the books. I found his book, Companion to Narnia very helpful and lovely to read. I hope this helps others when deciding to buy a companion book to the Chronicles. I totally recommend this one.

Companion leaves you lonely.......2006-03-06

The Companion book is quite a good read if you are an adult. Narnia was written for kids, I bought the Narnia books for my kids and for me. The Companion to Narnia was really written for adults so was not much use to my kids (even the older one). The book does note in the introduction that it is meant for readers who have already read Narnia and are reading it again.

Declining participation in labor unions, the movement toward a service-based economy, and increased globalization have cast doubt on the extent to which welfare states can continue to stem inequality in market economies over the long-term. Does the new economy render existing models of social assistance obsolete? Do traditional welfare states hamper economic and employment growth, thereby worsening the plight of the poor? Lane Kenworthy offers a rigorous empirical analysis of these questions in "Egalitarian Capitalism." The book examines 16 industrialized countries in North America, Western Europe, and Scandinavia—each with different approaches to assisting the poor—to see how successful each has been in developing its economy and curbing inequality over the past twenty years.

Kenworthy finds that inequality grew in almost all of these countries, from the most progressive to the least. Using simple but powerful statistical tests, he assesses the theory that inequality is necessary to improve economic growth and reduce poverty. He finds no necessary trade-off between equality and economic growth but discovers some evidence that high minimum wages dampen employment growth in private sector services. Kenworthy suggests that without greater private sector employment, public supports may be unable to adequately sustain living standards for the poor. An equitable growth strategy necessitates a balance of policy options: Creating jobs is aided by loose employment regulation, low payroll taxes, and, in some cases, lower real wages for workers at the bottom of the income spectrum. However, high employment is also facilitated by a system that "makes work pay" with earnings subsidies, workplace flexibilities, financial support for those who are between jobs or unable to work, and universal health and child care coverage. Kenworthy suggests that these strategies, though generally presented as mutually exclusive, could be effectively combined to create a robust, fair economy.

This is basically a "how to" Q and A book resembling what might be a FAQ sheet about Vietnam. As a result it is rather disorganized and has little in the way of analysis or opinion. Theoretically, the book covers most of the legal, financial and bureaucratic hurdles one might encounter while doing business in Vietnam. Unfortunately, theory and reality have yet to meet in Vietnam.
