Book Description

The volume contains selected papers by the celebrated astronomer Victor A. Ambartsumian, many of which are being published for the first time in English translation. The first section contains papers relating to nebulae, including his simple formulation of Zanstra's methods for determining the temperature of the central stair illuminating a planetary nebula, which led to the first treatment of the radiative equilibrium of a planetary nebula. Section II contains Ambartsumian's papers on Stellar dynamics, where he stresses the importance of the statistics of binary stars for the time scale of the universe, whilst Section III contains his work on radiative transfer, including two papers in which he formulates his principles of invariance in the theory of radiative transfer. Section IV relates to interstellar absorption, and includes articles on the fluctuations of brightness of our Galaxy, formulated in terms of the principle of invariance, and the astronomical consequences of this principle in stellar statistics.

Catch fish in the boundary waters.......2007-09-24

A Boundary Waters Fishing Guide was the only book I chose to portage in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota and it guided me to the best lakes and streams and told me what fish types are best in the locations I was traversing and how to catch them. While I am a fishing novice, this book provides location-specific information even pros will appreciate. Only available used I believe.

BWCA Fishing Guide-M. Furtman a must read for the BWCA fisherman!.......2007-03-19

This is an excellent book, with lots of great tips for the novice and perhaps the expert. There are techniques that are very specific for the BWCA and the species of fish, time of year, etc. Michael Furtman goes into good detail of all fish found in the boundary water. He also discusses how and when to catch them.

If you love fishing and are heading to the BWCA, I would recommend bring this book with you!

A bit advanced for a newbie, but very useful.......2006-04-18

Let me first say that this is one fantastic reference book. It's almost worth the purchase price just for the lake data at the back, which includes among other things the species that inhabit almost every fishable lake in the BWCA and Quetico. The book has some occasionally confusing illustrations of underwater land formations, as well as diagrams of how to fillet the fish you catch. Furtman clearly knows his stuff.

I read through the whole text as a canoe guide who didn't know much about fishing and who had never even cleaned a fish. I still haven't filleted my own catch, but I feel confident I could do it if the situation called for it. As a tenderfoot fisherman, I had to read and re-read the book to absorb all of the valuable details, and I am going to purchase my own copy to bring on trail as a reference this summer. Like I said, the lake data, combined with the best lure types for each species, is worth the purchase price and will improve your results 100%.

Classic and still essential..........2006-02-12

Michael Furtman nails it on the head for the newbs to Northwoods fishing to those fishing outside their normal quary. This is a must have, as it will provide you with the essentials for tackling the majority of fish you will find in the Boundary Waters. It's even small enough to take with you and read on the spot. As if you'll have time to read.

Good resource, very comprehensive.......2002-08-15

This book was perfect and covered information on all major fish species and every lake in the Boundary Waters. It was a little confusing in some parts (ie some of the lure and fishing technique terminology was beyond me - a beginner), but it was a very useful resource.

I first looked up one word (in English) then three, then ten. I did not find one single word of the ten, all part of everyday conversational English. I closed the book for good. I recommend that you do not waste your money on this dictionary.

Has all the features you could want for those learning the language. It is a little lacking, in that it doesn't have more obscure words in the dictionary. The phrase-book and lists are useful.

No more "Mr. Mom".......2004-12-06

While the day-to-day, 9-to-5 (only it's sometimes more like 24/7) career of child-rearing is still largely a female domain, Mr. Mom is no longer a movie cliche, but an SAHD, or Stay-at-Home Dad. As more mothers bring home larger pay checks, and more paying jobs can be done at home, more fathers find themselves able and willing to do the daycare thing. Thus the rise of dads like Peter Baylies, founder of the At-Home Dad Network and publisher of its newsletter, and thus this very useful and pragmatic guide for "Men Who Clean Bathrooms and the Women Who Love Them."

The Stay-at-Home Dad Handbook would be an excellent tool for any expectant parent, male or female, who wants to look after both home and children. Baylies is full of clear and clever advice about establishing routines, cleaning house (and how to schedule this around the needs of a small child), dealing with tantrums, attaining and maintaining a satisfying social life, living on one income, working at home, avoiding burnout, and what to do when the kid hits kindergarten age. Some of this stuff men simply need explained to them, and Baylies does that with admirable precision, flavored with amusing examples of traditional can-do male attitude - there's a really good idea about how to recycle your old computer and edutain your child at the same time - and tips only a dad would think of, or publish. (Having fun in the summer months via the "ice cube meltdown in armpit" method comes to mind.) But the book's guy-ness comes through most strongly in the "Spotlight on Dad" profiles that finish each chapter: vignettes, some funny and some poignant, by other SAHDs about their at-home experiences: the frustration of waiting and waiting, a squalling infant in one's arms, for the breast-feeding mom who's stuck on the freeway; the guy who's finally taken the proud step of calling himself "a professional parent." ("And if you call me Mr. Mom, I'll hit you with my diaper bag.")

It would be nice to hear a little more about the less tangible rewards of staying at home: the ease and intimacy of life with one's child, the pleasures of not commuting and of being one's own boss. This is "THE BOOK" on stay at home dads! Fun and fast reading that offers valuable insight into the life of stay at home dads. Great parenting tips for both mom's and dad's. Read this book and you will be a better father. This book is a must read for any parent who takes parenting seriously.

As a recently back to work mom, I found this book to be incredibly helpful both for me and for my at-home dad husband. The chapter about how to deal with the "rush hour" time before dinner offers some great tips. I definately recommend this book to new moms and dads!

Cooper is the guy if you are into development - from idea to delivery of the goods - be it a product (widget), software or services. He is a portfolio management guy that will help you wrap your thinking around making investments into ideas that are yearning to make a debut in reality.

Good, Practical Book But Repetitive.......2000-06-30

This is a very good book for managers of new service development processes. It offers a framework for designing and implementing a new service development process and there are many good advice and techniques in the book that I believe will prove invaluable to these managers. I expect this is the result of the 1,500 case studies that the authors have conducted.

I especially liked the sections that the authors have entitled "Points for Management to Ponder". These short bits, interspersed throughout the book, forces a reader to link the theories to actual situations in a company. I found such exercises beneficial to the learning process.

However, I found that the authors tend to repeat themselves throughout the book. For example, Chapter 4 and 5 are essentially the same. Chapter 4 walks through the framework fairly quickly with a real case example while Chapter 5 examines the general framework in detail. I believe the 2 chapters could have been combined without much loss to content.

I recommend this book to practitioners, as this is a very practical book. For readers who just want to know more about service development but are currently not involved in any development work, this book is not for you. Like me, you may find some of the framework difficult to understand without a real case to relate to.

Lessons from the master.......2000-06-24

Well written and full of understandings... Bob, as with all his books, has made many key points. An excellent read for anyone who's business is dependent on new services and believes that luck is not a sustainable advantage. If you believe that the event or experience marketing is the key to most sales, then becoming excellent in launching new services is a must.

The creation of the EMU and the introduction of the Euro is a historic event for the EU countries. The debates on the desirability of the EMU provoked a vast economic literature dealing with the theory of the optimum currency area, costs and benefits of the EMU, symmetric versus asymmetric shocks, alternative mechanisms of adjustment in a monetary union and so forth. Until recently, for the Central European candidate countries for a full membership in the EU, these issues seemed to be too far away, as they concentrated on devising their own monetary and exchange rate systems suitable for their transition period. The challenges of the EMU for the Central European countries have scarcely been dealt with in both Western and Eastern economic literature.
Inclusion of Central European Countries in the European Monetary Union aims to fill this gap, by focusing on the most direct issue of relevance for the Central European countries with respect to the EMU - why, how and when these countries are expected to join the EMU. The papers included in this volume study the relationship between the EU accession process of the Central European candidate countries and their involvement in the process of European monetary integration. The book focuses on two main issues. First, are these countries - now or possibly later - a part of the European optimum currency area so that they should belong to the Euro area in the near future? Second, if so, how and when should they undertake necessary adjustments in their monetary and exchange rate policies and join the ERM 2 and the EMU?
