Book Description
An equilibrium theory of unemployment assumes that firms and workers maximize their payoffs under rational expectations and that wages are determined to exploit the private gains from trade. This book focuses on the modeling of the transitions in and out of unemployment, given the stochastic processes that break up jobs and lead to the formation of new jobs, and on the implications of this approach for macroeconomic equilibrium and for the efficiency of the labor market.
This approach to labor market equilibrium and unemployment has been successful in explaining the determinants of the "natural" rate of unemployment and new data on job and worker flows, in modeling the labor market in equilibrium business cycle and growth models, and in analyzing welfare policy. The second edition contains two new chapters, one on endogenous job destruction and one on search on the job and job-to-job quitting. The rest of the book has been extensively rewritten and, in several cases, simplified.
Customer Reviews:
An important and influential book in labor economics.......2005-07-18
The book is written by one of the pioneers of matching theory approach to unemployment theory. The book starts with very simple matching models and builds its way up by adding something at each chapter. So the book starts by a deterministic model of equilibrium with only labor as input. you see that first capital is added to the model, then dynamics of the model are discussed and balanced paths are derived. Then random elements and shocks are added, then heterogeneity among workers is considered and then search efforts and other elements are being added.
I think the book is very well written and the flow of topics and ideas is smooth and easy to grasp. Verbal discussion and explanations are clear, informative and are always accompanied by the proper formulas and derivations. Note that the book covers only matching models of labor and completely ignores other types of models (like efficiency wage, implicit contracts, ...). Also chapters don't have exercises at the end, which I don't think is a major handicap for the book, as it is more meant for graduate level research.
In general I think this book makes understanding the matching theory easy and anybody who wants to work on labor economics should know about this book.

Book Description
Until recently, the ostrich was a relatively uncommon agricultural animal in many parts of the world, even in South Africa where it was domesticated only a little over a century ago. Recently, however, ostrich farming has grown much more popular because of its healthy meat, and production of slaughter ostriches is now a reality in many parts of the world. This book is the first wide-ranging volume to address this phenomenon and review the current scientific literature on ostrich biology, production, and health. It is written by leading authors from Europe, the United States, Israel, and South Africa, and its topics range from the anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology of the ostrich to diseases and veterinary care. The Ostrich is a necessity for avian and poultry scientists and an ideal reference for all those intrigued by the growing interest in ostrich farming.
Customer Reviews:
Not Helpful at All.......2006-03-24
This was the most useless book I've ever bought. It had no real information about Ostriches that could be used by anyone interested in them. It was basically a survey of how Ostriches were raised around the world, but with no information on which techniques were good or bad, and nothing on what worked well or not. Anyone truly interested in knowing about how to raise ostriches appropriately would better invest their money and time to visit an ostrich breeding/raising farm and ask the farmer yourself. This book was a waste of money and time.

Customer Reviews:
Valuable information.......2000-11-10
This book contains valuable information organized in a manner more suitable to an overview of various topics within the subject area rather than a ready reference format. In that regard, the Preface provides overviews of the subject coverage for each chapter in addition to a detailed Table of Contents. The book is indexed in detail and allows the user to search toxicant to organism and from organism to toxicant, however, it does not work as well going from organism to toxicant. The index uses general terms such as fish, sea creatures, and algae, and, therefore, the user can not look up a specific species in the index. For example, if users wanted to know the accumulation of "tetramethyl lead in rainbow trout" [table 2.3], they would have to look up "tetramethyl lead, accumulation of" in the index and not "fish" or "trout." The specificity of the information in the book varies considerably from table to table whether it is covering species by species, "organisms other than fish" [table 5.7] or taxonomic classes of "creatures other than fish," [table 8.13]. Additional topics included in the five appendices are: ranges of metal concentrations in water; radionuclides in fresh and sea waters; sediment composition; toxicants in sea organisms; and potable water composition.
Although thoroughly referenced, there are errors in the reference lists of this book. The format used by this book [author, title, volume, beginning page, and year] is less forgiving than some others when attempting to decipher partial or partially incorrect citations. This is further complicated by the fact that many of the sources are 25 or more years old leaving the user less options for searching electronic resources (with their more sophisticated field combinations) and more time culling through paper. It is difficult to expound on errors in this brief review. The variety of types of errors in the citations in this book include: incorrect spellings within primary and secondary author's names, omission of authors, incorrect volumes, incorrect journal titles, and inconsistency in format (most journal titles spelled out in full, but some journal titles abbreviated). In this reviewer's opinion, many errors look as though they are attributable to 'cut and paste' carelessness or optical character recognition software (OCR) limitations. This lapse in editing and proofreading casts doubt upon the reliability of the editing, proofreading, and information found in this book. This title is cautiously recommended for academic libraries.

Customer Reviews:
The Essential Wilderness Navigator.......2007-10-09
The relaxed, conversational pace of this book may appeal to some readers. It strikes me otherwise, and feels wordy, and in places little more than fluff. If the writing were tighter, the details would stand out better. Those details are there and worth getting. It is a good introduction in that sense. For some readers this may be enough. If you are inclined to read more than one book on any subject you're interested in, then this may be helpful as one of the first books on navigation you might read. But it is unlikely it'd be your last.
Very informitive.......2007-08-19
Great book. Read it before I went on a backpacking trip to Colorado. It taught me a lot about map reading, how to use a compass, and also how to be more aware of my surroundings. I would suggest this book to anyone who backpacks or does day trips.
Good Book.......2007-05-13
This is a excellent book if you do not have a knowledge of the wilderness. I would recommend it highly
Difficult to get lost with this one..........2005-09-05
An excellent book for those starting out on orienteering. Very good conversational wording. Doesn't use too much jargon. The practical exercises are easily understood. The combination of the written word and neat diagrams and pictures make the information easily digestable.
Excellent Map and Compass Instruction Book.......2004-12-04
You want to learn how to use a map and compass? For hiking or backpacking, especially remote wilderness? This is the best comprehensive book I've found on the subject, bar none. Reasons:
1. It gets to the point quickly in teaching you map & compass fundamentals. No fluff, no wasted time on esoteric principles of magnetism or the rules of orienteering competitions (a fine sport, but one bearing little resemblance to actual wilderness navigation with its special large-scale magnetic-north maps and simplified compasses etc.) Instead, this book concentrates on one objective: accurate land navigation in a wilderness environment.
2. It teaches realistic methods, and does not emphasize the unrealistic ones (one glaring example: penciling a lot of inaccurate magnetic declination lines all over your map the night before your trip (because the author used the method once for an adventure race with a special large-scale map and thinks it's cool) instead of just buying a compass with adjustable declination or pasting a pointer indicating a true bearing on your compass baseplate! Hey, sitting atop a windblown mountain is no place to attempt to draw magnetic lines of declination with a three-inch compass baseplate when you walk off your pre-marked map or have to use a friend's copy!
3. It has large, clear, easy-to-follow illustrations. Believe me, this is a rarity in most map/compass books.
4. It teaches BOTH compass dead reckoning (compass only) AND terrain association (map priority) navigation principles and shows the advantages and weaknesses of each in a given situation. Some orienteering-biased books would have you believe the compass is only good for aligning a map to magnetic north!
5. It has nice large pages and lies flat while you refer to various sections and practice using your map & compass in the field. Don't laugh. Remember, you will learn land navigation by practicing outdoors what you're reading. One session of trying to refer to the tiny pocket paperback pages and dingy photos of competing books will make you a believer in a large-paged instruction book with clear illustrations.
6. It covers more advanced map/compass skills (resection, finding position from a baseline and landmark, etc.) as well as beginner exercises, and does so in the same clear, practical way without excessive verbiage or attempts to be clever. One competing book spent 3 entire pages on how to use a 1902 compass design!
7. It warns you of the great inaccuracies of some improvised 'navigational' methods (like telling directions from a wristwatch and the sun) while still giving you useful information on finding direction from Polaris and other methods that do work well enough for emergency navigation.
8. While it has the mandatory chapter on GPS and the development of computer-generated waypoints, it does not attempt to be a 'all-method navigation' book. Such a book does not exist. Either the GPS material will be inadequate (because no general GPS book can cover each model of GPS and their widely varying operational characteristics in different outdoor environments) or the map/compass material is too abbreviated. Learn to use a map & compass before all else - this book makes it simple.
Book Description
With this guide you will learn the basic steps that will help you to easily and confidently navigate through the wilds with or without a compass, with or without a map, and then will all the tools together.
Customer Reviews:
He knows navigation, and how to teach it.......2004-10-20
I know little about navigation, but I can tell when someone is knowledgable or not. And Hodgson is not only adept at navigating, he is equally competent at teaching these skills to others. I found that many of his tricks and tips are easily applied to many circumstances. In fact the only fault that I have with this book is that I was expecting the compass included in the book to be a capable as a backup, which it is not. Other than that, I believe that the book is very helpful and unless you are an expert navigator you should be able to find some usefulness.
reads in one sitting, wanting to go out hiking!!.......1999-03-22
I've read the book in one sitting, turning maps and terrain over and over in my head. The author makes the information clear and concise. It is clear that he is an experienced hiker in all kinds of terrains and conditions: desert and winter environments. It (the book) is a no-nonsense what you need to know instruction set. If you need to know how to use, or even what to buy in a compass, then this is the book that puts it down on paper in a way that you remember when you are out on the trail.
Good concise discussion on land navigation.......1997-10-10
Well written, well illustrated guide to general land navigation. Also teaches how-to navigate without a compass. Book includes a compass-on-a-card that can be carried in a wallet and used for survival situations. Excellent for beginners and intermmediate navigators. I liked the graphic illustrations and the illustrations of how to use a map with a compass.
The only negative I found was the lack of mention that the magnetic declination changes each year. If you have an old map, the declination value can be off significantly.

Great litte notecards.......2007-01-06
I like Ina Garten's recipes so I thought these little notecards would be cute to send to all my food-loving friends and family. There were 4 different soup recipes with a nice picture of the meal on the front of each card. The recipes were all good - esp. the chicken chili!
Fun and useful!.......2004-06-25
With the prevalence of email, the handwritten note is becoming a luxury... something we love to receive, but rarely have the time to send out. Taking that time means more now than ever, and your friends will be thrilled to receive such a fun and useful card. I've made each of the recipes in these cards, and they're all wonderful. My favorite is the fennel soup gratin, it's absolutely sumptuous. Most of the friends I've sent one of these cards to called or emailed shortly thereafter, raving about the recipe. One even invited me over to share. :) They're just a very fun way to keep in touch.
Book Description
Many people did not grow up in a Christian home, and many more do not consider their childhood experience a good model. Robert Wolgemuth presents this inspiring, practical book for people who want to have a Christian home.
So, what's so great about a Christian home? There's redemption. There's forgiveness. There's hope. Laughter and genuine happiness. There's discipline and purpose there. And there's grace . . . lots of grace.
The Most Important Place on Earth covers eight answers to the question "What does a Christian home look like?" It's filled with stories and practical ideas that will convince any reader that a Christian home is not an elusive stereotype. It's something that really can be achieved. And it's something worth having. You'll see.
Customer Reviews:
A must read.......2007-05-18
Raising our children in a Christian home is an important part of our responsibilities as parents. However, sometimes it is difficult to know where to begin, especially when you might not have been raised in a Christian home yourself. Robert Wolgemuth lays out simple definitions, principles and ideas to help you be intentional and successful in creating a healthy, God-centered environment for your family.
One thing I love about Robert's style is that he is not sharing the "10 Principles for creating a Christian Home" or "How to Create a Christian Home in 3 Easy Steps." He shares key values - like the power of words and the importance of laugher - and then he shares practical ideas that have worked for him. He gives you some vital components of a Christian home and a starting point for implementing ideas that work for your family.
As we build our Christian home, we develop not only a ministry to our children, but to everyone who visits our home. As Robert notes, "God is exactly what a Christian home should smell like. The moment folks walk through the front door, there should be something - although completely invisible - that reminds them of the God of the universe. And when your kids show up at work or school, there shodl be a trace of secondhand smell that others can quickly detect."
As parents, we cannot leave the responsibility of the spiritual development of our children to the children's or youth ministry at church. We must begin at home. The Most Important Place on Earth is a great resource in helping us to do just that.
The Most Important Place on Earth.......2007-01-17
This book is an absolute must for any Christian home. I love it!
I'll read this again..........2007-01-12
I loved this book, so much that I'm buying it for gifts! Written with the traditional family in mind, Robert Wolgumuth uses honest, personal examples & stories from his own life to illustrate much needed do's and don't's for successful family relationships. Along with the Biblical references and explanations, this book is a "must own" encouragement for every family. Reading it was like talking with a friend. I was deeply moved.
Uplifting, encouraging and challenging - great read........2006-06-26
An absolutely outstanding read - very uplifting, very challenging. Author of She Calls Me Daddy!, Wolgemuth explores the various unique elements that make a Christian home different than just any other home. While the book has many practical suggestions that Wolgemuth shares from his own experience (good and bad), the primary emphasis of this book is to get the reader to feel, not think, about the importance of the Christian home. Wolgemuth begins with the smell of a Christian home - the aroma that brings back memories of family, food and fellowship within the home. He talks about the words that are used in the home - how they need to be encouraging, loving and tender. And he talks about the home being a safe place, one where children feel like they can be themselves, even if that isn't always perfect.
Wolgemuth probably says in the book a dozen times that he's "old school," and he is. He believes that the family ought to sit down for dinner together, he believes that electronic devices (TV, video games, etc) disrupt family conversation time and result in disconnected children, and he believes that the parents should view themselves as the "priests" of their home. I guess I would have to say that I'm "old school" as well and wish that more people would be!
Wolgemuth is also very honest about his own learning curve as a parent and gives numerous examples of where he blew it as a dad and a husband. The book is an excellent read - slows down a little in the final couple of chapters, but still one of the best books I've read on the importance of the home and the family...especially in our culture today!
A book rich with motivating encouragement for the home.......2006-06-04
I am only halfway through this book, not because it is a tough read, but because everytime I pick it up, I read something that calls me to get up and go do something. This book is so rich (the best word I can use to describe it). The author, Robert Wolgemuth, uses a very casual tone and talks about what works to build a Christian home in everyway. It really is motivating and it gives good reminders and habits to practice everyday. I would recommend this to new parents, old parents, and basically anyone who comes in contact with children who want to be of Christian influence. Wonderful! I will try to read it every year.
