Book Description

'Today, Fair Trade finds itself at a crucial point in its evolution from alternative trading mechanism to a mainstream economic model. As the only certifier in the largest Fair Trade market in the world, TransFair USA has observed the explosive growth in consumer awareness and business interest in Fair Trade certification. New research into the progress of Fair Trade to date and, crucially, its key future directions is urgently needed. Fair Trade is therefore a valuable and timely contribution. The range and depth of the book is considerable. It is international in outlook and engages with a broad spectrum of theory and thinking. Its style is approachable yet rigorous. I would strongly recommend it to industry, academics, students, policy-makers and the interested reader in general'

- Paul Rice, CEO, TransFair USA

'This work - a powerful study of the maelstrom of issues and cross currents in the Fair Trade and Development movements is long overdue. Through case studies, quantative analysis and reasoned arguement, this work makes its case with cogent force'

- Hamish Renton, Product Manager Food You Can Trust, Tesco

'With the fair trade sector growing rapidly, it is vital that the concept is understood properly and the future potential mapped out. Fair Trade provides a comprehensive guide to all aspects of fair trade which make it a "must read" for everyone from casual buyer right through to seasoned producer. Here's your chance to see how you can easily change the world for the better'

- Mel Young, editor-in-chief, New Consumer, Britain's only fair trade magazine, www.newconsumer.org.

5 out of 5 stars The (dated) Fair Trade Bible.......2007-07-27

I've used this book dozens of times as a reference to speeches I've given at a Fair Trade shop to educate customers. In and around the year 2004, it was the Fair Trade Bible. Well researched, all-inclusive and not overly academic (with one exception being the chapter on Marketing - maybe I just have to brush up on my Marketing knowledge).

Now, most of the conclusions that were drawn from the book may still be valid but the statistics need massive updating. Perhaps new conclusions depending upon the updated statistics.

One huge draw back is the book is so expensive for nothing more than a paper back. I've only had it for about a month and the cover is already starting to curl.

But again, if you want Fair Trade 101, look no further. If you wish to become an expert, there is no book that can do that, but this is a solid first step.

    -- CLASSIFICATION --

Type Indicator: the Myers-Briggs provides type codes, i.e., ENFP, INTJ, INFJ, etc. Emphasis is on understanding the characteristics of the 16 different types. Types are seen as stable and non-changing. Trait Measure: Insight provides relative strength of behavior tendencies on four traits. The interpretation emphasizes the strength of each individual trait and what environments a behavior is displayed in. Traits are viewed as relatively enduring yet flexible and changeable based on environmental influences.

    -- RESULTS --

The 16 Type classifications based on extremes of four opposite indices:
    introversion-extroversion

The sixteen types: ISTJ, ISFJ, INFJ, INTJ, ISTP, ISFP, INFP, INTP, ESTP, ESFP, ENTP, ESTJ, ESFJ, ENFJ, ENTJ Two profiles, work style and personal style, are produced reflecting the interaction of the four personality traits and influences in each of the two environments. The four traits:
getting your way (direct or indirect)
responding to people (outgoing or reserved)
    pacing activity (steady or urgent)
dealing with details (unstructured or precise)

            Book Description

The last 25 years have seen a tremendous growth in the application of statistical and modelling techniques to ecological problems. This expansion has been accelerated by the increasing availability of software, books and computing power. However, the suitability of some of these approaches to data analysis, in a relatively knowledge-poor discipline such as ecology, can be questioned on grounds of appropriateness and robustness. One reason for these concerns is that many ecological problems are at best poorly defined and most lack algorithmic solutions. Machine learning methods offer the potential for a different approach to these difficult problems.
One definition of machine learning is that it is concerned with inducing knowledge from data, where the data could be patterns in a game of chess or patterns in the species composition of natural communities. Unfortunately ecologists have little experience of these relatively recent and novel approaches to understanding data. This is a problem that is made more complex because there is no simple taxonomy of machine learning methods and there are relatively few examples in the mainstream ecological literature to encourage exploration.
This is the first text aimed at introducing machine learning methods to a readership of professional ecologists. All but one of the chapters have been written by ecologists and biologists who highlight the application of a particular method to a particular class of problem. Examples include the identification of species, optimal mate choice, predicting species distributions and modelling landscape features. A group of experienced machine learning workers, who have become interested in environmental problems, have written a chapter that demonstrates how machine learning methods can be used to discover equations that describe the dynamic behaviour of ecological systems. The final chapter reviews `real learning', offering the potential for greater dialogue between the biological and machine learning communities.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Place To Start.......2005-10-25

There are a lot of turnovers in the publishing business and therefore it is unwise to trust this book to be completely accurate. It just takes too long for it to go from research to the book store shelf for all the entries to correct. However, it is still a great place to start your search for a publisher of your creative work. Another great place is the BOOK STORE. Find the books you like, flip them over, write down the publisher, and look them up online.

I am an illustrator and am disappointed with the focus on writing and creative writing ideas/outlets. This is a fact of life for me and other illustrators with books like this however. There are many more middle-aged Moms out there that want to publish there great new idea for a book than there are emerging illustrators. And there are way too many of all of us alltogether - the competition is tough. If you use this book, use it as initial research and then start your own database.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need.......2005-10-01

If you're writing or illustrating a children's book, this is your bible. It has everything you need to know to complete the process.
Helpful listings of markets and plenty of useful advice for beginning and established writers.

5 out of 5 stars Essential market guide for writers and illustrators.......2004-09-29

This review is excerpted from a longer review on my web site, The Purple Crayon.

This is essentially an inexpensive annual "yellow pages" of children's publishing for authors and illustrators in the United States, an alternative to much more expensive and harder-to-use tomes such as Literary Market Place. This year's edition is, as usual, an extremely useful book for a children's book writer or illustrator.

Contents: Most of CWIM is taken up by the Markets section, which includes listings of publishers of books, magazines, greeting cards/puzzles/games, and plays, with a special sub-category for young writers and illustrators. The Book Publishers part is over 100 pages long, with about 200 entries, a little longer than last year. Listings as usual range from a few lines to a half page, and include such information as as the publisher's address, names and titles of editors and art directors, a brief description of their publishing program, sample titles, how to approach them, standard contract terms, and tips (direct quotes from the publisher's staff.) The Magazines part of this section is also pretty substantial, at about 40 pages long.

Before the Markets section come a variety of articles, of which the first four--"Just Starting?", "How to Use This Book," "Before Your First Sale," and "Running Your Business"-cover the same ground every year. Twelve additional articles are new to this edition. I particularly liked "Critique Group Disfunction and What to Do About It," and "The Pitch," which provides helpful guidance in crafting query letters and the like. But there are also articles for illustrators, and on marketing, and even on niche markets (the puzzle market and writing licensed product). Following these articles come lengthy interviews with Newbery winner Jerry Spinelli and the quirky illustrator J. otto Seibold, and a very interesting "First Books" feature, which focuses on first books published by independent publishers.

After the Markets section come a variety of materials in the Resources: listings of agents and art reps; 3 more "insider" pieces; organizations, conferences, and workshops; book, magazine, and web resources; a glossary; and a useful index to the publisher listings, which enables you to find publishers by age level or subject.

The length of the book is listed as being 442 pages, making it 10% longer than last year. The publishers claim over 700 updated listings, which by my reckoning means just about every listing has been updated, and over 100 new ones (the back cover states there are a total of 740 listings of book and magazine publishers, agents, and art reps).

Comments: CWIM continues to be the leading market guide for children's writers and illustrators with the 2005 edition. I like the feature articles, but the meat of CWIM comes in the listings, which get significantly updated every year. Yes, you could gather much of the information you'll find in it on your own, through diligent searches online, phone calls, and guideline and catalog requests to publishers. But the time spent doing that is time lost from your real work.

So how good is the Markets section? I've checked through the listings of book publishers, conferences, and agents, which are the areas I am best qualified to judge, and I found very little that did not seem to me to be both accurate and up-to-date. This year's edition, incidentally, came out in August, two months or more earlier than its usual release date in October or November. Listings are up-to-date, so far as I can tell, through April of 2004.

Children's book writers and illustrators need this, and should strongly consider buying a new edition every year--or at least when your scribbled-in updates are getting out of hand.

              Book Description

The title of this anthology riffs on Teddy Roosevelt's phallocentric motto, "Speak softly, and carry a big stick." Few American women today are interested in cultivating a Teddyesque machismo — but in Roar Softly, women writers recount witty and poignant tales of modern-day survival, from finding love (and sex) as a single mom to overcoming anorexia to adopting a child. Not only do their stories offer reassurance that no woman is alone in her struggles, but they also suggest better battle strategies — more womanly battle strategies, if you will — for those who shrink from the "muscle your way through" approach. As each essay demonstrates, women can overcome the challenges of their lives not only with strength, but also with grace. Contributors include Anne Lamott, Edwidge Danticat, Mary Roach, Elizabeth Fishel, Laura Fraser, and Anneli Rufus.

              5 out of 5 stars I can't recommend it enough.......2005-11-12

It's a very good book! The quality of writing was really good, and the essays themselves were inspiring in more ways than one. It was a great feeling reading what other women had to say on subjects I myself have confronted. Some of them even sounded the way I did! It is a really good book for women to read, because of all we have in common.
I have recommended it to some men at work, too, and at least one is started to read it. I told him to throw away all his relationship books and start learning the way women perceive and feel. I'm glad to say he's taken me up on it and is also enjoying the book.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-08-29

These are great short essays. Perfect for a mom to read, since most moms don't have much extra time and it's hard to read a long book. It's hard to put it down.

              5 out of 5 stars I'm Not Cheating.......2004-12-11

Confession: I'm one of the contributors to this book. But it's still literarily acceptable for me to review it because no one was more surprised than I at the quality of the writing (I speak not of my own here), the diversity of the topics and perspectives, the laughs, the tears. I don't usually read anthologies (although I'd better start, because I'm editing one as we speak) but this one is, how you say, GOOD.

If you are looking for a quick introduction to the issues of globalization this is the book for you. Brubaker clearly and succinctly demystifies this complex phenomenon.

She also describes ethical issues circling the many problems of resource distribution, the environment, and national sovereignty. She writes from the perspective of a Christian ethicist but anyone will profit from her discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Great little, critical book on globalization.......2002-12-15

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to catch up quickly on what motivated the 1999 WTO demonstrations in Seattle, WA. Brubaker explains what the World Bank, IMF, and World Trade Organization are, and their effects on the developing world -- from injustices in the maquiladoras at the U.S.-Mexican border to Wal-Mart subcontractors in China. Her critical analysis of the excess power wielded by corporate interests is inspired by her humanitarianism, feminism, environmentalism, and Christian faith. This work contains not just a diagnosis of the problems, but activist solutions, even feasible for the uninitiated.
There are some heavier duty books on the topic which offer more painstaking treatment of the structure of the global economic institutions and issues; but many of those are not what the intelligent, yet common reader is looking for. This one has the virtue of being an informed, quick read that explains the terrain and leaves us with something to do once we've put the book down. (For the detail-oriented, though, this work is shot-through with footnotes to up-to-the-minute references.)

4 out of 5 stars Mismanaged Trade by Kenneth Flamm.......2003-10-28

Ken Flamm is an economist and senior fellow in the Foreign Policy studies program at the Brookings Institution. In the late 1980s, Flamm published two highly influential books on the role of the governments of advanced industrial nations in the development of the computer industry -- Targeting the Computer (1987) and Creating the Computer (1988). In these books, he provided evidence against the arguments of authors like George Gilder and industrialists like T.J. Rodgers of Cypress Semiconductors that the role of government in creating the computer industry and other high technology industries in the United States was negligible.

Flamm argues in this long but ultimately rewarding book that it was only after the development of large-scale integrated circuits in the United States took the fledgling Japanese computer industry by surprise in the early 1970s that the Japanese government and industry focused on developing indigenous technologies for semiconductors. A series of joint government-industry projects succeeded by the end of the 1970s in enabling the Japanese semiconductor industry, or at least the part of it that produced DRAMs (dynamic random access memories), to become fully competitive with the U.S. industry.

Since demand for integrated circuits was rapidly expanding in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the U.S. semiconductor industry was willing to share the market with Japanese producers. Beginning in 1984, however, a sharp downturn in demand for semiconductors resulted in a shakeout in the industry, but only U.S. firms left the market while Japanese producers kept producing and selling at substantially lower prices. This led to the filing of anti-dumping petitions on the part of U.S. producers, upon which the Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission ruled favorably in 1985 and 1986.

Flamm claims, however, that Japanese pricing during this period could be explained as "a predictable outcome of normal market forces" (p. 428) and that U.S. antidumping laws were not designed -- as they should have been -- to take forward pricing behavior into account. Forward pricing is pricing below average costs in the short term so that demand for a firm's products will allow it to increase production in the long term, eventually reducing average costs so that they are below market prices. Forward pricing is rational for industries that have steep learning curves: that is, where average costs descend rapidly with cumulative production.

Successful antidumping petitions filed by U.S. firms against Japanese firms led to a major trade dispute and eventually to a negotiated settlement in the form of the Semiconductor Trade Arrangement (STA) of 1986. Under the STA, Japanese firms agreed to a system of floor prices for sales of their semiconductors in the United States and third-country markets, the Japanese government agreed to collect statistics on semiconductor production costs and prices, and the Japanese market was pledged to increase the sale of foreign-made semiconductors in Japan (to 20 percent of the market from the current level of around 10 percent).

The main argument of Flamm's book is that U.S. trade policy in the dispute was flawed, that it confused rational "forward pricing" with dumping (with a predatory intent) and that it unintentionally encouraged the formation of a Japanese semiconductor cartel, first under the administrative guidance of the Japanese government's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and later as a purely private affair among Japanese semiconductor firms.

Flamm does an excellent job of proving that this is what happened by analyzing a variety of data series on prices and costs and juxtaposing this with summaries of press reports and interview data. He shows, in particular, that there were wide regional differences in spot market prices in North America, Western Europe, and Asia that probably had their origins in the reduced investments in Japanese productive capacity engineered first by MITI and later by the industry itself to defuse the trade dispute.

On the basis of his analysis of the semiconductor dispute, Flamm recommends three main policy changes: (1) using marginal costs rather than average costs as the basis for antidumping rulings; (2) encouraging stricter enforcement of antitrust laws in foreign countries; and (3) multilateralizing the negotiations that led to the original U.S.-Japanese Semiconductor Trade Arrangement (STA) as a way of developing multilateral rules for high technology more generally. All of these recommendations are worthy of serious consideration, but the third is probably the most likely to be successfully implemented.

4 out of 5 stars a trip down memory lane.......2001-04-06

This is a highly detailed account of US trade policy toward the semiconductor industry, most of which involved Japan, America's primary competitor in this industry during the 1980s. The book draws on extensive secondary source materials (mostly industry publications) and interviews conducted by the author. Flamm is not shy about criticizing the work of others with whom he disagrees (Laura Tyson and David Yoffie, for example), but oddly fails to cite others whose parallel analyses predate this book (i.e. Andrew Dick on forward pricing strategies or Fred Bergsten and Marcus Noland on the quantitative impact of the semiconductor trade agreement).
