I got this book in advance of going out on a real surfing lesson and it really helped me prep for my first time on the waves. I was able to finish some of my instructor's sentences, which may have been a bit obnoxious of me but it made me feel a little more confident. When he used surfer slang in front of me ("Hey, look at the little Grommet!") I, having naturally read the entire book cover to cover including the glossary, knew exactly what he meant. Can a book really replace the one-on-one instruction of a real person? No. Can it help you PREP yourself for your first time hitting the waves so that you don't feel like a complete kook? YES! The authors give you an insight into surf culture, practices you can do you prepare yourself, a step-by-step guide to how to stand up on the board, and stories about surfing disasters and triumphs. Nothing, I repeat, nothing can replicate the experience of actually getting out there, catching the waves and learning moves from a professional. This book, however, will help you get ready if you're nervous about giving it a try. Its like having a personal cheering squad in your beach bag.

Best Surfing Book for Ladies!.......2007-04-30

This book is not only informative and helpful, but it is a great read! I laughed so hard I couldn't put it down. As a surf journalist, I've read all the girl's surf books out there. This was the first one to come out and by far the best. I was especially curious to read Izzy and Coco's book because they were the first to start an all-women's surf school. Surfing can be such a frustrating sport to learn, but Izzy and Coco make it fun gives you all the tools you need to be a true "Surf Diva."

This book was cute, but lacked real useful information and descriptions of techniques, moves and etiquette essential to holding your own in the water. Maybe because the authors run a surf school, they didn't want to give away all the good information that you pay a lot more for when you sign up for their school. This book was like a big advertisement for the surf school with extra tips about matching your bikini and toenail polish to your board. I appreciated the part about doing your part to keep the oceans clean, but that was the meatiest part of the book. I purchased two books for beginning female surfers at the same time. The other one was fabulous and I refer to it as a reference constantly. This one is more useful as a beach read on a flat day.

What I didn't know I needed.......2005-08-13

I was looking for a good book to help me learn the surfing basics so I could paddle out with my husband. This book makes surfing seem so darned fun I couldn't wait to get out there. Of course, my first time was like a washing machine and I'm covered in bruises -- but it was exhilarating! I wanted to give up at one point, but as I was dragging my board back to shore, I asked myself, is this what a diva would do? NO! I went back out (away from my husband this time) and was able to catch a wave (on my belly) for the first time! This book was very inspiring, especially because of all the stories and tips, such as not to have high expectations when you plan to surf, because the ocean is always presenting different scenarios. They also assure me that it's ok to catch waves laying down on the board in the beginning to get comfy with the feeling.

My one bit of feedback is that I would have liked a lot more how-to photos. I still don't quite understand how waves are measured, what constitutes "good waves", and how to get from laying down to popping up. This book did not cover some of the very basic concepts such as how to get onto the darned board gracefully or how to sit on it with out toppling over. They may assume that readers have taken their classes or already have some surf experience.

Great starter guide for girls and guys!.......2005-07-04

I attended Izzy and Coco's "Surf Diva" School in La Jolla in '98, and the divas are great teachers. So it is no surprise that this book is so good on covering the basics. It not only offers a "how to" on surfing itself, but everything that surfing entails, including surfer courtesy and handling equipment.

My stepbrother wanted to learn how to surf, and I got him a copy of this book too. There is a lot of banter in it that is directed at a female audience but, when it comes down to it, the breakdowns on surfing basics in this book are very comprehensive and better than anything else I have seen.

The questions in this book really helped me review the algebra and physics I hadn't dealt with in almost ten years. However, the authors assume you have been previously exposed to all the material, so if that's not the case for you (e.g. if you never took physics), you may want to pick up another book in addition to this one, or get some tutoring for the subjects you haven't taken. Otherwise, it's an excellent book; the questions are very similar to what was on the actual NLN exam I took in March. Even though I'd learned the material before, this book prepared me for the exam format, and helped me get a score of 164 (99th percentile).

As some one who has been out of school for 12 years, I used this book to study for approx. 3 weeks and received scores in the 99th percentile in all 3 areas! The science is a little weak, but if you keep reviewing and looking up WHY you got an answer wrong, you'll do fine. All in all a great study guide.

I used this book to get an idea of what type of material would be on the test. The book guided me in what to study and was very helpful in preparing me for the NLN exam. I had to re-learn how to divide and properly do math problems without a calculator. I used the vocabulary from the verbal section of the review book and studied them for about a month before the exam, which I would also recommend. Although this book is helpful, it is just an overview or a way to refresh your memory of what you've learned in the past. I highly recommend this book!

The story picks up!.......2005-09-18

There's a lot going on in this volume. This volume is where the story really starts to pick up, and probably because of that, it's one of my favorite volumes. We finally introduce Subaru-kun, and thoroughly introduce Sei-chan, my favorite CLAMP character of all time. I know he appeared before, but you can't have Sei-chan w/o Subaru-kun and call either one introduced. It also reveals Kamui's choice and the effects of that choice. I won't reveal anything, but if you stop and think, you can probably figure it out.

Sei-chan and Subaru-kun's first fight is half of what makes this volume great. My two favorite characters not really fighting. The beginning is great, with both of them talking to each other w/o much hostility. The end is great too, with Subaru-kun angsting over Sei-chan. hehehe ^_^

Fun things: Sei-chan and Subaru's first fight, full of sakura petals, neither of them really putting up a fight, both of them looking scrumptious through the entire thing, and lovely little blood smears which don't disappear until the end of volume 9, the CCD boys (Nokoru, Suoh, and Akira) appearing, looking oh-so-bish, Kotori acting like she's completely lost her mind, and Kamui actually acting like he's going to do something other than just stand around. oh, and Fuuma's last moments as Fuuma *claps hand over mouth*

Not-so-fun things: Sorata calling Sei-chan "Guardian of the Cherry Blossom Burial Mound" (It's Sakurazukamori, people!! *kicks Viz*), some rather weird translations from Viz, and general confusion about which sword is which.

Uh....not much else I can say but this is a visual treat! EYE CANDY and a story deeper than....just about anything!!! Clamp is, by far, the best manga team ever! This manga is a turning point in the X/1999 series and is one that is needed in any collection... I have this book and I think this is one of the most essential part in the X/1999 series ... and you really can't NOT read this book if your looking to understand the story. OF COURSE you've gotta read the books before this one... but this book contains some sexy stuff (AKA FUMA/EVIL KAMUI) that any Clamp fan will want to take note of! If you like gore (lots and lots of blood) and some sexy yummies (FUMA...SUBARU) Ya gonna love this. ALSO! The first fight between Subaru and Seishiro!!! Anyone who is trying to follow Tokyo Babylon's story this is a HUGE part in the story....This manga is all around essential for any Clamp follower!

Clamp's art is incredible, with flowing details and beautifully drawn characters...they're the mangaka that keeps on giving! This one is especially yummy to those who enjoy seeing Kamui-tachi in bloody situations. I would recommend it to anyone, just for the art, but the poignant sadness of the story is another factor that keeps me turning the pages, to the ultimate destiny that will one day inevitably befall Earth.

Although Willingham is a good story teller, it's clear that he hasn't been in the business of PROVIDING customer service since the 70's. Back then the customer was always right and businesses had time to make the customer happy. Today customers are more demanding and unreasonable. Time truly is money and it's getting harder and harder to go the exra mile when it means letting something else slide. Yet no one can afford to lose customers. The principles in the book are good: giving the customer your full attention, listening to them, making eye contact, inviting them back and so on. But there's nothing new here, and it needs to be updated for 2003. Come on Ron, get with the times and give us something we can use. Points for the quaint stories, though!

The atlas of contemporary capitalism is curious indeed. A desperately poor and civil-war-wracked nation, Liberia, is the world's shipping superpower; the Cayman Islands the fifth-largest financial center in the world; land-locked Zurich a venerable "offshore" banking center. Indeed, it is estimated that half of the global stock of money passes through tax havens. The logic of the offshore world, where millionaires and corporations roam in search of financial advantage, is slippery. It challenges many conventional assumptions about power and economics.

In the single most comprehensive account of the offshore economy, Ronen Palan investigates the legal spaces, unregulated and yet maintained and supported by the state system, that have emerged for purposes of international finance, tax havens, export processing zones, flags of convenience, and e-commerce.

The offshore economy had its beginnings in the late nineteenth century, saw early development after the First World War, and metastasized in the 1970s. Palan believes that a rapidly expanding offshore economy is now producing a new market in sovereignty; states have discovered that their rights to write law may be used as a commercial asset. This commercialization of sovereignty, he asserts, undermines the legitimacy of the nation-state and supports a form of nomadic capitalism.

Why? and How come? but not How? or What for?.......2006-04-05

This book is primarily focused on why the offshore zones were created and what forces keep them alive and thriving. It gives you a very high level overview from a historical and political point of view.

It doesn't explain the mechanics of the offshore, doesn't tell you how they function internally and doesn't tell you what they can be used for by the most of the readers.

I'd name this book "History of the Offshore World", because it's really more a historical research and analysis.

The book provides a lot of interesting facts but it's pretty hard to read. The style and structure don't highlight major topics and sometimes it starts looking like a braindump. The format is typical for a history book (a lot of text quotes, no graphs or formulas). But for the book of this size (small!) you probably finish it before you get bored.

Also, if you are interested in how to offshore US jobs, how to start offshore project in India, how to save on your personal taxes etc - this book is pretty much useless, look for something else.

Overall, if you are curious about the offshore and looking for some entry point to get started, this book will help you. But if you need some knowledge about offshore for business, this book probably won't give you any practical skills.

Poorly written; a polemic on politics, not offshore.......2006-02-16

I bought this book to learn about the past and present history of offshore--both legal and illegal. Instead I got a book on an opinion of capitalism and the nation-state that sounds decidedly reactionary, full of obscure neologisms (i.e. "Fordism" to mean mass production along the lines of Henry Ford)--in short, a term paper from a Marxist sociology class. The author is clearly biased against offshore but tries to sound balanced. I would not mind if he actually discussed offshore (i.e. the historian Eric Hobsbawm is communist but writes decent history books), but he does not--the book is largely about capitalism from a leftist perspective. It doesn't mention off-shore except in passing and by innuendo, along the lines of 'surely much of the money sent offshore must be from illegal activities'. OK. if you say so.

A sample exerpt: "So as capitalism 'recomposes' itself (reterritorializes) in front of our stunned eyes [WHY 'STUNNED'? THE AUTHOR DOES NOT EXPLAIN EXCEPT BY INFERENCE TO THE REST OF THE BOOK], by the most artificial means--i.e. through offshore and commercialized sovereignty and the numerical principle [IN A NUTSHELL THESE TWO PHRASES MEAN COUNTRIES SELLING CITIZENSHIP AND INVESTORS INVESTING BASED ON FINANCIAL FIGURES RATHER THAN PHYSICAL INSPECTION OF GOODS], we, the subjects, are in the position of both sovereign consumers/investors driving the new order [SHOULDN'T 'new order' BE CAPITALIZED?] and yet at the same time helpless observers, mere spectators of capitalism's grand journey." Whew! What depth. What rubbish.

I could deconstruct this passage in plain english, but the point is: what does this (and the rest of the book) have to do with "The Offshore World"? Nothing.

If you are interested in this kind of writing, and in the history of capitalism from a leftist perspective, there are far better books, such as anything by the famous French historian Fernand Braudel. I also recommend the author Ian O. Angell, who is outstanding, as a more right-leaning / free-market oriented author. If you are interested in theories of the state try Thomas Hobbes. But if you are interested in offshore avoid this author.

The definitive book on offshore remains to be written.

Postglobalization and the demise of the nation-state.......2004-06-15

In slightly under 200 pages, The Offshore World contains an illuminating summary of the global "offshore" system, which comprises offshore banks, export processing zones (EPZs), international banking facilities (IBFs), offshore financial systems (OFCs) or tax havens, flags of convenience, the Euromarket. Note that if you want to do business with one of these entities, you will do better to head for London, Tokyo, Liechtenstein or New York than anywhere outside territorial waters. "Offshore" is a virtual space defined by its exemption from taxes, regulations and other annoying features of the nation-state.

Ronen Palan brings an outstanding depth of knowledge of his subject to this book. He traces the roots of the offshore system to the late 19th century, when the concept of sovereign states was developing in ways that often presented obstacles to international traders. The result today is a system of non-sovereign states that has grown in parallel to, and generally with the support of, nation-states. Most of that growth has occurred since the late 1960's, at the time of the profitability crisis and the collapse of the Bretton Woods system. Today an estimated $2 trillion per day passes through the offshore foreign exchange market and 20% of total private wealth is parked in tax havens. And those figures are growing.

Aside from the breath-taking sums that flow through a system outside tax or regulatory control, what are the political implications of offshore? Palen's thesis is that nation-states have lost control of the monetary system: The offshore tail is wagging the sovereign-state dog. Wealthy individuals and multinational corporations can simply pick up their financial assets and take them offshore if nation-states don't lower taxes and regulatory requirements to their dictates. And without sufficient funds democratic states are in no position to provide either their populations or offshore facilities with the services and security they expect. The paradox is that offshore has been an inevitable outgrowth of the division of the world into sovereign states.

Professor Palan sees the growth of offshore accelerating. Sooner, rather than later, its dark matter will dramatically impact our visible world in ways we cannot yet foresee. "Offshore can end only when either the state system has ended its long half-millennial journey or capitalism itself has been replaced by another system."
