Book Description
This is a sparkling anthology of the best of The Wall Street Journal's "middle column" features that have appeared regularly on Page One of The Wall Street Journal for the past fifty years. The "A-hed"-so called because of its headline style-has evolved into an icon of American feature writing, its major charm being the ability to tell a story with wit and whimsy in 1,500 words or less. It's often a story a reader unfamiliar with the Journal wouldn't expect to find in such an august publication. Indeed, the bit of high-profile real estate that it occupies once held a daily tip sheet on the stock market. But the Journal's legendary managing editor, Barney Kilgore, decided one day that what the Journal's harried business readers really needed was a tonic or a diversion-a story that in his words, "floated off the page each day" and would be "the kind of story you don't expect to read in The Wall Street Journal." That explains why readers recently were treated to a piece on people who now freeze-dry their pets, and why a few years ago they read about the not-uncontroversial efforts to translate the Bible into Klingon. Those are but two examples of stories that actually appear in this unique and fascinating anthology.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing Heavy.......2003-12-06
For those who enjoy good journalistic writing, these stories are like eating a box of chocolates. Reading one or two a day can be a real treat. Reading a half dozen at a time may leave a saccharine aftertaste.
Editorial arrangement of the stories in topical groups is reasonable enough, but the editor plays coy with the date of composition, putting it at the end of the essay. It's as if the topics are so airy, it makes little difference whether they're true in the recent past or forty years ago. Enjoy the writing, chuckle over the odd characters profiled, don't take the book too seriously.
News Stories Of Lasting Quality and Value.......2003-11-09
Most daily journalism is written, edited and published under strict deadline pressure, and is as perishable as the newsprint it's printed on. But there are exceptions. Give a talented reporter freedom of time and subject matter, and sometimes the result can soar close to, if not actually achieve, the quality of literature. Some great examples of this are collected in "Floating Off the Page."
The Wall Street Journal is primarily known as a financial newspaper. But since 1941, the middle column of its front page has been devoted to a feature on just about any subject under the sun. What happened to the mail destined for the World Trade Center after 9/11? Why were people attempting to translate the Bible into Klingon--and why was there a dispute over how to do this? Why was a man trying to develop a non-flatulent bean? This is only a quick sampling of some of the stories to be found in this offbeat, entertaining, informative volume.
Some of these pieces are truly timeless, though most represent a snapshot of a past moment; all are worth another look. Keep it by your bedside or in your bathroom or carry it with you on your next trip. You'll find it a great one to browse and dip into again and again.--William C. Hall
Informative and Funny.......2003-06-23
Admittedly, I knew very little about the Middle Column of the Wall Street Journal before reading this book. Now, I might just have to get a subscription to WSJ! The stories unfold as if they are the creation of some short story writer. Would you ever think that getting a hole-in-one in golf could be a bad thing? Well, in Japan, it is....in a way. And if you think that Stephen King writes a lot of books, wait until you hear about the man who holds the world record. A lot of the stuff you will learn from this book is mainly to entertain friends, but it's just as entertaining as reading a novel. Plus, you will get a perspective of how people thought 25 years ago and just how right they were. The only thing preventing the book from getting 5 stars is that it might be a tad bit on the "long" side and the editor attempts to group the stories by content. Personally, I would have rather had it completely mixed up because one of the chapters is a bit "dry." All in all, a great read that will have you smiling quite a bit.
Interesting to read and useful as a gift.......2003-02-19
A few times a year we need a gift for someone whose tastes and interests are not well known to us. After perusing the many brief essays that make up this book, I know this will be a choice we'll use again and again.
First, the editor chose widely among dates available, resulting in a selection that includes not only material from the past decade, but studies that reach into the early sixties. It is intriguing to play a little game whilst reading each story: what decade is it? Sometimes you'll win; sometimes the answer will have you scratching your head for a while.
Second, the range of topics is virtually encyclopedic: from the academic ("The Art of the Perfectly Awful", a writing contest), to the esoteric ("The Bean of His Existence", about improving the quality of beans), to the banal ("Naked Assumptions", about nudist prudists), to the frankly bizarre ("Bear Hunting Is Hard on Wives"). There is much here you do not know about; there is probably plenty you have never heard of before.
Finally, some of the material is side-splittingly funny, some is thought provoking, and some is frankly poignant. This is far from being a one-note book; it invokes a full range of emotion whilst it ranges across time, geography, and subjects. This makes it a good gift for yourself or, for that matter, nearly anyone.
a good mix of stories.......2002-11-06
Some of them a extremely funny, a few quite serious. This book makes an excellent airplane read and shows off the wit of the WSJ's writers.

No more wasting time at meetings.......2006-06-28
All too often, meetings are dominated by two or three people who are more interested in hearing themselves talk than in maximizing the productivity of the group. Furthermore, how often have you left a meeting feeling frustrated that nothing got accomplished?
This book contains a number of systematic recommendations on how to handle these and many other pitfalls. The authors offer dozens of insights, some of which are common sense (for example, no personal attacks) while others are very creative methods to keep meeting attendees involved and accountable. One such idea is to recognize how the group makes decisions - consensus, chair's discretion, voice vote, or secret ballot - and rotate these techniques so that no single personality type is always in control.
Be warned that there are no eye-catching graphics or hip cultural references here. But if you want a no-nonsense, no-frills, textbook-like primer on how to get the most out of your meetings, check out this material.
A great resource!.......2006-01-20
My team and I at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society are proud to be highlighted as a case study in the book. Pat Sanaghan's direct work with us, which started with the effective meeting profile survey, established a clear base line for us to better utilize our strengths and understand our challenges regarding meeting management. We are putting our learnings into practice and have become a model team in the organization as a result. The book is an valuable tool for any business or organization that is "meeting driven". Thanks Pat!
Identifying Opportunities for Improvement in Groups.......2004-05-08
I highly recommend this book to any group who wants to uncover opportunities! It helps break down group interactions into manageable parts that are not too overwhelming to understand. Once the opportunities for improvement are identified, the book helps to guide a group through next steps. It doesn't just identify the problem areas, but provides solutions as well. This book is very valuable.
Our meetings are 100% better..........2004-04-23
This meeting inventory has taken our meetings to a new level of productivity. It was so easy to administer and score, plus it gives ideas for how to improve the areas that we needed to work on. I recommend this meeting survey to any leader who is serious about having meetings that are both enjoyable and productive. A great find for our organization.

Our Common Future (Oxford Paperback Reference)
ASIN: 0873716612 |
Book Description
The arrival of western science and economic interests to the tropics has dramatically changed the tropical environment and its ecology. Environmental Management in the Tropics discusses the ecology of the tropics and examines how it is different from the temperate zone where western science evolved. The author discusses how native people traditionally subsisted in different ecological zones of the tropics and how they rationalized their relationship. The author also takes a critical look at the impact of colonialism in the tropics and how it changed traditional cultures and their relationship with the environment. The current clash between economics and ecology in the tropics is explored in depth. According to the author, we are now able to draw "a line in the sand" and illustrate the consequences of continuing current practices. Environmental Management in the Tropics shows how this situation developed and discusses how the two opposing concepts must be brought back into harmony. The book is one of the few studies to take a truly interdisciplinary approach combining the serious inevitabilities of natural science with the variables of history, culture, politics, and economics. It gives us a new respect for the past and tradition of the tropics and clearly spells out why dramatic changes must occur to prevent further degradation of the tropical environment. Environmental Management in the Tropics is an important reference for ecologists, conservationists, scientists, researchers, environmental consultants, land managers and developers, members of the world regulatory community, and anyone working on projects in tropical regions.

Book Description
The story of black professional baseball provides remarkable perspective on several major themes in modern African American history: the initial black response to segregation, the subsequent struggle to establish successful separate enterprises, and the later movement toward integration. Baseball functioned as a critical component in the separate economy catering to black consumers in the urban centers of the North and South. While most black businesses struggled to survive from year to year, professional baseball teams and leagues operated for decades, representing a major achievement in black enterprise and institution building.
Negro League Baseball: The Rise and Ruin of a Black Institution presents the extraordinary history of a great African American achievement, from its lowest ebb during the Depression, through its golden age and World War II, until its gradual disappearance during the early years of the civil rights era. Faced with only a limited amount of official league documents and correspondence, Lanctot consulted virtually every sports page of every black newspaper located in a league city. He then conducted interviews with former players and scrutinized existing financial, court, and federal records. Through his efforts, Lanctot has painstakingly reconstructed the institutional history of black professional baseball, locating the players, teams, owners, and fans in the wider context of the league's administration. In addition, Lanctot provides valuable insight into the changing attitudes of African Americans toward the need for separate institutions.
The gradual movement toward integration during the 1940s marked the beginning of the end for black professional baseball. Though aware of the threat, Negro League owners failed to develop any plan to prepare for the possibility of integrated professional baseball, and in 1945, when Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers signed Kansas City Monarch infielder Jackie Robinson, it was a triumph for the nation's African Americans but an embarrassment for industry officials. The decline of black baseball from that point on was inevitable, and by the early 1960s the leagues had ceased to exist.
Baseball occupied an important social and economic role in black communities, yet histories of the Negro Leagues have often focused on the exploits of individual players or specific teams. In contrast, Neil Lanctot offers an account of black baseball that attempts to achieve a better understanding not only of the administration of the Negro Leagues but also of the unique forces shaping their operation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent but even handed review of black baseball.......2007-01-10
Great book, I bought it for my son and ended up keeping it for myself. Maybe he'll get his copy next year!
Fantastic History In One Volume.......2006-08-01
Neil Lanctot pens an outstanding history of Negro League Baseball and its historical significance in this brilliant one volume work.
There has been several important works on the Negro Leagues over the years, but none have been as inclusive on exploring the era as Lanctot. If the reader is looking for a book to quickly skim over, this is not the one to purchase. But you will be missing a vital book on a professional baseball league that has never received its true recognition.
It has angered me for many years that the Negro Leagues has become nothing more than a footnote in baseball history, seemingly "celebrated" a couple times a season with current pro baseball teams wearing "throwback" jerseys during games.
Lanctot's book should be a required reading for baseball's commissioner and other officials & then the steps should be taken to include the NLB statistics in "official" records, with additional classes of hall of fame inductees to follow the NLB Class of 2006.
A very well researched history that is about more than baseball.......2005-10-01
This is a very in depth book on the history of the negro leagues, but I feel more on the business side than the games. As I read this book I continually reflected on the business strategy and mismanagement of the league, the racism the players and owners faced, and the changing dynamics of a nation. A good book, but if you are looking to learn about the players and what they accomplished then this is not the book for you. If you want a book about sports management and history of race in the US from 1933 to 1960 then this is a great book.
Exellent History.......2005-09-05
The author is to be commended for the exellent research on a subject with few primary sources. The downside of this book is that it reads like an acedemic research paper rather than telling the story of a long gone istitution. Not an easy read but very detailed. Anyone truly interested in the old Negro Leagues would find this a very informative book. However if you are interested but would prefer something lighter then I would reccomend Mark Ribowsky's book "A Complete History of the Negro Leagues"
Great History, Boring Read.......2005-07-19
The book opened my eyes to a lot that I never knew about Negro League Baseball. I did not know how many leagues there were and how the players were treated in regards to Major Leagues. I did not know how the leagues were funded etc. There is a lot of good info in this book and there are parts where the story is good. After that it dies and some of it is quite boring, I mean the way Lanctot writes about certain things in dreadul.

Historic trivia is fascinating stuff. The secret to great trivia reporting is not just in the gathering of the details, however, but in the presentation. Organization is vital, because without an appealing structure, the mind won't grapple with the facts. The human brain needs an inviting presentation to wrap around any new information, and this is what D'Epiro and Pinkowish have done. It's why their compilation of 107 cultural questions is so beguiling.
The elemental secret of their innovative table of contents is the use of numbers. Starting with three and working their way up (with a gap here and there) to 24, they pose a series of intriguing questions which are then answered to everyone's satisfaction on the indicated pages. What are the three Laws of Thermodynamics? Who were the three Furies? and What are the three ages of Vico's historical cycle? These are the sorts of queries they present in the chapter entitled Three. Further chapters inquire after the four properties of a musical tone, the six flavors of quarks, the seven Virtues, the 12 Labors of Heracles, the 14 Points of Woodrow Wilson, and the unofficial Homeric titles of the 18 chapters of Ulysses.
While the questions are appealing in and of themselves, the answers are even better. Going far beyond mere lists, they delve into the histories and texts, the theories and significance of each. The question is the hook, but the answer is the prize, riveting you with more information than you'd anticipated, reminding you of the joy of learning. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
Can you name...Newton's 3 laws of motion? The 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse? The 5 pillars of Islam? The 6 wives of Henry VIII?The 7 kinds of plane triangles? The 8 Beatitudes? If you're not sure about the answers to the above, this is the book for you. A compendium of 101 culturally significant particulars from the fields of mythology, religion, literature, history, science, mathematics, art, and music, What Are the 7 Wonders of the World? is a stimulating fusion of facts and fun that makes for an invaluable reference and an entertaining diversion.
Questions are grouped in sections according to the number of items in their answer (all the 3s, all the 4s, all the 5s, etc.), so that the answers are in the form of easily memorized lists. You won't find Luther's 95 theses, or the 264 Popes, for example, but you will find everything from the 3 sons of Adam and Eve all the way up to the 24 letters of the ancient Greek alphabet.
This clever format lends itself well to quizzing and guessing, which gives it a deliciously sophisticated parlor-game quality. But for those who wish to delve a little deeper, there are thoughtful essays to go with each answer that include fascinating details and place the list in its larger cultural or historical context. Much more than a book of trivia, What Are the 7 Wonders of the World? offers a grand overview of the knowledge needed to appreciate many of the finest things in our cultural and intellectual life.

7 Wonders of the World.......2007-05-14
Absolutley superb trivia book. Saat down and read it in my FIRST sitting. Very enjoyable. Great seller, too; very fast turnaround time!
A Potpourri of Interesting Questions.......2006-09-25
This is a clever little volume which, for the most part, I enjoyed. Essentially, it is 101 questions (see the title for an example) with answers provided in short, generally engaging essays. For a triviophile like myself, it provided a lot of interesting stuff, though it's not really a book to be read straight through. Instead, taking a few questions a night should prevent information overload.
In addition, the book does have a few weakness. First, there is the unavoidable one of the selection of questions. Depending on your tastes, some questions will likely be less interesting than others. Also, the authors have the occasional tendency to throw in a judgement with their answers which can rankle, especially in the religious realm. Finally, there is the feeling that some of the questions are a bit of a stretch, shaped to fit the format the authors have chosen.
Still, I don't get the sense that the book is meant to be a reference work. It is meant to be an engaging exploration of a potpourri of interesting questions. In that respect, it works quite well.
Really interesting book.......2006-03-26
This book is wonderfull. It doesnt matter what you are interested in, you will enjoy this book. In this book there is everything from what are the three sons of Adam and Eve to what are the 24 letters of the greek alphabet. You will always find something interesting in this book.
Not your typical book of lists.......2006-01-02
I found this interesting book via a book club I belong to. I've used it extensively in research for debating as well as writing fanfiction. Encyclopedic in nature (it covers a wealth of subjects from history to science to the arts) and intelligently written, I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys learning.
Not Your Average History Book.......2005-08-07
I noticed this book in a library. After seeing a couple of pages, I knew I had to have this book. I bought the book a week later. It is definitely not your average history book filled with the same ol' dates and figures. It has a wide array of interesting facts that span thousands of years. If you enjoy reading and you want to gain true knowledge, this is definitely the book for you.

a fascinating and enriching journey that quizzically uses numbers to break down various hierarchies of knowledge and string together a wide range of topics in a way that almost makes sense. The writing is lively and engaging and the reader will discover that learning a lot in a short amount of time can be fun. It's a very creative book that I am glad to have stumbled across. It is thoroughly entertaining and substantial!

Book Description
The dollar is in trouble. It has fallen against other currencies for the past three years, and now its orderly retreat could well become a rout. This spells potential disaster for the American economy—and potential riches for a few smart investors. In The Coming Collapse of the Dollar and How to Profit from It, financial gurus James Turk and John Rubino show how the dollar arrived at this precipice, why it will plunge, and how you can profit from the resulting financial crisis.
The U.S. today is the world’s biggest debtor nation, printing money with abandon to sustain the illusion of prosperity. The federal government owes $7 trillion and its debt is soaring. As a society, we owe more than $37 trillion, or about $500,000 per family of four. Our trade deficit with other countries is staggering, and to finance this mountain of debt we’re flooding the world with dollars. The inevitable result: The dollar will decline until it is displaced as the world’s dominant currency. Precious metals will soar in value, and gold will reclaim its monetary role at the center of the global financial system.
Traditionally a haven during times of uncertainty, gold has risen dramatically since 2001. By the fall of 2004 it was up by nearly 50
%, at over $400 an ounce. But this is just the beginning.
James Turk, a leading gold authority and the founder of GoldMoney.com, and veteran financial writer John Rubino, show readers how to capitalize on gold’s dramatic climb. In The Coming Collapse of the Dollar, Turk and Rubino reveal which stocks and bonds will falter as the dollar declines and why that decline is virtually inevitable. They offer strategies for using gold coins, gold stocks, gold-based digital currencies, and other hard assets to create a profitable portfolio. And they explain how to make the most of your gold and other precious metal holdings, identifying the opportunities and pitfalls of buying gold mining stocks and the mutual funds that invest in them.
America’s debt binge has put its economy at grave risk. The value of the dollar is falling; many stocks are once again wildly overvalued; and bonds, tied to an ever-diminishing dollar, are a disaster waiting to happen. By investing in gold and other hard assets, Turk and Rubino explain how you can protect yourself from these dangers.
The Coming Collapse of the Dollar and How to Profit from It is a must read for every investor, whatever the size of his or her portfolio.

Ignore this book at your peril.......2007-01-11
Our financial survival and prosperity depend on properly structuring our investment portfolios. Can you afford to idly stand by and witness evaporation of the purchasing power of your dollar-denominated paper assets? It is still time to protect the remainder of your assets by converting much of it to the wealth of ages, gold. Gold is wealth in itself, independent of debt and empty promises. This is no idle speculation, this is a concrete actionable set of plans suitable for different individual situations. You could spend 20+ times more on a financial consultant and still not receive this vital advice. Do yourself a favor: buy, read and act upon this book. Then share the message with your loved ones.
Read it!.......2007-01-07
Another great practical book on economics and investing for the common man. I learned so much about how things are now in America from this book. I recommend it heartily to anyone who wants to know more about gold, fiat money, the mess this country is in, and the doom that awaits us.
Coming collapse of the $.......2007-01-06
awesome book...I read it right after "Hot Commodities" by Jim Rogers...awesome book as well...US has alot of problems with the greenback and its possible demise as the worlds reserve currency...Jim has been talking about this as well for some time and is certain that the US will lose this status as the govt. busily prints money at will....devaluing the $ and killing its value, creating the real inflation problem...the book is very comprehensive in its argument and insightful in its recommendations...fast read!
Good Introductory Text.......2006-11-11
Overall, the author presents the case for a dollar collapse in moderate detail. Using gold as a protection mechanism is also well laid out. For the novice in this field of investment, which seeks to understand major economically destructive change before it occurs, this book does lay out the potential dollar problems nicely. For the more advanced student, there is not much new information here.
Book review of the coming collapse of the Dollar..........2006-11-10
It was quite informative but since we are in late 2006 it was a little outdated as they are comparing Gold prices from 2 years prior. But it was right on the money because as of their writing this Gold did rocket up to $600/oz from $300/oz so they were correct in their analysis. Very good read. I recommend it.
