    Book Description

A wheel turns because of its encounter with the surface of the road; spinning in the air it goes nowhere. Rubbing two sticks together produces heat and light; one stick alone is just a stick. In both cases, it is friction that produces movement, action, effect. Challenging the widespread view that globalization invariably signifies a "clash" of cultures, anthropologist Anna Tsing here develops friction in its place as a metaphor for the diverse and conflicting social interactions that make up our contemporary world.

She focuses on one particular "zone of awkward engagement"--the rainforests of Indonesia--where in the 1980s and the 1990s capitalist interests increasingly reshaped the landscape not so much through corporate design as through awkward chains of legal and illegal entrepreneurs that wrested the land from previous claimants, creating resources for distant markets. In response, environmental movements arose to defend the rainforests and the communities of people who live in them. Not confined to a village, a province, or a nation, the social drama of the Indonesian rainforest includes local and national environmentalists, international science, North American investors, advocates for Brazilian rubber tappers, UN funding agencies, mountaineers, village elders, and urban students, among others--all combining in unpredictable, messy misunderstandings, but misunderstandings that sometimes work out.

Providing a portfolio of methods to study global interconnections, Tsing shows how curious and creative cultural differences are in the grip of worldly encounter, and how much is overlooked in contemporary theories of the global.

      Book Description

As more employees work non-routine hours, often in critical safety and security positions, recognizing and reducing stress and the human error it causes is more important than ever. Performance problems caused by unconventional work schedules and resulting fatigue are a significant cause of industrial accidents, lost productivity, and high medical costs. Shiftwork Safety and Performance offers practical solutions to managing fitness and health, improving alertness and sleep quality, and maintaining a social life while performing shiftwork. The author, an experienced safety consultant and trainer who has studied shiftwork around the country, explains the often disastrous consequences of inadequate alertness, and offers ways to improve morale and reduce accidents. If you supervise or train shiftworkers, this book will help you identify opportunities to improve workplace and worker safety. This easy-to-read, practical manual introduces scheduling strategies to improve alertness, enhance the quality of time away from work, and assist crew communications. It is the first and only complete guide on the complex subject of shiftwork and human performance, and the first book addressing the serious subject of shiftworker burnout.

5 out of 5 stars Great Library Addition.......2000-01-01

For several years I have been building a library of reference material to assist me in understanding the ecology and rehabilitation of madrean oak savanna and grasslands in southeast Arizona. As a layman in the ecological sciences but rehabilitation practitioner on my own land, I found this book to be very useful and readable. An excellent addition to a library for those seeking to build a general understanding of savanna vegetative interactions and management. I also recommend The Desert Grassland for those specifically interested in southern Arizona.

                Book Description

In North America Juniperus woodlands occupy approximately 55 million hectares, an area larger than the state of Texas. Various species of Juniperus have been increasing in density and are expanding into associated grasslands, reducing the size of the grasslands. The reason for the Juniperus expansion is highly debated, but has important implications for global change and fire regime studies.

Western North American Juniperus Communities addresses various aspects of the biology, ecology, and management of Juniperus woodlands and savannas, by synthesizing past, current, and proposed future research. The book will provide professionals with a solid background in Juniperus ecosystems, enabling them to manage the communities for maximum sustained productivity and diversity. Although the book focuses on Juniperus communities in North America, a discussion of other regions and larger research implications is included as well.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad you need a book, but.............2007-08-24

It would be nice if every piece of electronics a person buys didn't require hours of reading and studying to use. And the fact is, if you just want to do the basics, you don't need to read much. But to really make use of all the features of a good GPS, and understand the basics of how it works, you do need to read more than the manual that comes with it. This book does the job quite nicely. I can now do things with the GPS that I couldn't do before, and I even know a bit about how it works.

                4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-16

I'm only giving this book 4 stars because it is a little out of date. Other then that it makes for some really great reading.

                5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading.......2007-08-07

I agree with the other reviews.

Once I started reading this book, I had a hard time putting it down. The author
presents a lot of (useful) information in a clear and easily understandable format.
I'm new to navigation, so most of the material was new to me. But now I'm hooked
and can hardly wait to apply my newly acquired knowledge.

I also liked the references mentioned in the book. He doesn't overwhelm the reader
with too many of them. But the ones he mentions appear highly useful.

There are several books on GPS navigation, but I'm fortunate that this is the one
                I picked.

                5 out of 5 stars Best fast-read yet.............2007-07-24

Very easy and understandable reading. I like to read and time is valuable: much is saved with this book, without sacrificing information conveyance. Well illustrated, the examples are clear and I was able to grasp concepts quickly and thoroughly which had eluded me previously. I have six other "map & compass" books which I reviewed as I was reading this one, and this one was the standout for basics and somewhat beyond.

4 out of 5 stars Great for GPS newbies.......2007-03-14

I got this book to help me with my new GPS. It is both technical and hands on. It got me started with geocaching which has really helped me do more "fun" things with my GPS. Parts of the book are pretty technical (necessarily so) so I will be returning to the book as I get more experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Learning about GPS Tracking and Navigation.......2003-12-29

This is a great book to read if you plan on developing any type of GPS tracking or navigation system. While the book covers the the basics, you'll need some further resources on interfacing GPS receivers and such hardware to real-world devices.

An interesting article entitled "Tracking a Vehicle With GPS" can be read at www.closerworlds.com

A lot of mobile solutions are soon to hit the market such as mobile phones using GSM or GPRS to track a person. This book will help to understand how it all fits together. It would have been nice if the book could have touched on how older communication systems like VHF radios can transmit GPS data. For that you'll have to visit www.closerworlds.com or some other website with such resources.

3 out of 5 stars Less selling, more information.......2001-09-14

This is, as billed, a comprehensive book. So much so that it becomes repetitive. Nevertheless, it omits some important information, and IMHO gets other information wrong. It is also a blatant, and oft-repeated commercial for the author's GPS road map series and more.

The book spends a great deal of time describing the MGRS (old) Grid, but fails to prove that it's better than the far more widely used UTM grid. It also never explains what the MGRS (new) Grid is, why it was developed, or why one should use the (old) system. One gets the impression that the author developed the grid at the time of the Gulf War, built it into his road map series, and doesn't want us to know about its successor.

It's hard to trust an author who recommends the lensatic compass over the modern protractor compass (e.g., Silva). The lensatic requires the user to orient the map in order to to use the compass, and to carry a protractor to transfer azimuths from the compass to the map and vice versa. This is exactly what the protractor compass was designed to avoid!

If you don't know how to use a map and compass, there are better books than this to learn it from.

There is no discussion of GPS problems and how to cope with them. It's not unusual for a GPS receiver to report that you are 2 feet from a waypoint, and then report the waypoint 100 feet away. This is probably the result of another problem with the book: it was written before the government increased the precision of GPS from 100 meters to 10 meters.

The book contains a great many illustrations, most of which are of no use at all. Photos of many different GPS receivers, all now obsolete; photos of outdoor scenes, etc. Many are in full color, and increase the cost of publication.

Finally, one misses a clear, organized description of each feature that can be found on a modern GPS receiver, and what is desireable in each. What screen options do you need? How good must the screen resolution be? What will you need to transfer information to and from a PC? How can one maximize battery life? How does a track differ from a route? When should you use one or the other?

One might be better off to find a compact, more recent reference that is well organized.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent land nav. review with unbiased GPS information.......1999-03-23

Excellent land nav. review for the trained navigator. Concise unbiased info regarding the use of GPS with land nav. skills. Highly recommended.

In easy-to-use outline form, this little book is a handy distillation of the best-selling MLA Handbook, with all the information a student needs to format a typescript, list sources at the end of the paper, cite sources in the paper's text, and avoid unintentional plagiarism. It also includes a sample outline and research paper and, for writers in the social sciences, a brief discussion of the style preferred by the American Psychological Association. Up to date-with rules for citing such new media as CD-ROMS, videotapes, and online databases. Includes a complete sample outline and research paper, with an appendix on APA style.

1 out of 5 stars Out of date!.......2005-10-03

The book is very useful & accurate for citing books and other print articles, but has no information on citing web pages, emails, or other electronic texts. It is based on the 1995 4th edition of MLA, while MLA is up to the 6th edition (2003)

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Although Incomplete, Source On MLA.......2003-05-05

This Review refers to the paperback edition of The Essentials of MLA Style: A Guide to the System of Documentation Recommended by the MLA for Writers of Research Papers, by Joseph F. Trimmer.

Trimmer's book is one pertaining to the proper way of citing sources via the MLA standards. There are thorough examples and explanatory details allowing the user to easily format their work according to the accepted standards. The Essentials of MLA Style demonstrates each citation and works cited statement empirically, and even contains a correctly formatted essay on recycling on which the proper ways of in text citing are pointed out. An APA style section is also contained in the back of the book.

The work provides plenty of examples and displays a good number of MLA procedures. However, it does not properly go into internet or photographic source work. Otherwise, it displays a good amount of the proper form of MLA style documentation.

The literary style presents the topic in a clear and concise manner, creating a smooth sentence structure and professional air about it. The author does not stray from the topic, but overuses certain words at times.

The Essentials of MLA Style is a highly recommended source for anyone interested in composing a paper through that particular style, or anyone merely interested in how the style is used. Overall, Trimmer provides an excellent reference for those wishing to write research papers using the MLA form of documentation.

5 out of 5 stars CONCISE and easy to use MLA how-to book.......2003-04-26

Bought for my Kidlet, she's found it a wonderful guidebook to writing MLA style papers. We looked at the full-version (over 200 pages) and it was, quite frankly, overwhelming.

This one though, we have found to have all the information she requires to write decent papers for her college professors. Thus far, all A's too! I have recommended it to my nieces because of the easy to use format. The index is thorough and the examples (profuse) make following the format SIMPLE.

                5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2000-04-10

This book really helped me write an excellent paper. Everyone should get this book because it is useful until your learning days are over. This book really helped me a lot.

                  3 out of 5 stars Not insightful.......2007-05-24

This a book that's not terribly insightful about CRM. It's a broad brush overview of commercial applications in the space and some conventional wisdom. Found it to have much repetitious pedantic pages. Wished that there were more discussion on business process and best practices.

                  5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-05-14

Great resource! Filled with lots of statistics for CRM industry and great insite into the challenges.

This is an excellent book for those interested in understanding the strategy behind CRM.

5 out of 5 stars Great tehnology review.......2003-06-14

This is the bible for defining what CRM is, and is not, as well as categorizing all the technology offerings and giving good advice as to how to choose the right technology. I also read "CRM For The Common Man" by Russ Lombardo and thought it was a great precursor to CRM at the Speed of Light. CRM For The Common Man describes how to plan your CRM strategy up front, while Greenberg's book takes you to the next steps involving the technology. A great pair.

                  5 out of 5 stars What a great education!.......2002-03-15

This book was truly one of the greatest educational books I've read. Whether it was intended for this or not, I don't know but what a great business overview of what CRM is as a whole. Paul's ability to simplify and his great sense of humour makes this book easy to read, easy to understand and was actually one of the most fun and informative books I've read in awhile. If your looking for a great understanding of CRM with a book that is hard to put down, this is the one. I can't wait for his second edition!

The best behind-the-scenes account of the NAFTA negotiations. Cameron and Tomlin have meticulously researched and analyzed all aspects of the deal, based on interviews in all three countries. Moreover, the book is written in a readable, entertaining style. The only problem with the book - which is why I dock it one star - is that the theory looks like an add-on. It has little predictive value, despite the authors' claims, and attempts to fuse theories with sometimes conflicting assumptions. Nonetheless, the empirical work is outstanding.
