I was searching one day on Amazon.com for books realting to Appalachia and ran across 'The Rosewood Casket'. After reading the summary I quickly ordered the book. I fell in love with it quick. I fininshed it that night and quickly ordered more. I feel like I know Nora Bonesteel and all the others. I love how she intertwines history with her stories. I can't wait for more.
McCrumb stumbles under pressure.......2005-08-10
After the much deserved, raving reviews of her earlier work, it is glaringly obvious while reading this novel that McCrumb is trying too hard to live up to her own standards, and the results lead to a very disappointing effort. This author is a "natural" storyteller, and that's why her previous books were so fresh and applauded. While reading The Rosewood Casket, the reader is often aware of the author's erratic attemtps to please the critics, and this truly effects the flow and believability of her natural storytelling. There are many groan inducing passages throughout the novel, many highly forced and completely unbelievable, and many appears to be rushed without much thought being put into them. The overall feeling after completion is that it was basically a very silly and mediocre tale, laced with moments of the author's natural gifts, alas, fleeting moments, but, not nearly enough to ever recommend this book.

"The more things change, the more they stay the same." The Rosewood Casket demonstrates how true this old saying is. McCrumb cleverly melds historical figure Daniel Boone with novel character Clayt Stargill, making this close to a time travel mystery with history repeating itself. The timeless tensions inherent in relationships - father/son, brother/brother, husband/wife, friend/friend, nature/man - play a pivotal role in this story that revolves around basic questions about who owns the land. The resolution of the central mystery involving the apparition in the woods is chilling.
McCrumb is a skilled, elegant writer - her prose is a pleasure to read.

If Sharyn McCrumb wrote the book you know it will be great. She is a wonderful author and all of her books are so good. She makes you feel like you are there and that you know the people that you are reading about. From the first to the last page it's got you. Do read this wonderful book.
The father has saved Rosewood so that when he dies his sons will built him a casket. The sons all live in different places and have not seen each other for a while but they all come back to do this for their father.

Satisfaction of Hours.......2007-04-04
Lacan is one of the most enigmatic, fascinating, and turgid philosophers (argue if you will)/creators to have ever lived. This volume is Lacan at his best. One may spend hours on an essay, Das Ding, for example. The pay-off, however, is incalculable. His interpretation of Antigone in this volume rates among the best ever elaborated by a theorist of any type. He shows this first true literary heroine in all of her sublimity. Whereas Heidegger deals with Antigone abstractly, Lacan writes as if he knew her: as if her loved her and needs to tell us the motivation behind her tragic necessity. While perhaps not the perfect Seminar of Lacan's with which to begin, it is far from the worst. Certainly it is essential once one has been introduced to Lacan's thought. Moreover, the very title of the Seminar, "The Ethics of Psychoanalysis," is enough to justify the time it takes to examine it. Indeed, the title is to be taken in two senses, both as the ethical doctrine that should be practiced by the analyst, and as a possible opening into an altogether different experience of thinking about ethics for the non-analyst. This is a truly essential book.

This is a wonderful book for learning to intelligently use Beyer Speed Figures in your handicapping. Cardello gives a helpful background on the statistics of Beyer speed figures, especially his own statistics on Beyers calculated for turf races. Even more important, he provides example after example (from dirt, turf, sprint, and route races). Gradually you begin to understand how to apply Beyers and how they can improve your chances of winning. There is no 'formula' for using Beyers. He teaches you the 'art' of using Beyers through his examples. I read this quickly and it has already helped me. I plan to read it over and over again until his way of applying Beyers becomes second nature to me. Of course, I expect my understanding and application of these principles to be modified and improved with personal experience.

Of the DRF peperback series on the elements of handicapping, this is clearly the best work. Cardello really gets in depth on how to weed out value in form cycles by using the Beyer figures. His real life example of how to find "hidden" lines in the past performances are explained in a way that most anyone can understand how he approaches the neverending quest for winners. Clearly he is an expert in handicapping and not just a fan writing a book to fill space on the shelf. Strongly recommended for novices looking to inject a little value by using readily available information in the form, as well as, more experienced handicappers who may be missing out on more opportunities to cash in.
Great Handicapping Book.......2005-03-22
In preparing to bet the Kentucky Derby and other races this year I read Andrew Beyer's fantastic book "Beyer on Speed" and this book. These books go together like ham and eggs. After devouring the information in Speed to Spare I, like any eager handicapper, was looking forward to applying some of the tips in this book. One way this book made me think "different" is how it helps you spot the potential favorite that may be ripe for a fall which can result in a big pay-off. I went to a track in Michigan that was simulcasting races at Santa Anita (in March, 2005) and WHAM! - I hit a trifecta using the information found in this wonderful book; for the first time in my life found myself at the IRS window with a payoff of over $3,000.00! The presentation of information in this book is easy-to-follow and the actual examples really help the "part-time" handicapper that only spends a limited amount of time at a racetrack each year. I salute Joe Cardello's book and urge anyone interested in using Beyer figures to enhance their trip to the track to buy and read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Speed to Spare is not a book you read; it is a book you devour. Horseplayers who use the Beyer Speed Figures published in the Daily Racing Form who do not yet own a copy of this book, pick it up immediately (after all, it costs only eight win bets after tax). Read it. When you're done, read it again. Follow along, both in the book's examples and in random races you pick from your Racing Form. You will learn more about speed figure handicapping in an afternoon than you have learned since DRF started publishing the Beyer Speed Figures. Guaranteed.

Greatest thing since Woodward and Bernstein.......2004-05-11
Andrew Beyer must be the best thing to come out of the Washington Post since Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein....hey, who says politics and horse racing aren't analogous??
Seriously though, Cardello has done a superb job of taking the figs and giving Joe (or Jane) Horseplayer what he desparately needs in 21st Century wagering...a concise guide in how to cull the figures in the PP's, establish a pattern, and, perhaps most importantly, begin with eliminating the losers.
OK, OK, I know, easier said than done. But this book should definitely be on every handicapper's reading list. Well, only those who wish to take more currency from the mutuel windows than they push through them.

An Insightful Tour of the English.......2000-04-05
Linguists call roots "segmental morphemes", but we know them as prefixes, suffixes, and elements. Kennedy's book provides a good reference regarding the roots of the 8,000 or so "standard vocabulary". The secret in making these kinds of reference books work is to provide cross references that encourage the reader to explore and discover gems that they weren't looking for (something akin to "surfing" the book). The format of Kennedy's book, and the clarity of its presentation masterfully achieves this objective. My only gripe with this book is that it stops at the obvious - mainly the Latin or Greek source of the root. But we know that the words and their roots go much deeper into the past, to their Proto-Indo European source. If this book had gone that far back, it would have been the indispensible standard. Still, its a very good book and strongly recommended for the wordsmith.
Review of "Word Stems".......2000-03-04
This is a useful book, especially for English teachers and really anyone interested in the etymological history of basic word roots in the English language. Sure we all know what prefixes like "anti" and "post" mean, or suffixes like "ship" or "dom," but what about common word roots like "cumb," as in "incumbent" or "succumb," or "sider," as in "consider" or "sidereal"? This book is not for everyone, but if you are interested in strengthening your vocabulary or just browsing the origins of words while taking a lengthy visit to the latrine, this is the book for you.

Gripping tale of Medieval Europe.......2007-08-28
Eric Jager does a marvelous job bringing the late middle ages to life. He uses the story of the infamous duel between Carrouges and Le Gris as a backdrop for an in-depth look at civil life during the period, which is surprisingly similar to our own. In addition, Jager masterfully builds the suspense and makes you care about the outcome like any good crime writer should. This book is a lot of fun and you'll learn something too.

Watched by the King of France, and an avid audience, two men in armor are enclosed in an arena. No, it's the very last trial by combat in France, in the year 1387. Jean Froissart wrote about it in his Chronicles, and it spurred many stories and legends, and entered into public and romantic imagination -- Sir Walter Scott used it as the climax in his novel Ivanhoe and it has still some remnants in today's world.
Author Eric Jager shifts through old chronicles, notebooks, and legends to put together the truth. In the area of France known as Normandy, two men of knightly birth started out as friends, both of them vassals of a Count Pierre. Jean Carrouges was a knight, fought as a mercenary, and sought to gain more lands and add to his family name. He had a friend, named Jacques Le Gris (the grey) who was a squire (not quite a knight), but also a skilled fighter. Perhaps Le Gris had a more personable character, but as both men grew older, it was Jacques who was favored by the Count in land settlements, while Jean seemed to be forgotten and overlooked. Soon, fueled by jealousy, the two friends had turned into bitter rivals.
But Jean married a young heiress, Marguerite, for his second wife. She was modest, beautiful and an heiress to a sizable estate. Alas, she and Jean had no children, despite several years of marriage. After a time, Jean was off settling a dispute that lasted for several weeks, and Marguerite was alone in the care of her mother in law.
When Jean returned, his wife had a curious story. Ashamed, but proud, Marguerite told him late one night that Jacques Le Gris had come to her home and with the help of one of his men, brutally raped and beaten her. She had the bruising to prove it, and maintained that it had been rape. Even worse, she was pregnant, with possibly a longed-for son.
The husband sided with his wife, and together they went to their lord, Count Pierre, to see justice done. But the Count sided with Le Gris, and the couple were left with only one choice for justice -- to go to the King and appeal.
It's quite a story. And there is plenty of documentation to back it up as actually having happened. Jager also goes into the laws of inheritance and honor. And women -- one very large problem to Marguerite's claim in the eyes of the medieval mind was that she was pregnant. To them, a woman turning up pregnant after crying rape was thought to be lying -- pregnancy was thought only to occur if a woman enjoyed a sexual encounter, and that said that she had been a willing participant, not a victim.
I won't tell you how the tale turns out, but the author manages to mix in history and legend into a thrilling excursion into the past. He also remains true to the mindset of the period, and how religion played a part in resolving a difference. Here, it was thought that God would favor the winner in a combat, and justice would have been determined. While the style does get a bit florid in places, it's also a very enjoyable read.
Halftone illustrations from contemporary manuscripts, maps, and photographs of armor illustrate the volume, and there is an extensive series of footnotes and bibliography. It's well researched, and the tale of what happened afterwards is just as interesting as the story of the duel itself. If you are fan of the middle ages, this doesn't loose any of the romance of the period, nor does it get so wrapped up in the details.

"In its private and illegal later form, the 'duel' only dimly reflected the solemn grandeur of its medieval golden age, when angry nobles challenged each other and threw down the gauntlet, then sheathed themselves in armor, swore heavy religious oaths before priests, and spurred their warhorses onto a walled field to fight it out before thousands of witnesses with lance and sword and dagger, putting at risk their word and their honour, their fortunes and their lives, and even the salvation of their immortal souls. The world was not to see the like of such spectacles ever again."
An truly well-researched and dramatic story. Highly recommended.

I love this type of book. The author paints a vivid picture of the society the duellists live in - its customs and values and does a great job of linking these to their emotions and motivations. He describes the places where the action took place in detail, providing pictures and telling the reader where they were and what they are - or are not - now. Having created the world in which the duel took place, and the background, the account of the duel itself is riveting. All in all an excellent book.

This book was simply wonderful! The research must have been tremendous! It was fun to reach back in time to get a glimpse of medieval laws and ethics. At times I couldn't put the book down! I can't wait to read it again!

This book would make a wonderful script for a movie. I'm surprised no one has discovered it! Medieval feuds, battles, duels, romance, rape, knights and squires, court scenes ---- everthing but a high speed car chase! Only 200 pages is a short read on the edge of your seat. And it's TRUE!
