    Book Description

Globalization and the Race for Resources explores how five nations-Portugal, the Netherlands, Britain, the United States, and Japan-achieved trade dominance by devising technologies, social and financial institutions, and markets to enhance their access to raw materials.

Through ecological and economic explanation of resource extraction and production, Stephen G. Bunker and Paul S. Ciccantell reveal globalization as the result of the progressive extension of systematically integrated material processes across cumulatively greater space. Drawing from extensive historical research into how economic and environmental dynamics interacted in the extraction of different materials in the Amazon, especially in the development of the iron mine of Carajas, the authors also illustrate the profound connection between global dominance and control of natural resources.

        Book Description

This volume of Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory and Labor-Managed Firms consists of ten original papers. The first five papers address the effects of institutions of governance (at the workplace and corporate levels), including new forms of workplace governance (e.g., self-directed teams), a traditional form (or trade unions) and financial participation schemes. The subsequent three papers turn to the issues of the determinants of the incidence of such institutions, followed by two theoretical contributions.

The paper by Tor Eriksson introduces a new survey of participatory employment practices in Danish firms, and connects these practices to productivity gains for the firm and wage gain for workers.

José Alberto Bayo-Moriones, Pedro Javier Galilea-Salvatierra, and Javier Merino-Díaz de Cerio introduce a new telephone survey of participatory employment practices in 965 manufacturing establishments in Spain, and investigate whether these practices lead to gains for the firm and workers.

While the above two papers focus on new institutions of workplace governance, the next paper studies a traditional institution of workplace governance, i.e., trade unions. Chris Doucouliagos and Patrice Laroche conduct a meta-analysis of the effect of unions on productivity growth.

All three papers so far concentrate on non-financial aspects of governance. The next two papers tackle such financial aspects. The contribution by Agustin Ros is an empirical study of the effects of employee ownership on effort/shirking and horizontal monitoring based on rich survey data collected by the author on an employee owned firm and 6 comparable private firms.

The paper by Everaert and Hildebrandt contributes to the literatures on transition economies and participatory firms by examining the determinants of the incidence of soft budget constraints (SBCs), in particular enterprise ownership structure (including different forms of private ownership).

The next three papers turn to the issues of the determinants of participation. Andrew Pendleton, Erik Poutsma, Jos Van Ommeren and Chris Brewster use a unique cross-national survey of financial participation schemes in 2,506 establishments in 14 EU countries, and try to study the determinants of the adoption of such schemes.

Christopher Adams uses rich data on 1,153 product line workers in 162 British private sector manufacturing establishments to examine the use of group incentives (profit sharing or employee share ownership) and worker participation in decision making (specifically over the range of tasks performed).

The paper by Nicholas Wilson, Hao Zhang, and Andrew Robinson is an empirical study that examines hypotheses arising from a transaction cost economics (TCE) framework to explain employee share ownership.

The last two papers are theoretical contributions. Jan Erik Askildsen and Norman Ireland carefully develop a model of bargaining by a union and a firm over future benefits (e.g., a defined benefit pension) when workers may not receive these benefits either because the firm goes out of business before the benefit is to be paid or the worker leaves the firm before the benefit is vested.

In his paper "Comparative Systems, Destructive Trade and World Distributive Justice," one of the pioneers on the broad field of participatory and labor managed firms, Jaroslav Vanek, extends earlier work by presenting an analysis of the impact of international trade in today's globalized economy.

5 out of 5 stars To make a Freudian slip on a banana peel .......2005-01-11

Freud did not see jokes as minor nonsense and insignificance. He saw them as deeper messages delivered to us from our unconscious. He saw them as telling the secrets about ourselves to ourselves and the world that we do not necessarily want to tell. He saw them as acts of aggression and as acts of self- defense. In fact Freud is one of the few theorists of jokes and laughter that the world has had. In my opinion while Freud's understanding of jokes is not exhaustive and all- comprehensive it does illuminate much about a certain kind of humor. And it does teach us something about ourselves which we had not really noticed before Freud taught it to us. Freud himself is of course a source of endless jokes today , but it is not wrong to say that at least some of these jokes should be about his great genius and ability to see and say where others before him did not.

4 out of 5 stars Freud loosens up a little.......2000-10-31

The logic of Freud can sometimes be overbearing when he is dealing with the makings of a joke. However, he does at times seem to drop his guard, speak in easy to understand terms, and give information that can be understood. If anyone is pursuing comedy in any form, this book would be helpful, and will help you compare your analyzation of what you do with someone who knew very well how the human mind worked. I've applied several of his concepts on stage and have found them successful.

Experience the terror of flying at 28,000 feet amidst enemy flak and fighter planes during the winter of 1944-1945. Lt. Clark flew as the co-pilot of a "fFlying Fortress" with "The Bloody Hundreth", the famous 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force. After each of his missions, Lt. Clark recorded a diary describing his combat experience. These diaries are being published for the first time in over 60 years. His unfolding stories provide a realistic and chilling account of aerial combat in the brutal air war over Europe. Several "war stories", all true, provide additional drama and a little humor to this firsthand account of this WWII combat pilot. Witness the remarkable photographs from the authors personal collection that tell and show the story of near misses from flak and the dramatic dropping of 500 pound bombs on German targets during heavy German counter attacks with flak and fighter bombers.

5 out of 5 stars An Eighth Air Force Combat Diary.......2001-11-20

This book is written by a Co-pilot of the 418th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group based at Thorpe Abbotts, England.

It is his diary of 32 combat missions during the European Theatre of Operations September 1944 to March 1945.

I found this excellently detailed as it was written at the time.
It describes his training as a pilot in the US, the Trans-Atlantic flight in a B-17 from Lincoln, Nebraska to Valley, Wales and flying combat missions over Germany.

Each mission description starts with a copy of his briefing notes which detail engine start, taxi and take off times, target name, altitude formation and callsigns for fighter escorts! Also a newspaper clipping from that day the mission was flown.

Copies of John Clark's combat flight log are included towards the end of the book.

This book is full of photographs never before published; taken of the formations of B-17s streching endlessly across the sky with streaming contrails, the flak clouds over the target, on base scenes of nissen huts in the fog, frost on the trees, aircraft sitting on their hardstands in the early morning mist, and photographs of the crews.

When reading this book, you can visualize everything that is happening, emotions are described and felt when and engine is out, when enemy fighters pass through the formation, when flak burst nearby, or finding that there may not be enough fuel to make it home!

After the war in 1962, 1966, and 1987 he returns to the base he once flew from to find it deteriating even more with each visit.

The only remnants in his last visit is the control tower that has now been restored as a museum and a memorial to those who served with the 100th Bomb Group.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading personal accounts of World War II.

The book that inspired the ESPN documentary 151: The Greatest Streak is now Revised and Updated!

By 2002, The Streak—a historic 13-year run of consecutive wins by the Spartans, a high-school football team from Concord, California, that couldn't be beat—was still going strong. In this revised edition of When the Game Stands Tall, author Neil Hayes, who had unrestricted access to the De La Salle team, writes from the inside about the games, the players, and their visionary coach, Bob Ladouceur, who managed to amass the highest winning percentage in football history (.995) through standing for something greater than winning. The book, which also features interviews with major sports figures like Bill Walsh and John Gruden, is a revealing portrait of the coach who believed above all in instilling basic life skills where winning is not the goal, but merely the byproduct of playing the game.

The Streak had become a national story long before it ended in September 2004. In this revised paperback, Neil Hayes catches up on the lives of the main characters and takes readers through the final tumultuous year. What results is a timeless and inspirational story of struggle, tragedy, and triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insight to motivation.......2007-10-18

I thought this book was excellent. Not only is the story of such a remarkable winning streak noteworthy in itself, the story of Coach Bob Ladoceur will change many people's view of the nature of a winning coach. It appears that he and his staff really do care more about their players than about the game and, certainly, The Streak. I learned some key things about what makes high school boys tick and what makes teams accomplish more than they believe they can.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Program.......2006-12-20

This is a very well written book by Neil Hayes. I liked how the author looks back on the past of the De La Salle football team, while going through the present season. Another thing I liked was the way the author made you feel like you were part of the team. A way he made you feel that way was by showing the speeches head coach Bob Ladeucuer speeches before and after the games. I liked that Neil Hayes followed the team around to show the more in-depth look at one of the most well known High School teams. I especially liked the speech after their first lose in the 2004 season. Overall I thought this was an extremely good book and I would recommend this to anyone who would enjoy a good sports history novel. This was a great read and was easy for me to understand. I also liked the pictures they had in the book to show what the players were like.

5 out of 5 stars The best of what's around.......2006-07-04

This book is about so much more than football. I am a high school English teacher, but my sports background allows me to appreciate the importance of developing the whole student-to celebrate not only the essays they write, but also the great blocks and hits they have on the field, or the great music they create. Lad and the DLS coaching and teaching staff are successful at doing exactly that: developing whole young men who are thoughtful, respectful, and disciplined in the way a man needs to be as they face the world outside of the classroom, develop meaningful relationships, and eventually become fathers themselves. Thank you so much Coach Lad for allowing Neil Hayes to write this book and inspire the rest of us, football coaches, teachers, parents-to do our best by our boys so they can be their best.

5 out of 5 stars A great example of what happens when you keep the main thing the main thing........2006-04-27

Not everybody that read this book liked it, judging from the other reviews here.
What I appreciated about the book was the look at coach Lad, and what he emphasized in his coaching.
It seemed that he was most concerned with challenging his players to be disciplined, to work hard, to love each other, and to grow in maturity. He uses football to do it, and I would say that he is very good. De La Salle's winning streak is a symptom of a much deeper, more profound success that that football team is experiencing. I love this book because it shows that when you love your players, and they love each other and are willing to work to show each other that love, then winning happens.

5 out of 5 stars When The Game Stands Tall.......2006-04-03

I have had the privilege to play for the De La Salle Spartans on the J.V. level. Although I have never played on var yet, I know what it is to play for the Spartans. There is a brotherhood of love and Unity, that is the key to winning. I know ther is no recruiting, people want to come to De La Salle for more than sports,to learn more about themselves and their lives. After all, the motto is "Enter to learn, leave to serve", and that is exactly what the school and football program do. I would recommend this book to anybody looking for an inspirational guts and glory story.

This is more European Portuguese, so keep that in mind. Super small and good for travel, but I didn't get much use out of it. Just being honest.

4 out of 5 stars Best available, but not perfect.......2006-11-30

I've owned a Collins gem Portuguese dictionary since the 1970's. I have carried it for years when I needed it. I have worn off half the cover from use. (Yet the binding is still intact, and there are no loose pages, so you know it is of good quality.) The 4th edition is the current edition.

Having used all the various editions, and still using them all as I keep one in various places at home/office etc., I can compare the strengths and weaknesses.

First of all, the Collins gem dictionary is the best portable dictionary around. I have used or examined all of the others and thrown or given them away because the Collins is the best. It is written clearly, has the most words, and contains as much information as possible for a small book. It is truly pocket size, meaning it will fit in your shirt pocket. Over the years it has gotten a little thicker due to more words, more definitions of each word, and thicker paper. I personally think it's about a half inch too thick to be really comfortable in my shirt pocket, but unless you can find an older, thinner version with the onion skin paper, this is the best you can do. I do have concern that the newer, thicker paper might not wear as well. The onion skin paper seems to hold up better in my 50 year old Bible, and I wonder if this new paper will be as durable. (I guess I'll find out in another 30-50 years)

This edition (4th) has a plasticized cover so it won't break down like my 30 year old copy. It also has more entries under each word. For example, a common verb like the English "run" has dozens of definitions. It would be impossible to list them all in a pocket dictionary, but the latest editions have more than the earlier editions. This makes it more likely to get an accurate translation of a word. This edition also has better explanatory pages listing verb conjugations and the like. Unless you could already conjugate "ser" - "to be" - how would you otherwise know that "seja", "fui", and "foram" were all forms of "ser"? However, the dictionary still only lists "see verb ser" under these conjugations. There is plenty of room on the line next to "fui" to define it ("I was") rather than just refer to another page. But it continues to improve over the years.

For more formal translation work, or to use on archaic literature, I use a more complete dictionary - Novo Michaelis. Its 2 volumes are about 18 inches thick and anything but portable, however.

I recommend getting books from the US or Europe, rather than Brazil. Brazil, though fairly literate, has the lowest number of bookstores in the developed world per capita. This lack of a market means that the in-country publications are of poor quality and poorly edited and proofread. I rarely saw books in a Brazilian home unless they were schoolbooks, sciptures, pornography or in a teacher or intellectuals house. Lately, Brazilian publishers have taken to just publishing crooked photocopies that are often unreadable in their books and it can be difficult to even find a brand new book that doesn't already have a broken binding or loose pages.

For travel, or ordinary translation needs, this will serve quite well, and though I am quite fluent in Portuguese, I still use this most often when I need help to translate some literary word I have forgotten or never learned. Highly recommended from this user of 30 years.

2 out of 5 stars Too tiny to see!.......2004-05-25

This is a VERY tiny dictionary, which makes it very difficult to read. It also is geared toward British English, which further limits its usefulness for American readers. It is compact and plastic bound, which does make it a true "pocket sized" book, but if you are looking for readability and overall usefulness, I would look a bit further.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of words and definitions, great price!.......2004-02-05

I was quite impressed by this tiny dictionary. I am currently in 4th semester Portuguese at a university, and so far this dictionary has been all I needed. Unlike some dictionaries that privide only one definition for the word, this one gives the commonly used synonyms as well (in both English and Portuguese). You can't go wrong for the price!

5 out of 5 stars Best I've found for travel.......2003-11-09

This dictionary has two major virtues: (a) it is really small, (b) it's not paperback, but rather "plasticback": the jacket is of a reasonably resistant plastic material. I haven't found any dictionary of similar size that is as solid. Thus, this is the dictionary I take in my travel backpack.

I haven't really pondered whether it's as good as the alternatives in terms of entries and such; but I just don't have to worry as much about its getting destroyed in transit.

                          Book Description

In the history of mankind, few scientific phenomena have so profoundly changed the human experience as will the revolution in the use of DNA technology. Entertaining, informative, and written in plain English, The Genomics Age explores how recent leaps in the understanding of DNA offer astounding scientific promises -- and pose complex ethical issues.

The Genomics Age probes the fundamental questions borne of advances in applied DNA science: Can we finally conquer cancer -- once and for all? Will we ever bridge the ideological and political divides in the stem cell debate? Does the rush to develop anti-aging drugs mean we are on the verge of finding the fountain of youth? As we genetically eliminate disease and pick and choose the attributes of our children, will knowing the code of life change what it means to be human?

This groundbreaking work also discusses the rapidly expanding use of DNA technology to solve crimes, the business of genomics, and the implications for the economy and the investment community.

As society grapples with the enormous challenge of a truly new frontier, we must all educate ourselves about the "what," even as we seek to answer the infinitely larger question of "why." The Genomics Age is the perfect place to begin.

Gena Smith's new book, "The Genomics Age," is a clear guide that explains in layman's terms the current hot topics in the scientific world. Though not a scientist, Smith is well-known as the former technology correspondent for ABC and her radio shows. The book is a great guide to the debate on stem cells that's all over the news, and she writes wonderfully on the possible applications in the future of genomics and stem cells.

This book is an excellent demystifier for all the gene, genomics, and DNA topics in the news. It discusses bioethics and the ramifications and consequences of the "genomics" revolution coming about in our world. This book will give you a good understanding of things like what it means for the government to keep a database of DNA and other bio-features. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book a couple years back when a friend recommended it. I haven't ever taken so long to complete a book but finally, last week, two years later, I completed it.

I had never made it past 5 pages without falling asleep; thanks to this book, my sleeping medication is something I haven't had to take in a long time. I am very very upset that this book is done... Now, I have to read chapters at a time of other books to feel as tired as I do with this one.

Seriously, most of this review is 100% true. This might be a very good history book of DNA research but it's about as much fun as having a root canal while being gang raped in a prison shower. If you have to read this book for some reason, I suppose it is filled with the facts. If you don't have to read this book... Well... It's not much fun. Oh, there are lots of very BIG words though.

I am not an expert in the field of genetics, nor in biology and related fields. Yet, I am generally interested in such things. Gina Smith's book solves my problem of not being able to read cutting-edge research and not wanting to continually gather articles from magazines and newspapers (because genetics is only _one_ of my interests.) I felt like I learned a lot and recalibrated my expectations of what is possible with the insights of this field.

                          5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Thought-Provoking Book!.......2005-02-14

I have to say that I loved this book. It was one of the most entertaining & clear books about science I have ever read.

Like many people, I took science classes at High School and University. But, I only remember some tidbits of what I studied...certainly not enough to have an intelligent conversation about the discoveries taking place with Genomics today. I had also read through scientific articles on the Human Genome Project, but just wasn't able to piece it all together.

Gina Smith's book, however, gave me a thorough and clear understanding on the meaning of the Genomics Age, on how genes predispose you to cancer or fat or other diseases. In plain English, Gina Smith helps give insight into what is happening today and what we should be paying attention to in the near future.

And most importantly, Gina Smith's writing style is enjoyable and delightful to read. It was the best of both worlds -entertaining and thought-provoking.
