Evan Schwartz has done an extraordinary job on a fascinating subject; Juice is a real page turner. If you ever wondered how world-class inventors go about their work, how they channel their ideas, or even how they acquire new ones, you've got to read this book.

In itself, the book is a collection of stories about the best minds, and their successes and failures. However, Schwartz also uses each example to outline broader themes and to provide a bigger picture of the landscape: importance of analogies and pattern recognition, the value of building systems, identification of barriers, role of serendipity, and many others. Even if you're not interested in 'invention' per se, the stories are worth reading on their own; this book got my own 'juice' flowing like no other. An easy 5/5.

I am reading 'Juice - The creative fuel that drives world class inventors' by Evan Schwartz. The book gives insights into how creative people come up with inventions by creating possibilities, pinpointing problems, detecting barriers, applying analogies and embracing failures. The stories about how some of the inventions came about are really interesting. Schwartz goes inside the minds of some of the greatest inventors, delves into their stories and explores how they thought up their inventions

5 out of 5 stars Page turner!.......2006-04-19

This book was a sheer delight to read. I am very interested in the process of inventing. I have read a lot about innovation strategies and the creative process so I thought this book would bore me. Anything but. I found it enlightening, exciting, fun, .... I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and instructional.......2006-01-19

A great read. I found myself constantly jotting notes in the margins as I read it because it caused me to think of new ideas in my business.

I find many business books suffer from having 20 pages of content that they fluff out to 200 pages to justify the price. In this case, I didn't want the book to end.

I highly recommend Juice.

      Book Description

The main thrust of this book is to address a number of manpower issues vital to the development of the Persian Gulf region. By taking a long-run perspective, the study creates a framework for the development of future manpower policies in the key countries: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Iran, and Iraq. The past policies in the region of growth-related investment, industrialization, and economic development should not be given priority over development-related human resource issues. Furthermore, the pressing need to accommodate demands for more highly skilled national manpower should not occur at the neglect of the region's culture and values.

          Book Description

The nine essays presented by John R. Wunder collectively expose the domestic and technological details of American pioneer life on the High Plains. The essays, each written by a leading authority in the field, examine such topics as early ranching and farming in the Rio Grande Valley and the Staked Plains; the impact on Native American and settler women of life on the agricultural frontier; the response to perceived threats by agriculturalists after the Civil War; and the agriculturalists' entry into the twentieth century via their response to cultural change. The final chapter, a speech made in 1890 by a Scottish traveller, contains a contemporary observation of the real and mythical qualities of life on the frontier.

              Book Description

Today the world is facing a greater water crisis than ever. Droughts of lesser magnitude are resulting in greater impact. Even in years with normal precipitation, water shortages have become widespread in both developing and developed nations, in humid as well as arid climates. When faced with severe drought, governments become eager to act. Unfortunately, this eagerness usually wanes when precipitation returns to normal. Drought and Water Crises: Science, Technology, and Management Issues explains the complexities of drought and the role of science, technology, and management in resolving many of the issues associated with the world's expanding water crises. Contributors discuss a broad range of topics in attempting to answer these most pressing questions: How can we can improve planning tools and make mitigation tools more readily available and adaptable? How can we promote widespread adoption of new water-conserving technologies and encourage their use during non-drought periods? How can seasonal forecasts and early warning systems be made more reliable and expressed in ways to better meet the needs of end users? How can the drought-related policy experiences of some countries be systematically utilized to benefit others? Drought and Water Crises collates considerable information from diverse disciplines with the goal of reducing societal vulnerability to drought. Featuring case studies and stressing new technologies, the book seeks to encourage nations to adopt a more risk-based, proactive policy for water and drought management.

5 out of 5 stars Prime Ski Racing.......2001-05-16

I highly recommend this book to young ski racers and their parents. My 13 year old first year J3 son read PRIME SKI RACING this winter and it seemed made a significant difference in his both his skiing, his race results, and his ability to enjoy the ski racing season right to the very end. Granted, he also has great coaches. I feel the book also helped him approach the manner in which he prepared for his races in a more oragnized and methodical manner. Apparently, though, PRIME SKI RACING is not just for young racers, as Dr. Taylor has had success even with the big boys (and girls) at the World Cup level.

Furthermore PRIME SKI RACING is logical and easy to read. Some of Dr. Taylor's ideas made such good sense that I found myself saying, "Gee, I could have thought of that." It was also obvious that just about everything that Dr. Taylor wrote about the mental approach to ski racing, could also be applied to not just other sports, but to just about any other endeavor in life. I gather Dr. Taylor has written similar books about the mental approach to business and child rearing. I am going to check them out.

Starting in 1965 and spanning a ten-year period, a group of writers including Tom Wolfe, Jimmy Breslin, Gay Talese, Hunter S. Thompson, Joan Didion, John Sack, and Michael Herr emerged and joined a few of their pioneering elders, including Truman Capote and Norman Mailer, to remake American letters. The perfect chroniclers of an age of frenzied cultural change, they were blessed with the insight that traditional tools of reporting would prove inadequate to tell the story of a nation manically hopscotching from hope to doom and back again—from war to rock, assassination to drugs, hippies to Yippies, Kennedy to the dark lord Nixon. Traditional just-the-facts reporting simply couldn’t provide a neat and symmetrical order to this chaos.

Marc Weingarten has interviewed many of the major players to provide a startling behind-the-scenes account of the rise and fall of the most revolutionary literary outpouring of the postwar era, set against the backdrop of some of the most turbulent—and significant—years in contemporary American life. These are the stories behind those stories, from Tom Wolfe’s white-suited adventures in the counterculture to Hunter S. Thompson’s drug-addled invention of gonzo to Michael Herr’s redefinition of war reporting in the hell of Vietnam. Weingarten also tells the deeper backstory, recounting the rich and surprising history of the editors and the magazines who made the movement possible, notably the three greatest editors of the era—Harold Hayes at Esquire, Clay Felker at New York, and Jann Wenner at Rolling Stone. And finally Weingarten takes us through the demise of the New Journalists, a tragedy of hubris, miscalculation, and corporate menacing.

This is the story of perhaps the last great good time in American journalism, a time when writers didn’t just cover stories but immersed themselves in them, and when journalism didn’t just report America but reshaped it.

“Within a seven-year period, a group of writers emerged, seemingly out of nowhere—Tom Wolfe, Jimmy Breslin, Gay Talese, Hunter S. Thompson, Joan Didion, John Sack, Michael Herr—to impose some order on all of this American mayhem, each in his or her own distinctive manner (a few old hands, like Truman Capote and Norman Mailer, chipped in, as well). They came to tell us stories about ourselves in ways that we couldn’t, stories about the way life was being lived in the sixties and seventies and what it all meant to us. The stakes were high; deep fissures were rending the social fabric, the world was out of order. So they became our master explainers, our town criers, even our moral conscience—the New Journalists.” —from the Introduction

A sharp, respectful, well-informed overview of one of the richest epochs in American literature. The sketches of a young, hungry Hunter Thompson are particularly memorable. Loses a point for neglecting Terry Southern.

So they became our master explainers, our town criers, even our moral conscience—the New Journalists.” —from the Introduction

                4 out of 5 stars more than i expected.......2007-01-03

this book is more than just about wolfe, thompson, breslin, or didion. it takes you from the beginnings of the tribune, through esquire, through new york, up until rupert murdoch bought it all up, along with fantastic insight into what made the "new journalists" who they were, how thier styles evolved. i only gave the book 4 stars because it seemed a bit dry in some places, almost too detailed, and to me i had brief moments where it dragged, but overall, the book is definately worth reading. as already stated, this book makes you want to be a journalist. the author's enthusiasm comes through in the words, and the snippets he gives from articles, used to illustrate a point, highlight the wordcraft of breslin and wolf and all of them, who were reporting in a way that hadn't been done before. well written, interesting, it puts you right there in the middle of everything happening, by the time i was done, it felt like i had sat alongside normal mailer and hunter thompson while they got thier stories. i would reccommend this book to anyone interested in the "new journalism" and make it mandatory for anyone who wants to be a journalist.

                5 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost.......2005-12-02

On the back cover, Chuck Klosterman writes that "if this book doesn't make you want to be a journalist, nothing will." While I absolutely agree with Klosterman's high praise for this excellent book, truth is, Weingarten has written an elegy for something that's been lost in today's journalism. Reading The Gang that Wouldn't Write Straight brought home to me just how far we've gotten from the spirit, the energy, the chutzpah, the adventurousness of the years Weingarten describes. And that's not to suggest any criticism of the author -- just the opposite, in fact. Weingarten is a true historian of era, and he has beautifully captured not only its hopes and promises, but also its disappointments and betrayals. Maybe Klosterman's point is that Weingarten has given us as a timely, needed, reminder of what journalists should aspire to. Not everything the so-called New Journalist wrote is first rate. Always, though, they had the right spirit of adventure about theiw work. Journalism was alive for them in a way that it's not now. Weingarten inspires journalists today to breathe new life into the profession. And his own effortless prose is a reminder of what good writing is all about in any era.

                  Book Description

If you were to spend just fifteen minutes each day gaining one new sales idea or sharpening a skill, within just a few years you could become an industry leader. THE EIGHT COMPETENCIES gives you the simple essential elements for your self-directed performance improvement. As you grow your knowledge base, you will gain self-mastery. This competency based book involves the incorporation of "emotional intelligence" into your sales career as well as the profit-focused "hard-skills."

Jim Cathcart's sales philosophy is quite simple - Business should be practiced as an act of friendship, rather than merely as a process of negotiation. It is about connecting with people profitably, not merely persuading them to buy.

3 out of 5 stars A Loose Compendium of Sales Techniques and Cliches.......2007-09-27

It is clear this book is the product of years of sales training seminars for two reasons: (1) Cathcart discusses selling from a multiplicity of angles, and (2) the text reads like a loosely compiled sales handbook; failing to articulate and sustain a main argument throughout. In the author's defense, he warns the reader of this much in the introduction and opening chapter. Nevertheless, the book would benefit only those looking to reference and sharpen certain aspects of the selling technique. Even then, the book strays too often from giving technical insight into giving a pep talk. The work also suffers from an inordinate number of lists, which leads one to feel he is reading the minutes from a brainstorming session. For this reason it does not deserve the high ratings it has been given by other reviewers thus far.

There could not be a better time for a sales force to soak in all that Sales GURU Jim Cathcart has to say. Relationships are built in tough economic periods. This book details the basic steps each sales person should follow, and offers sound (not soft) motivation for reaching the top. Every sales rep n our firm has a copy.

                  5 out of 5 stars I'm the author.......2002-11-12

Of course, I'd give myself five stars but here's why: this book is the result of 17 years of experience with my earlier book: Relationship Selling, How to get and keep customers (now in print in English, Japanese, Chinese and Finnish.) I've applied these principles and refined the process over 25 years with 2,000+ clients around the world.
The format of the book is HTML, you can jump directly to the idea you need rather than reading in linear fashion. Take the Sales Readiness Assessment on page 15 then go directly to what you feel you need most right now.
I've filled the book with cartoons, graphs, exhibits, case studies and checklists to make it fun to learn and easy to retain. Enjoy your read and let me know if you need more.

                    Book Description

A tangible aspect of living, working, and traveling in the 21st century is the experience of moving between smoke-filled and smoke-free environments. In Globalizing Tobacco Control, Roddey Reid examines what lies behind this experience: the revolution in public attitudes and health codes that regulate daily routines and the life of the body. While the gradual replacement of smoking with non-smoking as the social norm is a global phenomenon, it has not followed the same trajectory everywhere. Reid compares anti-smoking campaigns in the United States, France, and Japan for what they reveal about the nature of globalization and liberal arts of government. He explores distinctive national histories of tobacco; evolving global marketing strategies of transnational tobacco corporations; "social marketing" techniques used to tailor public health messages to particular ethnic communities; and the programs of international public health organizations.

                    Book Description

`Coffey's insightful book promises to make a critical contribution to the literature on the automobile industry. The book lucidly brings together original research, literatures in the economics and sociology of production, and innovative analysis. Coffey has written a book of exceedingly high calibre.' - Sarah S. Lochlann Jain, Stanford University, US

`The last thirty-five years has seen the emergence of the doctrine that the Japanese motor industry was super-efficient leading to unmatchable average unit costs of production. At the same time the 1990s saw most Japanese car and truck companies hitting stormy waters and most falling under the control of foreign vehicle companies. This fine book explains this paradox and confirms the view of some that the Japanese vehicle firms were not as special as they were made out to be. For those wishing to separate the myth and reality of the Japanese car and truck industry this book is a "must read". There is no longer a "Japanese" threat, but there may be a Toyota one. Read this book and see why.' - Garel Rhys OBE, Cardiff University, UK

`An original and provocative thesis which casts the "lean" and "flexible" in an entirely new light - a challenging study of myth making in a globalizing world.' - Ulrich Juergens, Social Science Research Centre Berlin, Germany

`This is an important book about a big subject: Dan Coffey makes the case for this development of a "production fantasy" around the Japan car industry. Dan is an unusual economist: one who takes production seriously, actually seeks to observe what goes on, and understand it. He is ingenious and his empirical work is first rate. An original contribution of great significance.' - Keith Cowling, Warwick University, UK

Combining case studies with accessible but rigorous production models and historical background, this provocative book challenges accepted views on Japanese production methods in the world car industry.

The book argues that the `lean and flexible' production model popularly associated with Toyota MC is a myth, but one which sheds light on cultural responses to the attendant stresses of globalization. To illustrate this, Dan Coffey provides individual studies of process flexibility, labour productivity and the re-organization of work in the global car industry. Wider evaluations of Japanese impacts on the global economy and a resurgent Western capitalism are then made, progressing the case for a fundamental re-assessment of the narratives informing popular accounts of Japan's manufacturing success. Beginning with the fictionalization of history and propagation of empirical counterfactuals and finishing with observations on the wider impact of the `lean and flexible' approach, the bold and controversial conclusion reached by the author is that what is at stake is our understanding of the form and meaning of `production fantasy'.

The Myth of Japanese Efficiency casts a familiar debate in an unfamiliar light. It will strongly appeal to management and business strategy academics, political economists and industrial sociologists interested in the debate on Fordist versus `post-Fordist' production methods/`lean and flexible' manufacture and Japanese post-war success in the world market for manufactured goods. Human resource management specialists interested in best production practice will also find much to interest them within this book.

4 out of 5 stars Debunking some of the lean myth.......2007-04-04

Quote from page 4 - "It will be argued that the assumption that Toyota and other Japanese car assemblers led a break from 'Fordist' mass production of standardized models is historically counterfactual, and that this branch of manufacturing history has been subject to a collective process of fictionalization..."
The author very carefully disassembles the main premise of Womak & co's book "The machine that changed the world". He goes further to debunk Womak and Jones book "Lean Thinking".
While the main thrust is to show that critical claims led by Womak and co are historically inaccurate, the author fell short in several areas that show have been addressed while he was debunking his two central targets (hence only 4 stars).

                      Book Description

Evolving for centuries in relative isolation, sport in Japan developed a unique character reflective of Japanese culture and society. In recent decades, Japan's drive towards cultural and economic modernization has consciously incorporated a modernization of its sports cultures. Japan, Sport and Society provides insights into this process, revealing the tensions between continuity and change, tradition and modernity, the local and the global in a culture facing the new economic and political realities of our modern world. The book explores three broad areas of interest:

                      · sport and modern society in Japan
                      · current issues in social reconstruction and reproduction through sport
                      · modernization, globalization and sport in Japan

Providing unprecedented access to new work from Japanese scholars, and raising key questions of globalization and cultural identity, this text represents a fascinating resource for students and researchers of sport and society.

Globalizing Japan explores the social and cultural dimensions of Japan's global presence. Japan's expansion and presence as an economic giant is witnessed on an everyday basis. Both consciously and unconsciously, we regularly come into contact with Japan's industrial and cultural globalization, from cameras and automobiles to judo, cuisine or animation. Japan's presence in the popular imagination is heavily influenced both by the country's historical past and its global present. This book will appeal to students and scholars of Japanese Studies, Anthropology and Cultural Studies.
