    Book Description

This text exhibits four unique features: 1) it uses the theory of the firm as the unifying theme to examine the managerial decision process; 2) it fully introduces a global view into managerial economics to reflect the internationalization of tastes, production, and distribution in today's globalizing world; 3) it introduces many exciting new topics and managerial tools into the study of managerial economics that are not discussed at all or discussed only very superficially in other texts, such as firm architecture, strategic behavior, business ethics, electronic commerce, risk management, international economies of scale, the virtual corporation, reengineering, benchmarking, the learning organization, and the digital factory; and 4) it shows how managerial decisions are actually made today with more relevant and interesting real-world case applications and integrative case studies than any other text on the market.

          Book Description

This hands-on kit contains everything managers need to put the strategies presented in The Boundaryless Organization into actual practice. Based on the renowned WorkOut process initiated at General Electric, this complete resource offers specific guidelines for facilitating dialogues that result in rapid, significant change. Practical tools include PowerPoint slides that reinforce key concepts, a diagnostic questionnaire for assessing your current boundaries, and exercises that apply boundaryless thinking to real-life scenarios. A leader's guide to WorkOut, process mapping, customer-supplier projects, and the employment of technology is also included.

5 out of 5 stars Most Boundaries Are Self-Imposed.......2002-02-24

The title is a misnomer: Although the authors do indeed suggest how to "break through the chains of organizational structure", they provide an enlightening explanation of four different types of boundaries (vertical, horizontal, external, and geographic) which give definition to any organization. They do not advocate the total elimination of these boundaries (which is impossible, anyway); rather, they suggest how to rearrange them so that an organization can thrive. For the authors, there is what they call "A New World Order":

"In living organisms, membranes exist to give the organization shape and definition. They have sufficient structural strength to prevent the organism from dissolving into an amorphous mess....Like a living organism, the boundaryless organization also evolves and grows, and the placement of boundaries may shift....Because the boundaryless organization is a living continuum, not a fixed state, the ongoing management challenge is to find the right balance of boundaryless behavior, to determine how permeable to make boundaries, and where to place them."

This brief excerpt from the first chapter correctly suggests the purpose of this remarkable book: To explain HOW to meet that challenge. The material is presented within four parts plus a conclusion. The first explains how to achieve "free movement up and down" by crossing vertical boundaries; the second explains how to achieve "free movement side to side" by crossing horizontal boundaries; the third explains how to achieve "free movement along the value chain" by crossing external boundaries; and in the fourth part, they explain how to achieve "free global movement" by crossing geographic boundaries." Then in the Conclusion, the authors discuss "Making It Happen: Leading Toward the Boundaryless Organization." The authors also include a series of six questionnaires. By completing each in sequence, the reader is able to determine (a) where her or his organization is now located relative to "the boundaryless paradigm", and (b), what is needed to eliminate the "gap" between where it is now and where it should be.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to read The Boundaryless Organization Field Guide. It contains a wealth of hands-on set of diagnostic instruments, exercises, and tools as well as a disk with presentation slides in Powerpoint format.

The fieldbook is written in a very user friendly way. It provides information that can be used in various ways - presentation slides, workshops, surveys and inteviews. Each tool is explained in great detail - how to use it and the intended purpose. I borrowed a copy from our corporate libary and liked it so much I will order my own personal copy!

The Evangelistas have created another volume full of inspiring life experience and helpful how-to info dished up with a generous helping of humor. I recommend this book.

This is a "status report" based on the presentations and discussions which took place during the 14th Annual Workshop on Computer Simulation Studies in Condensed Matter Physics at the Center for Simulational Physics at the University of Georgia in February 2001. It provides a broad overview of the most recent advances in the field, spanning a wide range of topical areas in simulational condensed matter physics. These include recent developments in simulations of classical statistical mechanics models, electronic structure calculations, quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and simulations of polymers. New physical results and novel simulational and data analysis methods are presented.

              3 out of 5 stars Not a manual.......2007-09-09

The book is inspiring and would make anybody buy a scull.
But since I already got myself an intermediate half a year ago I was hoping for a more up to date book more like a manual.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, easy to understand........2007-07-21

This book is easy to read, covers all the basics and some areas beyond. The author explains how best to start out and why and continues on to cover the techniques important for the beginner. All in all a very good book for anyone considering taking up single sculling as a sport.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every devalued American dollar & more.......2004-12-01

I have read & sold other books, but not this one, because it bears reading several times, like having a coach. It reads well in a font size that I (at age 47) found easy to read. Boyne does a good job addressing equipment, rigging, rowing technique, boathandling skills, training and troubleshooting tips.

I refer to this book between sessions on the water. The book does not substitute for time in the sliding seat--in the beginning, I committed errors that threw me into the water or that made release & catch of the oar blades messy. The book, and time spent with an accomplished fellow rower, helped clean up these errors.

3 out of 5 stars Good not great.......2004-08-24

If you're only buying one book I'd recommend "The Sculler at Ease" by Frank Cunningham. Cunningham's book is more dated (with regard to equipment) and quirkier, but will teach you more about the sculling stroke.

              4 out of 5 stars Great book...but no grail..........2002-07-19

I recently took up sculling and very much enjoyed this book. Honestly, I don't know if the book would be that beneficial to someone with years of experience, but from my point of view it was a great primer for training, and working on technique, etc.

I think for readers looking for some sort of Holy Grail...my guess there really isn't one. Just get out on the water and do it.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Book for Anyone Who Loves Books.......2007-08-28

I came to this wonderful book from a very circuitous pathway: I had gone on Barnes & Noble's website to see if they offered classes in their "online university." I am sorry to report that they have done away with the university concept, but they now sponsor chat boards about different book topics. Looking around, I wandered into the one on "Collecting Books." Although I was familiar with the idea that first editions can be valuable, I really know nothing about collecting books for fun or profit. While on the site, I asked the moderator if he could suggest any beginner's books to collecting, and this is the one he mentioned. (Of course, I purchased the book from Amazon.com!)

What a treasure trove of information. Ian Ellis's "Book Finds" is a great resource, even if you never collect or attempt to sell a single book. His breadth of knowledge about books is astounding, and he highlights so many authors in discussing his topic that, as a booklover, you are sure to find some interesting information or new authors here.

Ellis dispels the idea that collecting books means wading through dusty old volumes. In fact, for the average collector, many of those will be out of their price range. However, what is eminently collectible are "modern firsts," books written within the average reader's lifetime that have value, are likely to maintain or increase that value, and can provide a surprising new way to make money from books. Of course, to do that, an individual must have a good working background in the industry to know what to look for, what has value, and what problems a book may have that will make it virtually worthless to the collector market.

This book offers up an excellent starting point for your journey to collecting, and Ellis devotes an entire chapter to other resources by which to expand your book knowledge. He covers first editions and reader's copies, trends in buying and selling, mistakes that are easy to make (and avoid), and a glossary of commonly used terms in the business. He gives an insider's view of "scouting" as a career, but most of all, he allows his love of books to shine through. I highly recommend this book to any reader, whether you become a collector or not. You will have a much deeper appreciation of those magical objects called "books."

              5 out of 5 stars Book Finds a Find.......2007-07-17

We are using this book as a text for a newly formed "Rare and Unusual Book Club" It is concise and to the point and is easy to read. Since we are very new at assessing books it has been very helpful in showing us what to look for without being overly complex. A good resource.

As a new seller, this book help me tremendously. Everything you want to know about the book business. The name says it all. It is a must read and a must have to set you on the right path to success.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand .......2007-05-13

Book is well-written and easy for the lay person to understand. It has helped me a great deal in learning what is and what is not a rare book. Great for amateur collectors such as I.

5 out of 5 stars Worth It's Weight In Gold!!!.......2007-03-07

Mon Dieu! I may be sitting on a gold mine and didn't even know it until I read this book. I don't consider myself a 'book collector' (that sounds so stuffy!), but rather a total bookaholic book slut. I didn't know how to recognize a 'first edition' from a black cat until I read this book (and let me tell you, some publishers are sneaky and don't print the words 'first edition' on the copyright page---there's a secret code that you'll find out if you read this book). I decided to peruse my books and discovered that I own 40 or more first edititons, many collectible. I promptly gave them the special attention and care they so rightly deserve.

If you love and own books, then you NEED to read this little treasure of a tome. You'll learn how books are born (from ideas to printing) and how to know which books are keepers. I shudder to think how many first editions I may have unwittingly given away!

                  Book Description

...A compelling, real-world story of the trials, transitions and leadership lessons of the call center supervisor...

The new superhero of the workplace is the supervisor. Why?

Supervising employees demands more time, energy, commitment and skill. Supervisors are literally caught in the cross-hairs of senior managers seeking better productivity, stakeholders demanding improved results, employees asserting their needs and customers, always, deserving more. This position mandates a series of skillful maneuvers that few come equipped to handle.

Not by the Seat of My Pants! is a compelling, real-world story of the trials, transitions and leadership lessons of the call center supervisor. It provides leaders, managers and new supervisors an inside look at the interplay of roles, goals and changing expectations that can thwart the efforts of even the most qualified candidates. Through its tips, techniques, tools and practical examples, this book helps readers identify what it really takes to be successful in this high pressure, high stress, high turnover job, and how to create the environment for enthusiastic, productive, satisfied employees. Written as a story, it holds the readers' attention long after the book is closed.

This creative book is enjoyable to read, easy to digest and loaded with wisdom and insight for supervisors, new and old. Bravo!
Brad Cleveland--President and CEO, Incoming Calls Management Institute (ICMI)

It made me re-examine how challenging the new supervisors' role really is--and how so much of the center's success hinges on their ability to transition quickly and avoid the landmines inherent in the job. It's a "must-read" for every supervisor!

                    Book Description

Gene Grossman and Elhanan Helpman are widely acclaimed for their pioneering theoretical studies of how special interest groups seek to influence the policymaking process in democratic societies. This collection of eight of their previously published articles is a companion to their recent monograph, Special Interest Politics. It clarifies the origins of some of the key ideas in their monograph and shows how their methods can be used to illuminate policymaking in a critical area.

Following an original introduction to the contents of the book and its relationship to Special Interest Politics, the first three chapters focus on campaign contributions and candidate endorsements--two of the tools that interest groups use in their efforts to influence policy outcomes. The remaining chapters present applications to trade policy issues. Grossman and Helpman demonstrate how the approaches developed in their monograph can shed light on tariff formation in small and large countries, on the conduct of multilateral trade negotiations, and on the viability of bilateral free trade agreements. They also examine the forms that regional and multilateral trade agreements are likely to take and the ways in which firms invest abroad to circumvent trade barriers induced by political pressures.

The articles collected in this volume are required reading for anyone interested in international relations, trade policy, or political economy. They show why Grossman and Helpman are global leaders in the fields of international economics and political economy.

                          Book Description

The contributors to this volume, economists and political scientists from academic institutions, the private sector, and the Ways and Means Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, came together to discuss an important topic in the formation of U.S. international trade policy: the representation of constituent interests. In the resulting volume they address the objectives of groups who participate in the policy process and examine how each group's interests are identified and promoted. They look at what means are used for these purposes, and the extent to which the groups' objectives and behavior conform to how the political economy of trade policy is treated in the economic and political science literature. Further, they discuss how effective each group has been.
Each of the book's five parts offers a coherent view of important components of the topic. Part I provides an overview of the normative and political economy approaches to the modeling of trade policies. Part 2 discusses the context of U.S. trade policies. Part 3 deals with the role of sectoral producing interests, including the relationship of trade policy to auto, steel, textile, semiconductor, aircraft, and financial services. Part 4 examines other constituent interests, including the environment, human rights, and the media. Part 5 provides commentary on such issues as the challenges that trade policy poses for the new administration and the 105th Congress.
The volume ultimately offers important and more finely articulated questions on how trade policy is formed and implemented.

                            Book Description

During the 1970s, organized interests increasingly became involved in lobbying and advising the British government, often even administering public services. Known as "corporatism," this phenomenon involved professional organizations, trade associations, charities, and single-interest pressure
groups, and was frequently the object of public hostility. Although by the 1980s, corporatism seemed to have been repudiated, evidence of corporatism continues. The book is the result of a study undertaken by the Social Science Research Council to investigate the accountability of the organizations
and to determine if corporatism threatens parliamentary government.

                              Book Description

This book focuses on the negative effects of planned price controls and regulation in generating an `underground economy' of black markets, rent-seeking behaviour, and other directly unproductive activities. The author presents econometric models of these effects in partially suppressed and completely suppressed markets.

                                Book Description

Public choice is the study of behavior at the intersection of economics and political science. Since the pioneering work of Duncan Black in the 1940s, public choice has developed a rich literature, drawing from such related perspectives as history, philosophy, law, and sociology.to analyze political decision making (by citizen-voters, elected officials, bureaucratic administrators, lobbyists, and other "rational" actors) in social and economic context, with an emphasis on identifying disparities between individual and collective goals. In Readings in Public Choice and Constitutional Political Economy, Charles Rowley and Friedrich Schneider have assembled an international array of leading authors to present a comprehensive and accessible overview of the field and its applications. Covering a wide array of topics, including regulation and antitrust, taxation, trade liberalization, political corruption, interest group behavior, dictatorship, and environmental issues, and featuring biographies of the founding fathers of the field, this volume will be essential reading for scholars and students, policymakers, economists, sociologists, and non-specialist readers interested in the dynamics of political economy.

                                        Book Description

The multilateral trading system stands at a crossroads. Despite its widely acknowledged contribution to global prosperity over the past half century, the movement toward further liberalization has increasingly been challenged. These essays by leading scholars and trade officials honor Raymond Vernon, one of the architects of the international economic institutions established following the Second World War. The book examines several key issues at the heart of the debate over the multilateral trading system. What are the global efficiency gains from further liberalization? How can efficiency gains be maximized while respecting legitimate claims to sovereignty? Is the trading system affording an equitable distribution of benefits between countries and among various groups within societies? Does civil society have a role in the trading system? What role should the World Trade Organization and its dispute settlement procedures play in resolving disputes and enhancing legitimacy? Contributors include Jagdish Bhagwati (Columbia University), Jeffrey Sachs (Harvard University), Jeffrey A. Frankel (Harvard University), Alan O. Sykes (University of Chicago), Alan Deardorff (University of Michigan), Andre Sapir (Universite Libre de Bruxelles), Robert Howse (University of Michigan), Kalypso Nicolaidis (Oxford University), Robert Keohane (Duke University), Joseph S. Nye Jr. (Harvard University), Joseph Weiler (Harvard University), and Robert E. Hormats (Goldman Sachs). Copublished with the Center for Business and Government at Harvard University
