                Book Description

The sport of ice hockey is going through a transitional period, losing popularity in the United States even as it gains momentum in other countries. The Hockey Dad Chronicles is the touching and funny story of one season in the youth hockey career of Ed Wenck’s son, Oliver, when he played for the Indianapolis Junior Ice. Hockey parents spend an inordinate amount of time and money on their child’s sport of choice — considerably more than soccer, football, or basketball parents dish out. They get their children to the ice rink for 7 a.m. ice time, they travel with them to other states for games every other weekend — and if they’re anything like Ed Wenck, they spend a lot of time sitting in bleachers wondering at the absurdity of it all. As youth hockey grows ever more popular, increasing numbers of parents are seeing their lives taken over by their children’s hockey careers. The Hockey Dad Chronicles will be a familiar, amusing, and moving reminder to them — and to all parents who devote themselves to their children’s extracurricular activities, whether they’re sports, drama, or dance — of what it’s all about.

5 out of 5 stars The Hockey Dad Chronicles.......2007-03-09

I ordered this book about a month ago as a present for my husband. After reading the stories (which are practically like reliving the experiences for any hockey parent), I enjoyed the book so much that I ordered several additional copies that we intend to give out to other 'hockey dads' that are friends of ours.

                5 out of 5 stars Realistic Humor.......2006-09-18

Even tho I'm not a parent of a kid on any type of travel team, every inch of this book was relatable. A fun, and very funny venture through the life of an everyday dad as he supports his son's sporting desires. Every page offered a laugh, and leaves you desperate to see what the next page holds. Very well written.

5 out of 5 stars If you have a kid in hockey READ THIS BOOK.......2006-03-30

Being the father of a former youth hockey player, I REALLY enjoyed this book. I am an avid reader, but this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. So many of the antcdotes in this book stuck home...the endless road trip, the thought of my son as a future NHLer, the incredible cost...all true. And it's all presented in a very readable, and funny, way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone with a child that plays, or wants to play, hockey.

5 out of 5 stars This tape really helped.......2007-01-31

I'm sorry to see so many bad reviews, so I'm taking my first step into cyberspace reviews. I can't speak for the book, but the tape made a real difference in my life. I was painfully shy as a child and teenager and had no clue how to interact with groups until I started teaching myself by observing others at college. I'd gotten better by my mid-20s, but I still dreaded parties where I knew no one or other social gatherings. My attitude was, "I hate small talk, give me something 'real' to talk about."
When I was hired as an executive director of a nonprofit in my mid-30s, I realized I had to teach myself how to work a reception and represent my organization comfortably and competently. This tape gave me the tips I needed, like: Walking in taking responsibility for making others feel comfortable puts you in a better mindset. And seek out the other people who are standing alone -- they'll appreciate you saving them, as they are probably as uncomfortable as you. So - give this a chance.

This books gives great tips and suggestions on how to start conversations. It even give you sample ice breakers. Good book to have and keep around to refresh your small talk skills.

                  Book Description

Priceless Florida presents the incomparable ecological riches of this unique region in a way that will appeal to young and old, laypersons and scientists. A cornucopia of colorful illustrations and exquisite photos makes you feel you're there. The comprehensive text enlightens with facts and brims with intriguing curiosities while bridging multiple fields in a crisp, readable style that only seasoned science-educators like Drs. Whitney, Means, and Rudloe could offer.

The authors enlighten us on every kind of natural area found within the Sunshine State. Imagine yourself trekking into a hammock, slogging through a swamp, floating down a river, strolling along a beach, hovering over a coral reef, or probing the depths of an underwater cave. You'll discover how everything from soils, rocks, water, and landforms shape flora and fauna—and vice versa. You'll also learn how the survival of some of the world's most endangered species and ecosystems hinges on our actions. Much of Florida has been bought and sold many times over, but this book makes clear how its value truly has no pricetag.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Book for All Who Love Wild Florida .......2007-01-12

Speaking as both a native Floridian who cherishes our remaining wild places and as a biologist, I must say that this is probably the best book ever compiled that ties all of our ecosystems together and helps us to understand the importance of maintaining all "the cogs in the wheel". If our state is to maintain any of its natural beauty and "wildness", this book should be looked at as the primer for both amature naturalist and professional alike. The text is easily understood and the photographs are amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Add this book to your Florida must read list.......2006-08-23

This book covers every natural area found within Florida. Within each area it will pick several species and detail how they interact with each other. For example, it goes into the relationship between the fox squirrel, longleaf pine and underground fungi in the high pine grasslands.

The authors present the best explanation that I have read why fire is necessary for the survival of ecosystems and species.

Any Florida resident who reads this book will have a greater appreciation for the natural wonders of their state.

5 out of 5 stars Florida Through The Ages.......2005-08-31

The Orlando Sentinel clued me into this book. I wouldn't normally pick up a book that's overtly scientific. Actually the concepts within are pretty fascinating. It tells how Florida was covered by the sea where layers of limestone built up. Some of the fossil evidence links Florida more to Africa than to the North American continent, but the continents edged apart with Florida separating from Africa. Hey, there's a lot more in this book about Florida emerging from the sea and resubmerging, changes in the ocean currents, how it was affected by the ice ages, and the appearance of "early hominids."

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Florida Ecosystems!.......2005-04-05

As a required text for a wildlife of Florida class, I was obligated to purchase this book. I was overjoyed to see that I was going to get a text book for less than 20 bucks. When it arrived I simply couldn't believe that this book was priced as it was. The pictures alone rival any coffee table book on Florida I've ever see. I could stop the review here and say that for the pictures alone this book is clearly worth the price, however, it isn't just a picture book.

This book is somewhat like another excellent book on Florida ecosystems called "Ecosystems of Florida" by Myers and Ewell. The biggest difference, besides the heavy dose of great pictures, is that the text of this book isn't as detailed nor does it contain the level of scientific data as the Myers and Ewell book. This book is more suited to the newcomer to the environmental field or to someone just curious about Florida wildlife.

The Chapters or units this book is broken down into divide the areas of concentration into an overview of the state, inland communities (uplands, wetlands, and waters), and coastal communities. Each section is further divided into specific ecosystems. Within those chapters dealing with specific ecosystems you'll find a great narrative of the system, numerous illustrations, lots of interesting sidebars, and of course, stunning pictures of the system and its wildlife including plants, geologic formations (where notable), insects, fish, herps, mammals, and birds.

Where this book really shines compared to the Myers and Ewell book (besides the photos) is this book's attention to the wildlife of Florida in both descriptive and photographic form. Not only do you learn about the physical attributes of a system but you get a good overview of the flora and fauna found in the system also. Reading this book is the next best thing to walking through the systems you'll read about.

While not the most detailed book on Florida ecosystems, it provides an excellent overview of them. It is definitely a worthwhile addition to your collection of Florida books and very much a great value at its current price. It is absolutely worth the 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Making decisions at light speed.......2006-02-21

Recent technological advances have made it easier for us to do more in less time. Regis McKenna, chairman of The McKenna Group, asserts that this technology has reset our business clocks to run on real time. Real time isn't just about doing things faster, says McKenna, it's about making decisions and responding to change and customer expectations in the smallest possible amount of time. Businesses cannot remain competitive unless management builds speed into strategic thinking at all levels of the organization. McKenna offers the following tips on managing your company in real time:

                  · Create a Real-Time organizational culture. Make sure employees at all levels of the organization are invested in operating the business in Real-Time.
                  · Offer customers choices, but make it easy for them to choose. Customers must be familiar with the options and the interface must be easy for them to use.
                  · Develop a marketing strategy based on dialogue. Talk with customers instead of at them. Find ways to include input from customers into your products and services.
                  · Give your customers what they want: Service. Use technology to give real time service to your customers. Often customers can use the Internet to service themselves better than you could.
                  · Create an internal network to connect your people. Make it possible for information flow freely and quickly between divisions in your company.
                  · Pay no attention to official productivity statistics. Conventional measures may not be able to capture the kinds of value that information technology has added to industry.
                  · Be prepared to handle anything. Increase your data gathering resources. Use software to synchronize divisions in your organization with one another. Be prepared to learn as you go.

Basically, it says that the world is moving fast, everyone is using the Internet, and that fast is more important than quality. Not worth wasting time with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Not Pedestrian at All--Packed with Insights.......2003-07-10

Below is my review as planned before reading all the negative reviews....everyone brings their own baggage to any book. Following this short review, which was originally written for national intelligence professionals, I have added an addendum with a specific experience in France that illustrates why this book is valuable to anyone willing to take the time to reflect on its fundamentals.

                  ------------------------

This may be one of the top three books I've read in the last couple of years. It is simply packed with insights that are applicable to both the classified intelligence community as well as the larger national information community. The following is a tiny taste from this very deep pool: "Instead of fruitlessly trying to predict the future course of a competitive or market trend, customer behavior or demand, managers should be trying to find and deploy all the tools that will enable them, in some sense, to be ever-present, ever-vigilant, and ever-ready in the brave new marketplace in gestation, where information and knowledge are ceaselessly exchanged."

                  -----------------------

ADDENDUM: In coming to post the above review I noted a number of negative reviews along the lines of "so 1970's", "no new ideas", etc. Naturally any book is going to strike people with different levels of intelligence and experience differently. Our advice to intelligence professionals and managers at any level is to dismiss those other opinions, spend $20 and 1-2 hours with this book, and judge for yourself. Among many reasons why we found this book meaningful, given our focus on global coverage, weak signals, and being effective in 29+ languages, is the following experience:

In 1994, attending the French national conference on information, we heard one of the leaders of the French steel industry discussing a multi-million dollar business intelligence endeavor (in France this includes business espionage and government espionage in support of business) against steel industries around the world. The punch line, however, was stunning. At the end of it all, he said, they failed because they focused only on the steel industry. In the end, the plastics industry ate their lunch because it was able to develop very good plastic substitutes for automobile parts, including automobile under-carriage parts, and this hurt the French steel industry badly. It was from this occasion that we crafted Rule 003 (Book 2, Chapter 15) on the importance of Global Coverage, whose sub-title could be "cast a wide net." McKenna has the basics right.

2 out of 5 stars Really not so good........2002-03-31

Real Time is really not so good. No new ideas or inspiring thoughts. Reading it is a waste of time basically. I gave it two because you always learn something from "getting into" the writers mind.

4 out of 5 stars Merging Technology, Speed, and Customer Satisfaction!.......2000-09-25

Real Time is a tremendous help in understanding that technology, speed, and customer satisfaction have brought a world where action and reaction are concurrent, and sequential actions outdated. Sequential actions are of the modern, 20th century age. Concurrent actions are of the postmodern, 21st century age.

It is a welcome addition to the collection of books that help us think about how our systems have to change in response to technology and speed. As a relatively short book it is a good one to give to people who need a basic understanding of the concepts, but do not need to know all the details.

It also adds to the collection of books that help us rethink our approach to customer service in terms of the use of technology and the speed of response. It helps raise the bar on how we provide solutions to our customers, and not just fixes.

It presses all organizations to anticipate future leaps in technology and relationships so that they are prepared to respond to new needs expressed by many of their customers. At the same time it forces organizations to think about whether they will run on two tracks or one track. The two tracks would be to run with people who demand real time and with people who do not see or participate in the real time transformation. Many organizations need to be prepared to run on one track and leave behind--for mediocre organizations--those customers who do not get it, understand real time, or go digital.

                    Book Description

Right here. Right now. Tailored to me. Served up the way I like it. If the new customers spelled their expectations out on a billboard, then this is what you would read. From the author of Relationship Marketing comes a pathbreaking book on doing business in a real time world-one in which time and distance vanish, action and response are simultaneous, and customers demand instant gratification-or else. Technology is continually transforming our existence in profound ways, and the pace of change is speeding up, not slowing down: we get cash in second at ATMs, we watch wars unfold instantaneously on live television. Almost all technology today compresses to zero the time needed to acquire and use information, to make decisions and initiate actions, to deploy resources and innovate.

                      Book Description

The Annual Review, produced in association with JCMS, the Journal of Common Market Studies, covers the key developments in the European Union, its Member States and applicant countries in 2002/2003. It contains key analytical articles on political, economic and legal issues in the EU by leading experts, together with a keynote article on the future of Franco-German relations in the Union by Thomas Pedersen. The Review is the most up-to-date and authoritative source of information for those engaged in teaching and research or who are simply interested in the European Union. One new innovation, beginning with the 2002/2003 issue, is that the Review 's focus has been widened to include coverage of political and economic developments in the applicant countries that are soon to be full members of the Union.

                        Book Description

This volume centres on the issues surrounding the likely economic impact that EU membership has on joining nations, with the main emphasis on new issues and methods. Given the significantly greater level of economic integration that now exists in the EU, accession brings up a host of issues that either did not arise or were of secondary importance during earlier enlargement waves. For instance, EU membership now entails eventual membership in the monetary union. This raises a series of new issues such as interest rate convergence, exchange rate stability and the loss of sovereignty over monetary policy. Additionally, these macro issues interact with micro issues such as export performance, capital formation and foreign direct investment (FDI). Migration, unemployment and foreign direct investment are further issues that acquire a magnified importance for the prospective entrants. All of these questions are treated in the contributions in Economic Impact of EU Membership on Entrants: New Methods and Issues that should be of particular interest to academics as well as decisionmakers in prospective member countries. Richard E. Baldwin worked for the Institute of International Studies. He was a Senior Staff Economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisors in the Bush Administration (1990-1991) and has advised the European Commission on several integration issues. From 1991 to 2001 he was Co-Director of the International Trade Programme of the Centre for Economic Policy Research. His areas of specialisations are international trade, regional integration, and economic geography.
