      Book Description

The widening gap between the requirements of multinational organizations and the strategic and managerial abilities of their leaders, many of whose core experiences predated the globalization of business, has created the need for this book. Editors Mark E. Mendenhall, Torsten M. Kuhlmann, and Gunter K. Stahl have organized the results of their research--and that of their colleagues in the fields of leadership development, international management, and organizational psychology--for the benefit of scholars and practitioners alike. After surveying current practices to bring the reader up to speed on global leadership development as pursued by the United States, Germany, Japan, and with regard to women in leadership positions, the book's focus shifts to a discussion of effective organizational processes. In the third and final section, contributors analyze the research that has been done on extending human resource management functional practices--such as selection instrumentation, the use of assessment centers, multinational work groups, cross-cultural training programs, and repatriation policies--to global leadership development. The editors define and analyze global leadership and, in their review of the research, clarify exactly what we know and don't know about developing global leadership skills and what it might be profitable to learn. Practitioners will benefit from the contributors well-grounded insights into such issues as the key distinctions between global and domestic corporations, which dimensions of competency transcend internal corporate leadership dimensions, and how global leadership competencies should be developed.

This is a neat book, telling of the author's life on and off an Iowa farm from his birth on Sept 22, 1892, till he finished college in 1917. I was surprised how I was moved by it, tho he is a generation before me. Some of the farming practices he describes (such as threshing from stacks) I only heard about, but others were not too different from when I was a boy in a different part of Iowa. Any one who grew up on a farm or has rural roots will be affected by this book, maybe not as powerfully as was I but it is a very pleasant book to read. The author's few poems (which were published in papers at times) are in the book, and they while not great poetry have a charm which surprises. This volume is a worthy component of Iowa State University Press' Iowa Heritage Collection.

Wilkinson's book was beyound astounding, it was magnificent! The book went beyond normal standards and it reached a higher level of apexes. This book should not only be read in every classroom throughout the U.S., but it should be momrized, analyzed, and loved, because it is truly worth all of that. Wilkinson truly knows how to write and for that, everyone should at least read a chapter.

                Book Description

IAU Symposium No. 168, Examining the Big Bang and Diffuse Background Radiations, took place on August 23-26, 1994 at the XXIInd IAU General Assembly in the Hague, Netherlands.
The meeting attracted a large number - over 250 - of astronomers, reflecting the strong interest engendered by the great advances in cosmology made in recent years. There is still a multitude of unresolved problems in modern cosmology and the symposium offered a wonderful occasion to examine them objectively, at a place where many leading workers in related fields gathered together.
After the introduction by IAU President L. Woltjer and the historical background by Vice Present Virginia Trimble, the volume begins with reviews of the cosmic microwave radiation from COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer). Reviews of recent observations then extend from radio to infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma-rays. It is followed by theoretical models for the Big Bang and Inflation, and alternative views to the Big Bang. Following a discourse on Probes and Future Tests, the meeting ended with a Panel Discussion on `Major Unsolved Problems of Cosmology'. Some forty-four contributed papers - both oral and poster reports - are included after the invited talks and panel discussions.

                      Book Description

This is the story of a couple's travels on a forty-foot trawler cruising 6300 miles and 145 locks around the eastern part of North America known as America's Great Loop or the Great Circle Cruise. Their nautical ineptitude is evident from the beginning, but pulling from their personal and collective strengths, the authors overcome doubt, a lack of experience, and real and imagined horrors. The odyssey is told the way life hands out its adventures -- sometimes humorously, sometimes tragically, but always memorably. The writing is light and appealing, but there is a serious strain running through the book for those who relish history and descriptions of the landscape. Astute and attentive to detail, they chronicled events and kept an account of expenses, equipment and charting. As a result, the appendix/guidebook is worth the price of the book for anyone interested in planning their cruise. Topics include necessary charts and guidebooks, information on locks, sett! ing an itinerary, resource addresses and websites, details on equipment and the best place to be educated about boating. The book has full-color inserts with black and white photographs interspersed throughout.

I recommend this book for those wanting to buy a boat and cruise the loop. There are very helpful details in the last pages that include dollar budget items vs actual with recommendations on insurance to charts etc. The log story of their trip is funny. Worth it.

                      Honey, Let's Get a Boat"
                      by Ron and Eva Stob

Here is a must read for not only boating enthusiasts but all those who ever imagined themselves pulling up stakes and setting out on a year or more adventure of travel. Ron and Eva Stob do a wonderful job of recounting their year-long journey on a forty-foot trawler, which began in Florida and circled up along the intercoastal waterway to New York and then up the Hudson River to Lakes George and Champlain to the Saint Lawrence River in Canada and on to the Great Lakes and Chicago and then down the river systems to the Gulf of Mexico and back to Florida. This route, known as "America's Great Loop," took them through waterways, locks, scenery, history, and cultures as varied as one could find anywhere.

Even though the book is written in the first person by Ron as the narrator, I can assure you, on the basis of having had the good fortune of meeting this delightful couple, Eva had a big part in helping relate the experiences encountered throughout their year of traveling these waterways. The book is a great read from start to finish and includes an appendix, which is a guidebook to anyone contemplating a similar venture. From the interesting and humorous aspects of just how this couple took the leap of quitting their jobs and finding and purchasing the trawler to their final encounter with the tropical storm Gordon,( becoming Hurricane Gordon,) as they returned to Florida after their year of cruising, the reader will be fascinated by vivid descriptions of places and cultures, as well as the difficulties and near disasters. Ron's "tongue in cheek" satire and humor and his honest self-criticism enhance the imagery of the book and bring alive the characters and places.

The book relates as much about the history and culture of the places visited along the way as it does the process of navigating the waterways. Even though I had been to a number of places mentioned, I was not aware of all the history and cultural aspects the narrator reveals.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in travel, by whatever means, as it is just the thing for the intellectually curious.

This book is published by Raven Cove Publishing of Greenback, Tennessee, and can be ordered at Raven Cove Publishing; P.O. Box 168, Greenback, TN 37742-0168 or phone 865/856-7888. The book is also available through Amazon Books on the Internet. And the authors are available for speaking engagements.

                      5 out of 5 stars A delightful read.......2003-04-18

There are lots of technical boating books out there and they are easy to find. This book chronicles one couple's own adventure on the "Great Loop" in their first cruiser, a 40' (wow) trawler. I loved the writing style--great humor and sometimes romantic descriptions of the goings on (Mr.'s descriptions of Mrs., their married kids' near "marital conflagration" on deck, the story of the chocolates, cruising with the senior ladies. The descriptions of the travel are very well written. The experiences aboard will be appreciated by addicted boaters and non-boaters alike. This is an adventure story. When I finally retire and head for the Great Loop in my cruiser, I will think often and fondly of the Stob's and this delightful book.

This is a great little book to pass the time anywhere! I keep it in my purse for those waits at the doctor's office, airport, wherever! The facts in this publication are so much fun to read and to share and they make great cocktail party conversation!

5 out of 5 stars Little Book That Packs a Punch.......2005-11-08

A surprisingly tiny book. (The picture in the upper-left corner is nearly actual size.) After receiving it, I immediately looked up its dimensions in the description on this page. It says 4.7 x 3.3 x 0.6. I had not noticed that before I ordered it. The book seems much smaller than that. Not that that is a problem; it was just somewhat of a shock to find such a minuscule book when I opened the box.

I believe it is intended to be carried with you in your pocket or glove box or the locket around your neck so you'll have a chance to pick out a few choice topics of conversation before you enter a party or whatever.

It certainly is not intended as bathroom reading. For one thing, the pages are much too small for emergency TP use.

Not that I am complaining, mind you. This is a gem of a book with over 200 interesting bits of trivia listed more or less alphabetically from "The Amish" to "Zero". (This is not to imply that the title of each page has much to do with the text, but who cares - the book is fun.)

Each page has its stated "Fact" and a follow-up paragraph to expound on the subject.

Also, there are a number of pages randomly strewn through the book with three "Instant Personalities" each - little tidbits of info about famous people. (Although, Thomas Jefferson got his own page, as did Alfred Hitchcock.)

And unlike another trivia book I purchased recently (Bla Bla), the information here is actually correct. Will and Mangesh research their topics, not just publish un-provable "facts" gathered from the Internet. Use the contents with confidence.

                          Book Description

Strategies for sales success--using the principles of behavioral psychology.

What's the most important factor in becoming a successful salesperson? Is it ambition and drive? Maybe it's enthusiasm. Or, maybe, success in sales just boils down to good old-fashioned hard work.

While all of these things no doubt contribute to sales success, the real key, according to David Snyder, is understanding and knowing how to read different personality types--including one's own. HOW TO MIND-READ YOUR CUSTOMERS, which is based on Snyder's popular seminar, shows readers how to use the principles of behavioral psychology (made easy and accessible) to master the art and science of salesmanship. Using the book's wealth of useful ideas and tools, readers will:

                          * Gain insight into their own personalities * Identify their strengths and weaknesses * Gain a better understanding of themselves * Understand and relate better to others * Size up people as early as the first phone conversation * Improve relationships with customers * Enhance teamwork * Eliminate mistakes in communication * Make a great first impression * Increase sales!

Innovative and empowering, yet down-to-earth and humorous, this book is an invaluable resource on how to take selling skills to the next level.

                          5 out of 5 stars sonia.......2006-06-11

Excellent! Focuses on ethics, good morals, manners and professionalism at first, which are the base for anything in life and than takes you step-by-step thru the technical part which is broken down in very easy explanation. I am a visual person that needs images to better grasp a concept; this book has no images, however the way he explains everything makes it as if it were visual. I strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Read.......2005-03-10

I run a small services business and thought this would be a good book to check out to make sure I was on the right track with my customers. I found the book worth while. I can't say that I am able to mind read anybodies mind any more than I was before I read the book, but I do feel that I learned from the book. I think I understand more about what a customer looks for in a business professional.

I would recommend this to anybody who is interested in enhancing their customer service skills.

5 out of 5 stars DISC for sales.......2004-08-31

I have heard about DISC before but have not read through the concept, so this is actually my first DISC book. DISC is a behaviour profiling, based on an old concept of human behaviour. DISC devide people behaviour into 4 types: D (Driven), I (Influce/Sociable), S (Steadfast) and C (Concientious). D and I are extrovert, and S and C are introvert. This is a commercial type of behaviour analysis that is now widely used.
This book use the bahaviour reading of our customer and custom set our way of treating that customer. In short you should treat certain type of people with similar trait of type to influence them into buying your products.
This book is easy to read, and useful to implement, even if you are not a sales person.
If you like popular psychology applied into business life (books like INFLUNCE in your top liked book) than this one is for you. This is the way we use science of psychology into business life.

It's been very rewarding to read such a book. David must have read my mind as every need I have as a salesman is in this book. He is a great adviser and you can tell he knows how to understand the concept of long-lasting relationships. This is a must read book for anyone who wants to become a better person. To be able to understand people, you have to able to understand yourself.
I have discover myself while reading this book. I hope I get to read more from him!

I felt like dancing a jig while I was reading this book. The author walks the tightrope of coming off as highly experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic without falling 100 feet head first onto the concrete of self promotion. I felt as though I was speaking with a very genuine person about a fascinating subject throughout. Read it!

                              Book Description

In the aftermath of the 1910 Mexican Revolution, Mexican and U.S. political leaders, business executives, and ordinary citizens shaped modern Mexico by making industrial capitalism the key to upward mobility into the middle class, material prosperity, and a new form of democracy-consumer democracy. Julio Moreno describes how Mexico's industrial capitalism between 1920 and 1950 shaped the country's national identity, contributed to Mexico's emergence as a modern nation-state, and transformed U.S.-Mexican relations.

According to Moreno, government programs and incentives were central to legitimizing the postrevolutionary government as well as encouraging commercial growth. Moreover, Mexican nationalism and revolutionary rhetoric gave Mexicans the leverage to set the terms for U.S. businesses and diplomats anxious to court Mexico in the midst of the dual crises of the Great Depression and World War II. Diplomats like Nelson Rockefeller and corporations like Sears Roebuck achieved success by embracing Mexican culture in their marketing and diplomatic pitches, while those who disregarded Mexican traditions were slow to earn profits.

Moreno also reveals how the rapid growth of industrial capitalism, urban economic displacement, and unease caused by World War II and its aftermath unleashed feelings of spiritual and moral decay among Mexicans that led to an antimodernist backlash by the end of the 1940s.

4 out of 5 stars Great overview of the trilateral NA relationship.......2004-02-16

A nice read which should appeal to people interested in NA issues. The book is frequently tongue in cheek and light in detailed analysis but as a quick overview, or snapshot of the current state of the trilateral relationship, it does a good job. The authors have reasonably good research along with some great anectodal evidence which makes for a good read.
