Book Description
Preference falsification, according to the economist Timur Kuran, is the act of misrepresenting one's wants under perceived social pressures. It happens frequently in everyday life, such as when we tell the host of a dinner party that we are enjoying the food when we actually find it bland. In Private Truths, Public Lies Kuran argues convincingly that the phenomenon not only is ubiquitous but has huge social and political consequences. Drawing on diverse intellectual traditions, including those rooted in economics, psychology, sociology, and political science, Kuran provides a unified theory of how preference falsification shapes collective decisions, orients structural change, sustains social stability, distorts human knowledge, and conceals political possibilities.
A common effect of preference falsification is the preservation of widely disliked structures. Another is the conferment of an aura of stability on structures vulnerable to sudden collapse. When the support of a policy, tradition, or regime is largely contrived, a minor event may activate a bandwagon that generates massive yet unanticipated change.
In distorting public opinion, preference falsification also corrupts public discourse and, hence, human knowledge. So structures held in place by preference falsification may, if the condition lasts long enough, achieve increasingly genuine acceptance. The book demonstrates how human knowledge and social structures co-evolve in complex and imperfectly predictable ways, without any guarantee of social efficiency.
Private Truths, Public Lies uses its theoretical argument to illuminate an array of puzzling social phenomena. They include the unexpected fall of communism, the paucity, until recently, of open opposition to affirmative action in the United States, and the durability of the beliefs that have sustained India's caste system.

Clear thinking about issues that many avoid thinking about.......2004-09-24
This book does a good job of analyzing the causes and effects of the differences between public and private beliefs, although it is a bit slow and long-winded.
Much of what the book says seems like it ought to be obvious, but for the most part I hadn't thought very clearly about these issues, and at very least the book persuaded me to clarify my thoughts. He makes a strong argument that some aspects of revolutions are inherently unpredictable, but I'm still trying to decide whether he succeeds in refuting alternative theories that imply factors such as sudden declines in wealth can help predict revolutions.
Fascinating Book.......2003-09-29
This is a fascinating, thought-provoking book that discusses with great skill issues like preference falsification, pluralistic ignore, social psychology, and related topics. It's a great study of why people too often don't do what they believe. The book is very easy to read and strikes a good balance between being based in research and telling a good story.
Why people lie in groups. Strikingly original theory........1997-01-29
Economists, sociologists and psychologists each base their models on underlying conceptions of man: Homo economicus is the bloodless and instantaneous calculator of costs and benefits; homo sociologicus is a product of social stimuli; and homo psychologicus is ruled by conscience.
Kuran has done something quite novel in this non-fiction book- he has melded all three theories into one, and uses it to explain why people often times mask their true opinions in groups.
This is remarkable feat given the relative lack of cross-pollination across these three disciplines. The theory is intuitively easy to grab, yet one yearns for examples which directly connect to his theory. I spent a long time trying to understand what was meant by "intrinsic utility" since it was defined in different ways in different parts of the book.
The chapters are meant to buttress his theory by tackling such issues as revolution, affirmative action, and slavery, but they are not especially well integrated into the first part of the book. In fact, they read more like stand alone articles.
The book is original and thought provoking. There is no other book like it. Those who are not trained in economics will find plenty to talk and mull over in the later chapters. But Kuran could do a better job of explaining the early section with more illustrations.
Hopefully, he will address these concerns in a later edition.

Book Description
Nine years after the publication of Comets and the Origin and Evolution of Life, one of the pioneering books in Astrobiology, this second edition revisits the role comets may have played in the origins and evolution of life. Recent analyses of Antarctic micrometeorites and ancient rocks in Australia and South Africa, the continuing progress in discovering complex organic macromolecules in comets, protostars and interstellar clouds, new insights into organic synthesis in comets, and numerical simulations of comet impacts on the Earth and other members of the solar system yield a spectacular wealth of new results.
This second edition is thus actually a new book. As the first edition it is intended as a comprehensive review of current research, accessible to graduate students and others new to the field. Each chapter was prepared by experts to give an overview of an aspect of the field, and carefully revised by the editors for uniformity in style and presentation.

Comets important in the evolution of biosphere.......2000-11-26
Series of articles considering the role of comets in the evolution of Earth's biosphere. For example, A. Delsemme writes about The Origin of the Atmosphere and of the Oceans. It is argued that Earth's atmosphere and its oceans, as well as much of the carbon found in its biosphere, was brought to the Earth by comets. Although present-day impacts of comets are modest, in the first billion years, and especially first half billion years, of the Earth's existence, a large bombardment of comets occurred, as reflected by the cratering record observed on the Moon, Mars and Mercury. The cometary delivery of matter would explain the siderophile metals in the Earth's crust, and would explain how an ocean and atmosphere remained despite depletion by large body impacts.

Book Description
The papers presented in this volume cover up-to-date information obtained from theoretical modeling, laboratory experiments and space observations. Chapter 1 reviews the knowledge on organic and prebiotic chemistry in small bodies of the Solar System verifying that organic matter has been discovered or suspected in Solar System small bodies, such as comets, asteroids, interplanetary dust grains and meteorites. Chapter 2 covers the many chemical processes of exobiological interest, both organic and inorganic which occur at low temperatures in various space environments, from interstellar matter to planetary surfaces and atmospheres. This includes the abiotic formation of biomolecule precursors, organic refractories and parent molecules, the prebiotic catalytic effects, and the stability of biological systems.

Book Description
Written by well known ecologist, Eugene Odum, this book presents basic ecological principles in a series of vignettes, covering such subjects as population growth, consumption of our natural resources, and resource management. Drawing upon essays written during a forty-year career as an instructor, researcher, and ecologist, Odum introduces new terminology in an unassuming and non-condescending manner. This book is invaluable not only for the student and scientist, but also for the general interest reader.
Selected Vignettes: To Grow or Not to Grow Is Not the Question; The Question Is When Do We Stop Growing Bigger and Start Getting Better Quality in Control of Quantity, the Great Lesson in Evolution Energy, the Common Denominator That Cannot Be Reused The Rising Tide of Maintenance Costs; the Ultimate Limitation The Forest is More Than a Collection of Trees (or the Whole Is Greater Than the Sum of Parts) There are Checks and Balances but no Equilibriums in Nature When Things Get Tough I

A book for general readers by a foremost academic ecologist.......1999-08-16
Dr. Odum, well-known for years in Georgia for his support of sensible social policies as well as his research and teaching of the scientific discipline of ecology at University of Georgia, has now written a book for the non-scientific layman extrapolating certain concepts from ecology and biology into broader human realms. A few chapter titles give the flavor of the book very well...'What we learn from Ecology about Growth'...'Money is a very incomplete measure of wealth'...'When to confront and when to cooperate.'

Good Hiking guide for Families.......2006-06-28
We just got back from our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. This and Frommer's Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons were the books we took with us.
We found this book to be right on target with each of the hikes we took. We appricated the overviews and descriptions of each of the hikes.
Traveling with small children can be a challenge, but this book did a good job at helping us choose which hikes would be enjoyed by all of us. I like how they had a chart of which hikes are good for animal sightings, which for historical value and which for exceptional beauty.
I was a bit disappointed that it didn't cover more aspects of each of the parks and things to do. Though it mentioned such things as horseback riding or rafting, it didn't offer any insight into what would be seen on a rafting trip or riding in the grand canyon of Yellowstone vs. in Roosevelt Lodge (for example). It stuck basically to the hiking trails, which was fine, but the title of the book would be more accurately called, "Hiking With The Family in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons".
I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a good over-all hiking reference for the parks (you certainly don't need kids to appriciate it). It was easy to read, easily formated and easy to throw in a backpack.
Outdoor family guide better.......2006-06-13
I was using an "Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone National Park" and "Top Trails" and I found Outdoor Family Guide to be much more up to date. Several of the trail guides in "Top Trails" were outdated when I actually arrived at the park. After several days in and around the park, my family and I left "Top Trails" in the car and only used the "Outdoor Family Guide." The family guide also proved more inclusive for other outdoor activities besides just hiking. It's a great all around book!
"Top Trails" book is better.......2006-03-08
I purchased this book as well as Top Trails' "Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park" by Andrew Dean Nystrom, and was disappointed with "Family Guide" as compared with "Top Trails". As I am using these books to plan a family vacation, I am especially interested in finding child-friendly hikes. The "Top Trails" book provides a good summary of the hikes (mileage, difficulty, terrain, and activities) at the beginning of the book, an overview missing from "Family Guide".
Amazon.com
The world's first national park remains a premier destination for enjoying the great outdoors with the entire family. Unequaled wildlife viewing opportunities and Old Faithful's clockwork blast continue to delight young and old alike. The park's many rivers and lakes allow access to some of the most pristine and scenic water for teaching the kids how to fish, and on a good day the native--but sometimes guileless--cutthroat trout can be as obliging as fish in a barrel. Large mammals such as mule deer and elk are almost certain to be viewed along the way.
An Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks provides both practical advice and trip destinations with the whole family in mind. Tips on hiking, biking, and paddling with children will lower the odds that you'll end up with an exhausted, unhappy, or hurt child. For example, the Two Ribbons Trail, a very short loop leading to the Madison River and its adjacent meadows, is a great way to introduce young trekkers to the wonders of self-propelled travel. An overview chapter lists visitor centers and museums, and provides specific information on how to access myriad activities--climbing, horseback riding, boating, rafting, and mountain biking--within the parks. The rest of the book offers detailed hiking descriptions, each beginning with at-a-glance details (difficulty, distance, usage, and elevation gain) to help you discern which trails are appropriate for you and your young hiker. For instance, if you'd like to explore geothermal activity at a leisurely pace, choose the Artist Paint Pots trail (rated "very easy") to view these "strange-colored pools and a huge, spitting, burping mud pot." Detailed maps and a smattering of photographs add to this high-quality guide.

No winter topics covered.......2002-03-10
This may be a great book for summer Yellowstone adventurers, but there is nothing mentioned about the beauty of Yellowstone during the winter. So, basically it was worthless and a waste of $$. We just got back from a winter snowmobiling tour, and it was amazing. I would suggest the Moon Handbooks - Yellowstone - Grand Teton National Parks...
Excellent book.......2001-06-12
Lots of good information in this book really helped prepare us for our trip to Yellowstone. Hike information was great and even pointed out when certain trails opened. This was very helpful in planning since we were traveling in May before many trails were open.
The best guide for the Teton Yellowstone area!.......2000-08-16
I purchased this book and several others for my trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone. This book was very informative on lodging, trails, sightseeing and travel. This guide was a time saver as well giving me ideas of the trails and difficulty and estimated time. Many things to do and lots of recommendations for children but its so much more. Definately a keeper and will use next time im planning a vacation to the area. Oh by the way, i do recommend a trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone. The tetons were breathtaking and definately do the trip accross Jenny Lake. Yellowstone, WOW the gysers, wildlife, fishing it was terrific. Have Fun. Jeff
Update: I have carried this book with me to Teton/Yellowston NP the last 5 years and its still releavant even if it is older. This is a great companion book to other more detailed books or newer books available, well worth the $$$....
Fantastic Resource.......2000-07-26
We used this guide almost exclusively during our recent 2 week trip. We took about 7 hikes from the book and we found them to be very accurately described by the author. We were able to find hikes that worked for the whole family. Great book if you plan to travel with kids.
Wonderful Guide - Made Our Trip Fantastic!.......2000-06-24
This was the best book out of three that we purchased. This book is equally good for singles, couples, or families - so don't let the title mislead you. In addition to the great hikes, it also describes several other types of trips - like row boating on Colter Bay in the Tetons. It's well organized and includes good maps and descriptions. I highly recommend this book for anyone planning a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.

great purchase.......2007-10-14
I'm glad I purchased this tapestry coloring book for my daughter when we studied Medieval times. She enjoyed coloring the detailed tapestries and has since noticed the real tapestries every time we go to a museum.
A Nice Coloring Book For Adults........2005-09-08
Adults who enjoy coloring will like this coloring book very much. It has some beautiful tapestries to color, and it gives historical information as well. I suppose that kids might enjoy it, but I doubt they'd truly appreciate the historical aspect of what they were coloring.
Book Description
Who produced the first stage adaptation of "The Wizard of Oz" in 1902-nearly forty years before the movie classic? What entertainment juggernaut began in a converted Chinese laundry on Wells Street in 1959? Where did Louis (Studs) Terkel make his stage debut? When did the original production of "Grease" open at Kingston Mines Theater?
Richard Christiansen, former chief critic for the Chicago Tribune, answers these and many more questions about the rich role of the theater in Chicago, from its earliest days in 1837 to its present state as a diverse community of artists with international stature. In A Theater of Our Own, he draws upon his exclusive interviews, insights, and memories gathered over a period of more than forty years of reviewing the arts. This history and memoir traces the evolution of the Chicago theater scene from small theaters to major institutions such as the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, the Goodman Theater, and The Second City. Along the way, Richard Christiansen relates his behind-the-scenes conversations with some of Chicago's most acclaimed writers, directors, and actors--David Mamet, Frank Galati, Mary Zimmerman, John Malkovich, Laurie Metcalf, Harold Ramis, Gary Sinise, and Joe Mantegna--all a part of Chicago's theater renaissance from the 1970s onward. To this day, Chicago remains a city known for its imaginative, innovative, and influential theaters and artists. A Theater of Our Own, a valuable contribution to the history of theater, is a book written for anyone who enjoys the theater and its people.
Customer Reviews:
The history and the memoir are equally strong.......2006-08-13
Richard Christiansen modestly downplays his role in creating today's amazingly vibrant Chicago theater scene with groundbreaking reviews in the Daily News and Tribune, but that's the only "weakness" in this spectacular history. His research into the earliest days of Chicago theater --150 years ago -- are as vividly realized as those of which he has first-hand knowledge. This volume is a vital resource for understanding the "Chicago school" whose effects have come to touch Broadway, TV, and motion pictures in equal parts.
A story that needed to be told by the best guy to tell it.......2005-04-11
As just about anybody in the Chicago theatre movement will cheerfully tell you, a substantial percentage of the reason Chicago has built a reputation as America's great homegrown theatre city is that former CHICAGO TRIBUNE critic Richard Christiansen had the energy to go to an awful lot of storefronts, basements, churches, galleries and other miscellaneous spaces to find the likes of David Mamet, Robert Falls, Mary Zimmerman, Frank Galati, Laurie Metcalfe, Joan Allen, Amy Morton, John Malkovich and so many of the others who have gone on to make their marks in the theatre. Christiansen puts all this into a coherent narrative and, incidentally and implicitly, suggests what the conditions for such a flowering must be in other cities.
The one thing he (typically modestly) doesn't put as being a necessary ingredient is himself. Critics with his idealism, enthusiasm and decency are hard to come by. Without compromising his pursuit of excellence, he still was able to encourage even when he wrote unfavorable reviews. He also resisted the critics' disease -- to make a quip that draws attention to the critic at the expense of the subject. One of these days, maybe someone will write a companion volume that gives Mr. C. his due, but for the moment this book is splendid and necessary. Anybody trying to make theatre should read it and learn the lessons it contains.
A Comprehensive Theater History........2005-02-10
Written by a movie review expert who spent twenty-five years at the 'Chicago Tribune' as chief critic and arts and entertainment editor until he retired in 2002, he gives the background of early theaters and their demise. The best feature of this study of drama and theater from the early 1830s is the abundance of old photos and playbills interspersed throughout.
Innumerable theaters existed in such a large place as Chicago. McVicker's in the 1850s was considered the 'high class' theater of Chicago, a place for the major stars and shows of its time. Sarah Bernhardt made her Chicago debut there in 1881, which she called the 'pulse of America.' Edwin Booth, son-in-law of James McVickers, mgr., and his brother, John Wilkes Booth appeared there in RICHARD III. Edwin shared acting honors in OTHELLO and JULIUS CAESAR with James O'Neill whose son Eugene wrote about in his drama, 'Long Day's Journey into Night.' McVickers himself appeared as the grave digger in HAMLET. It was destroyed by fire in 1871, again in 1890, to be replaced in 1922 as a movie theater which was razed in 1984 as were so many others across the country.
In 1906, the Majestic (later called Shubert) opened on Monroe St. at Main near the Loop. It's still there in the theater district with five others. In 1959, the Shubert hosted 'The Music Man' starring Forrest Tucker. Shubert has continued in business through the decades, except the Depression years (1932-45). In the 1990s, Mayor Daley decided to revive some of the old money-generating bustle and prestige-garnering glamour of the theater scene downtown. The Shubert is now owned by New York based firms, and will be revamped in 2005, and, after all these years, will sport a new name -- LaSalle Bank Theatre.
An early move toward revival of the Loop area took place in the 1980s. Chicago Theatre (1921) on State Street was threatened with demolition but, after nine months and $25 million investment, it was restored. So were the Palace on Randolph St., and the Oriental (both 1926) all refurbished, back to the French Renaissance splendor as movie palaces.
The old Shubert, I feel, is Chicago's theater above par. I was offered a chance to go inside some of them back in the '90s but didn't have any historical aspect in my life at that same, so let the opportunity pass by. It's wonderful how Chicago was able to do what New York could not with movie theaters.
