Book Description
"Intellectual and political project." Signs
Globalization has a taste for queer cultures. Whether in advertising, film, performance art, the internet, or in the political discourses of human rights in emerging democracies, queerness sells and the transnational circulation of peoples, identities and social movements that we call "globalization" can be liberating to the extent that it incorporates queer lives and cultures. From this perspective, globalization is seen as allowing the emergence of queer identities and cultures on a global scale.
The essays in
Queer Globalizations bring together scholars of postcolonial and lesbian and gay studies in order to examine from multiple perspectives the narratives that have sought to define globalization. In examining the tales that have been spun about globalization, these scholars have tried not only to assess the validity of the claims made for globalization, they have also attempted to identify the tactics and rhetorical strategies through which these claims and through which global circulation are constructed and operate.
Contributors include Joseba Gabilondo, Gayatri Gopinath, Janet Ann Jakobsen, Miranda Joseph, Katie King, William Leap, Lawrence LaFountain-Stokes, Bill Maurer, Cindy Patton, Chela Sandoval, Ann Pellegrini, Silviano Santiago, and Roberto Strongman.

Southwestern Agriculture: Early Corn and R.G. Matson.......2002-02-04
I found this book to be very well written, as one would expect from Matson. The only problem with the book, of course, is that it is slightly outdated. We now have much more information regarding occupation of the Colorado Plateau than Matson did at the time of his writing. This in no way invalidates his work, and I find the fact that he presented three models of the origins of corn agriculture an interesting concept. Of course two of the models were in place prior to his book, and his model of the Maize Development is important. I do recommend this book to all archaeologists who work with early southwestern sites, be they Late Archaic or early Basketmaker. It will also be of interest to anyone who follows Southwestern Prehistory. The book is well written, and easy to read, and I found the side bars with additional site specific information quite useful. We could only hope that Matson will update this book in the future. In the meanwhile, enjoy this work.

Customer Reviews:
Please put out a new edition for the sake of our children.......2004-10-03
This book has been checked out from the library at least 10 times before we found a copy of our own. We also have another David Peters favorite in "Strange Creatures", and can't wait to get a copy of our own. I only wish that someone would put out a new edition of the books, so we could get them new. With the scale pictures, and the wonderful drawings, it keeps our 8 year old reading for hours (and it has since she was 5). If you get a chance to get your hands on one, grab it.
Amazing book!!!!.......2004-02-23
This incredible book first caught my eye in the school library when I was in 4th grade; this same book is now found fascinating by my children ages 6 and 7. The illustrations are beautiful and the text is written in a way that even a young reader would understand. I find it really saddening that the book is out of print, because I would really like to replace the well-worn copy that I have handed down to my kids. Trust me, this is a book that you can certainly pass down for future generations to enjoy (no exageration)!!!!
All People Should Own This Book!.......2003-06-21
This is a book that transcends generational barriers and age barriers in language and content. I got this book when I was eight and the way Peters fluidly coalesced extinct and extant creatures into one book influenced my entire outlook on life! I still refer to the book in university now that I'm an ecology major.
An excellent book on ancient life forms.......2002-11-19
This book, although texted for the 10-15 yer old reader, is excellent enough to be enjoyed by readers of all ages. It briefly examines all manner of large creatures, both extinct and living, and by full-color, scaled drawings, with a man and and woman for visualization, shows how truly huge such things as apatosaurs and blue whales really could be. One of the interesting features is that each and every creature is drawn in the same scale, so such things as triceratops and modern rhinos, and mammoths and elephants and tyrannosaurs, may be compared. You will receive some surprises. I recommend this book to all readers.
Giants of Land, Sea & Air - Past & Present.......2002-02-25
When my boys were in grade school, they LOVED this book. Now they are in high school and college and they still love it! It is filled with wonderful illustrations drawn to scale and an informative easy to read text. A delightful book for all ages.

Book Description
A fresh look at the merciless Red Sox/Yankees rivalry, drawing on history, original interviews with players from both sides, and discussions with partisans of each team among the fans.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Of The Best (The Book Is Good Too!).......2005-04-29
Alright, I admit it. I'm a card carrying member of the Nation. In fact, I'm damn proud of that fact. Being born in Ma, my first words were "Yankees suck." However, before somebody (ahem, Yankees fans) wire my ignition to an explosive, let me say that I found the book, though obviously skewed in the BoSox favor, is an interesting look at the rivarly none the less. A great read, even if you are a Yankees whore... I'm sorry, I meant fan.
The Gospel According to Boston.......2005-04-24
There are people, although I can't imagine why, that would claim that this book is one sided. These are probably people who simply don't realize that damnyankee is one word. They probably don't even realize that this is a battle between the forces of good and the dark side of the force. They might, just might, you understand, even be people who say that this is only a game. I'm told that there are even people who said that who became President was more important, but I clearly don't belie that this is true, there just couldn't be such people.
Well, that's the tone of the book. If you're a Yankee fan (I guess there are still a few out there), you can expect to get your bowels in an uproar by reading this book. If you're a Red Sox fan, well, the book is only simple Gospel fact, with a bit of humor thrown in.
Something for Everyone.......2005-04-18
Whether you are a Red Sox fan or not (and why not?) this book is fun, ingenious and lots of information for baseball diehards. Bill Nowlin and Jim Prime obviously enjoyed putting this book together and it shows with lots of humor and poking fun throughout. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter..they just made me giggle!! Good work! Thanks for sheer pleasure and delight!!
one of a million?.......2005-04-15
There seem to be a million new books on the Red Sox this year. It's probably more like 25. Most are self-congratulatory books that just celebrate the win, and maybe try to cash in on it. I see four or five that focus on the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry. This is one of the best. It seems to do two things at the same time. One, it digs a little deeper than most of the other books, going way back in history and not just the last few years. Two, it's a lot of fun! The authors take it seriously but also have a lot of fun. There are also a lot of interesting features, like ones that look at the trades between the teams and ones that present the stats of players who were both Red Sox and Yankees.
Another good book about this rivalry, though it just features on the last two years, is called A TALE OF TWO CITIES. But BLOOD FEUD is my favorite because it packs in so much information and has a lot of fun doing it.
Comprehensive History of the Red Sox-Yankee Rivalry.......2005-04-15
This book is a rarity: a comprehensive history of two of baseball's greatest teams that is actually FUN to read. It has a slight Red Sox bias in tone, but is scrupulously fair to both teams. You will laugh out loud at some of the commentary, and true Yankee fans will laugh loudest - the way they do everything else!

Un diccionario conveniente y útil.......2007-04-29
Se puede usarlo rápidamente y fácilmente. Este diccionario tiene casi todas las palabras que se necesita en una clase de español avanzada. Tengo diez copias en mi clase.
This is an excellent smaller dictionary for use in advanced Spanish courses. Make sure you understand that it is Spanish ONLY. An exceptional dictionary to keep handy for longer papers, but one that you probably would not want to carry back and forth to class, is El Larousse Pequeño Ilustrado. For students and translators that need an excellent bilingual dictionary for translation, I have seen nothing that compares with the Oxford Spanish Dictionary. I bought a used copy, and I could not be more happy. If anything happened to IT, I would pay full price to replace it immediately.
Great for students.......2007-03-08
This dictionary is great for upper division college students who need a spanish language dictionary to carry to and from school. It has a lot of words and is conveniently sized. The print is somewhat small.
not real helpful.......2007-03-06
I didn't really use it a whole lot. Tried to but it just confused me, borrowed someone else's Spanish dictionary.
Muy Bien.......2007-01-10
No tenía ningún problema con el diccionario.
Es mi primer diccionario que no sirve de traducir de inglés.
(claro, no estoy hispanohablante)
Me sirve bien en clases, y tiene casi todas de las palabras que necesité.
This dictionary was my first dictionary entirely in Spanish (not Spanish-English) and it has served me very well. It had almost all of the words that I needed and yet is small enough to carry to every class. Very handy.
Tiny, tiny print - nececita buenos ojos.......2006-11-04
Well, I guess my title says it all. I needed a magnifying glass to read it, so I cannot comment on the contents. Melita

One of the Better Ones.......2000-04-04
Since Lauren and Dash are my favorite couple in the book, this is one of my favorite in the series. Their on again off again relationship recieves another huge jolt as Tri Beta sorority house burns down. The book is pretty exciting and has a lot more action and tension than most of the other ones in the series. However, the predicatablity of this, like all the other books are a slight drawback. But if you are looking for a fun book that doesn't require a lot of thought, I recommend this along with any other in the series.

In What Clients Love, marketing maven Harry Beckwith offers valuable lessons about capturing and keeping clients. (As Beckwith puts it, "Competence gets firms into the game that relationships win.") Using snappy examples from Absolut Vodka, Kinko's, Starbucks, and Ian Schrager's boutique hotels, he organizes his advice by describing four significant social trends that shape client needs and loyalty. Beckwith's strategies for coping with information overload focus on getting to the point--using a shorter sell and fewer superlatives. He makes a clever and convincing case for giving both testimonials and blurbs the death penalty. He details the decline of client trust with a plan to eliminate cold calls, dress for success, and a spot-on critique of PowerPoint ("Lincoln had no slides at Gettysburg.") Other chapters explore the limits of the Internet and offer nongimmicky ideas about creating a brand, including 20 questions for choosing a name for your business.
Beckwith's advice is fresh, funny, and strategic. He is a master of anecdote and metaphor whose examples range from television's Sex and the City to nihilistic philosopher Nietzsche. Yet the book's clarity is sometimes undermined by its too clever formatting. It's best to enjoy its wisdom one chapter at a time, over coffee. Consider it the caffeine in your cup. --Barbara Mackoff

In WHAT CLIENTS LOVE, Harry Beckwith once again discusses effective business tactics with the practical, down-to-earth style that has made him a bestselling author and trusted marketing expert.Beckwith explains the sheer simplicity of a marketing plan-how to find your company's position, how to define a brand, and how to manage that brand so it has its full and overwhelming impact. With sections such as "Thinking and Planning," "Communicating," and "Serving the Client," Beckwith shows how effective marketers need to be brief, succinct and "cut to the close." WHAT CLIENTS LOVE also reveals the very nature of a service-and why the phrase "pushing the product" itself begins to suggest why this more aggressive approach fails, since you cannot ""push" a relationship, as people know from their failed attempts to do so in non-business relationships.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful.......2007-06-04
This is the most insightful and analytical book about business I have ever read. You don't need to be an MBA to understand and benefit from the well-thought-out and plainly presented message. Anyone who sells goods or services to the public will benefit greatly from this cogent take on the nuts and bolts behind pleasing clients.
A real joy on multiple levels.......2007-04-26
I first read this book shortly after it was published. I just finished my third reading. Each time it gets better.
The book follows the typical Beckwith format. Short, one or two page lessons. You can jump in anywhere in the book ... read for very short periods of time or read for long pleasurable periods. It is well written and contains some of the most succinct lessons on branding, marketing, selling, client attraction and retention that you will find anywhere.
It is not a book to be read once and put on the shelf. You will gain the most value if you revisit it periodically. The lessons are so short and to the point, there is no way you could retain all the information in one reading. You need repeated exposure to the information in this book.
Some of the more valuable lessons are:
A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention. The more there is to hear, the less we listen.
We are drowning in information and screaming for knowledge.
Growing complexity makes us covet the simple.
Say little - a simple point penetrates.
Clarity is expertise.
We are generally more persuaded by the reasons we discover ourselves than those given to us.
Four rules for choosing clients.
Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it will be. Bad clients don't produce minimal results, they produce losses. If a prospect is more interested in cost, you will never be happy and always be vulnerable. You cannot cut a bad deal with a good person or a good deal with a bad person.
Throughout the book, Beckwith cites many books that are well worth reading. At the end of the book is a great appendix that in itself is worth the price of the book.
Well worth reading.
Extremely helpful.......2007-01-18
I'm new to sales, so I'm no expert; but this book seemed perfect. I've listened to it twice and intend to do so a few more times. It's all about putting yourself in your client's place and acting with passion based on belief and purpose. There are also lots of good practical suggestions from how to dress to naming your business.
Well Worth the Money.......2006-12-04
As with most of my reviews, I try to balance the content being provided with the money being invested. This book is a good investment. Lot's of great ideas on how to deal with your customers. Includes good ideas on structuring and operating your business so people will want to be your customers. It also scrutinizes and criticizes many cherished concepts about marketing and tells why these concepts are no longer working. If you are a business owner, manager, or employee, you need to read this book.
Every sales person should read this book.......2006-08-15
Another great book by Harry Beckwith. Three of my favorite pages: "What the best salespeople sell (in order)" and "What ordinary sales people sell (in order)" and "Why hard selling has gotten harder." This is an easy-to-read book with short chapters. A great writing style.

Permission to Think!.......2003-05-14
As a business owner, I've never allowed myself to think. (didn't want to recreate the wheel, ya know.) I read to glean ideas and apply them where I think they might fit.
Wrong, Wrong, WRONG!!!
He emphasizes how important "my" clients are and that I know better than anybody else what my clients love. It took WHAT CLIENTS LOVE to get me to act on that knowledge. My initiative has grown exponentially, because of this book. Bet my business will mirror my ambition now!
His style is not the academic, "I-know-best, nose-up-in-the-air" pontification. He shares his painful bombs, and near-successes too(How he grew!!) His honesty is refreshing and helpful.
This is my first subject from Mr. Beckwith. It will not be the last.

Book Description
Close to half of humanity--2.8 billion people--barely survive on less than $2 a day. The less developed countries often face economic deprivation caused not by state action or inaction, but by the global economic system itself. In addition, basic human rights as guaranteed by international law defined by the United Nations are violated daily. The Global New Deal investigates six key areas central to the achievement of economic and social human rights: the international political economy, the UN, ecosystem protection, racial bias, gender equality, and military spending. The author then introduces what he calls the global new deal, a set of international policy proposals designed to protect the vulnerable and end needless suffering. These structural reforms provide a viable means by which to safeguard social and economic human rights for all.

My favorite professor's book.......2007-01-06
This was written by my mentor in International Relations at Eckerd College, Professor Bill Felice. For everyone at Eckerd who has been lucky enough to have one of Felice's classes, you already know that he and this book are both great. Anyone with an interest in international relations, human rights, etc. should read this book. I also recommend his book Taking Suffering Seriously. They are hard to find at regular bookstores, but I'm excited to see that Amazon sells them both.

Book Description
The WTO is generally seen as a key actor of globalization and, as such, has been the point of convergence of popular irritation worldwide. Many of the reproaches addressed to the WTO show civil societys concern with what is perceived as a democratic deficit in the way the organization operates. The main fear is to see trade rise as the ultimate value, prevailing over concerns such as health and environment. The Role of the Judge offers insight into how disputes are solved at the WTO level, into how the judicial branch interacts with the rest of the organization, and into the degree of sensitivity of the system to external input. The book sheds light on the judicial system governing the WTO and shows it to be the only truly multilateral system where disputes are solved by third-party adjudication.
The book develops along three lines: the first a search for cases submitted to the WTO where the judge exceeded its authority; the second a comparison of the WTO with the operations of national judicial systems having different levels of integration, specifically the United States (federal level) and the EC (quasi-federal level); and the third an exploration of directions for the future of dispute settlement in the WTO.
Reflecting the diversity of its contributors, this book addresses questions of economics, political science, and law, bringing an unusual level of multidisciplinarity to this topic and context.
