    Book Description

This wide-ranging review of some of the major issues in development economics focuses on the role of economic and political institutions. Drawing on the latest findings in institutional economics and political economy, Pranab Bardhan, a leader in the field of development economics, offers a relatively nontechnical discussion of current thinking on these issues from the viewpoint of poor countries, synthesizing recent research and reflecting on where we stand today.

The institutional framework of an economy defines and constrains the opportunities of individuals, determines the business climate, and shapes the incentives and organizations for collective action on the part of communities; Pranab Bardhan finds the institutional framework to be relatively weak in many poor countries. Institutional failures, weak accountability mechanisms, and missed opportunities for cooperative problem-solving become the themes of the book, with the role of distributive conflicts in the persistence of dysfunctional institutions a common thread.

Special issues taken up include the institutions for securing property rights and resolving coordination failures; the structural basis of power; commitment devices and political accountability; the complex relationship between democracy and poverty (with examples from India, where both have been durable); decentralization and devolution of power; persistence of corruption; ethnic conflicts; and impediments to collective action. Formal models are largely avoided, except in two chapters where Bardhan briefly introduces new models to elucidate currently under-researched areas. Other chapters review existing models, emphasizing the essential ideas rather than the formal details. Thus the book will be valuable not only for economists but also for social scientists and policymakers.

          Book Description

Waller and Nielsen focus on teaching the techniques for better thinking that the authors have used themselves for creativity, strategic planning, idea generation, process improvements, and thinking enhancement. Through the usage of a four-stage model, readers learn to understand, identify, and apply thinking strategies--their own as well as others'--enabling them to quickly recall and use them successfully. Each one of us has the ability to think clearly and powerfully, as we all use particular strategies for thinking in various personal and professional situations. One of the most interesting, yet overlooked, aspects of thinking is that each of us does it differently. Unfortunately, most of us have never been taught to think, let alone how to identify and use our natural thinking strategies. This informative and innovative work provides readers with an awareness for the uniqueness of each person's thinking strategies, and presents skills and techniques for recognizing and applying the characteristics of those strategies. The authors use a format that is easy to read and apply, providing a way to maximize thinking strategies and achieve greater performance in virtually any context. The result is a book not only for organizational behavior specialists, human resource professionals, and others who help people develop their skills and talents, but also a book that can be read and immediately put to use by employees themselves.

            Book Description

Biological diversity is as crucial in agriculture as it is in nature, and it is equally important to the economic health of both industrial and nonindustrial societies. This book offers a sweeping assessment of crop diversity and the potential for its preservation. Stephen B. Brush develops a framework for investigating biological diversity in agriculture that focuses on the knowledge and practice of farmers, and he shows how this human ecology perspective can be applied to three global issues that affect crop resources. Brush defines the dimensions of crop diversity and outlines the essential questions surrounding it. He describes the techniques used to maintain diversity in major crops of three cradles of agriculture in which he has worked: potatoes in the Peruvian Andes, maize in Mexico, and wheat in Turkey. Finally, he explores the policy issues surrounding genetic erosion of crop varieties, conservation of crop diversity, and ownership of genetic resources.

I find farming and plant genetics and history fascinating and I am very
much enjoying this book, which covers and connects these topics. It's
quite hard to read, though, the book seems intended as a textbook, it's
the opposite of the kind of book that makes a difficult topic accessible
for the layperson. It covers (I assume) all the other reseach on given
subjects, with citations, so it's very easy to get lost in masses of
data and technical terms, and there's not much assessment and conclusion
to make the data understandable. But in the absense of good popular
books that pull these topics together in detail, I can recommend it to
            the dedicated.

This is a clear presentation of Jungian Dream interpretation, but it is designed for the therapist, so the less advanced reader may not know some of the major ideas. Nevertheless it is clearly and logically presented and is without flights of fancy, so it has its own value.

5 out of 5 stars Theory and Practice of Understanding Your Dreams.......2003-11-05

This compact discussion of the Jungian method of dream analyses is a thorough examination of basic concepts as they are applied in practical dream interpretation. The author, a psychiatrist and Jungian Analyst, clearly outlines the process of understanding dreams and addresses their purpose. Dreams are for "problem solving and personality development." First they are compensation for conscious attitudes that are ineffective. Secondly dreams serve as guides to conscious integration of the unconscious elements of the psyche as an individual matures into an effective individuated being.
As an experienced student of dreams for 50 years, I consider this to be one of the best concise references. His example dreams illustrate the concepts and his organization of the theory of knowing one's Self is not dogmatic. Hall advises that the process is one of flexibility in differentiating the personal psyche of an individual from the universal and cultural structures that influence us all.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts, like every other place, is but a small corner of the planet. Yet it contains multitudes, as the nature writer and editor Robert Finch demonstrates in this lively set of essays. In the title piece, which opens the book, he muses on a fellow occupant of his study, a spider that, one day, does in a yellow hornet that has incautiously wandered into her web. There is no cruelty in the spider's act, Finch notes, only a quiet affirmation of the unsentimental ways of nature, in which death follows and even presupposes life. Other essays consider the unhappy fortunes of a beached whale, one that evidently had not found enough to eat at a crucial stage in its growth; the comings and goings of migratory birds and bats; the movement of sand dunes; the falling of autumn leaves; and the eternal power of the ocean. In limning the landscapes of Cape Cod, shaped by humans as much as by the sea, Finch shows that one need not wander into the wilderness to find nature in abundance; his gentle reflections on the small details of daily life are models of compression and careful observation.

Although some of the essays are tinged with melancholy--as befits any consideration of matters of life and death, and of the passage of the years--they collectively celebrate a place that has captured the hearts of many, and will long do so. Or, as Finch writes, "How lucky are we who live in proximity to such a landscape, that has such easy powers to lift us out of our narrow lives and self-made blinders, and so seduce us into seeing who we really are!" --Gregory McNamee

                            Book Description

Spanning more than 20 years, these essays record changes not only in the natural environment of Cape Cod but in the writer's own life.

Death of a Hornet is one man's elegant rendering of Cape Cod, a sandy, scrub-oaked, tough, and vulnerable spit of land reaching out into the Atlantic Ocean. These stories are "natural adventures" that Finch's previous readers have come to expect, as well as longer meditations on the future of the Cape's fragile environment, on living in one place for a long time, and on the limitations of human sympathy.

5 out of 5 stars The best nature writing since _Sand County Almanac_.......2003-06-13

Yes, Robert Finch writes with an intensity that comes with his passion for his life on the Cape Cod peninsula. But many of these essays describe creatures and natural phenomena that take place in other locales as well -- it's just that we're too busy or too apathetic to observe them. He sees. And then he tells us about his encounters, just as easily as if we're sitting across the table from him at a casual eatery.

My favorite passage is beach-oriented and describes a old cottage being overcome by natural forces: "Sand sifts slowly, like age, over everything, softening, obscuring, and finally obliterating each distinct thing into a semblance of itself and the next thing. In this sense, sand is the ultimate progressive poet, whispering, 'This chair is like this table, is like this bed, is like this sink -- and each thing is, more and more, like all the others, until finally they are all -- like me'." (p. 153) Of course! Why didn't any of the rest of us think to say or write that?

Save this volume for a time in your life when you need the peace of Nature to drape itself over you and slow down your blood pressure. These stories are worth savoring. Then go out and "see" for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Direct, touching essays.......2000-07-04

Robert Finch's words not only portray the flora and fauna and geography of Cape Cod, he shows the reader what the Cape really is. Those of us who've only visited during the season and thought we "knew" the place should be ashamed. Mr. Finch is a part of the Cape, and the Cape is a part of him, and this reader can only stare in wonder at the majesty and beauty of the world he describes.

What a remarkable year this has been for writing about nature in New England. First the dazzling debut Bullough's Pond, now this thoughtful collection of essays. Can't wait to see what the fall lists have in store.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful essays of everyday nature.......2000-05-07

This is Robert Finch's finest work yet. His rich, visual observations of everyday nature enlighten and entertain us--- from the tiniest observation of a spider's web to the adventure of saving beached whales off the seashore. Each piece shows the how nature can connect to our often busy, technical lives and how we can not and should not ever try to break that connection.

Believe it or not there are cowboys also beyond the Ocean in Europe !
I live in Italy and I am an horse owner. I like to ride in the western style way in a ranch here where it is possible to practice in team penning, barrel racing , pole bending etc...
The owner is Otello Ugolini the father of the Italian Team Penning.
Usually I don't race, but I play the turn-back role, helping the herds manager. So I like to train myself and my mare as if she is a "perfect" ranch horse.
I found the suggestions in this book very useful and easy to apply also for a casual cowboy like me. I have had no problem at all in teaching to my mare to stay quiet while I'm learning to use a rope or when we have had the first contact with cattle in the arena.
It's a very good book , full with photos that really help you in understanding what the author is explaining (remember I'm italian so I have also an increased level of difficulty due to the english language of the text)
I'v rated this book 4/5 stars only because my knowledge in horseriding is limited..For a beginner or for a non-pro rider this book deserves 5 Stars!
I recommend this book to all the people who like to try the ranch horsemanship starting from the beginning and proceeding further .

The ulimate guide to forensic science is well written , easy to understand informative for both individuals with a general interest in the topic and also for young people wishing to understand a career in forensic science. It is strictly a primer, as are most books in the colorful DK line. As such, it is a book that anyone can pick up to learn a general outline on many topics without being weighed down with too much technical information. A good basic book for the non-professional.

                            5 out of 5 stars Crime Scene.......2004-02-22

This was a fantastic book. It had lots of case studies and heaps of glossy, colour diagrams, which made the text very easy to understand. It was technical yet very easy to understand and it was very detailed. A must read for all those interested in forensi science.

2 out of 5 stars The illustrated pamphlet on criminal investigations.......2003-09-29

This book's target audience is the Hardy Boys mystery crowd. While every page is filled with colorful photographs and great looking illustrations, the depth of information conveyed is extremely thin. While the scope of the material is broad, covering crimes from homicide to cybercrime, you won't learn much about any real criminal investigation beyond what you'd learn from your average dime store crime novel series.

As a reader-friendly overview, it's fine. If, for instance, you happen to be a casual citizen who wants to get a general idea about what police investigators do, or you're an 8th grader looking for material for a Middle School research assignment, this might be an ideal book on the subject. The writing is easy to understand and again, there are lots of great looking pictures and illustrations (though some of them are a tad graphic).

However, if you are a member of the law enforcement community or some other kind of professional investigator, you aren't going to get much out of this title. Look elsewhere for a true reference book on Crime Scene work.

1 out of 5 stars Very simplistic and not very informative.......2003-08-27

I was really, really disappointed in this book. There is very little information in it, other than the broadest strokes of information about forensics. It is disjointed. Even the photographs are often totally wasted, such as models posed as victims without illustrating *anything* -- just photographs of some guy or girl in a pool of blood, or tied up.

ake, for example, fingerprints. There is like one sentence that says, basically, sometimes iodine vapor is used but it turns things brown and is temporary. No photographs of how it is done, when it is necessary, what the chemical reaction is, etc. This book is written for an eighth grader. You will learn more interesting things about forensic science on CSI!

                            Book Description

A thoroughly revised and significantly expanded edition of the popular 1980s original, Googie Redux is the authoritative history of the mid-20th century icon that ignited an architectural revolution: the coffee shop. Emblematic of Southern California car culture, stylized eateries and other roadside buildings built from the 1930s to the 1950s were dismissed as lowbrow stylistic folly in their heyday. Yet, as Alan Hess points out, in many ways they were the realization of modern architecture's grand promises. They were populist, employed new materials, and captured their purpose, place, and culture as vividly as any great architectural style. The influential original edition helped to spark a robust preservation movement and kick-started the reappreciation of mid-century architecture and design. This latest edition features extensive up-to-date research and dozens of rarely seen and newly found photographs. 5 out of 5 stars Achingly Beautiful.......2007-08-24

Googie was fading by the time I came along, but even in the remote area of the Midwest that I grew up in, its influence was felt. As a child, I didn't know what those slanted roofs and skewed-ball sign spires were called or where they came from, but I found their spacey, cartoonish vibe appealing (if increasingly worn and ill-maintained as the 70s wore on). This book, "Googie Redux," puts "ultramodern roadside architecture" in historical context and tells the stories of the commercial architects who invented Googie, primarily in Southern California. There's also an excellent section on automotive design of the postwar era, the ideas which inspired it, and its relation to Googie architecture. Fans of Americana, architecture, capitalism, and pop culture in general will adore this thick compendium of intelligent analysis and, in many cases, superb photographs documenting the glorious heyday and painful decline of this once-dominant style. Though Googie was shunned by the architectural establishment in its time, it is now given its due in this beautiful book. Buy it, read it, and catch a glimpse of an era in which roadside architecture was more than just the series of bland, inoffensive, lookalike boxes dispensing burgers, burritos, and coffee that we must suffer today. This book will feed your postwar fantasies and break your heart when you realize how homogenized commercial architecture has become.

5 out of 5 stars A True Gem in My Library!.......2004-10-21

I can start off this review by stating pretty much any book Alan Hess writes will find its way to my shelf. Googie Redux is an incredible update to the original which was a masterpiece in itself.

The new photographs and line drawings are a very nice touch along with the updated text. Mr. Hess has proven himself again as the leading authority on this genre of architecture.

The insight and presentation of the information is what this architecture truly deserves. To ignore this style and consider it a joke is something that will bite us back in years to come. By then most of these places will be torn down and we'll be left with only this book as a resource. But, oh what a resource it is!

Now, if only Mr. Hess could fly over to the East Coast and write a book about the architecture in the seaside community of Wildwood, New Jersey. Then the circle would be complete. Many of these motels were built around the same time as the West Coast structures and would make for a very interesting comparison. Same style and philosophies, but with different architects, locales, and climates. Very interesting indeed.

In summary the equation is simple...great author plus great architecture equals doubly great book!
