Nuts and bolts of scenario planning.......2003-08-06

I saw an review in Harvard Business School and I fully agree with them: "...serious but yet it's the friendliest introduction to the nuts and bolts of scenario planning that you are likely to find..." I really recommend this book to everyone who wants to explore, understand and have an impact on the future.

Practical tools for future strategy.......2003-05-19

This is an eminently practical book on scenario and strategy development. The language is simple, straight-forward with many examples, tools and anecdotes. In a verbal style, with lots of figures and bullet point lists, the five chapters in a way resembles lectures.
As faculty and lecturer at the Norwegian School of Management I find this book a perfect supplement in the curriculum to the two classics: P. Schwartz' "Art of the long view" and van Heijden "Scenarios". This book occupies a kind of middle-position between Schwartz' very popular and narrative account and van Heijden's more rational-academic discourse, which some practitioners find a hard read. Not like this one. There's not much deep philosophy either, as in J. Ogilvys recent "Creating Better Futures". The chapter on scenario planning in practice (#3) contains loads of simple, informative examples, written much shorter and to the point, than G. Ringland's three books on scenarios with much-detailed cases, repetitions and a weak structure.
In short - this book is a toolbox with instructions manual. As the Swedish authors Lindgren and Bandhold themselves say in the book; "Get yourself a toolbox". If you, as a manager or consultant want to learn, update or expand your portfolio of future oriented strategy tools, this one is The Choice.

This book identifies and discusses the key features of human resource management at the turn of the century from a northern European perspective (particularly referring to Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland and the UK). The authors' approach reflects the fact that these countries have become increasingly critical of the universalist model of SHRM common in the USA.The early chapters of the book address differences in concepts and practices in HRM in the region; these are followed by chapters that explore topics seen as particularly relevant in northern Europe. The conclusion looks at the usefulness and future of the notion of HRM as a result of these discussions. Wonderful Book on History of Ag Flying.......2003-11-13

I found this book to be very well written and, for me, completely fascinating. So much information on just exactly what went on during this time. These men were definitely the pioneers of their time in so many ways.

My father, Berkeley Ellis, is mentioned twice in this book. He was one of the founders of the Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service (along with Mabry Anderson and Ben White) so, this book has a personal value to my family. It opened up an era to me that I knew little about as I was too young to remember. My father, Berkeley, was, very unfortunately, killed while dusting a field in Round Lake, MS. in August of 1949.

This was a very necessary business, but also a very dangerous one. Some survived and some didn't.

I live in SC now and I am still fascinated by the beauty of watching these planes in the fields. There is so much skill that is required to do this kind of flying.

A wonderful history of the men and the flying and so much more.

For airplane lovers, this is a must.......1998-04-02

Particularly to farmers, pilots, or any other lover of planes, this picturesque history of the old ag aviation planes and pilots is a real treat. It has numerous old pictures and a colorful text of these aerial "acrobats". These pilots were, and continue to be, the real pioneers of flying.

Very fine small first aid manual.......2007-03-08

Backcountry First Aid is an excellent choice for a small manual or compendium about first aid treatments when you are in the outdoors. It is four inches by five and a half, and 120 pages long, so it will fit in a first aid kit or bag. The back cover has an "Action Index" that refers you to the pages for 47 different conditions or accidents. Topics like Bites and Stings, hypothermia, shock, water disinfection, etc, etc. The topics are covered very well - succinct and as comprehensive as you could hope for in a portable manual.

Of course it pays to read the manual before heading out, and in fact is valuable for anyone who wants to be ready for an accident or sudden sickness, whether in the wilderness, driving to work, or in your backyard.

Highly recommended.

Excellent quick guide to wilderness medicine.......2002-06-01

This is an easy to read nuts and bolts manual for wilderness medicine. Pictures and step by step instructions are easy to follow. The book is small and can pack easily and lightly.

Great Book.......1999-04-16

This is an awesome book to include in any first aid kit. I run my own outdoor adventure business and typically include this book in all of my first aid kits. It is concise and easy to understand, not to mention an invaluable reference in the backcountry.

The New Book of Lists.......2007-10-08

I have been waiting for this, I had both the old ones from the late 70's and 80's, and loved them, they went with me everywhere, and you can never tire of reading them. My book of "useless facts" is what my husband calls it, I can crack him up, amaze him, and leave him thinking with some of those lists. A book any true reader knows about is the book of lists.

I got this book as a gift for my sister-in-law. She is very quirky and outgoing, but it is hard to figure out what gifts she might like. We haven't given it to her yet as her birthday is in a month, but we flipped through and it seems like a great gift. It is a little more in depth than I thought it would be too - instead of lists like the top ten things to do in an elevator, and jokes like that, it includes actual facts and the reasons they are in the list - such as lucille ball's top 10 favorite tv shows. It spans everything from politics to pop culture and is almost three inches thick! wow!

For more years than I care to remember the Book of Lists and it's sequels have been giving us information that's presented with panache' and just the right amount of humor.

Want to know about stupid criminals - It's in there.
Want to know odd facts about historical figures - It's in there!
Want a light, fun read to satisfy your need for trivia - Oh, it's in there!

This particular volume is a mix of many of the lists in the original Book of Lists, plus a few updates.

I cannot say more about this book other than it helped me to seek other sources and aided me in so many ways when I was in college.

I mean, where else can you find the Dog Hero of the Year and 16 Cases of People Killed by God?

The Wallaces/Wallechinsky's also got a number of famous people to write their spin on the "listomania" as well.

This was an eclectic group covering such things as Lucille Ball's favorite sitcomes to Raold Dahl's best books to take to a distant planet.

Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Of course, it would be great if they would re-release the original Book of Lists volumes in some kind of tribute package, but you take what you can get.

Highly recommended.

If you do not already own all of the previous editions of The Book of Lists then I would recommend it. Unfortunately, most of the book is a rehash of previous editions of this series; there is very little new material here. To me, the book was a disappointment.

I first read this book in the '80's. This new book of lists is practically the same book. No new information, and much of it is just re-stated, if you have read the original Book of Lists, don't bother with this one.

This Audio Tape Is an Outstanding How-To Guide for Growth!.......2000-09-08

It has been almost two years since I read this book. On a recent trip to New York, I realized that I had the audio cassettes, but had never listened to them. So I did. What a wonderful surprise this was.

There are four cassettes and each is read by the authors who alternate. Both have good speaking voices, and use a good pace. It is easy to listen to them and follow their voices.

Unlike many cassette series which are overly edited, this one is just the right length. You get a good overview of all of the points on the first side and a half, then go into each one in more detail in the remaining three tapes.

As much as I liked the book, I liked the cassettes better. The authors are obviously used to speaking and teaching, and I felt like I was having them speak directly to me in a one-on-one session. I turned the tapes off whenever I had an assignment from them, and did the assignment. Clearly, this advanced my thinking much more than reading the book did. I was not as deeply into the concepts from reading as I was from listening, and did the assignments from a much more fundamental perspective.

Their first principle is to focus. The idea is to find what your most profitable customers find most valuable to them that you do best. This caused me to see our firm's relationship to our clients in a totally new perspective that is very valuable to me.

The second principle is to hard-wire listening to the customer. Although I remembered this advice from before, I was struck by realizing how few of the companies I know well take this advice. Customer listening is usually continuous, but is usually not well integrated into focusing the firm's attention. This is usually because most people don't see the information, or don't know how to interpret it.

The advice on how to create cooperation routinely throughout the organization is very good. I especially liked the variation on the internal customer concept espoused here whereby you are encouraged to both stay focused also on what the external customer needs.

Not only should you buy this resource, but you should then take a driving trip so you'll have a chance to listen to it. I suggest that you do as I did, and switch the tapes on and off so you can do the exercises in your mind (and later write down what you learned).

When you are done with this, I suggest that you also consider how this kind of approach could help your personal life. What should you be focusing on? How can you hard-wire listening to those around you? How can you all become more cooperative?

Pauly's book........2000-05-07

A great book. Anyone interested in a well written history of the Fund would do well by buying this book. Pauly's work combines a historical overview (as far back as the Genoa Conference of 1922) with an analysis of modern problems in this book. After having bought numerous books on international economics, Political science and economic history, I find Pauly's book to be very good value for money.

Readers should be aware that this book is a perfect example of writing in International Political Economy. It combines economic data with political analysis. For readers that want the economic theory as well as the political reality of the Fund's work, this book will be of benefit.

New Ideas in International Political Economy.......1999-10-17

Pauly is to congratulated on this book. Returning to a period of international monetary history that is often neglected or singularly explored only for its failings, the author quite precisely re-examines the Interwar monetary system and the role of the League of Nations in the "management" and "surveillance" of global financial relations. In identifying the roots of the Bretton Woods System and the IMF's eventual surveillance role in the League's operations, Pauly gives continuity and a measure of depth to our own understandings of today's financial systems. In addition, he explores the difficult question of the legitimacy of the state in an era when financial modernization and integration has humbled policymakers and ruined economies. Who Elected the Bankers? is an important book as we debate the future of our contemporary monetary system by calling our attention to the lessons of the League.
