Sports, Jobs, and Taxes: The Economic Impact of Sports Teams and Stadiums

America is in the midst of a sports building boom. Professional sports teams are demanding and receiving fancy new playing facilities that are heavily subsidized by government. In many cases, the rationale given for these subsidies is that attracting or retaining a professional sports franchise--even a minor league baseball team or a major league pre-season training facility--more than pays for itself in increased tax revenues, local economic development, and job creation.

But are these claims true? To assess the case for subsidies, this book examines the economic impact of new stadiums and the presence of a sports franchise on the local economy. It first explores such general issues as the appropriate method for measuring economic benefits and costs, the source of the bargaining power of teams in obtaining subsidies from local government, the local politics of attracting and retaining teams, the relationship between sports and local employment, and the importance of stadium design in influencing the economic impact of a facility.

The second part of the book contains case studies of major league sports facilities in Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis, San Francisco, and the Twin Cities, and of minor league stadiums and spring training facilities in baseball. The primary conclusions are: first, sports teams and facilities are not a source of local economic growth and employment; second, the magnitude of the net subsidy exceeds the financial benefit of a new stadium to a team; and, third, the most plausible reasons that cities are willing to subsidize sports teams are the intense popularity of sports among a substantial proportion of voters and businesses and the leverage that teams enjoy from the monopoly position of professional sports leagues.

Good for research.......2006-02-02

I used this as the backbone of my senior paper in college. However, I found that the authors did quite a bit of stretching to say that "no impact could be found". My own research has concluded that stadia can not be evaluated in purely economic terms as they chose to do.

That said, this book is good for grounding readers in a number of case studies, and should provide a road map to stadium advocates as to the flaws in previous proposals.

Statistics, Numbers, and Evidence.......2000-07-16

Andrew Zimbalist is back with his newest book on the economics of sports, Sports, Jobs, and Taxes. After writing Baseball to Billions, the Smith College professor returns with this publication on the effects of building stadiums in major markets. Zimbalist co-edits the book with Roger G. Noll, a director of the Public Policy Program at Stanford University. The two men examine many different cities and their various plans that involved new sports facilities. Using a dizzying assault of numbers and statistics, Sports, Jobs, and Taxes proves case by case how employment, taxes and urban development were either unaffected or negatively influenced by the facilities built in the respective cities. While such examples as Minneapolis, Chicago, and Cincinnati display evidence to support the editors' theories, the repetitiveness of these chapters' points begin to wear on the reader. Still, one comes away fully understanding what is continually stressed by Zimbalist and Noll. Sports facilities and the teams that play in them do not enhance local economies, do little for job creation, and never make up for the cost of higher taxes.

Insider View of Web Support Content.......2003-01-15

Structured as a series of interviews with the key players behind TAC Web: -- the senior director, project managers, technical writers, and site manager - the book is laced with e-support terminology as well as high-tech colloquialisms (e.g., bleeding edge appears frequently). The interviews themselves convey a sense of intimacy; you feel as if you're sitting in a meeting with all of Cisco's e-Support teams, getting an interior view of how their organization is structured and what methods they use. For example, you learn that Cisco has dedicated technical writers within the support teams to transform customer issues into meaningful support content. Also, a bonus of the interview format is that it allowed the book's designer to leverage white space effectively, alleviating the feeling of density that sometimes characterizes a text-heavy book.

The target audience for this book is CEOs and Senior VPs seeking to either implement an e-Support solution or improve an existing one. Of particular interest to these execs is the chapter on metrics, which provides graphics and sample charts showing the kinds of metrics Cisco relies on. (Walker Information regularly surveys Cisco customers regarding the TAC Web site content). It examines the greatest challenges involved in acting on these metrics, as well as what metrics are meaningful and where they come from. For example, Cisco measures what technical articles customers access most frequently so that their tech support team can proactively get that information to customers in a more direct form - either via e-mail messages or by making the content more visible on the TAC Web. Cisco also measures customer satisfaction with the technical content on the Web site, so that they can improve its effectiveness and accessibility..

As for the book itself, it has one big weakness: It is not a blueprint. Although it provides a useful peek inside a successful e-Support implementation, it does not offer a step-by-step method for creating a comparable system for your company or for "saving millions" with your own e-Support solution. The authors could have done a better job of setting appropriate expectations in an Introduction explaining the book's scope and goals or by writing a Conclusion that summed up the interviews. Also, they really don't talk about how the Cisco e-Support model might translate to other companies. Will it scale down for companies that don't have the resources to assemble a marketing team devoted exclusively to e-Support or a team of writers and editors to gather and shape content from support engineers?

An informative presentation of the E-support system.......2003-01-06

Collaboratively written by Cisco experts Andrew Connan and Vincent Russell, E-Support: How Cisco Systems Saves Millions While Improving Customer Support is an intrinsically fascinating, informed and informative presentation of the E-support system -- a self-service, web-based means of providing help and support to customers that is much less costly than traditional telephone-based support services. A thorough and "reader friendly" guide to what e-support is, and how it can benefit the conduct of business (especially focusing upon the e-support network created by Cisco Systems), E-Support is very highly recommended reading and directly applicable to understanding and developing an e-support corporate marketing strategy.

So your interested in globalization? Well, this book takes a look at it through the lenses of the American far-left (Cavanagh, Wallach)AND the far-right (Buchanan, Perot).

How do these ideologies merge? Well, they don't, but the book does examine how they arise from American ideologies of yesteryear. And that is really the book's strong point. How are American cultural beliefs exceptionalism, Fordism, Keynesianism, nationalism, racism, and conservatism coping with the "New World Order."

And if your interested the left or right's critiques of globalization, check the 'net. globalexchange and public citizen maintain fine sights, and I bet there are some from the right's perspective as well.

This differs from the existing publications, which focus on the causes, development and impact of the crisis and are written without integrating Asia into the global economic development.

Compared with a few other books on China published recently, this one makes most sense with its research and data underpinning the anecdots. The information density and quality is extremely high in the book.

I certainly do not agree with all the views, but the conviction of the author's arguments serve to rock existing thinking and prompt readers to reassess their views.

The book takes a rare fordward-looking approach to analyze the complex economic cross currents that are unfolding in the coming years. It builds the thesis of a new economic paradigm on not only the rise of China's economic clout, but also on Asia's structural woes, insufficient reform and persistence of crony capitalism.

This book also goes an extra step to link the global economic development (problems) with Asia and China's development. The author argues that the changing global dynamics are part of the puzzle that builds the new economic paradigm.

There is something for different types of readers to chew on. Those economic-oriented souls will find a wealth of clearly written theories to feast on. Those less technical readers will get a solid snapshot of the economic powerplays currently underway in Asia.

The thrust of the book's message is 3-fold: 1) China's growth is more than hype and lies; 2) China's rising economic clout is not a zero sum game (by stealing others' lunches) - it could indeed enlarge the lunch for everyone; and most crucially 3) China's growth is creating a new economic paradigm, where the good old days of easy money and strong pricnig power are gone.

The author's observations of the future global pricing trends and a new Asian business model are both far-reaching and insightful.

His view of a decaying Japan may be too strong. But the message to the regional governments is clear - adapt to the new economic era by uprooting the old habits and living with China and stop scapegoating China for their policy failures.

The author is a China bull. But he does not deny the massive woes that China is facing - broken banks, corrupt state firms, lack of accountability, mounting pension liability and so on. What he differs from the conventional pessimists is his reading of reform dynamics. He sees China moving fowrad, albeit slowly, instead of standing still waiting for a disaster to happen.

Only time will tell if China would help make Asia a happier richer region, as the book argues, or it will be a destabilizing force crushing the region. This book will serve as a reality check in 10 years' time.

A very interesting book on Asian Economies.......2003-07-31

It presents a thorough illustration on the 1997/1998 Asian crisis based on strong analytical ground, and the role of China in shaping Asia's economic future.

Inspiring in its case studies, one on `China's Pressure on Hong Kong' and the other on `China's Pressure on Taiwan'. A lively and concise book, which provokes the question of `Will China become the number one economic powerhouse in the 21st Century'?

A 'must read' for learning about China's new role in Asia.......2003-04-22

This book has critically examined the cause of financial crisis happened in Asia back in 1997/8, whereas someone might say this was currency crisis, but the author claimed this was actually a liquidity crisis. The unwillingness of many Asian countries, due to moral hazard, to initiate a fundamental structural reform has casued these countries a prolonged period of correction.

As China are exhibiting competitive stress in the global manufacturing advantages, quite similar to the Asian's success back in 1980/90s, these Asian countries do require extra efforts to move up the competitive edge in order sustain its pre-crisis economic dynamics.

In the meantime, the author also provides his viewpoints on why China will overtake Japan's fading dominant position in Asia, partly because of Japan's continual denial of her failures in a number of reforms for the past decade.

This book is not only a good reference book for executives eager to explore China's role in the post-crisis economic transformation, but also illustrating a lot of interesting obervations and open-end questions for further studies.
