3 out of 5 stars More Business, Less Gift Basket Oriented.......2006-01-02

This book does contain some good information about starting your own business as a majority of the information in the book is generalized business information such as business planning, bookkeeping and general marketing. However, I bought this book looking for specific resource information about gift baskets: how to find wholesale suppliers and how to make and package gift baskets. While the author does use some general references about gift baskets, the information is sparse and I was disappointed in the book overall for anyone looking for specific information on gift baskets.

5 out of 5 stars A great foundation for your Gift Basket Business.......2003-08-06

This book has been most helpful to me since I am gathering information to join a self employment program (in the gift basket industry).
The information given in the book it is very clear and easily understood, with many examples, ideas and lots of helpful and important information.
I definitely recommend this book to individuals that are considering having their own gift basket business

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book for the Gift Basket Business.......2001-06-20

Two years ago, I was curious about making my hobby of designing gift baskets into a home-based business. I had the creativity but the business aspect was eluding me. After reading this book--I now understand how to set prices, hire good employees, promote and run my business smoothly. After two years, I am a success in my small town and I'm ready to expand my business on to the Internet. Thankfully, this book has a section on Internet marketing. It is an easy-to-read book, with helpful examples and up-to-date information. I recommend it to anybody considering the gift basket business.

    Book Description

Increase management effectiveness through improved motivation skills. This proven instrument is based on the classic motivation theories of Maslow and Herzberg which identify motivating factors in terms of an individual's security, social, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs. Managers will learn to understand their own motivations as well as take into account employees' motivations as they relate to performance and change issues. MbM teaches managers how to capitalize on employees' natural motivators rather than focusing on external motivators that are less relevant to them.

This instrument is a stimulating new addition to existing supervisory and management development workshops on change, teams, and leadership. The 20-item questionnaire can be completed and self-scored in 15 minutes, and includes brief and insightful interpretive material. A companion Trainer's Guide includes training designs, a lecturette, norms, and references.

                Book Description

This is a peak performance handbook--for individuals and teams--for skydivers and non-skydivers alike. It's a "how to" book that teaches practical methods and techniques for designing realistic plans to achieve goals. Best of all it's filled with creative and innovative mental training tools that are simple to use and can be applied immediately. John DeRosalia is a master at motivation and performance enhancement. He's been training the `best of the best' both in and out of skydiving for over a quarter of a century. The 2 chapters on teamwork alone are invaluable. The chapter Video Games—the Creative use of Visualization and Imagery, is ingenious, extremely effective, and lots of fun. The chapter on Performance Anxiety can make a difference immediately. This book is an exhilarating experience. It can change your life.

If you are a competitive skydiver, it's worth picking up. However, there are better books for non-skydivers, like "The Pursuit of Excellence"

5 out of 5 stars Gave me the confidence to rock through AFF..........2006-03-19

Using this book and some other training I was able to gain the tools needed to finish my AFF and do it in style. After failing my level 4 I needed a boost. After reading this and realizing that a lot of what I was going through was normal, and getting my mind in check, I went out and nailed the rest. I've got 12 jumps now and gaining more confidence all the time. Thanks John!!

Excellent book. Applies to all parts of life, not just sports performance. Gives the best explanation of how your thoughts impact your performance that I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars ESPECIALLY For Skydivers-and other athletes too.......2003-04-19

If you are serious about your skydiving, you must get a hold of this book. I'm sure you heard, or read Jack Jeffries' review of this book, he's right. Skydiving, as are other sports, is a mental game. MORE so than other sports because we only have about a minute of "pratice" time, each time we go up. That is important to remember. The author explains simply the techniques and exercises he uses and teaches to fly with proficiency. You'll breeze through it with his plucky attitude, and personal stories that relate to the ideas he teaches you. You won't be disappointed! And like the title says, it will help you in life as well. Mental training is where it's at. Get into the zone and WIN competitions!

No book can find your ideas for you, but this one provides a great service in helping you discover and develop a story, and to come up with the completed script. King helps you learn to think cinematically, in the language of the movies, and to keep asking the essential questions as they work: What's the story? Who is the story about? Do you care about the characters? Does anyone? King also tries to help you survive not just the structural pitfalls that can derail a script, but also the mental or emotional whirlpools that can prevent any artist from finishing a project.

Don't let the size of this book fool you, there is a lot of valuable knowledge locked within its covers. This book leads you along the landmarks of a good film to create the structured path that Hollywood loves. This book helped me to write 2 screenplays that went on to make it into the final rounds of 6 screenwriting competitions. I didn't write them in 21 days, but I did finish them and receive a lot of praise.

5 out of 5 stars The only screenwriting course you need.......2007-09-15

HOW TO WRITE A MOVIE IN 21 DAYS take the complete novice to a level of competency I never thought possible from a single book. It is clear, concise and very readable. It is must reading for anyone who wants to learn how screenplays get done. Master the contents of this book before reading any other book on screenwriting. After reading this book and applying its contents, I did not read the Screenwriting for Dummies book I bought because I already had all the skills and information I needed on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect guide.......2007-06-28

This book is the perfect guide to not just screen writing, but also writing in general. In contains exercises of finding and getting to know your characters. The 21 days are well planned and will keep you busy. It's helped me create a realistic plot with realistic characters.

5 out of 5 stars If you can't get past page 60..........2007-06-15

I am a working screenwriter, and this is the only screenwriting book I recommend. Why? Most of the screenwriting books out there are very useful - for rewriting. This book actually gets you to complete the first draft - a huge hurdle for beginning writers. You probably won't finish in 21 days, and the draft you write probably won't be very good. But that doesn't matter, because you will finish a draft, and then you can rewrite it and make it good.

I still use this book to clarify my thinking, or if I'm on a tight deadline.

                5 out of 5 stars Great advice.......2007-05-21

Although a person can't effectively write a movie in 2l days this book gives great advice in how to start your screenplay.

                      Rich Girl in the Mirror

When does a dream bescome a nightmare? Find out in Mirror Image as a teenage girl is given a glittering meteorite, places it under her pillow, and awakens to discover that her greatest wish has come true...

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the richest girl of all?

Motherless Marilee Ellis lives with her father in a rented rundown trailer hidden on the Estes family's estate. She's fifteen, and she knows exactly what she wants. To be rich. Fabulously rich. Rich enough that Adam, her hunky best friend, will really love her. Rich enough to get even with the princesses who treat her like trash. Then her grandmother gives her a heart-shaped meteorite and overnight her life turns inside out.

It starts with an unwanted gift -- a lottery ticket -- and ends when Marilee becomes the richest girl in town. Suddenly she can buy everything she ever wanted. Suddenly everyone wants to be her friend. Suddenly Adam is no longer her friend. She thought it was all about money. But she's about to learn the hardest lesson of her life....

This book is about Marilee, the poor girl. Marilee Ellis has always wanted to be rich. She wants to be so rich that her best friend will love her and those mean girls at school will be nicer and jealous of her. Then she gets the LoveRock from her Grammy as a gift and she makes a wish. Soon Marilee has won the lottery and has more money than she ever dreamed of. But she quickly learns that money can't buy everything especially not love.

An excellent addition to the Mirror Image series!

                      5 out of 5 stars What A Great Story!.......2000-03-27

This was a great book! I really enjoyed it and it was soo interesting that I couldn't put it down. If you loved the first Mirrow Image book, then you'll definitely love this book too. The book showed that money can't buy everything, a good heart does. Marilee discovers this after her wish of becoming rich came true after wishing on the loverock. Before receiving the loverock from her Grammy, Marilee was very poor. She'd always wish she was as rich as the girls who tease her at school were. Then when she wished upon the loverock, her wish finally comes true but she learns the lesson that money can't buy everything. To find out more about her dilema, read Mirror Image: Rich Girl In The Mirror. You won't be dissappointed.

                        Book Description

Globalism: The New Market Ideology rejects the notion that we find ourselves at the end of ideology and that democracy has won. Instead, Steger argues that the opening decade of the 21st century will constitute a teeming battlefield of clashing ideologies. The chief protagonist is the dominant neoliberal market ideology Steger calls globalism. After identifying and evaluating the five central claims of globalism--including assertions that globalization is inevitable, nobody is in charge of globalization, and globalization benefits everyone--Steger offers an overview of the counterclaims made by anti-globalist forces. Book Description

China and Globalization is a compact, highly readable introductory text on contemporary China and the massive changes it is presently undergoing. It focuses primarily on how economic structural change is driving the processes, but discusses many other issues as well--politics, social change, reform, international economics, and cultural change. In its quarter-century long shift from communism to capitalism, China has transformed from a desperately poor nation into a country possessing one of the fastest-growing and largest economies in the world. Doug Guthrie covers the social, economic, and political factors responsible for the revolutionary changes, and interweaves this broader structural analysis with a consideration of social changes at the micro and macro levels. The book also considers the potential for further change. Will China become more democratic? Will the government become more serious about protecting human rights and creating a transparent legal system? How will China's explosive growth impact both East Asia and the larger global economy? In sum, this will be a sophisticated, definitive yet compact overview of the effects of massive social, economic, and political reforms on the most populous nation in the world.
Books in this series look at how nations and regions across the world are navigating the tumultuous currents of globalization. Concise, descriptive, interdisciplinary, and theoretically informed, they serve as ideal introductions to the peoples and places of our increasingly globalized world.

2 out of 5 stars Like a Textbook-- published by PRC.......2006-11-10

The author presented quite a rosy picture on China. On privatization, this book praised the successful gradual approach of the government. On institutional reform and liberalization, the market forces and foreign investors seem to be transforming China into a "rational" and democratic system.

Although the author distances himself from the neoliberals on the issue about privatization, his logic on institutional transition and modernization nevertheless make him more of a neoliberal than otherwise. This book described the policy reforms and changes of social control mechanism nicely, but not the social problems and challenges resulted from the reform.

Optimism is fine, but downplaying the uncertainties and social ills associated with globalization is not. The excessive optimism of the book make it like an English version of a Chinese official textbook.

5 out of 5 stars The best book written on modern China's rural development.......2002-10-19

Jonathan Unger, a highly regarded China scholar from Australia, has been studying rural China for 3 decades. In the 1970s, when most scholars were prevented from doing true fieldwork in the PRC, Unger and colleagues interviewed recent Hong Kong migrants from a particular village in Guangdong province, and produced the excellent village study "Chen Village" (later updated to include the Deng era). In the 1980s and 1990s, he started making regular extensive trips around the Chinese countryside talking to farmers, rural workers, officials, etc. "The Transformation of Rural China" is a collection of Unger's essays covering this entire span, all updated and with extensive references to other scholars' work.

The first 90 pages of this 250 page book are about the Mao era. There are essays on the state's power at the village level, the rural class structure, ideology and work incentives, and the Cultural Revolution. One point that hasn't been made by many others is that the peasants were not opposed to collective farming per se, what they resented was the lack of economic freedom given the collectives. The state's sometimes irrational restrictions on what the village collectives could do (what to plant, how to plant it, how to divide income among villagers, how to market the output), and the unfairly low prices paid for the village's output all contributed to rising disillusionment with the Maoist rural development model.

The rest of the book is about the reform era. First is an article on the early 1980s decollectivization. Unger's interviews undermine the "voting with feet" explanation offered by the regime and accepted uncritically by most western observers. Decollectivization was mostly a top-down, non-spontaneous, involuntary affair. This is not to say it wasn't welcomed, just that farmers had little to do with it. Most villages seem to have preferred the new decentralized family managed co-op system, yet a minority of villages that preferred to keep the collective farms crumbled under fierce state pressure.

A couple of essays are about the emerging private sector in rural China, including migrant labor, and he assesses the entrepreneurial activities of local governments.

A particularly important essay is the one on poverty in the hinterlands, regions that have gotten much less attention than the dynamic SE coast. Unger shows that a lot of the alleged poverty reduction from the late 1980s into the 1990s was the result of invalid statistics. The government's anti-poverty efforts for these regions in the 1990s have been sincere, but not terribly effective. The crisis in health care and schooling access in these areas is particularly acute, something that wasn't nearly so big a problem in the pre-reform and early reform eras.

One of the observations many western observers might find surprising is that the government--following the advice of western and Chinese economists--has been trying for several years at least, to force the peasants to privatize land. During the 1980s and most of the 1990s, villages periodically redistributed land to maintain equal per capita land distribution in the face of changing household sizes. This arrangement is quite popular, the evidence shows, for it ensures farmers can never lose their land and can have enough food when their household gains members. Yet the government is persistent in applying pressure to forward its forced privatization policy. This will no doubt be cheered by western politicians, the same ones who claim to support "democracy" in China.

                                  Description:
Much of the discussion on state and market in the literature is conducted in binary forms. State and market are contrasted with each other. However, far from impeding marketisation, the state plays the role of accelerating the marketisation process in China. State acts as the builder of market. The Chinese experience has created unprecedented possibilities for institutional innovation. The institutional choices and structural changes represent the changing roles of different actors in the housing system, which shift the patterns of housing investment. This paper examines the changing roles of the different actors (state, work units and households) in shaping the patterns of housing investment.
