Book Description
In The Culturally Customized Web Site, Nitish Singh and Arun Pereira focus on cultural aspects of international website design, honing in on three objectives:
* First, to present a review and survey results on standardization/localization issues on the web
* Second, to present a scientifically tested framework to design culturally adapted international websites, and provide marketers and web designers with practical web localization tools
* Third, to show readers the power and effectiveness of culturally customized websites
This is the first book to address the issue of website standardization, localizationor what the authors refer to as cultural customization. Little evidence has been accumulated to show whether international consumers prefer to browse and buy from standardized global websites or websites adapted to local cultures. The Culturally Customized Web Site provides insights into whether the web is a culturally neutral medium of communication or a medium impregnated with cultural values. Also presented is empirical evidence as to whether local consumers prefer standardized websites or websites adapted to their culture.

The finer points of web site globalization .......2007-01-31
This work gets under the skin of the web site globalization industry. Highly recommended for students of international marketing, and extremely rich in references. Nitish Singh and Arun Pereira get down to the nitty-gritty of numbers, colors and other cultural aspects of web site globalization. They present an enormous wealth of well researched material, sprinkled with pearls of wisdom, in a very readable book.
EXCELLENT!.......2006-06-18
An enlightening book! To take advantage of a world that is "flat", businesses must comprehend the powerful role culture plays in shaping tastes and preferences. To start, check out www.theculturallycustomizedwebsite.com and do the Cultural IQ test!
I found the following to be an eye-opener. When asked to visualize the following: "A lady dressed in white at a place of worship", a majority of westerners visualized a bride at the altar, whereas a majority of easterners visualized a widow in prayer!! White, it seems is worn by widows in many parts of asia, not by brides. Be careful of the choice of color and images on your web site!
A Must Have.......2006-06-15
The Culturally Customized Web Site is a must have for all web designers. Whether you are a first-timer, or an old pro, The Culturally Customized Web Site will have what you need. All too often, we forget that our sites are not being viewed only by Americans, and The Culturally Customized Web Site reminds us of this. It gives us the cultural know-how needed to create an effective localized site. Praise to Singh and Pereira for showing us the way!
let me see . . ........2006-04-26
I give these guys a 2 stars rating for being interested in some highly overseen theme.
.
As a way to explore a little bit the authors' presentation of this topic in 176 pages, which amazon "suggested" to me, I simply went to their web site (theculturallycustomizedwebsite.com) and clicked on "test your cultural IQ".
.
what did I get? a blank page "suggesting" to me download the flash plugin in order to watch some flash crud!!!
.
I wonder whose IQ (cultural, technical, ...) needs testing and I will stop now.
Product Description
This text--developed in response to an increasing interest in ethics and a growing number of courses on this topic that are now being offered in educational leadership programs--is designed to fill a gap in instructional materials for teaching the ethics component of the knowledge base that has been established for the profession. Ethical Leadership and Decision Making in Education: Applying Theoretical Perspectives to Complex Dilemmas, Second Edition: *demonstrates the application of different ethical paradigms (the ethics of justice, care, critique, and the profession) through discussion and analysis of real-life moral dilemmas that educational leaders face in their schools and communities;
*addresses some of the practical, pedagogical, and curricular issues related to the teaching of ethics for educational leaders;
*emphasizes the importance of ethics instruction from a variety of theoretical approaches; and
*provides a process that instructors might follow to develop their own ethics unit or course. Part I provides an overview of why ethics is so important, especially for today's educational leaders, and presents a multiparadigm approach essential to practitioners as they grapple with ethical dilemmas. Part II deals with the dilemmas themselves. It includes a brief introduction to how the cases were constructed, an illustration of how the multiparadigm approach may be applied to a real dilemma, and ethical dilemmas written by graduate students that represent the kinds of dilemmas faced by practicing administrators in urban, suburban, and rural settings in an era full of complexities and contradictions. Part III focuses on pedagogy and provides teaching notes for the instructor. The authors discuss the importance of self-reflection on the part of both instructors and students, and model how they thought through their own personal and professional ethical codes as well as reflected upon the critical incidents in their lives that shape their teaching and frequently determine what they privileged in class.
Book Description
The study of ethics and leadership can be traced back to Aristotle and the Ancient Greeks. Against the backdrop of corporate, political, and religious scandal, a contemporary examination of the complex and subtle relationships between ethics and leadership could not be more timely. In this updated and expanded edition of Ethics, The Heart of Leadership, Joanne Ciulla presents a unique collection of essays by philosophers, leadership scholars with backgrounds in industrial and organizational psychology, and management theorists. The authors tackle such profound questions as: How do leaders motivate followers to achieve their goals? What is the moral relationship between leaders and followers? Are ethical leaders driven by self-interest or altruism? What is the ethical value of a leader's accomplishments? Do their actions serve the greatest good? Featuring new essays by Bruce Avolio and Edwin Locke, Terry Price, Bernie Bass and Paul Steidlmeier, and a foreword by James MacGregor Burns, Ethics, The Heart of Leadership probes what the answers to these questions mean for today's leaders, offering hands-on insights into the ethical dynamics that make the heart of leadership tick.

Good, broad range of opinions.......2005-09-15
I read this book for my master's program in organizational leadership and it is one of the better compendiums I have read in the breadth of views included. While some authors are clearer and better reads than others, the range of opinion more than makes up for it.
A must read for anyone with pretensions of leadership.......1999-09-12
The title and the academic appearance of this work makes it sound dull. That is anything but the case. Dr Ciulla is gifted writer and sharp editor. The chapters she wrote are especially compelling and riveting, and she leavens her thoughts with abundant wit and flair. I look forward to reading further works from her.

Countries of the region represent over a quarter of the world's population, most of whom are existing at or below the poverty level. The potentials for economic growth through the development of coastal tourism, mariculture, fisheries, mineral extraction, and oil and gas production are examined by the authors in relation to the need for ensuring the long-term sustainability of marine resources.
Book Description
This book celebrates 25 years of the touring skating show Champions on Ice, with an up-close look at the 2002 Olympic Tour, featuring Salt Lake City gold medallists Sarah Hughes, Alexei Yagudin, and Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat, and many others. Christine Brennan of USA Today has travelled with the tour and spent time with skating’s superstars behind the scenes to learn what makes them special and what makes them tick. She follows the tour to present a “day-in-the-life” view, from wake-up call to tuck-in at night, from quiet moments to clowning around, to a packed arena and showtime on ice.
In addition to this year’s tour, Brennan brings moments alive from every year, presenting a “Who’s Who” of modern figure skating. The story of Champions on Ice mirrors the development of figure skating itself, and Brennan brings this to life when she describes fan passions, the art and craft of selecting the right music for a routine, the changing role of coaches and choreographers, and the impact of the “Russian invasion” that changed the face of North American figure skating in the early 1990s.
Also profiled is Tom Collins, the impresario who created Champions on Ice when he put together the first tour of Olympic-level skaters in the mid-1970s. Today, his 2002 Olympic Tour will play 93 dates from coast to coast, with a further winter tour booked for early 2003. Collins attributes his success to creating a comfortable family environment for his talented skaters, and it is this sense of fun and the sheer joy of skating that comes through on every page of Champions on Ice.
Customer Reviews:
Tom Collins is The Greatest!!.......2003-05-30
If I could rate this book a 10 I would.
Tommy, to his friends, and we are lucky to be his friends because as much as we personaly love him, his wife, Jane, (Janie), and now his sons, Mike, Mark, and Marty, Tommy is extreamly loyal to the performing skaters, managers, crew members of past generations. We've cried with him when his dear friend and ours, Paul Andre died. Before that was the loss of his sister, Marty, and her three children. After was the loss of Morris Chalfen and many years later Harris Collins; both were inovators for ice-skating shows. And too many more to mention here, but all were so dear to their "skating family". Tommy NEVER forgets his friends. Nor does Don Watson, Butch Collins, David Sutton, Roger Bathurst from Holiday on Ice, Ice Capades, or Ice Follies, all dear friends and incredible people, and his staff on tour. And Sandy Reed, whom I know only from her kindness year after year. Anyone who buys this book is in for a fantastic treat. It is a wonderfull skate through decades of skating's elete. Tommy, you are a diamond in the often murky world of figure skating! Love always Carol and Clive Phipson.
Great Book of Skating!.......2003-01-10
I love this book!! Brennan gives a year by year history of each tour, she highlights favorite skaters, talks about unique antics/events that occured with touring, but my favorite is when she gives a blow by blow 24 hour day in the life of the skaters and the Champions on Ice staff. Marvelous! Page after page is devoted to setting up of the ice show (they start early in the wee morning hours), problems that occur, and how the skaters spend their time, warm up prior to the show, what they do during the performance. Lots of pictures of the skaters on and off the ice. One of the best skating books ever!
Awesome.......2003-01-02
Love the tour, love the skaters, love the book!
THIS WAS A WONDERFUL BOOK ON TOM COLLINS CHAMPIONS ON ICE.......2002-11-11
I learnt a lot about this tour. The history, the man behind it, and much more.
Book Description
Puzzled by signs warning you to mind the gap in the London Underground? Wondering what will be on your plate if you order toad in the hole from the menu of a London caf? In Divided by a Common Language, Christopher Davies explains these expressions and discusses the many differences in pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary between British and American English. He compares the customs, manners, and practical details of daily life in the United Kingdom and the United States, and American readers will enjoy his account of American culture as seen through an Englishman's eyes. Davies tops it off with an amusing list of expressions that sound innocent enough in one country but make quite the opposite impression in the other. Two comprehensive glossaries help travelers translate from one variety of English to the other, and additional lists explain the distinctive words of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Divided by a Common Language is the ideal travel companion for British visitors to the United States and American visitors to the United Kingdom. It is also the perfect book for Britons interested in American culture and Americans enjoying British novels, movies, and television at home.
Customer Reviews:
Some good research.......2007-03-14
Most books give a good translation between British and American English, but this book goes into a little more detail on the oprigins and reasons for the differences.
Mind the Gap! .......2005-11-04
Don't drop a clanger-make a big faux pas-when traveling in the U.K! This book is a terrific read for anyone planning a trip to Britain. Amusing and useful, I would recommend DIVIDED BY A COMMON LANGUAGE to anyone hoping to "say the right thing" from pubs to politics and television to travel. This book is a gem that will keep you in the know. Cheers!
TOP RATE.......2005-09-14
This book was surprisingly funny. I expected a dry dictionary for referance and got a very well organized, pithy book that I read cover to cover just for the fun of it. I also plan to keep it for referance when I travel. Delightful and educational.
A good, succint reference.......2004-10-16
It's not the be all and end all but it's a good quick reference. If you're really serious you should get a different one to supplement this.
PS: to the person who referred to pumps as high-heeled shoes, that is not correct. It has nothing to do with the heels (think of men's dress pumps) just the fact that they slip on. A common mistake but one to clarify.
Good Yen, but Yang Required for Balance..........2004-07-21
Excellent book, much of it in the style of a dictionary. Offers specific phrases to use as alternatives in both American and British cultures. Written by a Brit who now lives in Florida, so it's nice to see the still-British-influenced language he uses in his narrations. And it's written for use in both cultures, not just geared to travelers from Britain traveling in America or vice-versa.
I do think this book is perfect in combination with the book "Brit-think Ameri-think" by Jane Walmsley who is (as opposed to Davies) American born but now living in Britain. In her book, she offers the necessary complement to "Divided" by giving her readers a less technical, more anecdotal insight into the attitudes, habits and background of the two cultures (and she's humorous as well).
On its own, this book is very technically good.
