Managing Power Through Lateral Networking
Margaret Brindle , and Lisa A. Mainiero Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1567203345 |
Book Description
The implementation of new ideas in organizations is often hampered by the political dynamics of lateral relationships. The authors of this book offer a balance of theory and cases designed to give managers and executives strategies for dealing with power relationships in an effective way. This book highlights common mistakes people make in managing lateral relationships. Most problems concern misunderstandings about the political realities that arise from underlying power distribution inherent in any organization. The authors offer a roadmap based on real-life dilemmas faced by both new and seasoned managers in order to help solve seemingly unsolvable problems. Using ideas from the resource-dependence paradigm, they model and diagram lateral relationships in a way that create effective plans of action. Managers, executives, and MBA students will find this synthesis of theory and practice an important tool for building a model for success. Part I gives the reader an understanding of the workings of lateral relationships within organizations. It goes on to provide specific models and strategies for working within these relationships. Part II details specific scenarios that will be faced by managers and executives and offers ways to cope with them. The increasingly diverse workforce and growing reliance on team management only intensifies the need for more effective lateral relationship management. This book provides the application of theories and skills vital to coping in such an organizational environment.Customer Reviews:
Why did bad things happen to me?.......2002-05-03
Finally - a USEFUL framework to accomplish goals in an organization! The beauty of this 'ABC Model' lies in its universal applicability and the fact that - IT WORKS!
With this tool, one can analyze their own personal situation within an organization to unveil the complex and often invisible interactions, motivations, churnings, characters and power factors that drive organizational action.
In ideal organizations, one would not have to use this sort of strategy. But, nevertheless, even though our organizational charts might be flat, our titles wiped clean and our formerly stringent bureaucracies eliminated - PEOPLE still wield power in organizations and power still matters.
Get power and use it!.......2000-10-18
Indispensable to Managers and Academixs.......2000-10-12
For practitioners especially, this provides THE key to POWER and MANIPULATION- applicable in all organization types and all situations. From e-business, to non-profits, to government, whatever complex situation you face, by utilizing this model, you may obtain what you truly want.
For academics, this provides an analytical framework for an area of study previously characterized by the same fuzziness and unpredictability that pervades human (and management) behavior.
I have utilized this in my organization and have been able to manipulate many factors into my favor. This should be an indispensable element in any manager or aspiring executive's career development.

Environmental Immunochemical Analysis Detection of Pesticides and Other Chemicals: A User's Guide
Shirley J. Gee et al , Bruce D. Hammock , and Jeanette M. Van Emon Manufacturer: Noyes Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0815513976 |
Book Description
Immunochemistry has broad applications for a wide variety of environmental contaminants. However, the potential for applying immunochemical methods to environmental measurements is just beginning to be realized. Immunochemical methods are based on specific antibodies combining with their target analyte(s). Many specific antibodies have been produced for targets of environmental and human health concern. Such antibodies can be configured into various analytical methods. The most popular Immunochemical technique in environmental analyses today is immunoassay. Immunoassays have been shown to detect and quantify many compounds of environmental interest such as pesticides, industrial chemicals, and products of xenobiotic metabolism. Among the most important advantages of immunoassays are their speed, sensitivity, selectivity and cost-effectiveness.
Immunochemical methods for the analysis of environmental contaminants are relatively new on the analytical chemistry scene. These methods are based on the use of a specific antibody as a detector for the analyte of interest. Immunoassays are rapid, sensitive, and selective, and are generally cost effective for large sample loads. They have been applied to diverse chemical structures (i.e., triazines, sulfonylureas, organo-phosphates, polychlorinated biphenyls, cyclodienes) and are adaptable to field use. These characteristics make immunochemical analysis a valuable tool for use by the environmental analytical chemist. This document is designed to facilitate the transfer of this valuable technology to the environmental analytical chemistry laboratory. Field personnel who may need to employ a measurement technology at a monitoring site may also find this manual helpful.
This book is a tutorial designed to instruct the reader in use and application of immunochemical methods of analysis for environmental contaminants. A brief introduction describes basic principles and the advantages and disadvantages of the technology, and gives a listing of references which supply more detail. Preparation of the laboratory for use of this technology and the general scientific considerations prior to using the technology are discussed. Detailed step-wise procedures are given for analysis of selected analytes, triazine herbicides, carbaryl, paraquat, and p-nitrophenols, etc. In addition to the specific immunoassay methods, a series of support techniques necessary to perform immunochemical methods are described.
This book provides specific instruction for certain analytes, but also serves to familiarize the novice reader with many generic concepts needed to successfully utilize immunochemistry technology including: applications, sampling, sample preparation, extraction, cleanup, quality assurance, methods development and optimization, data handling and troubleshooting. It is not necessary for the reader to actually perform the immunoassays given in this User's Guide to obtain familiarity with these concepts. The Guide is written so that the information presented can be applied to other immunoassays not given here. Thus, the strength of the Guide is its universal applicability to immunoassay methods.
