Few other economists have been read and cited as often as R.H. Coase has been, even though, as he admits, "most economists have a different way of looking at economic problems and do not share my conception of the nature of our subject." Coase's particular interest has been that part of economic theory that deals with firms, industries, and markets—what is known as price theory or microeconomics. He has always urged his fellow economists to examine the foundations on which their theory exists, and this volume collects some of his classic articles probing those very foundations. "The Nature of the Firm" (1937) introduced the then-revolutionary concept of transaction costs into economic theory. "The Problem of Social Cost" (1960) further developed this concept, emphasizing the effect of the law on the working of the economic system. The remaining papers and new introductory essay clarify and extend Coarse's arguments and address his critics.

Fifty years of Coase.......2006-07-24

A wonderful enrichment of Coase's seminal "The Nature of the Firm" with essays by Coase himself that explicate clearer the background that lead to his development of that theory as well as his reflections fifty years later that add significant breadth to half of the issues missed in this original treatise. Some of the other essays are less interesting and not as well stated or, to my mind, accurate; but do add some additional insight that one wishing better to understand the approach taken by Coase needs to have in order to undertake further analysis in this direction.

Coase is certainly worthy of his Nobel.......2005-08-14

This book is a reprint of several of Coase's previous works together with an introduction that links them. This line of thinking is very productive for framing solutions to various problems, economic, social, political, and legal. Well worth reading.

Brilliant But No Longer Revolutionary.......2005-05-30

Two of the essays in this short book -- "The Nature of the Firm" and "The Problem of Social Cost" -- are classic pieces of economic analysis. Together they practically created the field of law and economics. Unfortunately, the central ideas (for which Coase won the Nobel prize) have been so thoroughly integrated into economics curricula that they no longer seem fresh or novel; in fact, they are now almost humdrum economic "common sense."

That's a tribute to Coase and his impact on economic thinking, but it does make it hard for the reader to get excited about this book. Nevertheless, Coase's writing still has great value as a model of clear exposition, and it reminds us that simple, non-mathematical thought experiments can profoundly shape our view of economics. Any well-stocked economics library must include "The Firm, the Market, and the Law." Highly recommended.

Lucid essays on transaction costs and social welfare.......2004-01-06

This little book is a fantastic introduction to some of the powerful ideas introduced by Coase. Coase initiated two different ideas that today govern or inform much of the work of economists. The first was his introduction of the idea of "transaction costs", from an article suggesting an investigation into the root causes for industrial organization. The second is now known as the Coase Theorem, and stems from his insightful refutation of the Pigouvian view of social cost. There is also an article investigating the actual history of lighthouses in England, something which has usually been cited as a pure public good, and therefore requiring government provision. The history shows that most lighthouses - in some periods, all lighthouses - were privately provided. Coase's writing is lucid, his ideas profound, and his influence widespread. This collection is very important to anyone wanting to understand externalities, transaction costs, and social welfare.

Immunochemistry has broad applications for a wide variety of environmental contaminants. However, the potential for applying immunochemical methods to environmental measurements is just beginning to be realized. Immunochemical methods are based on specific antibodies combining with their target analyte(s). Many specific antibodies have been produced for targets of environmental and human health concern. Such antibodies can be configured into various analytical methods. The most popular Immunochemical technique in environmental analyses today is immunoassay. Immunoassays have been shown to detect and quantify many compounds of environmental interest such as pesticides, industrial chemicals, and products of xenobiotic metabolism. Among the most important advantages of immunoassays are their speed, sensitivity, selectivity and cost-effectiveness.

Immunochemical methods for the analysis of environmental contaminants are relatively new on the analytical chemistry scene. These methods are based on the use of a specific antibody as a detector for the analyte of interest. Immunoassays are rapid, sensitive, and selective, and are generally cost effective for large sample loads. They have been applied to diverse chemical structures (i.e., triazines, sulfonylureas, organo-phosphates, polychlorinated biphenyls, cyclodienes) and are adaptable to field use. These characteristics make immunochemical analysis a valuable tool for use by the environmental analytical chemist. This document is designed to facilitate the transfer of this valuable technology to the environmental analytical chemistry laboratory. Field personnel who may need to employ a measurement technology at a monitoring site may also find this manual helpful.

This book is a tutorial designed to instruct the reader in use and application of immunochemical methods of analysis for environmental contaminants. A brief introduction describes basic principles and the advantages and disadvantages of the technology, and gives a listing of references which supply more detail. Preparation of the laboratory for use of this technology and the general scientific considerations prior to using the technology are discussed. Detailed step-wise procedures are given for analysis of selected analytes, triazine herbicides, carbaryl, paraquat, and p-nitrophenols, etc. In addition to the specific immunoassay methods, a series of support techniques necessary to perform immunochemical methods are described.

This book provides specific instruction for certain analytes, but also serves to familiarize the novice reader with many generic concepts needed to successfully utilize immunochemistry technology including: applications, sampling, sample preparation, extraction, cleanup, quality assurance, methods development and optimization, data handling and troubleshooting. It is not necessary for the reader to actually perform the immunoassays given in this User's Guide to obtain familiarity with these concepts. The Guide is written so that the information presented can be applied to other immunoassays not given here. Thus, the strength of the Guide is its universal applicability to immunoassay methods.

This book is a little treasure - something that you can consume on a rainy afternoon and will leave you bubbling with creative ideas. I enjoyed "Succulent Wild Women" more but this one is still ranked as one of my fav books!

Some good inspiration but..........2007-02-24

There are some meaningful messages in the book. But overall I felt the author was not bringing anything new to the table except hard-to-read doodles. She makes herself sounds like a former lazy bum who is now getting rich off doodling and painting. How nice. The doodles and handwriting really mask the message the book is supposed to convey. But hey, it's a shtick.

Great SARK!.......2006-01-18

This isn't a new book (it was published in 1992). In some ways it isn't even a book at all. Yes it is shaped like a book and comes in a book-like binding. But it is more like a hand written (yes it is produced in the author's hand writing) journal and a collection of water color art than a traditional book.

The book is written by Sark, a highly creative and inspiring woman who shares in this book ways to be inspired and to increase your creativity. Here are the opening lines from the foreword, which seems to capture the essence of the book:

"This book is food for your soul, and a bubble bath for your spirit! It is a guide to keeping your creativity alive, and I wrote it for you."

This isn't a book to sit in read in one sitting, though I have done that. It is a book to pick up, read, ponder, put down and marvel at. It is worth buying for the words, it is worth buying for the format, and it is worth buying for the art.

I picked it off of my shelf today to write this recommendation, and I'm sure I will read some or all of it before it gets back to my shelf.

It is that kind of book.

Buying SARK? Buy this........2005-06-02

I have been a huge SARK fan for as long as I can remember, and have read and enjoyed all her marvellously and divinely coloured works.

So, as much as I am inspired by her and the work she has done, I honestly believe that her earlier works are much more relevant, beautiful and divine than her latter ones. While I would absolutely recommend that everyone purchase a copy of 'Eat Mangoes Naked' and other titles, I can't help but tire slightly of her SARK font, when her actual writing was one of the most delicious parts about her books. I guess I feel that the true beauty of SARK is so much more accessible within her earlier works, such as this, whereas the latter ones are undoubtedly that much more commericalised and repetitive.

Along with 'Living Juicy', I believe that this is the best of the lot. The stories are absolutely divine and inspiring, the drawings and colours vulnerable and lovable.

What a truly life-changing find this work is.
