Although not the best reference for a Published by Kinko's magazine, this is a wonderful resource for someone who's serious about getting into the business or is already there. It's the book you'll pull off the shelf once a year to read - and refresh your magazine's focus. A comprehensive and thoughtful ground-up look at the business. Writers wishing to break into magazine work would do well to read this first.

I pretty much thought I had read all the best books concerning starting a new magazine or getting work within the industry. Then, I found The Magazine From Cover To Cover.
This book will grab you in such a manner as does your favorite magazine.
Interested in magazine historical trends? Read chapters 3 and 4.
Why are magazines important? Or, better yet, how can attitudes be changed by magazines? Re-read chapters 3 and 4, then go on to read chapters 11 and 12 BEFORE you screw up!
This book probably does a better job than most others in showing why magazines have been important; how they can lead a revolution in society; what layout design and what editorial tone should be taken to appeal to your audience; and, especially, why doing that which gains notoriety may not be wise ethically, morally or financially.
This is a terrific book with the look and feel and dynamic spirit of a magazine.

Verry comprehansive and useful. It was the first book about magazines I've read. I have read 5 books about publishing and starting magazine. It is the best. I publish magazine "Education and Career" a tousands miles away from USA /Bulgaria/ and use this book like bible. Tanks to autors.

People like to believe in a past golden age of `traditional' English countryside, before large farms, machinery, and the destruction of hedgerows changed the landscape forever. However, that countryside may have looked both more and less familiar than we imagine. Take, for example, today's startling yellow fields of rapeseed, seemingly more suited to the landscape of Van Gogh than Constable. They were in fact, thoroughly familiar to fieldworkers in seventeenth-century England. At the same time, some features that would have gone unremarked in the past now seem like oddities. In the fifteenth century, rabbits were reared in specially guarded warrens as luxury food for rich men's tables; whilst houses had moats not only to defence but to provide a source of fresh fish. In the 1500s we find Catherine of Aragon introducing the concept of fresh salad to the court of Henry VIII; and in the 1600s, artichoke gardens became a fashion of the gentry in their hope of producing more male heirs. The common tomato, suspected of being poisonous in 1837, was transformed into a household vegetable by the end of the nineteenth century, thanks to cheaper glass-making methods and the resulting increase in glasshouses. In addition to these fascinating images of past lives, Joan Thirsk reveals how the forces which drive our current interest in alternative forms of agriculture - a glut of mainstream meat and cereal crops; changing patterns of diet; the needs of medicine - have striking parallels with earlier periods of our history. She warns us that today's decisions should not be made in a historical vacuum. We can still find solutions to today's problems in the hard-won experience of people in the past.

A little too brief to be of use.......2006-12-30
Mr Johnson tends to produce books which are too brief.
This one is 112 small pages with large margins.
What he discusses in the book is interesting and valuable but to achieve this level of brevity he assumes that the reader basically is quite clued in on the subject matter. For my tastes, I find he makes quite large jumps that I fail to follow, for example in the interpretation of folk tales and myths.
As an introductory overview leading to further reading of authors who flesh out the details, the book may have value, but I think I would rather just go directly to the details.
I find Marie-Louise Von Franz to be a much more useful author in terms of gaining insight into Jungian analysis and being able to apply it to my personal issues.
You must read this book.......1999-06-17
This book, quite simply, will redefine your relationships with women. You will examine how women fit into your life, and how you fit into theirs. An important book for the "men's movement" (if there still is one).

Beautifully designed, lacks mystique.......2003-12-27
This is the feel good book of the century as far as Red Sox retrospectives go -- a true Sox fan could only buy this book for the cover (or, as I did, for the great graphics inside). Beautifully designed throughout, this "official" retrospective lacks the heart of the Red Sox mystique: the need for card-carrying members of the Red Sox Nation to ultimately mourn the great losses endured over the past 100 years and still believe. I had to crack open Shaughnessy's "The Curse of the Bambino" to right myself.
Grand Slam.......2002-04-12
Ken Leiker, Alan Schwarz, and Mark Vancil wrote this book The Boston Red Sox. Although these people wrote a lot of this book, the Red Sox players themselves had a lot to say. This book was about the Red sox team, and Fenway Park. A major is about past red sox players, and the stars on the team in 2001. There was a lot of good information and statistics on the players. For instance did you know that, after the game in Fenway Park some of the away teams go into the Green Monster scoreboard, and sign there names. This book wasn't a book that would drag on, each page told another great fact, or quote. The photography was incredible. Nice clear, easy to see colors, and some very exciting action shots. Read it if you like baseball, and he Boston Red Sox. This book was a home run; I highly suggest you purchase this book.

Let me add my 2¢ (for 2 stars). The pictures are great, only it would have been nice to know WHO the pictures were of. I thought it would be a 100 year history, but I was wrong. What they wrote about was informative, heart-tugging and interesting. There just wasn't enough of it to justify the subtitle "100 years. The Official Retrospective."

My husband wanted this book because he's a big sports fan. The $50 price-tag seemed high until I saw the book and how much research the author poured into it. Now I'm wondering why the book doesn't cost $100 instead!
Anyone you can think of is in this book from politicians, sports figures, actors, actresses, singers, bands, etc. This books is updated for 2007 so it's recommended that you AVOID the cheaper, older books and get this one.
I wish they would have provided a more thorough, detailed synopsis of this book on the Amazon description page otherwise I would have purchased it months ago!

So far I have gotten 3 autographed photos from celebrities. I am eagerly awaiting more.
This is the best celebrity address book I have ever gotten. I have been collecting celebrity autographs for about 10 years now, and this is by far the most extensive and complete address book out there.
However- if you are looking for the home addresses of celebrities- you will be out of luck in this case. Most of the addresses are for their agents/talent agencies/casting companies. I would highly doubt that there is a book which has celebrities home addresses. However that would be cool.

This is my first contact with Powell/Svendsen's books, and while it is indeed coffee table size (it needs to be large to accommodate the beautiful photography)it is so charming and readable that, without so intending, I READ it (in one sitting, yet). We have several other books of gorgeous bungalows, many with the same houses as subjects, with accomanying commentary equivalent to dry stale cornflakes; this one is crumpets and cream. Like others documenting bungalow style architecture, this book is not intended as a construction or instruction manual, but as inspiration. For admirers of bungalow style and for those seeking a picture to replace the thousand words BUNGALOW is an easy choice.

This book is lovely to look at with marvelous pictures. A great 'coffeetable book. My only complaint is that it is light on 'how to' information.
