Book Description

Globalization is all around us. From the richest country to the poorest, every aspect of life is affected by global economics and communications. We all benefit...or do we?

This No-Nonsense Guide to Globalization distills the arguments into a clear, concise commentary. It examines the debt trap, the acceleration of neo-liberalism and the "free trade" model, competition for energy resources, and the links between the war on terror, the arms trade, and privatization. It looks at civil society alternatives to corporate globalization and the latest trade justice initiatives.

4 out of 5 stars over all pretty ok.......2006-11-10

Nothing to brag about, but no complaints either. Shipping was good, price good, service ok.

4 out of 5 stars a pivotal volume in a great series.......2003-10-18

If you like leftist Canadian thinkers like John Raulston Saul or Linda McQuaig, you'll love this handy little book. It is less obtrusively philosophical than Saul, less earthily anecdotal than McQuaig, but squarely in their broad line of thought.

Albeit in a somewhat muted and oblique way, the volume makes it clear that in its root impulses, globalization is an Anglo-Saxon phenomenon: Nixon's abandonment of the gold standard in 1973, Thatcher's coming to power in the UK in 1978.

It is odd for a Canadian based series that the major Canadian player of this era - our dear, late PET, despised by Nixon, Regan, Thatcher -- isn't even in the index.

Useful facts: the WTO is founded in 1994; its major instrument becomes the 1997 MAI (Multilateral Agreement on Investment). David Korten features heavily in the debate (his mid-90s WHEN CORPORATIONS RULE THE WORLD is not in the bibliography, even if a 1997 follow-up, THE POST-CORPORATE WORLD, is present). What is perhaps the book's most clutching assertion (one Korten had made more or less made in that earlier volume) is on page 73: "For every dollar that is needed to facilitate the trade in real goods, nine dollars is gambled in foreign exchange markets."

5 out of 5 stars Concise, entertaining guide to complex issues.......2001-06-23

This is a great intro to corporate globalism, and also a good refresher for the more educated folk. Ellwood wonderfully and consicesly gives a quick history of globalization (ie economic colonialism)describes the Bretton Woods Trio, explains and the problems with the rise of speculative investments, among others. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Book Description

The uproar at the World Trade Organization conference in Seattle focused attention on the conflict between the mainly western-owned global corporations and the poorer nations whose natural resources and cheap manpower sustain corporate profits, and who are also the unwilling purchasers of overpriced and inappropriate goods. In this book David Ransom vividly reveals the realities of trade as experienced by coffee-growers in Central America or the workers making jeans in Bangladesh sweatshops. He examines the roles played by the WTO, UNCTAD, ILO, IMF, G7, and other powerful organizations hiding behind bland initials. Even when their motives are benevolent, he argues, their activities are often inadequate and misguided.

About the No Nonsense Guides: Major issues facing the world today, complex as they are, are further obfuscated—often deliberately—by political and corporate jargon and media spin. By contrast, New Internationalist Magazine has been a leading source of reliable information and clear analysis for the last twenty years. This new Verso series of No Nonsense Guides, published in conjunction with New Internationalist, cuts through the confusion to present the facts and arguments concerning contemporary global issues as accessibly as possible. Concise, comprehensive, and affordable, the No Nonsense Guides will be of interest to busy people, from school age on, who want to know how the world works.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Fair book at best on a crucial topic.......2004-05-05

This is the weakest of the seven no-nonsense guides I have perused so far. Unless you already know quite a bit about fair trade (including the specific examples used in the book) the book is very confusing. To be honest, I am surprised this got past the editors at New Internationalist and Verso. The first chapter, on Chiapas, Mexico, is utterly nonsense (in direct violation of the series title!). It does, however, get a little clearer from there on.
My other complaint is that the author portrays fair trade as a something of a panacea solution to the ills of the non-western world, at least right up until the last chapters. Fair trade, at best, will be one small part of a much larger solution to the disparities between the rich and poor of the world. This book gives something of a disingenuous "good news" feel, as for now, while fair trade is creating some opportunities for a lucky few in the Global South, what it's been really effective at is producing a target niche market for guilt-ridden consumers in the North. Don't get me wrong, we should all feel guilty about our complicity in the problems of the South, and buying fair trade is one small thing each of us can do. But my hunch is that there are folks out there who feel like they're "saving" the world through fair trade purchasing, making it for some, no doubt, yet another conscience-tonic for the well-off.

            5 out of 5 stars Surprised the game's market isn't larger.......2007-10-06

Guzzo's book brought back great memories when I played Strat-O-Matic baseball with my high school friends 40 years ago. After reading the book, I went back to my old strat-o-matic cards, bought some new ones and enjoy playing as a hobby away from my professional bookkeeping and tax work. Whenever the chance comes I show the game to young sons of our friends. They love it! Even my teenage daughter finds it interesting. I am amazed the game after 40+ years is not as well known as other board games like Monopoly. I think an effective marketing campaign would turn on many more baseball fans and increase the number of "fanatics"!

            5 out of 5 stars Deserves a broader audience.......2007-01-16

Strat-O-Matic Fanatics would, at first glance, seem to be of interest only to the small group of die hard enthusiasts who play, and are passionate about, Strat-O-Matic Baseball and want to know how it came to be.

Readers are treated to a riveting story, however, about a very shy boy who found solace from his chaotic household surroundings by inventing a game with dice and cards that replicated baseball. Not only is the creator's (Hal Richman) story vividly told, it is done so with a great deal of sensitivity and insight. In addition to being a very personal story, it is also a fascinating tale of the formation of a beloeved small business that has managed to survive despite the entry bigger, better funded competitors, due to careful attention to and understanding of the marketplace and its customers.

Sadly, few people who don't play Strat will give this book a chance, but anyone could find something to enjoy in this book (for those who DO play the game, its really a must read).

NB: The book is well written, despite what a few other reviews state. I'm already looking forward to Guzzo's next book on baseball statistics.

5 out of 5 stars a must for strat heads.......2006-07-11

if you've ever caught the strat bug, this book is for you. a behind the scenes look at the history of the game and the story of the man behind it.

5 out of 5 stars A truly classic book about the greatest baseball board game ever.......2006-05-02

Quite simply, Guzzo has written a masterpiece capturing, in eye-opening detail, the complete history and progression of the venerable Strat-O-Matic family of sports board games. Not only does this book lay out, with great relish, how this game company grew from nothing in 1961 to competing with and fighting off challenges from big dudes like Sports Illustrated, EA Games, et al, during the past 30 years.

This book doesn't just mechanically spit out dates, etc. but rather it delves into the very personal reasons *why* Hal Richman started this fine company. I found myself cheering for Hal while reading of each of his struggles and roadblocks encountered in trying to get this company off the ground in the beginning, and also really feeling for the man and realizing that this game is indeed a part of him and not just a product that he is marketing & selling for $$$.

The book also goes over a lengthy treatise on current and past fans of Strat-O-Matic and really does a fine job of capturing the passion that all Strat gamers feel in their very guts when they play this game. There are tributes to infamous current and past Strat players (Chris Rosen, Tom Swank, etc.)

If you love Strat, or have played it at one time in your life, you need to own this book. I'm serious. If you've played any kind of sports simulation in your life, you still need to own this book.

            Bravo, Glenn, bravo.

            4 out of 5 stars Strat-o-matic Fanatics.......2006-03-13

It was very touching story. Also brought back many fond memories, my own interest in sports strategy gaming had the same roots as Mr. Richman's. Escaping from an overbearing parent.

Legal research and writing texts tend to be lame and of little help. (As best as I can tell, learning to research and write well is something you pretty much have to get from trial and error.)

This book, however, is well within the tradition of Elements of Style. It's easy-to-read, light, and practical.

I teach legal writing, and I recommend this book. It accomplishes more in 140 pages than other books do in 300. It covers the basics of legal style in a readable, informal, and entertaining way. It gives practical advice for completing law school writing assignments--including citation tips. Plus it introduces students to objective legal analysis for memos and persuasive arguments for briefs. It's easy to read and understand.

Because this edition (the second) was published in 1992, it does need some updating; it's not as current as it could be on citation and questions presented.

Every Saturday night, Adam Carter, a senior, writes in his journal recalling the highlights (and lowlights) of the week just passed and looks forward to one coming up. This book shares those entries from mid-August - during which a tragic accident befalls his younger brother - until graduation in late May - when the wonder of all wonders occurs for him. Along the way Adam finds his first true love and has very successful football and baseball seasons. His overriding concern is the care and rehabilitation of his brother's spinal injury. The reader will enjoy the boys' humor, feel for them in their moments of sadness and despair, and appreciate their courage and unfaltering relationship.

              Book Description

In the decade since Fred Wiersema coauthored the #1 bestseller The Discipline of Market Leaders, a momentous shift has occured. We have entered an age of customer scarcity--an age in which exciting, often unorthodox companies are revolutionizing the global marketplace. In this path-cutting work, Wiersema provides new benchmarks for ranking businesses in this new economy and reveals the strategies that set winning companies apart.

After tracking 5,000 companies worldwide for over six years, Wiersema discovered that just a few hundred of these of these exert tremendous influence on the new economy. Here, he explains why traditional measures of competitive prowess no longer apply and, using new yardsticks, identifies today's 100 most influential businesses. With practical strategies for managers and investors, Wiersema then shows how to recognize and emulate these dynamic new market leaders.

1 out of 5 stars His other book is a classic this one's got issues.......2005-10-22

I listened to the audio CD's of this book. There are some insights that are valuable. Ultimately, what got me is that the magic formula (which seemed well grounded in data and analysis) brought to the forefront some companies that discredit this poor author - Namely ENRON.

They are praised in the book for doing all these right things. But ultimately when deceit and greed abound and institutions meant to safeguard and protect the free market from itself fail(or are corrupted by their own greed and deceit), grave harm is done to individuals, companies and can be potentially disastrous to national economies that lose the confidence of domestic and foreign investors.

THE RULES OF THE GAME NEED TO BE FOLLOWED AND TRUSTED or everything including this exhaustive analysis is a waste of talent, time, and treasure.

4 out of 5 stars How to win against fragmented markets and customer scarcity........2003-04-18

The value of customer service is known to almost every one of us. So, what is new about this book? More detail on how to win customers in these days of fragmented markets (mass media can't help us anymore) and customer scarcity (it's really product/service glut). The author studied the best 5,000 companies in the world and came up with some valuable information that we can copy from these market leaders.

The author starts out by establishing the evaluation criteria that got a company into the study and he coins two new terms to describe these criteria - sales growth index and market value index (details of these terms on pages 7-13 of the book).

The author then summarizes the industries in which all these companies fall under - Consumer Products, Media and Entertainment, Heavy Industry, Technology Products, Technology Services, Financial Services, and Other Industries (healthcare, consumer services, and other).

A whole chapter is then dedicated to why we are feeling a scarcity of customers. The author names the reasons for this sitaution (new realities) - competitors proliferate, all secrets are open secrets, innovation is universal, information overwhelmes and depreciates, easy growth makes hard times, customers have less time than ever. He does a good job of justifying these obvious reasons with some supporting data.

So, if the new realities are that harsh, how are the market leaders managing? The author describes FOUR STRATEGIES that seem to work for these market leaders in overcoming the obvious difficulties in these days of customer scarcity. The four strategies being -

              1. being the best and showing it
              2. the customers who can make or break you
              3. making sure customers 'get it'
              4. outsized ambition.

To support why the market leaders have adopted these strategies, the author then labels all customers as falling into four categories and spends 4 chapters explaining how to work each of these groups

              1. Searchers (eager to change and self-reliant)
              2. Collaborators (eager to change and ready for help)
              3. Streamliners (seeking stability and self-reliant)
              4. Delegators (seeking stability and ready for help)

The rest of the book consists of some case studies to reinforce the above mentioned concepts and ideas. Overall, a simple book to read and valuable information considering the source data (the top 5,000 companies in the world). The criteria that the author used to come up with this list does seem reasonable. The best part of the book is that this book was originally written before the dot com bubble burst. If the author's claims are true, the companies short-listed by using his criteria survived the burst (except a small percentage attributable to other factors)! We don't know if the author's claims are true that his list didn't change much (as the book was published after the burst even though he wrote it before the burst). But if they are true, it is valuable information for any business that plans on emerging from this gloomy economy as one of the market leaders. The ideas presented meet the common sense test, so we are following these ideas quite a bit in our new company to achieve success.

The book is definitely worthwhile to look at. There are so many books in this niche (business help) that it can be overwhelming for anyone to make any sense out of this glut. But this book is really such a quick read and the concepts are so simple and small in number that I think the 2-3 hours time spent is time well spent. Good luck and I hope you get something good out of this book!

1 out of 5 stars Not a lot of meat.......2001-12-19

I loved Discipline of Market Leaders. As a business owner I read and listen to a lot of books and Discipline of Market leaders was great. Unfortunately this follow up book by only one of the authors didn't have much to offer. Lots and lots of words but not much being said. There are a few nuggets of knowledge, as there are with most books, but unlike the Discipline of Market leaders that I went through 3 times and even took notes while going through it, this new book was just short of a waste of time. Wish I could say it was better...

3 out of 5 stars Tiny chunks of meat in a big pot.......2001-12-07

This book did have a few interesting observations about customers, however it was tedious wading through the pages and pages of descriptions, examples and flowerly language. It could have and should have been about 3/4 shorter. Good cure for insomnia.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, unfortunately the market moves too fast.......2001-11-22

Wiersema's book is based on a research theory that if you identify leading companies you should be able to extract lessons that should be applicable to other companies. This approach is behind works such as "Pursuit of Excellence" and "Built to Last". Unfortunately for Wiersema he conducted his research at the peak of the economic boom of the 1990's. This makes many of Wiesema's conclusions ring hollow in the face of weak customer demand, increasing competition and an uncertain future.

Wiersema's earlier book on Value Disciplines contributed early on to a move to core competency. This book represents an interesting academic exercise as to what was market leading in the 90's and less so on how to address current market realities and challenges.
