In recent years, people have begun to examine family dynamics for clues to individual success. Birth order, in particular, has been a favored explanation for the differences between siblings in everything from leadership skills to romantic conquests. Now Dalton Conley, a sociology professor at NYU, reveals that indeed our siblings may affect how our lives turn out, but not in the ways we might think. Conley made an effort not to simplify the very complex familial data collected by both the United States Census, a long-term study conducted by the University of Michigan, and the University of Chicago's General Social Survey. What he found was that the differences between siblings outweigh almost every other kind of difference between any two individuals in the United States. Every family has a pecking order independent of birth order, and the differences between siblings are magnified by poverty and disenfranchisement. In these situations, families invest in the sibling most likely to succeed, leading to stark divides, even class differences between family members. Oddly, the choice of successful sibling is made independent of birth order, parental attention, or innate talents, and becomes a tacit agreement among family members. Conley uses a plethora of examples, including Bill and Roger Clinton, to illustrate his findings, and readers will nod knowingly at many of the ubiquitous family behaviors that set siblings up for differing life paths. Ultimately, what The Pecking Order reveals is that there is no single factor that can predict one's success or failure in life, but that complex, multilayered familial dynamics play the biggest part in determining our fate. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

We want to think of the family as a haven, a sheltered port from the maelstrom of social forces that rip through our lives. Within the family, we like to think, everyone starts out on equal footing. And yet we see around us evidence that siblings all too often diverge widely in social status, wealth, and education. We think these are aberrant cases—the president and the drug addict, the professor and the convict. Surely in most families, in our families, all children will succeed equally, and when they don’t, we turn to one-dimensional answers to explain the discrepancy—birth order, for instance, or gender.

In this groundbreaking book, Dalton Conley shows us that inequality in families is not the exception but the norm. More than half of all income inequality in this country occurs not between families but within families. Children who grow up in the same house can—and frequently do—wind up on opposite sides of the class divide. In fact, the family itself is where much inequality is fostered and developed. In each family, there exists a pecking order among siblings, a status hierarchy. This pecking order is not necessarily determined by the natural abilities of each individual, and not even by the intentions or will of the parents. It is determined by the larger social forces that envelop the family: gender expectations, the economic cost of education, divorce, early loss of a parent, geographic mobility, religious and sexual orientation, trauma, and even arbitrary factors such as luck and accidents. Conley explores each of these topics, giving us a richly nuanced understanding that transforms the way we should look at the family as an institution of care, support, and comfort.

Drawing from the U.S. Census, from the General Social Survey conducted by the University of Chicago over the last thirty years, and from a landmark study that was launched in 1968 by the University of Michigan and that has been following five thousand families, Conley has irrefutable empirical evidence backing up his assertions. Enriched by countless anecdotes and stories garnered through years of interviews, this is a book that will forever alter our idea of family.

2 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2007-09-26

I had high hopes for this book, but it was a terrible disappointment. The author rambles on and on, citing different studies that do no more than state the obvious. I mean, everyone knows that children of parents with more resources have a better chance of success than children of parents that are struggling. I didn't need a book to point that one out. I really learned nothing new from this book, except that perhaps the author wanted to whine about his own childhood, especially in the last chapter.

2 out of 5 stars O Brother!.......2007-05-28

Better than many "birth-order" books -- Conley doesn't claim to explain everything. But he still has a case to present, and this is a botched job.

The writing style will change twice within a single paragraph, from professional to personal, and back again. Anecdotal in the extreme, but the author cherry-picks statistics and selected studies when it suits his purpose (divorce is bad, but, hey, it can be great for some kids, maybe mine).

And in the rather absurd Marxist economic outlook, an anti-religion bent, a freeze-dried hippie longing for the 1960s, a surprising lack of focus on child gender, some easily discovered factual errors (Bill Clinton WAS NOT 12 when he met JFK), and the result reminds you of a rather longihs article in a supermarket checkout rack magazine.

3 out of 5 stars Not very meaty.......2006-03-14

The premise of this book really draws you in, especially if you've read anything on the subject of family dynamics and development. There are some very interesting observations on, and in some cases contradictions of, popular ideas. I definitely found myself considering my own childhood, and I can certainly see how this book would stir the mind of parents. Unfortunately, I was left wanting. There are very few actual conclusions made by the author despite the numerous anecdotes used to (supposedly) present his arguments.

5 out of 5 stars You'll never look at your own family the same way again.......2005-10-18

Conley's main point is that if you really want to improve your child's future, the best way to do it is to limit the number of his siblings. This strikes me as a result that vast numbers of Americans, not to mention people elsewhere, would do well to heed. I constantly hear people people in the news complain that they can't support their families as they would like to, asking for government help. Then you find out that they have four children, or six, or ten. Well, duh!

At times this book seemed like a tour through my own family dynamics. I am the youngest of seven brothers and sisters. In my experience it is quite true that family resources get spread very thin in that situation.

2 out of 5 stars Which Siblings Succedd and Why.......2005-09-12

I rate this book a two only because I am giving it the benefit of a doubt that it has to get better the more you read!? I think the subject matter is interesting, however, it might be more suitable for a magazine article. This book was much too much like reading a textbook, and I several times I had to reread paragraphs hoping to get more meaning from them. I could not make it through the whole book.

      Book Description

To compete in today's business environment, corporations must be globally responsive--particularly when it comes to the often-neglected task of human resource management. HR executives must view policies and practices from the host country's standpoint, not just their own. Dr. Duane argues this point in his challenging new book. In doing so he provides a detailed comparative analysis of how the human resource function is planned and executed by corporations in four dominant areas of the world. Neither a superficial gloss nor a collection of readings but an integrated, easily accessed discussion and reference, Dr. Duane's book offers a persuasive argument against the most common practice of expatriate assigments. Scholars, researchers, and upper level students will find the book espcially enlightening. Their corporate counterparts in decision-making capacities will find it an especially useful tool. Duane begins by arguing that the success of multinational organizations depends on their ability to direct host-country operations effectively, and this includes the often-neglected task of how to manage people. He turns to the hotly contested debate over the use of expatriate assignments and argues that while these may have worked well in the past, they are now too expensive, too impractical, and thus they are becoming obsolete rapidly. He goes on to investigate human resource management systems in four important sections of the world: the U.S. and Canada, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the newly independent states, and the Middle East. Each chapter focuses on several crucial topics; among them, are the labor market context, the acquisitions and protection of human resources, and the management of labor relations. There is also an extensive appendix of Web page addresses where continuously updated information on the topics Duane covers can be obtained.

        Book Description

The semiarid plains of western Kansas and eastern Colorado are hardly the setting for an agricultural empire, but it was here that former field hand John Kriss managed G-K Farms for Wichita entrepreneur Ray Garvey. Their enterprise became one of the largest wheat operations on the plains and yielded Kriss a one million bushel crop. Harvesting the High Plains is the rags-to-riches story of how Kriss applied hard work and common sense to make large-scale farming work under the most adverse conditions. Drawing on correspondence between Kriss and Garvey, it tells how the two men had to make innumerable decisions about the purchase of expensive machinery and of ever larger tracts of land, and how Kriss kept detailed records of crops and rainfall to manage the land carefully, farming thousands of acres in an environmentally sensitive way and retaining a viable operation even during the Dust Bowl years. In chronicling the story of Kriss's success, historian Craig Miner provides a bold counterpoint to the argument that large, technology-based farming is inherently bad or that only small farmers can be conscientious stewards of the land. He sets his narrative in the context of local and agricultural history-as well as the Kriss family's own story-in order to document the transition to mechanized, specialized farming on the plains. He addresses philosophical and historical questions about the relation between agriculture and nature in a semiarid region, showing that G-K Farms managed to strike a remarkable balance between profit and ecology. He also suggests that G-K may even have done its region more economic good than small farms simply by staying in business during bad times. The Kriss family still works the land, and although their operation is huge, it still depends on traditional family farming values and approaches. Harvesting the High Plains provides keen insights into their special approach to large-scale farming and gives a human face to the faceless statistics of other agricultural studies.

          Book Description

Data archiving has, for many years, been the most disregarded aspect of all data systems. The increase in numbers of telescopes, both groundbased and space-borne, and the increase in efficiency of detectors have generated overwhelming amounts of data. Much of these data were and are not used on short timescales and (should) have been archived, where they can be used later and/or by others. Archiving is essential. Objects can change in the course of time. New technological or scientific developments might require observing objects again. The cost-benefit ratio will become more and more important when considering the allocation of telescope time. The retrieval of `old' data can then be crucial.
At present there are a number of data collections and data retrieval systems. This book includes a series of clear and up-to-date descriptions of many important available data systems.

I bought this book as an update for the original but have found it invaluable as an adjunct to the original text. When it comes to family research I cannot stress enough the need for it. Our generation is on the verge of losing our heritage and not passing it on to our children and grandchildren. Who we are is a direct result of who our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were. It takes so little time to write down names and birth dates. Trust me- it doesn't matter what your life was like growing up if you can't put it to paper and share it with someone you love. Even the bad things that may have happened don't change names and dates. Let your kids know where their grandparents came from. Let them know when their great-grandparents came to this country and WHY. Our ancestors left everything and started all over in a strange, new world. They did it for us. Don't ever forget and don't ever stop sharing. Use the tools in this book and put your information down and keep it for future generations. Utilize the knowledge of the genealogists that put this wonderful book together to help you achieve your goals. Catalog your treasures - even if they're not worth two cents. Money isn't everything - but the memories are.

I think this is a wonderful, helpful book for the beginning genealogist. I would have loved to have something like this when starting out. The inclusion of a CD rom with the forms makes the book worthwhile in its own. Each chapter really helps a new genealogist starting out to get organized. There are explanations of how to keep records and how to research. Anyone doing genealogy or teaching genealogy should have this on their bookshelf. The book even helps you get organized to write your family history.

3 out of 5 stars Bits 'n Pieces are useful.......2006-04-07

I agree with Michael K Smith's in-depth review. My very short impression is: The book contains useful information, but it is short on hard advice. If you've never considered how to file information, this book would be very useful.
However, I consider myself to be very organized and logical but I keep coming across a roadblock of how to organize female ancestors. When the female is a fairly close relative, I manage to remember the maiden name and cross-reference it to the married name. But what do I do with female relatives more than two generations back? (my mental limit). I'm not great at remembering computer-generated reference numbers. (And, my computer is not always on.) I need a way to track females based on names. I did not find any helpful hints. Perhaps this is a roadblock for everyone. I can only say I was dissappointed as I believe this is a common problem. There should be a solution in a book claiming to help organize info.
I did like the section on heirlooms, although it is pretty much common sense.

                Book Description

Imagine that you lived in a city made of steel and woke up one morning to discover the entire city had been turned to glass. Everything that had been opaque would be transparent, everything sturdy would be fragile. One false move, even the slightest slip and--boom!--everything around you could shatter.

Nowhere does this frightening image seem more real than in the realm of business-to-business commerce, where the Internet is recasting and remodeling nearly every existing relationship.

Although consumer marketers may have been first to launch Web-based, customer-centric initiatives, it is the business-to-business companies that have the most to gain.

They also have the most to lose by doggedly sticking with out-dated traditional market penetration strategies. In One to One B2B, marketing gurus Don Peppers and Martha Rogers argue persuasively that in the broad arena of business-to-business commerce, organizations will rise or fall on the basis of their abilities to cultivate one-to-one relationships with their customers.

In a series of richly detailed case studies, the authors paint vivid portraits of B2B organizations wrestling with front-burner issues such as channel complexity, customer valuation, account development, sales force automation, knowledge-based selling, and new modes of compensation.

And they squarely tackle the question of how much technology is too much, arguing that one shouldn't ask "How can you use technology to automate a relationship?" but ,rather, "How can you use technology to strengthen a relationship and make it more valuable over time?"

In One to One B2B, readers will discover the critical role a "learning relationship" plays in developing new and existing customers to their fullest potential, as well as strategies designed specifically to unlock higher levels of profitability, ensure client loyalty, and fight margin erosion in the face of intense global competition.

The result is an indispensable handbook on how to create and develop business-to-business sales and marketing techniques successfully in the bump and grind of the real world.

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy it - opt for "MANAGING CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS".......2005-01-27

Having worked in line management with relationship marketing for many years, Peppers & Rogers have inspired my thinking on "One-to-One" tremendously. I believe that Peppers & Rogers' most important contribution is to change a company's focus from customer acquisition to customer retention. That is: Stop spending all your money getting new customers and start spending more on keeping and growing existing customers.

But if you have high expectations - like I had back in 2001 -, then this book on "B2B One-to-One" will be a huge disappointment. The real good stuff on one-to-one is all found in the first part of the book. But even that is merely a summary of their previously published material.

The case stories - being the bulk of this book - are not very inspiring (except perhaps the inevitable Dell Premier case). I cannot recommend you wasting your time on them. They were already of poor value when published in 2001.

The only real value of "B2B One-to-One" is provided in few charts as well as a small table on page 64 of the book. Curiously, the authors do not expand on the table's valuable content. If you have read some of the authors' previous publications, you'll already be familiar with their core concept of the IDIC-model (Identify-Differentiate-Interact-Customize):

                Phase 1: IDENTIFY
What B2B firms typically do: Identify the most valuable customers by value. Know key contacts in the customer organization.
What B2B firms should do: Map all contacts in the customer organization. Map and remember every contact's influence on the buying process. Create a programme specifically targeting end-users.

                Phase 2: DIFFERENTIATE
What B2B firms typically do: Treat different customers differently. Provide superb service levels to the most valuable customers. Differentiate reactively on customers' expressed needs.
What B2B firms should do: Rank customers by lifetime value and strategic value (most growable customers!). Develop strategies for unprofitable customers. Differentiate proactively the handling of different needs-based customer categories.

                Phase 3: INTERACT
What B2B firms typically do: Keep interaction only via sales reps. Believe that sales reps will resist change towards sales automation or CRM initiatives because they see them as a threat. Restrict EDI to the largest customers.
What B2B firms should do: Remember interactions with the customer across all interaction points ... including the Internet. Compensate sales reps for reporting details on the customer interaction. Market the Internet as an alternative to EDI.

                Phase 4: CUSTOMIZE
What B2B firms typically do: Customize products and services on request from the largest customers on an ad-hoc basis. Develop and execute account plans.
What B2B firms should do: Mass-customize products and services by modularizing the production, delivery, and services processes. Make a template for handling individual customers by using a needs-based segmentation on a routinely basis. Develop and execute specific customer strategies - including strategies for individual contacts within the customer organization.

For the insight provided by this table's content, I rate the book 2 stars.

I recommend that you buy Peppers & Rogers 2004-publication "MANAGING CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS" instead. If you read my online review of that book, you'll see why.

Peppers & Rogers' "ONE TO ONE FIELDBOOK" (1999) is also highly recommended. It's a hands-on book with many checklists and inspiring tools for Monday morning. And it has a dual focus: Both B2C and B2B.

                5 out of 5 stars Will Be A Classic.......2001-09-14

Over the years, the Peppers and Rogers duo have made an outstanding contribution to the field of marketing and the process of developing relationships with customers. "One to One B2B" is yet another installment. This well-written book builds on their earlier works and does a great deal to define in a tangible fashion the new "customer relationship mentality" that is so essential for all organizations to consider in today's real economy. This book is thought-provoking and stimulating. It is evident that the authors who have pioneered the bulk of the original thinking underlying customer relationship management want to share their compelling philosophy. They are very convincing in citing numerous advantages that accrue to those who embrace their way of operating a business. And, this book seems to be committed to showing a straightforward, direct blueprint for implementation. The initial chapters of the book provide an updated version of the principles and philsophy found in their earlier works. These early chapters constitute a worthwhile review, but the also offer some different slants that are extremely valuable supplements. The later chapters are integral to the book's mission. The authors offer very detailed coverage of companies and organizations that have adopted the "one to one" way of doing business. The book provides detailed description in a case study format illustrating the steps of implementation and explaining the benefits associated with each implementation phase. In keeping with their well-established literary character, in the final section of their book Peppers and Rogers have an eye to the future they share with the reader. For example, they don't shy away from offering advice to Dell on future direction in light of the challenges posed by the current environment. And, they take time to weigh the eventual impact of a B2B world that is rapidly extending its scope, offering conjecture from their very informed perspectives. As an academician who has spent significant time studying the CRM movement and consulting with companies that embrace the same, this book definitely offers value and is a must read for anyone that is committed to preserving lasting customer relationships.

5 out of 5 stars So Obvious and Yet So Under-Appreciated.......2001-08-30

Those who have already read any of Peppers and Rogers' previous books (The One to One Future, Enterprise One to One, The One to One Fieldbook with Bob Dorf, and The One to One Manager) no doubt share my high regard for their uniquely creative as well as highly analytical thinking about CRM within the global marketplace. They continue to draw upon an abundance of real-world experience. This book may well be their most important thus far. In it, they suggest and then explain a number of strategies to create and then sustain solid relationships with B2B customers. Even if your organization is not currently involved in such relationships, these same strategies can also be of substantial value. Once again, the authors' essential idea (hardly original, they realize) is that businesses as well as most other human communities (e.g. a political constituency, a religious following, a military force) share at least this in common: Each is built one believer at a time to serve mutual self-interests. In this sense, the term "B2B" is a misnomer because people do business with other people. (Rest assured, I fully understand the differences between and among B2B, B2C, and B2B2C.) Even when purchases are completed electronically, they are initiated and fulfilled by people. Goods are manufactured by people. Services are provided by people. And so forth.

Over the years, when customers have been asked to cross-rank attributes of greatest importance to them, "Feeling Appreciated" and "Convenience" or "Ease of Doing Business" are either #1 or #2. (Remarkably, "Price" is usually ranked between 9th and 14th in order of importance.) It is also worth noting that, as Peppers and Rogers carefully explain in this book, as new efficiencies are created by breakthrough technologies, the quality of one-to-one human interaction becomes even more important. They include five case studies, including one which examines the policies and procedures of Dell Computer. Somehow, they gained access to information which is probably otherwise unavailable, except to those involved in the Dell organization. Each of the case studies reads as if it were a one-act play. However different their "characters" and "plot" may be, all five companies are literally customer-driven. Their ultimate objective is not to achieve "customer satisfaction"; rather, as Jeffrey Gitomer and others have insisted, their ultimate objective is sustainable "customer loyalty" (indeed "customer passion"). Peppers and Rogers provide a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective system to achieve that objective. They would be the first to recommend that each reader make appropriate modifications of that system to accommodate the specific CRM needs, interests, and resources of her or his own organization.

Earlier, I suggested that this may well be the most important book Peppers and Rogers have written thus far. The system they provide in it is worthless, however, unless and until an organization involved in B2B is wholly committed (top to bottom) to doing everything possible to make each customer feel appreciated. One of the best strategies to accomplish that is to make doing business with it as convenient (as "easy") as possible.

Here's another key point. Based on my own extensive experience working closely with all manner of organizations, I have become convinced that organizations cannot be "customer-driven" unless they are first "employee/associate-driven." Those who feel mistreated cannot be expected to treat others well. Therefore, effective CRM depends almost entirely on the quality of relationships within a given organization...and each of them is also, inevitably, one-to-one.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-07-16

After reading many books about CRM/Marketing One-One, my opinion is this book has to be read as soon as possible. You might have read others like me but this one is a plus. Buy it, read it, apply it, let it pass 6 months, then read it again. Finally, post here how much it helped you. It includes pratical stuff (case studies) of leading companies (Dell, Convergys, etc). This book has to be seen as a complement to others previously written by same authors.

5 out of 5 stars Great Survival Handbook for CRM.......2001-07-02

Peppers & Rogers are definitely the heavyweight champions of customer-centric marketing. This new book continues their odyssey from theory to practice. Each of the case studies are like mini-novels, complete with plot twists and cliff-hangers. For a business book, this is exceptionally well written and very accessible. It's a good read, for newcomers and experienced one-to-one marketers.

Peppers' & Rogers' stories are fresh and unique. Even the chapter about Dell reveals aspects of that company that are rarely discussed with outsiders. It's amazing that they were able to get such detail from companies that are usually tight-lipped about their CRM strategies. Worthwhile reading for managers who need to go beyond CRM hype and learn from the real, and sometimes painful, experiences of others. This book is well-researched and crisply written.

3 out of 5 stars Important Voice but Naive Faith.......1999-10-22

This book is a more political version of Ben Barber's Jihad vs. McWorld. It is thorough and broad on the Political/Economic front, and rather weak on the cultural front. The authors have a good understanding of the unchecked and immorally wielded power of the IMF, and see a margin of hope in strategic cooperation of NGOs. I believe their faith in the potential of these groups to effectively challenge the powers is naive, and could be refined with a deeper understanding of the totalitanian participation of mass culture in the designs of the IMF. Culture is a powerful shaper of worldview, and is inherently conservative (In the sense of resistant to evolution). A holistic approach is needed. Global Pillage is an important book, and is fairly readable, but would be hard for a newcomer to the movement to understand. It is well researched and thoughtful, and successfully avoids any taste of Ivory Tower irrelevance. I recommend this book, with the warning that real change will require a holistic cooperation to engage the society beyond the political realm.

5 out of 5 stars Countering the race to the bottom.......1998-07-10

This book combines perfectly the thorough criticism of academic literature and the accessibility of popular writing to clearly communicate how multinational corporations have played different population bases against one another and what those groups are doing to build a common set of standards to counter the race to the bottom. Written in plain language with hundreds of citations, Global Village is a book that unites scholar and layperson in an exploration of the spreading marketplace while avoiding both dogma and tediousness.

                      Book Description

Because of the close links between the United States and Japan in trade, foreign direct investment, financial flows, exchange rates, international prices, and government policies, it is important to develop a better understanding of these links and how they may be turned to the advantage of all involved by improvements in the international policy environment. This book deals with the potential for such improvements as part of formal government-to-government negotiations in the multilateral context in the World Trade Organization (WTO), regionally in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, and bilaterally with the administration of national trade laws and the negotiation of free trade agreements.
The chapters represent a spectrum of approaches, including theoretical analysis, quantitative measurement, and evaluations of policies and institutions from economic and legal perspectives. The multi-lateral issues cover the analysis of the economic effects of a new WTO negotiating round and the range of issues that are to be addressed there, including reform of Japan's agricultural policies, services liberalization, antidumping, intellectual property rights, and trade and the environment. The regional issues include theoretical and simulation analysis of the benefits of preferential trading arrangements and the policy of open regionalism that is being sought by APEC members. U.S.-Japan bilateral relations are studied by analyzing the major actions and positions taken by the two nations in the context of their national trade laws and policies, how trade policies are implemented, the effects of bilateral trade agreements on the United States and Japan, and the interplay of legal decisions reached in WTO actions with bilateral and unilateral measures undertaken by the two nations.
The book is designed for a broad audience consisting of academic economists, lawyers, policymakers, and students interested in U.S.-Japan international economic relations.
Robert M. Stern is Professor Emeritus of Economics and Public Policy, University of Michigan.
