Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a Bible for IDOCs.......2002-11-22

By far, the best book on IDOCs that I have come across. A precise, succinct and down-to-earth literature for picking up skills on ALE/EDI-IDOCs, this book also carries a very user-friendly, real-time and pragmatic approach to learning IDOCs. With an SAP System besides, this book took me just a couple of hours to master the whole of it.

The book starts with a remark - IDOCs are simple to learn, tough to explain. But the authors have dispelled the notion, disproving it totally. It is a handy book for developers/consultants, and I think it is a bare necessity for Project Managers. The time estimate given in the book for accomplishing EDI Solutions stands as a great enlightener for the Project Managers with Integration Projects at hand.

On a scale of one to five stars, this book very badly needs a ten.

5 out of 5 stars Best book about IDOCs/ALE.......2002-09-24

Easy to read and excellent in examples.
The best book about IDOCs/ALE.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference Source for EDI interfaces.......2002-06-07

Excellent reference source for consultants learning about the EDI interface and ALE. The book gives real world answers and cuts straight to the heart of the matter. I highly recommend the book for consultants working on the subsystem side as well as those consultants working EDI on the SAP side of the project.

4 out of 5 stars Best book - if you're experienced.......2002-05-16

This is the best book of the 3 available IDOC/ALE titles - but just for professionals, who want to get the essentials for the IDOC/ALE interface, and how to use workflow in that context.
It's thin (120 pages ?), but it focuses on the real important facts and informations.
It has just small chapters of explanation. But if you're familiar with SAP it's the best to get the issue in a very short time but almost complete.

(for SAP-beginners I would rather recommend the book from A. Nagpal et al)

3 out of 5 stars Very good information -- but grade school translation.......2000-11-14

There is quite valuable information for both EDI developers and project management leads smattered within -- my bias being from a project managment standpoint. The material is possibly worthy of four (possibly even five!) stars, but is presented quasi-reference style (read: haphazardly), in asides, and sprinkled liberally with anecdotes, quotations, and amateur pen and ink drawings. The writing style is informal, practically conversational at times, and, in small doses, refreshing. I'd be more than interested in seeing a review of the original German text... maybe it works better in the native tongue...

But the sad truth is this book was/is extremely difficult to read -- the translation from German is quite poor, almost unbelievably so at times. It's almost as if the original text was run through translation software and published as such without ever once being viewed by a native English-speaker. If Vieweg is truly interested in publishing to the English-speaking technical market, they may want to invest in SOMEONE with fluency in English so they can perform even a rudimentary edit of the material prior to publication.

Should have known when the reply card (nur auf Deutsch!) fell out of the book upon opening that this was going to be one of those challenge reads!

4 out of 5 stars Great Source of Information of Countries and Ports of Entry.......1998-01-16

This is a well structured book that provides a one stop source of information on port of entry procedures among other thing. However with that said. I have just returned from the Leeward Islands and found the entry procedures have completely changed. No longer do you fly the Q flag and wait, but the skipper can proceed directly to customs and immigrations. This is no doubt due to the increased yacht traffic. So talk with other yachts going to or coming from your destination to get the latest information on entry and clearance information.

                      Book Description

Clones of Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz. A robotic housekeeper who makes your bed every morning. A permanent size 6 figure. These are all just fantasies . . . or are they? How much do you really know about gene therapy, artificial intelligence, and bionic modification?
In How to Clone the Perfect Blonde, award-winning journalists Sue Nelson and Richard Hollingham show how cutting-edge science will eventually make your wildest dreams come true. With amazing anecdotes and breezy humor, they describe the latest discoveries in biotechnology, quantum mechanics, cryogenics, nanotechnology, wormholes, and much more -- complete with ironic "instructions" on How to Build a Robotic Servant, How to Live Forever, How to Turn Back Time, and more. You'll be amazed to learn how many of these "fantasies" are already well within our reach.
In the tradition of bestselling pop-science books such as The Physics of Star Trek and How to Build a Time Machine, this entertaining read explores the science of science fiction -- and proves that anything is possible!

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting read, Cool stuff.......2005-08-11

I thought this was an excellent book!

It explore many fascinating futuristic concepts including cloning, genetic engineering, teleportation, artificial intelligence, and tim travel. It tries to break down convoluted concepts like quantum physics and wormholes into more simplistic language that your average Joe could understand. The book completely had my attention the whole way and it actually made me excited about the future (even though many/most of the concepts are pretty out of reach at the moment).

For the most part, relating the more convulted ideas to pop culture worked pretty well. Sometimes, however, they went on tangents talking about which TV show/movie they liked or disliked (uhh... who cares?). The best thing about the book is that you really get into science in general... from biology to physics to computers. And science is awesome. So buy the book!

1 out of 5 stars dumbed down science, humor is juvenile.......2005-04-21

Maybe this is a good book for science airheads and people who laugh easily but most of it didnt work for me. It was like reading a bad science article in USA today with lame jokes.

5 out of 5 stars How to Clone the Perfect Blonde.......2004-12-18

This is the best, and most humorous, science book I've ever read. It's not written for geeks, though they too will appreciate its wry humor. Instead, the authors approach science in a quite approachable way - asking and answering the questions that people on the steeet really have about today's mind-reeling scientific advances. It's easy to see why it was voted one of the best science books of the year on NPR's Science Friday program.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect gift for the curious reader.......2004-12-18

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book, and it doesn't disappoint. For anyone even mildly curious about science and the latest advances, this book highlights some of the most interesting and explores the possibilities -- and limits -- in understandable prose. The authors inject humor throughout, spicing up what others often make into dull, textbook explanations. From cloning to weight loss to time travel to life expectancy, these journalists have picked topics that touch on our everyday interests and present what we need to know in the most readable style I've found in any science-related material. This is a book for non-techies and science buffs alike, with solid information but an entertaining style. Anyone looking for a gift for a discerning reader should pick up a copy!

2 out of 5 stars Pop Science At Its Worst.......2004-12-14

Received as a present and typically enjoy pop science writing but this is too low-level for even me. In addition, I also could've lived without the authors opining.

Loyal customers are the most important asset of any company-more important than land, patents, equipment, or buildings. While finding new customers is often expensive, time-consuming, and ultimately unprofitable, retaining old customers is surprisingly easy and highly profitable. This book is not about slogans, banners, or promotions. It is about discovering and utilizing specific activities that will make your customers buy again and again...and tell the world why everyone else should buy from you too! Learning how to retain customers is important and profitable. Even a seemingly negligible increase in repeat business-just five percent-produces a whopping 60 percent increase in profits. Book Description

How are we to understand the politics of international monetary relations since the end of World War II? Exploiting recently declassified documents from both the United States and Europe and employing economic analysis and international relations theory, Francis Gavin offers a compelling reassessment of the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates and dollar-gold convertibility.

Gavin demonstrates that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, Bretton Woods was a highly politicized system that was prone to crisis and required constant intervention and controls to continue functioning. More important, postwar monetary relations were not a salve to political tensions, as is often contended. In fact, the politicization of the global payments system allowed nations to use monetary coercion to achieve political and security ends, causing deep conflicts within the Western Alliance. For the first time, Gavin reveals how these rifts dramatically affected U.S. political and military strategy during a dangerous period of the Cold War.

5 out of 5 stars A Deeply Unstable and Politicized Monetary System.......2005-12-11

Gavin's book departs in several ways from conventional wisdom. First, it has long been an article of faith that the Bretton Woods agreements were the cornerstone of an open, liberal international economic order that ensured financial stability, economic interdependence, and international cooperation. In fact, Gavin shows that Bretton Woods was an ineffective and crisis-prone monetary system. It began experiencing potentially fatal difficulties as early as the late 1950s, and was only kept alive by a series of political fixes that made little long-term, macroeconomic sense. It could never have survived the globalization of finance and the removal of capital controls that began to take place in the 1970s. Indeed, it can be argued that the system was doomed the moment that it came into existence, and that the Bretton Woods agreements contained fatal flaws that could only lead to the abandon of gold convertibility.

Second, there is a widely held view that the Bretton Woods system was designed to benefit the United States by allowing Americans to live beyond their means and by persuading central banks from Western Europe and from Japan to finance its external deficit through dollar holdings. The real story is that American policymakers had no great love for the Bretton Woods system. It was associated in their minds not with American hegemony, but with American vulnerability. The growing European balances, which, under the rules of the system, could be cashed in for gold at any time, were a kind of sword of Damocles hanging over their heads. Indeed, successive administrations toyed with the idea of abandoning the gold convertibility altogether. What prevented them from doing so was the fear that floating exchange rates would generate financial chaos and the return to the 1930s' beggar-thy-neighbor policies.

The third piece of conventional wisdom casts France in the role of the villain, trying to sabotage the system by converting its dollar reserves into gold, while it credits West Germany and the United Kingdom of more cooperative behavior. There is some truth in this story. De Gaulle certainly tried to spoil the game after 1965, when he espoused the crusade of economist Jacques Rueff and denounced the "exorbitant privilege" of the dollar. But if France was willing to call the bluff and end the dollar-exchange system, it never had the means to do much harm and was certainly unable to deliver the final blow, especially after mounting deficits and attacks on the Franc depleted its currency reserves at the end of the decade. Besides, other central banks also joined the fray and stealthily tried to convert their dollar balances into gold, sometimes as early as 1957. The relationship with West Germany was also fraught with political tensions, particularly regarding the offset arrangement that allowed the United States to compensate some of the cost of American troops stationed in Europe. And France was not always uncooperative: Gavin unveils from the archives a surprising episode of Franco-American cooperation over monetary affairs, when young Finance Minister Valéry Giscard d'Estaing convinced President Kennedy to create a task force aimed at reforming the international monetary system.

Gavin's central argument is that economic and monetary problems cannot be considered in isolation from the strategic and diplomatic policy issues in which they were often embedded. He sees the Bretton Woods system as central to the Cold War bargain in Europe which aimed at "keeping the Russians out, the Germans down, and the Americans in." He shows that strategy and finance were inextricably meshed and that U.S. officials often felt they had to sacrifice important domestic policy goals and strategic imperatives in order to maintain the dollar's value. Of particular concern were the mounting balance-of-payment deficits, which successive American presidents were willing to address by reducing America's overseas commitments and military obligations that they saw at the source of the country's economic profligacy. As incredible as it may seem, the policy alternatives were often cast as a choice between defending Europe or the dollar.

But it could be argued that it is precisely this lack of isolation of economics from the political which compounded the gold convertibility problem and prevented decision-makers to find a long-lasting solution to the conundrum of international monetary relations. One is struck by the abundance of political in-fighting, the frequency of inter-agency skirmishes and the high level of political attention that these seemingly technical, second-order issues generated. Kennedy was not the only president to be "obsessed with the balance of payments." The victim of these obsessions and confusion was, more often than not, sound economic reasoning. In fact, it took a Nixon to put monetary affairs squarely in the hands of the Treasury and to isolate them from the encroachments of other agencies and departments. Likewise, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing certainly remembered his conversation with President Kennedy when he proposed the idea of discussing economic and especially monetary problems in strictly limited meetings of heads of government, isolated from the diplomacy buffs and academic luminaries that had convinced de Gaulle to embark on his confrontational stance against the dollar's hegemony.

                                  Book Description

Global Production and Trade in East Asia focuses on the profound change that the traditional paradigm of production and international trade has undergone in the last two decades or so as a result of worldwide trade and investment liberalization. This ongoing transformation has been both aided and stimulated by advances in telecommunications, transportation, and information management. The liberalization of trade and investment on the one hand and advances in communications technology on the other have further promoted global production networks in which vertical stages of final goods are fragmented across countries. International fragmentation of production, which enables international division of labor not only in final products but also in vertically related components, is more evident than ever before.
The book documents the process of international production fragmentation and trade in East Asian economies, studies the mechanics of the process, explores the theory behind the phenomenon, and identifies important policy implications. It focuses on production fragmentation and trade in East Asia because this is the part of the world where the phenomenon is most visible. With contribution by well-known international economics scholars from North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific, the book distinguishes itself with high global quality and rich regional content. It achieves a fine balance between theory, policy, and empirical work.
This book will interest scholars of international trade, foreign investment and international business, regional specialists in East Asian economies, policymakers and advisors in international economic relations, and anyone else who follows important economic issues of globalization.
