Customer Reviews:
Reloading For Shotgunners misses the mark.......2007-03-29
Book index of loads is hard to use, lacks color photos of many shells and index does not match chapters or subject matter. Spend your money on something more useable.
What happened to the old standard?.......2006-03-15
After 4 once-per-decade editions of the Lyman Shotshell Handbook, I was disappointed to see them miss their 2005 deadline to produce another. A lot of changes had happened, the famous Win AA Compression formed hull is gone, lots of other powders and components introduced and obsolete, and no Handbook to guide us through it.
Well, this 5th Edition is now "Reloading for Shotgunners" and it turns out is the heir apparent to the dynasty. After I figured this out, I ordered it quickly, because I had lots of hulls gathered up that the 4th Edition simply was too old to identify.
Big disappointment #1- Where's the hull identification guide? You know, the one with cross-sectional drawings and detailed descriptions of each hull? This book, like every other, constantly warns you NOT to substitute components arbitrarily. Unlike metallic reloading, where a thicker shell case can lower a max load a bit, swapping out different hulls (of the same manufacturer, name and make) can make the difference between a good load and a blooper or a shattered shotgun. So why did they eliminate the single most important chapter in the previous four editions?
Well, so it's not worth the list price, so on to the loads. With 3 years since the demise of the (much belove) Win AA Compression-formed hull, the editors had PLENTY of time to test and roll out lots of good loads with the new 2-piece hull. Oh, no! Hundreds of (obsolete, useless) AA Comp loads, and None, Zero, zip loads for the new hull. A 2-piece Polyformed hull is listed, but this is the old hunting hull, and not compatible. Of course, there is nothing in the way of hull identification in the book to help you figure this out, you just have to "know."
On to a personal favorite, the 16 gauge. Maybe I can find some good hunting loads. Oh, no! More Win Compression hulls, those have been gone for what, 5 years now? And WAA16, ditto, obsolete and no longer available.
Well, there are some loads for W452AA, oops, no longer available, and hey! some Winchester X-Pert Plastic, wait, it gives you no clue, since a couple years before the book went to press, Winchester has been subsituting Italian, French, and Australian hulls for X-Pert, and they all have different capacities and none are compatible with the old X-Pert that the book is probably using.
I'm sure there's some useful loads in here somewhere, the trap shooters using all Remington components are probably well served. But then again, they can get by with the free loads offered by the powder companies. Which leaves me asking the question, why buy this book?
Very impressive amount of information!.......2006-02-26
I am new to shotshell reloading and needed a manual to get started. I consider myself lucky to find this newly-updated edition. The title says "Complete", and I agree; the amount of information was at first intimidating. The first chapters were very helpful to a beginner like me, going step-by-step through components and equipment before diving into the recipe tables. It can take a while to get used to the way the tables are arranged, but after a little time and patience you will find the proper loading information. I am very happy to see new components/data listed in the tables (i.e. Alliant's e3 powder, non-toxic shot) - although it means more recipes to test! This book has been an invaluable tool in getting me up to speed in reloading.
Full of obsolete info.......2006-02-01
This book has a large amount of data for powder, primers, and wads that are no longer produced. I cannot reccomend it.
A 'must' for both novices and advanced shooters.......2006-01-07
Rick Sapp's Reloading For Shotgunners, 5th Edition provides an updated fifth edition to include data for lead and non-toxic shot, and from .410 bore to 10-gauge magnums. What differentiates Reloading For Shotgunners from any other is its expanded coverage: virtually anything that can be fired in a shotgun is covered, with charts including notes on powder type, wads, maximum pressure and special load notes. With its numerous black and white photos and gauge-specific charts, Reloading For Shotgunners is a 'must' for both novices and advanced shooters.

Amazing!.......2007-07-14
This book is by far the better book to improve your pronunciation. After years trying all kinds of books, schools of English (for foreigners, of course), English teachers and a myriad of "teach yourself" methods, I finally found one that goes to the point. It teachs you in the easiest way, so clear and nice. It has draws of the mouth in order to show you the movement to make a perfect sound and it really works. The "usage tips" are really useful. Congratulations to the Author, Jean Yates.

Tessa Ramsey spent years searching desperately for ways to make her father pay attention to her. At first, it was his career as a surgeon that kept him away from home. Now that he's returned from the war in Vietnam, he's more shell-shocked and distant than ever; in fact, he might be suffering from a nervous breakdown. Just when Tessa's father needs her the most, an older boy in town begins to pay attention to her. It's been so long since she has been noticed by anyone that Caleb's regard feels delicious and invigorating. But Tessa is so desperate for attention that she is oblivious to warning signs that all is not right with Caleb. Alone and more in need of her father's guidance than ever, Tessa could be putting herself in danger with the boy. Searching for Atticus is a provocative story of people's search for love and connection. Jan Marino offers a painful, cautionary, but ultimately hopeful glimpse into how family dynamics help shape a teen's understanding of herself and her place in the world.
Customer Reviews:
Post-Traumatic Stress.......2007-06-05
Tessa absolutely loves the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird." Her friend's father owns a movie theater, and Tessa and her friend watch the movie there time after time. Tessa simply cannot get enough of it; she loves Atticus, the kind and wonderful single father of two children. She loves how he treats his kids and the fact that he sits all night beside one of them when he is hurt. Atticus is a father who is really involved in the lives of his children.
Tessa's own father is very unlike Atticus. He is a talented surgeon who is always busy at the hospital. Tessa doesn't feel like her father really knows her, and her mother says he loves her but just isn't good at sharing his feelings. Then he decides to leave for Vietnam, to put his surgical skills to use there where the soldiers fighting the Vietnam War need them. He is gone for a very long time.
When Tessa's father returns, he is even worse than he used to be. Now he wakes up screaming from nightmares. He often doesn't sleep; he sits up all night and smokes cigarettes. And he won't tell Tessa or her mother what is wrong. Above all else, he feels like he has to get away from the town where they live, where people know him and have such high expectations for him. So he and Tessa start driving, to be joined soon by Tessa's mother. Things go badly from the start, and Tessa and her father end up as guests of her father's sister.
While at her aunt's house, great things happen for Tessa. She makes a good friend, and there's a boy who she really likes who seems interested in her. Her aunt wants them to stay for a long time, and it looks like her father is in such bad condition, they might do that. But will life there really be any better?
I liked that Tessa's father didn't have a miraculous or sudden recovery, even though it was frustrating and sad to see him struggle like he did. I also liked Tessa's aunt and the relationship she had with Tessa.
I didn't like the fact that Tessa was so taken with Caleb that she overlooked so much about him. It should have been obvious to Tess what was going on with him. I also thought Tessa's mother should have been more supportive of her.
Searching for atticus.......2004-06-02
i thought the book was going to be good because the title of the book sound good and the cover really looked insteresting also, but like they always say never judge a book by it's cover. This time i judged it by how good it looks, instead of how bad it may look. Reading the book made me feel depress and alittle annoyed by the way her dad was throughout the whole book. Nothing good came out of the way her life was. This girl just moved to a new home town and had this hansome young rich boy wanting to be with her and she really didn't do anything about it. All she did was sit around and watch everything that was going on around her. I know if i had very young handsome boy after me and i liked him i would go for him.
This book was depressing. The girl did everything she could for her dad, and her dad didn't show any thankfulness towards her and she felt as if she was nothing to him. I have no connection to the characters what so ever. I felt sorry for the girl. I think the author may have had some connection to the characters b/c why would she write about this. I think the book was very boring, depressing, annoying by the way the dad and mom were acting, and i just wasn't feeling the book. I would not recommand this book to anyone, but maybe someone who can relate the book in certain ways. I guess.
Searching for Atticus.......2003-11-14
This I a great book. I would recomend to all girls 5th grade through adults. This book has alot of informatino on life. If you are even iterested in the Vietnam war this would be a good book for you. If you are interested in romance this is also a good book for you. this book gives you alot of information on life. I would recomend it to any one. I would read this over and over again. I would strongly advise this to any one.
Searching for Atticus.......2003-11-14
This was an awsome book. There wasn't any thing that I disliked about it. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through the book from biggining to end. If you are loking for a book to read this is a great one. This in not really a good book fo boys.Beacuse it talks about the girls point of view. I would strongly advise you to read it.

loved it.......2000-03-18
I really liked this book. i would have gave it 5 stars if it wasn't for the fact that i couldn't really relate to it. When I was reading about the peice of scum that was Caleb, before I knew he was scum, i was like 'wow, you move to a new place and you already have a handsome rich guy mooning over you, deep'. and then I got to the end and I was like ' what a shame you really can't judge a book by it's cover'. Call me strange but that was the lesson I got out of it. I don't know. mabey I'm just weird. loved the book though.

Book Description
Customer Centered Six Sigma provides readers with a fundamental, yet comprehensive, approach to thoroughly involving customer requirements into all aspects of your organization's business. This book offers a very basic understanding of the Six Sigma initiative, placing heavy emphasis on the consideration and implementation of customer input throughout the process. The authors present a high-level review of basic Six Sigma tools for gathering customer requirements, conducting customer satisfaction surveys, and managing organizational processes and opportunities based upon customer input. The entire book discusses the involvement and alignment of the customer with the organization's processes and culture. Each chapter's points are reinforced with case-studies which emphasize key lessons learned.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for Beginners.......2003-09-26
This book is very high level and would be a great introduction to the concepts of Six Sigma, as a ASQ Certfied Black Belt in search of something for a transactional business I needed more insight than this book provides. There is nothing more frustrating than to purchase a book out of my budget and find that it doesn't live up the hype of the description and the reviews by readers.
To summarize: Great book for those wanting to know what Six Sigma is and the tools associated to it. If you have experience in Six Sigma then it will disappoint.
What an awesome book!.......2002-08-07
The authors do a great job of illustrating the value of customer input and the measurement of results around the processes of serving your customers. Also explained is process variation and how six sigma methodology can not only drive out costs but actually result in a much better customer interaction and customer satisfaction.
Almost two books in one, the first half gives great understanding and quantification of the value of being customer centric. It also gives good techniques on how to best capture the voice of the customer.
The second half of the book explains how to prepare your organization for a six sigma effort and then leads you through (at a high level) the techniques to analyze your current processes, solve current problems and then takes them through implementation.
Just a great resource to help emphasize the financial benefits of listening to and serving your customers better. A compelling read backed up by real world examples. Understandable by anyone - no need for a statistics degree.
Customer Centered Six Sigma Is On Target.......2001-01-15
In a world of Six Sigma books that tend to be on either extreme, hard core statistics or top level managerial material, Customer Centered Six Sigma is right on target. This book is filled with real life data and examples that drive home the critical issues surrounding implementation of Six Sigma projects from a perspective that will be useful to a Black Belt.
The book illustrates how important it is to have a strong linkage between a Six Sigma project and your customers, and tells you how to get there.
Finally, if you are involved with Six Sigma projects that are transactional based, this book could be a great help to you with data and examples from serviced based industries.

Book Description
Depending on one's point of view, multinational enterprises are either the heroes or the villains of the globalized economy. Governments compete fiercely for foreign direct investment by such companies, but complain when firms go global and move their activities elsewhere. Multinationals are seen by some as threats to national identities and wealth and are accused of riding roughshod over national laws and of exploiting cheap labor. However, the debate on these companies and foreign direct investment is rarely grounded on sound economic arguments.
This book brings clarity to the debate. With the contribution of other leading experts, Giorgio Barba Navaretti and Anthony Venables assess the determinants of multinationals' actions, investigating why their activity has expanded so rapidly, and why some countries have seen more such activity than others. They analyze their effects on countries that are recipients of inward investments, and on those countries that see multinational firms moving jobs abroad. The arguments are made using modern advances in economic analysis, a case study, and by drawing on the extensive empirical literature that assesses the determinants and consequences of activity by multinationals. The treatment is rigorous, yet accessible to all readers with a background in economics, whether students or professionals. Drawing out policy implications, the authors conclude that multinational enterprises are generally a force for the promotion of prosperity in the world economy.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book on the economics of multinationals.......2007-05-03
This excellent book summarizes decades of research on the economics of multinational firms. A central puzzle economists pose is why multinational firms choose to establish an overseas presence rather than simply to export goods and services. The two main answers are to gain access to potentially large markets that would otherwise be closed--which the authors call horizontal foreign direct investment (HFDI)-- and to gain access to low-cost local inputs as part of a strategy of global competitiveness--termed vertical foreign direct investment (VFDI).
In the chapter on HFDI , the authors ask why multinational firms sometimes set up "greenfield" operations abroad rather than simply merging with or acquiring a local firm. Mergers and acquisitions "account for the dominant share of FDI flows, especially to high income countries." But greenfield investments are still important; most host countries prefer greenfield investments over mergers and acquisitions.
In the chapter on VFDI the central question is how a firm will divide its production processes across different locations with different factor prices in the presence of "trade costs" and "disintegration costs." VFDI flows between two countries will not occur unless factor endowments are sufficiently different. However, factor price equalization will occur over time, partly as a result of VFDI flows, and so VFDI may eventually be replaced by HFDI. Both, however, are dependent on trade and disintegration costs.
Why are the international operations of firms sometimes "organized internally, in wholly owned subsidiaries" and sometimes "externally, under arms-length contracts with independent local producers"? The main reason given for internalization is market failure connected with arms-length contracts. According to the authors, there are three types of market failures: the hold up problem, the dissipation of intangible assets, and principal-agent relationships between multinationals and local firms. The hold up problem occurs when a local firm has to make investments that are specific to the contracting relationship. The potential losses caused by an altered relationship result in underinvestment. The dissipation of intangible assets occurs when a foreign firm cannot avoid losing control over valued assets because of its contractual relationship with a local firm. The principal-agent problem occurs because of hidden actions or hidden information about local market conditions. The local firm may have an interest in concealing local market information from the foreign firm.
Another chapter summarizes large-n quantitative research on the determinants of FDI flows and other indicators of multinational activity. The main factors examined in this chapter are plant-level economies of scale, firm-level research intensity, home and host country market size, geographical distance (and other possible barrier-related factors), and transportation costs. The so-called "gravity model" explains much of the variance in country to country flows of FDI so most empirical research controls for gravity in measuring the impact of non-gravity factors. At the end of the chapter, the authors provide suggestions about how to improve existing quantitative research by allowing for a variety of motives for foreign investment (HFDI, VFDI, and combinations thereof), by including both firm-level and country-level variables in the analysis, and by separating mergers and acquisitions from greenfield investments empirically.
In summarizing many empirical studies on the impact of multinationals on host countries, the basic conclusion is that "MNEs are indeed very different from local firms." They are larger and more efficient, they pay higher wages and employ more skilled personnel. "This is so because MNEs bring to host countries a bundle of characteristics that are not necessarily available locally: technologies, brands, management procedures, market access, and so on."
A case study of foreign investment in Ireland, which has been successful in attracting increasing inward flows of FDI, mainly from the United States, shows that Irish tax incentives had a lot to do with the decision of multinationals to locate operations there. The authors conclude with a warning of the possible negative consequences of Ireland's having to harmonize its taxes with other member states of the European Union.
A further chapter on the impact of foreign investment on home countries concludes that this is generally positive because "foreign investments are more likely to strengthen than to deplete home activities." The authors are correct in noting, however, that home country effects are less well studied than host country effects.
In the concluding chapters, the authors call for "coordination and supranational regulations...to ensure that international markets work in an efficient and beneficial way." But they also argue that "multinationals are a fundamental and efficient component of a globalized world, not an enemy within." They advise developing countries to emulate Ireland which, in their view, "successfully managed to use its initial cost advantage to create long-lasting linkages with foreign investors."
This is an excellent book about the economics of multinationals and foreign direct investment, though it will not be a popular work among opponents of globalization. Unlike other works, it does not ignore negative effects of multinationals. It does not, however, discuss potentially negative cultural impacts of the branding and marketing strategies of global oligopolies. The authors put the onus on governments to see to it that the positive benefits of globalization can be felt beyond the narrow circle of industrialized and industrializing countries.
I would recommend this book for graduate students and for advanced undergraduates in economics or political economy programs. It is comprehensive in its coverage and clearly written, a worthy successor to earlier summaries of the field.

Theory of International Trade: A Dual, General Equilibrium Approach (Cambridge Economic Handbooks)
ASIN: 0262633078 |
Book Description
Despite the great importance of multinational firms in international economics, theoretical and empirical research on these firms has generally been conducted separately from that on international trade. In this book, James Markusen provides a comprehensive integration of the two fields. Drawing on twenty years of research, he focuses on the interaction of scale economies, trade costs, factor endowments, and imperfect competition. He analyzes decisions about whether to build or acquire a foreign plant separately from decisions about where to raise the financing.
Markusen begins with the simplest possible partial equilibrium models and works systematically toward a full-fledged general equilibrium model with both horizontal and vertical foreign direct investment. He offers empirical tests of hypotheses derived from the theoretical models. The notation is unified throughout, distinctions between models are explained with thoroughly explained derivations, and numerous graphs support the analysis.

Book Description
During the last 25 year, the neoclassical Heckscher-Ohlin trade theory has been extended to the ‘new’ trade theory by including imperfect competition and fixed costs into the analysis of trade relations. Furthermore, these micro-oriented trade models are increasingly used to analyze macro-oriented questions. Chapter 2 of this study investigates the dynamic welfare effects of exposure to trade in a new trade model, which is extended by firm heterogeneity. It is analyzed under which conditions exposure to trade with firm heterogeneity increases or decreases steady state welfare of a country. Chapter 3 uses a new trade model to explore which country-specific conditions give rise to horizontal or vertical multinational activity. Finally, chapter 4 combines the Heckscher-Ohlin model and a new trade model with horizontal multinational firms with the macro-oriented real business cycle model and analyzes the role of goods trade and horizontal multinational firms in international business cycle transmission.

Book Description
The emergence of a significant new partnership involving Canada, Japan, and the United States has been largely ignored by students of international relations and Canadian foreign policy. This collection, written by scholars and policymakers from the countries involved, explores the evolving alliance and illustrates its growing strength in a collective global leadership.
The papers examine the three market-oriented democracies in their changing roles toward each other and show how they have moved beyond their separate, special, bilateral relationships into a dynamic three-way engagement. Their intersections in trade, investment, business negotiations, peacekeeping, and environmental affairs are analyzed from a range of perspectives, including political science, management studies, economics, geography, and history. A powerful view unfolds: in the context of a rapidly globalizing economic system, this new triumvirate can only continue to strengthen and flourish, adding its influence to the creation of a new world order.

A Review by Stephen Heeney, UBC.......2000-02-24
Review as found in International Journal, Volume LIV No.4 Autumn, 1999. by Stephen Heeney
By bringing together participants in two networks of scholars specializing in various aspects of the relations between, and among, the United States, Japan and Canada, the editors of this volume have done a service to those seeking to understand the issues. They rightly claim that the book assembles the insights of scholarly specialists in Canada, the Untied States, and Japan across the disciplinary expanses of economics, business, law, diplomacy, political science, and geography.
The book has had a long genesis. It began with a conference in Tokyo in 1993(founded in the form of the Canada Japan Research Award), the publication in Japanese in 1995 of some of the articles (that volume won the Canadian Prime Minister's Award for Publishing in Japan), and now the current book which includes revised and updated versions of the original, together with new contributions. The volume is especially helpful in situating Japan within the conjuncture of three friendly countries in the north Pacific, and this it does very well.
While the reflection and consciousness-raising provided through this process are evident, the disadvantage is that some of the material and judgments could be dated, especially as the book went to press last year. It is gratifying to note that the contributors have largely avoided this pitfall. However, some contributors on more immediate issues suffer from data no more recent than 1995. More serious is the occasional jarring reference to a `declining' of the United States from which some conclusions as to relative weights of the United States, Japan and Europe are drawn. Decline of the political and economic variety may have been perceived in the United States early in the decade though it has scarcely been a factor since.
The presentation of a north Pacific triangle is perhaps overdrawn. The title does beg a glance at J.B. Brebner's classic North Atlantic Triangle (1946) which shows relationships on a scale that is simply not present among the United States, Japan, and Canada. Several articles in the volume are, rightly in my view, not about a triangle at all and treat strictly bilateral issues. There is plenty of room to make constructive contributions to the understanding of the extend and complexity of Japan/USA and USA/Canada relations.
To a sometime practitioner of Canada's bilateral relations with Japan, the interesting issue is why people Japan/Canada relations are not richer or more tightly managed than they are. Or, given that they are friendly and profitable, does it matter (as one author asks)? There is an inclination here to give less credit to Canadian leadership than it deserves. Occasionally there are references to the Eurocentrism of prime ministers from Quebec, or to the Liberal Party's enthusiasm for China, as perhaps detracting from a more important relationship with Japan. This ignores, however, the implications of efforts under Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, from the early 1970s, to engage the Japanese more seriously. It was under Brian Mulroney, a Progressive Conservative prime minister from Quebec, that Canada constructed in Tokyo an embassy complex second only to that in Washington, DC, and vastly cheaper because of the creative partneship with Japanese. Mulroney persuaded his Japanese counterpart to agree to the Canada Japan Forum 2000 (the subject of an article in this volume) and placed Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed at the head of a distinguished Canadian Panel. Going back in time, it was Liberal government that established diplomatic representations in Japan (1929) at the same time as it did in France. It is also a fact that prime ministers must spend more time on Canada's relationship with the United States than with any other single nation or issue, and have limited time to pursue other priorities very consistently, whether Europe, Japan, or China. And, let's face it, Eurocentrism and a fascination with China have been fairly widely shared by Canadians through out Canada.

Book Description
By a vote of 61 to 38, the Senate joined the House in declaring that "Congress approves...the North American Free Trade Agreement." The vote was virtually unnoticed, since the real battle over NAFTA was in the House. But there is a puzzle here. The President, the Framers assure us, "shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur." Whatever happened to the Treaty Clause?
Bruce Ackerman and David Golove tell the story of the Treaty Clause's being displaced in the twentieth century by a modern procedure in which the House of Representatives joins the Senate in the process of consideration, but simple majorities in both Houses suffice to commit the nation. This is called the Congressional-Executive Agreement, and is a response to a sea change in public opinion during and after World War II.
This agreement substituted for a failed constitutional amendment that would have required all treaties to be approved by majorities in both Houses rather than by two-thirds of the Senate. The modern Congressional-Executive Agreement was self-consciously developed in order to make formal constitutional amendment unnecessary. So, is NAFTA constitutional?
