        Product Description

Because of the environmental consequences of past agricultural and forestry practices that focused exclusively on the economic bottom line, the public now demands greater accountability and the application of more ecologically and socially friendly management approaches. Introductory chapters focus on the ecological foundations and the current status of agroforestry. Additional chapters cover technical aspects of major agroforestry practices: windbreaks, silvopastures, alley cropping, riparian forest buffers, and forest farming. The book concludes with several chapters that evaluate these systems, integrate related socioeconomic factors, and explore the future.

                Book Description

The Elder Pliny's Natural History is essentially a work of reference providing a wide-ranging account of human mores and achievement in the arts and sciences in the first century AD. It influenced the content and character of subsequent technical literature, but errors in transmission of the manuscripts led to undeserved criticism from the time of Niccolo Leoniceno, the late fifteenth-century Italian humanist. Pliny's work is here re-examined for the first time since the 1920s. Modern experiments, simulating the techniques described by Pliny, and an in-depth study of his development of a technical language, confirm his unique contribution to our knowledge of science in early imperial Rome. Pliny does not, in general, understand the principles underlying the phenomena he observes but makes a significant input - especially in the fields of crystallography, chemistry, and physics as well as of the applied sciences - from which beginnings those scientific disciplines would evolve many centuries later. Ironically, Pliny's scientific curiosity led to his death in AD 79 while observing the eruption of Vesuvius at close quarters.

                    Book Description

One of the earliest surviving examples of 'art history', Pliny the Elder's 'chapters on art' form part of his encyclopaedic Natural History, completed shortly before its author died during the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. This important new work argues that the Natural History offers a sophisticated account of the world as empire, in which art as much as geography can be used to expound a Roman imperial agenda. Reuniting the 'chapters on art' with the rest of the Natural History, Sorcha Carey considers how the medium of the 'encyclopaedia' affects Pliny's presentation of art, and reveals how art is used to explore themes important to the work as a whole. Throughout, the author demonstrates that Pliny's 'chapters on art' are a profoundly Roman creation, offering an important insight into responses to art and culture under the early Roman empire.

                    Book Description

Pliny's Natural History has too often been regarded as simply a quarry for quaint stories - a view which has tended to overshadow its overall structure and purpose. Dr Beagon redresses the balance and illuminates the Natural History as the work of an author with an identifiable mode of thinking and a coherent attitude towards his clearly-stated theme, Nature. Taking its cue from Pliny, the book examines his cosmology and in particular his portrayal of the relationship between Nature and the creation he considered her greatest, Man. Author and work are also placed in their wider literary and historical context. Pliny himself emerges no longer as a faceless compiler, but as a character with a valuable contribution to make to an understanding of intellectual attitudes in the first century AD. A more typical Roman than most of the intellectual authors studied today, he can offer a much more accurate picture of the Roman in his `natural' setting.

4 out of 5 stars This book is difficult reading but worht the effort........1998-03-21

Roman Nature does indeed make the life and times of Pliny the Elder come to life or at least make the age seem more real. Yet for me the value of this book is the contribution to thought which it makes concerning the relationship of man to nature and man to God. Pliny seems to view God as suffused through nature and part of it. God is Nature. This book may help to shed light on the remarkable revolution brought about by the Romans in the area of architecture. It may also help to shed light on the meaning of buildings such as the Pantheon. The Pantheon surely makes some kind of statement on the relationship of the Roman world and life to God. For this reason alone Roman Nature is well worth the trek.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Instuctional interesting biography.......2007-08-02

The biography part is pretty interesting. He mostly talks about his pro wrestling days and after. In his first book, he focuses more on his life before pro wrestling. I liked the idea of a bio/instructional because it adds some credebility to his technique.

The instructional part is good. He provides a lot of techiniques for several different situations. He goes through the techniques step by step in detail so the reader fully understands how to perform the techniques. His first book had some nutritional and exercise advice, however this book does not. Despite that, I would strongly recommend this book for Shamrock fans and people who are interested in training in MMA.

                    1 out of 5 stars Dissappointment.......2007-06-08

I have over 50 martial arts related books and this was a huge disappointment, i actually bought it and ended up returning it the following day. I liked his first book The Lion's Den, but just like Ken himself, this book hasnt evolved further.

So many better MMA/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Muay Thai books are available.
Please dont waste your time with this one.

4 out of 5 stars High-quality guide to Ken Shamrock and MMA .......2007-05-04

Beyond the Lion's Den is an expanded update of Lion's Den, which was published over ten years ago. It's divided into two sections covering Shamrock's life story and a second longer section which is a guide to MMA techniques.

The biography part makes Shamrock sound more like a superhero than a real human being but its's well written and entertaining. On the downside the only pictures are from two of his UFC matches (against Tito Ortiz and Kimo) which is a little strange considering the length of his career and the amount of images which must be available. Also the photo on the cover is from his pumped-up WWF days which is a bit misleading considering the content of the book.

The second half is a lot better. The problem with a lot of wrestling (or martial arts) books is that the photos are too small or grainy to see the techniques properly. Here there are lots of large, clear photos which show how to complete the manoeuvres really well.

In short this book may not be worth the cover price if you've already got the old version or are a good standard MMA fighter. It works better as an introduction to the sport and it helps too if you're a Ken Sharock fan :)

5 out of 5 stars Apology overdue, to everyone offended............2006-11-19

I am so sorry to all whom I've upset and offended with my online blogs/rantings. This is my promise to produce heretofore no more politically oriented, morally offensive pieces of diatribe that I completly let myself get carried away with. All too often I let opinions and guesswork and self-interest overcome my actually mundane, sober personality. Please forgive me. That's all I can ask.....that's all I can ask. Good day.

4 out of 5 stars A Bit Overblown But Interesting.......2006-08-07

Ken Shamrock gives a short autobiography to start out the book. The story of his life is interesting but he seems to overstate many aspects of his life and fighting carreer. His stories are at times not believable and he makes excuses for every fight he has ever lost. Using excuses such as being hung over, bum leg, took fight too soon, other guy on pain drugs etc., Ken comes off as a sore loser quite often. Regardless of his padding his own stories, it is interesting none the less.

The second part of the book is on fighting techniques. This section is well illustrated and worth the price on it's own. This is a good buy for fans of Shamrock and the UFC or anyone who wants to study the Lion's Den Fighting techniques.

The book is okay but there are other things to spend money on.

                      2 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag.......2007-01-27

A friend got this for me on my 30th birthday, and I thought it was the perfect gift...until I read it.

I was reminded of an infamous assignment one teacher gave my class in Junior High: We were asked to explain, in writing, how to tie our shoes--the goal being, of course, to make us aware just how difficult it can be to effectively articulate ANYTHING.

Needless to say, most of us failed...but I'm feeling a little better about myself now that I've read this book. Most of these 'experts' simply CANNOT explain/impart much of what they know in writing--making their entries frustrating, especially for people like me, who were actually hoping to pick up a tip or two from reading the book!

What's interesting to note, though, is that the 'problem' entries are usually not the oddly nebulous ones, like Stephen Covey's terrific MANAGE YOUR TIME. It's the 'simple' ones like MAKE A BED that, mysteriously, elude their authors.

                      A mixed bag.

                      5 out of 5 stars Useful I'd say.......2007-01-12

I had this on talking book and found it very interesting and downright useful so I bought it in book form for my daughter and her fiance. I am not out there in the world meeting and greeting but they are so I thought they would get a lot of mileage from it. They seem to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars It's not supposed to be serious!.......2006-01-21

Presumably, everyone already knows how to breathe and make a bed. Clearly, there's another point to this book other than to teach you how-to. Reading this little gem is something like watching an episode of Monk: you share in the madness of people who pay attention to aspects of the mundane and turn the quotidian into a form of art. Sure, some tips are funnier than others. You will laugh if you enjoy the absurd. You will be puzzled and disappointed if you take things literally. But really, don't you know how to wash your hair?!

5 out of 5 stars Very practical, worthwhile to read.......2001-10-14

This book is very worthwhile to read. It tells us
how important customer is. If a business only concerns
about its own product quality without placing a high
emphasis on their services to customers, that business
will not be able to success.

The book is especially useful for businessmen. It provides
7 imperatives for being a customer driven company. There
are also toolkits provided which help guiding businessmen
                        how to do in reality.

5 out of 5 stars A readable book on how to become a customer-driven company........1999-01-07

The last quote in this book says it best, so let's start with that. According to retailing legend Stanley Marcus of Neiman-Marcus: "There are only two things of importance. One is the customer, and the other is the product. If you take care of customers, they come back. If you take care of your product, it doesn't come back. It's just that simple. And it's just that difficult." Richard C. Whiteley, co-founder of The Forum Corporation, a leading consulting group that works with companies on customer-focussed quality issues, has written a readable, relatively basic (that doesn't necessarily translate to simple) book on how to become a customer-driven company. Based on five years of research conducted by his company, the book reviews such maxims as "Saturate your company with the voice of the customer," and "communicate your vision constantly." While there is nothing particularly new about what Whiteley reports, he carefully catalogs the process of determining what customers want and how to give it to them. In so doing, he leads the reader along the customer's path, and provides insightful points to ponder. What's interesting about this book is the duality of the material presented. Of the roughly 300 pages in this book, one-third is an extensive appendix filled with various customer surveys, and explanations of other research tools. Need to create a histogram? No problem, it's in this book, as are explanations on force field analyses, process mapping and tracking and more. While informative as a reference tool, this last third is starkly different from the main text, which covers the message in a basic, quick-read way. In any case, reading both parts will give you a full sense of the customer-driven movement and some how-to's to begin the journey.

4 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for any business manager........1998-02-02

Simple, interesting, focused. Whiteley hits at some of the 'sacred cows' of business and challenges managers/leaders to change all that is not in the customers' best interest. Could start a revolution in 'cost-centered', narrow-minded corporations.

                              Book Description

Growing world trade has helped lift living standards around the world, and yet free trade is always under attack by opponents. Critics complain that trade forces painful economic adjustments, such as plant closings and layoffs of workers, and charge that the World Trade Organization serves the interests of corporations, undercuts domestic environmental regulations, and erodes America's sovereignty. Why has global trade become so controversial? Does free trade deserve its bad reputation? In Free Trade under Fire, Douglas Irwin sweeps aside the misconceptions that litter the debate over trade and gives the reader a clear understanding of the issues involved. This second edition includes a new chapter on trade and developing countries and updates the entire text to deal with new issues such as outsourcing and steel tariffs.

4 out of 5 stars An Economists Defense of Free Trade.......2006-07-11

This book makes a reasonably decent defense of free trade. It speaks in predominantly layman's terms, and is entertaining enough to hold the layman's attention. Irwin does a good job refuting the most patently ridiculous claims that free trade victimizes those it employs and other silly claims.

It doesn't do the best job demonstrating that trade with developing countries benefits wealthy nations, however. It does try to do so, and offers some evidence, but I wish the book had made a stronger effort in this area as this is where most protectionists simply cite the trade deficit as manifest evidence that we are worse off in free trade, without understanding that our standard of living rises when we have cheap goods, and the market for our high skill jobs and products increases as developing countries grow wealthier.

The book does bring up a good point of accounting balance, noting that foreign investment in the U.S. offsets the trade deficit, but I fear that most protectionists are sufficiently xenophobic that this argument is likely to scare them rather than reassure them.

1 out of 5 stars Full of ahistorical assertions and disingenuous arguments.......2004-03-05

In this book the author argues for the "economic benefits of trade, not just for corporations but for people and the environment. He illustrates how protectionist policies damage the economy and fail to save jobs. Examining U.S. trade policy, he shows how "fair trade" measures are arbitrary, unfair, and often harmful"

Yet this author makes slight of America's long history of protectionist policies when it served its interest. In fact the history of America's industrial development was protecting her rising industries. So now that Americas industries are strong and known world wide; its labor force is a problem because it wants decent wages and health benefits. What is the solution? Free trade! Or free trade in cheap labor and dealing with counties that have no labor unions, no regulations that get in the way of business and officials that are easy to bribe.
This book is for those who have no critical facilities what so ever.

5 out of 5 stars The case for free trade.......2003-10-09

Irwin's book, together with Bhagwati's Free Trade today,
makes a strong case for free trade. The argument is clear and
the book is easy to read and full of evidence supporting
free trade. Among other topics, the author discusses
the harmful effects of protection on developing/
developed economies, trade and the environment
and the role of WTO. Irwin's book is non-technical
and more historical than Bhagwati's. The latter
is more theoretical, at least in some parts, but also
a great read. For arguments against free trade using

5 out of 5 stars Necessity to arguing.......2002-07-26

Doesnt it always seem that your friends subscribe to the wrong views, and you to the right one? Well, at least for me it is. Whether your pals are from the anarchist wing or the Pat Buchanan camp, or even deviate just a little from your (correct) free trade stance, you should read this book. And even if you believe in the unholy stance of skepticism of free trade , you should read it too, for "The Economist" said that if this book doesnt convince anti-free traders, nothing will; so go ahead and test your faithfulness.

I am not an economist, and I hate reading economics text books filled with useless jargon. Before reading some great books, economics was as complicated as chemistry, physics or calculas to me. But after reading a few books, "Lexus and the Olive Tree", "Mystery of Capital" and "Peddling Prosperty", I realized that it isn't that complicated, its just the economists who create this aura of an esoteric subject.

This book is written in simple language, but when it does use phrases that regular people don't understand, he does something rare - he explains their meaning.

This is an excellent book, but only after reading The Lexus and the Olive Tree. Tom Friedman's book is the main weapon in my debating arsenal, and "Free Trade Under Fire" book gives me a large cache of ammunition, as do Peddling Prospery (or anything else by Paul Krugman like Pop Internationalism, another MUST read), and Henrando de Soto's masterpiece "The Mystery of Capital"(dont even look at his "Other Path", it is simplified and better argued in this "Mystery").

5 out of 5 stars Reading This Book Will Make You Smarter.......2002-04-05

I have had the honor of having the author of this book as a professor in college. Not surprisingly he teaches classes dealing with international trade. All I can say is that he is an economist of the highest order and that he is capable of taking some extrodinarily difficult concepts and explaining them with a level of clarity that make them seem obvious. He takes this teaching approach to his book, making it both intelligent and approachable. If you ever actually wanted to know anything about international trade and even be able to discuss in a relevant manner the points at hand, read this book. You will be smarter for having done so.
