Book Description
What are the most fundamental differences among the political economies of the developed world? How do national institutional differences condition economic performance, public policy, and social well-being? Will they survive the pressures for convergence generated by globalization and technological change? These have long been central questions in comparative political economy. This book provides a new and coherent set of answers to them. Building on the new economics of organization, the authors develop an important new theory about which differences among national political economies are most significant for economic policy and performance. Drawing on a distinction between 'liberal' and 'coordinated' market economies, they argue that there is more than one path to economic success. Nations need not converge to a single Anglo-American model. They develop a new theory of 'comparative institutional advantage' that transforms our understanding of international trade, offers new explanations for the response of firms and nations to the challenges of globalization, and provides a new theory of national interest to explain the conduct of nations in international relations. The analysis brings the firm back into the centre of comparative political economy. It provides new perspectives on economic and social policy-making that illuminate the role of business in the development of the welfare state and the dilemmas facing those who make economic policy in the contemporary world. Emphasizing the 'institutional complementarities' that link labour relations, corporate finance, and national legal systems, the authors bring interdisciplinary perspectives to bear on issues of strategic management, economic performance, and institutional change. This pathbreaking work sets new agendas in the study of comparative political economy. As such, it will be of value to academics and graduate students in economics, business, and political science, as well as to many others with interests in international relations, social policy-making, and the law.

This is a beautifully illustrated but error-ridden history of the space age. Actually it delves back to Ptolemy and Galileo to cover our improving understanding of the Solar System and also incorporates science fictional mentions into its coverage. The history itself is rather brief and riddled with annoying errors: a dreadful explanation of the cosmic background radiation, a complete misunderstanding of the computer overload problem on Apollo 11 (it was with the lunar module computer, not the control center computers, and it was not an instrumentation problem), a description of the Apollo 13 disaster and ensuing rescue that bears only the vaguest resemblance to anything else I've read, and many other errors (for example, Ranger 3 was never intended to make a soft landing, and it was not its retro-rockets that caused it to miss the moon). By this time even when the book tells me something I don't already know I doubt that I can trust it.
If you buy this book, do it for the pictures, not the text. There are much better books on the same subject.
History of Space Travel in Pictures and Art.......2001-10-23
This relatively small book, imported from Great Britian, presents the history of space travel from the early works of Kepler, Copernicus and Tycho Brahe to the International Space Station and proposed Lunar and Martian bases in high quality pictures and artwork with some well written supporting text. Most of the classic photographs from space age have been included; however, there are many rarely seen photos, especially those from the Russian space program. Also included in the book are a few sections devoted to science friction movies and books, which I considered a nice touch.
For this reviewer, I found the section on the development of the V-2 rockets very interesting, which included a few paragraphs on how the Polish Resistance captured one and sent it to the British. This was a story that I had never heard before. There are also some very nice pictures from this era.
All in all this is good book.

Into Outer Space by david c owen is a truly original attempt at chronicling the history of space 'obsession'. First of all, the design of the book is fantastic, the chapters are clearly defined and the choice of images (from the NASA archives) are breathtaking. A very well thought out book

Great book but the same as Hiking Colorado III.......2005-07-22
It's really weird that the title of this book makes it sound like it's the first of a series of three "Hiking Colorado" books (numbers I, II, and III). But, in reality, it's the same book as "Hiking Colorado III." I don't get it but I can tell you to not bother buying it if you already own III.
"Hiking Colorado II" is a different book from I and II so it's worth getting if you already own I or III

A Nice Manners Update.......2006-11-10
I was expecting more of a manner rules book and this book reads more like a story citing many situations where one could use good manners. A bit different, but reasonably good reading.
Nice collection.......2006-04-08
This book is a really nice collection of essays varying on the subject of manners and etiquette. I can't say that I learned anything that I didn't already know from it, but there was an essay or two that reminded me of what I need to fine tune.
For beauty's sake alone, my favorite essay was One Hundred Thousand Welcomes by Frank McCourt. His description of Ireland and her people is terribly lovely and one I could read again and again. It makes me wish I were even a little bit Irish so I could claim the country and the people as mine. It was nice to revisit his writing again.
Have A Little Patience by M.J. Ryan was a good reminder to simmer down, take a deep breath and keep things in perspective when it comes to developing my level of patience. A really worthwhile read for everyone in this day and age.
When Bad Things Happen to Bad People by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez was a hoot and the most fun read of the book.
Keeping Your Word by Patricia Beard was the other essay that drove it home about following through even on the small things.
In The Company of Friends by Karen Duffy felt a little braggy and show-offy, but her message about vacationing with friends and the etiquette thereof could be translated to a more humble holiday; one doesn't have to rent a $20k per week manse to have a good time with friends.
Protecting Our Language by Anne H. Soukhanov was near and dear to my heart in this very laisse faire age of speech and grammar. "Whatever" Do You Mean? by Anne Taylor Fleming was just as relevant.
Modern Manners may not be read by those who need to read it the most, but it may succeed in reminding those of us who want to hear, about those genteel qualities that make life so much nicer when we put them into practice.

So, hollywood makes a hit movie right? So then they make a tv show, and now a book? This book took the movie and what it had to say and turned it upsidedown. They took all the valley girl talk from the movie and tripled it! Here is the first paragraph... Charity is so fresh. My best friend ,Dionne, and I are totally into doing good for humanity. Like making it more attractive. They also use phrases from the movie, you know the ones like, ensembly challenged, and the word brutil way to much. Now they are giving a makeover to Mrs. Guiests student assistent. It gives the title clueless a whole new meaning! Even the back is inept, it starts out with, Charity begins in your own mansion, right? Do yourself a favor and skip it! I hope this has been helpful.

If you are looking for bite size stories that can be absorbed in a minute or less, this is a great book. Most are light-hearted and entertaining, though none will make you laugh out loud and some are pretty weak. However, with nearly 200 real stories covered, everyone will find a few that resonate with their own experiences.
This is a book for anyone whose business or job depends on above-and-beyond customer service. As technical account manager for enterprise software company NetIQ, customer service was my number one job, and I took heart from stories about taking off-hours calls when at first all I wanted was to spend the time with my family (see the story of Jeff Amland taking a call Thanksgiving evening to plow a driveway the same day when no one else would answer).
This book will have at least a few nuggets for everyone, but do not expect reading this book to lead you to any great paradigm shift.

The book is execellently drafted, edited. the intellectual property is an indespensable asset for any firm and the said assets needs protection from infringement and recognition not only in the domestic market but also in the international market. The trade mark, copyright and patent is the most worthiest intellectual property and runs the show of the company in this competitive market. Patent is granted to the product aswell as the process/method of product. the value of medicine are going to shoot up if the product is patentable. If the product of the foreign goods are patented than monopoly is created and in our country (India) where only the process is patentable and product is never patentable, if the foreign goods which are patentable comes in our economy than such goods will be expensive as no other similiar/identical goods of our country can sell such goods. It may create unneccessary concentration of economic power. Trade mark is granted to the mark, logo, symbol while copyright is granted to the exclusive work and patent to the invention. Said law of all the country should be in one line then and then intellectual property can be protected in one another country. I have not purchased the said book but i have gone through the same i feel very interesting and its very pragmatic and visionary for the coming days. The same was not available in our city (Ahmedabad) in the state of Gujarat INDIA.
