In an effort to determine why people buy, Paco Underhill and his detailed-oriented band of retail researchers have camped out in stores over the course of 20 years, dedicating their lives to the "science of shopping." Armed with an array of video equipment, store maps, and customer-profile sheets, Underhill and his consulting firm, Envirosell, have observed over 900 aspects of interaction between shopper and store. They've discovered that men who take jeans into fitting rooms are more likely to buy than females (65 percent vs. 25 percent). They've learned how the "butt-brush factor" (bumped from behind, shoppers become irritated and move elsewhere) makes women avoid narrow aisles. They've quantified the importance of shopping baskets; contact between employees and shoppers; the "transition zone" (the area just inside the store's entrance); and "circulation patterns" (how shoppers move throughout a store). And they've explored the relationship between a customer's amenability and profitability, learning how good stores capitalize on a shopper's unspoken inclinations and desires.
Underhill, whose clients include McDonald's, Starbucks, Estée Lauder, and Blockbuster, stocks Why We Buy with a wealth of retail insights, showing how men are beginning to shop like women, and how women have changed the way supermarkets are laid out. He also looks to the future, projecting massive retail opportunities with an aging baby-boom population and predicting how online retailing will affect shopping malls. This lighthearted look at shopping is highly recommended to anyone who buys or sells. --Rob McDonald
Book Description
Is there a method to our madness when it comes to shopping? Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as "a Sherlock Holmes for retailers," author and research company CEO Paco Underhill answers with a definitive "yes" in this witty, eye-opening report on our ever-evolving consumer culture. Why We Buy is based on hard data gleaned from thousands of hours of field research -- in shopping malls, department stores, and supermarkets across America. With his team of sleuths tracking our every move, from sweater displays at the mall to the beverage cooler at the drugstore, Paco Underhill lays bare the struggle among merchants, marketers, and increasingly knowledgeable consumers for control.
In his quest to discover what makes the contemporary consumer tick, Underhill explains the shopping phenomena that often go unnoticed by retailers and shoppers alike, including:
- How a well-placed shopping basket can turn a small purchase into a significant sale
- What the "butt-brush factor" is and how it can make sales plummet
- How working women have altered the way supermarkets are designed
- How the "boomerang effect" makes product placement ever more challenging
- What kinds of signage and packaging turn browsers into buyers
For those in retailing and marketing, Why We Buy is a remarkably fresh guide, offering creative and insightful tips on how to adapt to the changing customer. For the general public, Why We Buy is a funny and sometimes disconcerting look at our favorite pastime.

Interesting.......2007-09-22
Interesting and insightful with some good tips for people setting up an interactive environment like a shop or a library. It seemed more like an ad for his services and/or his other books but it was a good introduction to the principles behind his business.
Good Retail Intro..........2007-09-16
A good read if you are a marketing or advertising professional who wants to get some insight into the retail psychology and its operations. However, there is no magic formula or scientific methodology given in this book.
Besides making a lot of publicity for his company, Paco Underhill gives a lot of very interesting & practical examples of the consumer's shopping psychology and how it all translates in the retail environment. Paco will tell you why shoppers intuitively steer to the right upon entering a store and how retail managers can use that information to increase their revenues. Overall, not an extraordinary book by any means, but full of interesting examples and stories that could come in handy for any business professional.
Excellent Example of Observational Market Research.......2007-07-21
Not only is this book interesting to the lay reader, it is a must read for retailers, marketers, and market researchers. There are gems within the pages!
Why We Buy is a must buy for retailers........2007-05-24
This book gives you concrete suggestions for increasing sales.
Interesting Findings.......2007-05-14
It was a really easy book to read and it gives you insides on strategies to set a retailing space, having a lot of things in mind, that might seem obvious when you read it, but they really aren't. It was a great; I highly recommend it for people on the retiling industry.

Frederick Taylor's Scientific Management Used for Consumers.......2007-03-13
This book's thesis is that by making the process of shopping easier and more desirable, and the choices clearer, the consumer will buy more. That's very similar to the observation that Taylor made about manual labor. Make it simpler and easier, and more work will get done. The methods are remarkably similar. Measuring the actions that the person under study makes, and changing the environment and process to see how the productivity is affected. I think this work is an important extension of behavioral economics, and hope it will be applied to more areas of business.
Although a book like this could be written in a very technical way, the voice and perspective are quite approachable. Also, the book is written to be equally interesting to shoppers and retailers. I'm sure you notice a lot of new things about your own behavior and that of others the next time you go shopping.
I also thought that the book was a good example of the way that stalled thinking holds back progress. For example, without this kind of observational measurement of shoppers, most retailers would never know which shoppers leave without buying and why. Or, why some merchandising experiments succeed or fail. In both cases, there are opportunities to accomplish more, if you can only grasp how your own decisions and behavior are helping and hurting your sales.
One of the sections I enjoyed was an evaluation of why many book stores miss sales. I often notice the inconveniences mentioned when I am in a book store, and wondered why the stores persist in doing things that make the store hard to shop in. There's a lot of stalled thinking in the industry, which is why we are fortunate to have Amazon.com to help us.
The book does a nice job of discussing how people with different perspectives shop differently. You'll probably get a laugh or two when you find yourself there. Do you secretly dig a sample out of the lipstick or the men's deodorant gel? Do you browse and rarely buy in Laura Ashley or in a computer store? When do you look at yourself in the mirror in a store? When do you not even go into a store because you can see long check out lines?
Ultimately, almost everything in this interesting book is common sense. But chances are that your needs are not often well served in areas that are important to you in retail outlets. My favorite was the problem of people only having two hands, and all of the times that we need three or four to negotiate the retailer's set-up.
A particular strength of this book was that it also pointed out that behavior is subject to change, as social patterns and values change. Men's jeans need to be in areas of wide aisles or fathers pushing their children in strollers will have to choose between looking at jeans and abandoning their children. That was not a very important problem 50 years ago.
I have often noticed how much people like to sample things before buying them, and how difficult it is to sample in many situations. Do you really want to go through what it takes to take a test drive of 20 different cars in 20 different dealers? Probably not. Yet, I would certainly buy a car more often if I had an easier chance to try the new ones out. You are probably the same way.
The main weakness of the book is that much less work has been done in looking at consumer behavior on the Internet, so the findings will hardly surprise you. You probably noticed these things years ago, like sites that are hard to navigate, have no site maps, and won't let you use the forms to buy.
I encourage anyone who has an interest in being more customer oriented to read this book, and use it to reexamine what your customers have to go through to do business with you. How could you improve?
Eliminate your stalls that make buying from you difficult, and rapid profitable growth should quickly follow.

Book Description
Black holes are becoming increasingly important in contemporary research in astrophysics, cosmology, theoretical physics, and mathematics. Indeed, they provoke some of the most fascinating questions in fundamental physics, which may lead to revolutions in scientific thought. Written by distinguished scientists, Classical and Quantum Black Holes provides a comprehensive panorama of black hole physics and mathematics from a modern point of view. The book begins with a general introduction, followed by five parts that cover several modern aspects of the subject, ranging from the observational and the experimental to the more theoretical and mathematical issues. The material is written at a level suitable for postgraduate students entering the field.

Book Description
All of the great moments, the great performances, the great players in the history of St. Louis Cardinals baseball history comes together in this special commemorative book from The Sporting News.
From the Gashouse Gang to Big Mac, from Sportsman's Park to Busch Stadium, from Harry Caray to Jack Buck, Cardinal Nation celebrates everything that makes the Cardinals a special franchise. Includes a special foreword Mr. Cardinal himself, Stan Musial.
Customer Reviews:
A must for Cardinal fans all over the world........2006-03-24
The third edition of Cardinal Nation was worth the wait because it includes the final season at Busch II, a sad moment for many but a beginning of an entire new era in St. Louis baseball. This book holds many amazing pictures and little bits and pieces of unknown Cardinals history, Cardinal greats like Stan "The Man" Musial and Ozzie "The Wizzard of Oz" Smith and Jack Buck are just a few mentioned in this book. A great read for Cardinal fans all around the world who haven't been to a ballgame in St. Louis like me, it just brings everything a lot closer because you almost can smell the hotdog's and hear the crowds roar.
Good Book, Two Much McGwire.......2003-05-02
Mark McGwire was the contemporary Cardinal everyone loves. But he is a small blip on the wonderful sports history that is the Cardinals. If McGwire is worth 11 pages, Musial, Gibson, Medwick, Dean and Hornsby are worth hundreds.
More needed to be said of Curt Flood and the ground-breaking efforts to free players from the reserve clause. As it is, Flood receives barely a mention. Dizzy Dean is a far more prominent figure in Cardinal history than the book suggests.
What I suspect has happened is that the book relies on the vivid warmth of color photography to capture the reader's imagination -- completely overlooking the artistic beauty of much of the black and white photography of earlier eras. While the book is interesting, it is far from the definitive history of the Cardinals.
It also is too bad that the publishers decided to focus on one unfortunate brawl between the Cardinals and Cubs or McGwire/Sosa as the penultimate moment in this rivalry. There's so much more here too!
A must have for Cards fans.......2003-02-03
A great book full of photographs stories from the history of the team. It contains pictures and short descriptions of the different stadiums the team has called home, the 10 greatest moments, the 10 greatest performances, of all the WS the team has played in so far and much more.

Baby Sign ASL Flash Cards (set 2: Around the House). We love these flash cards! Set Two includes these 25 cards focusing on food and items around the house: Bread, Cake, Cereal, Cheese, Bike; Cracker, Grapes, Meat, Orange, Spoon; Ice cream, Popcorn, Potat
Customer Reviews:
Sign Babies.......2007-09-24
I purchased these flash cards to help my family learn ASL as I have two hard of hearing children who are learning at school. The children like the pictures and often look through them on their own practicing the signs. My one complaint is that some of them have been simplified to be easier for small children with poor motor skills and the card does not show the correct sign.
Worth the Money.......2007-01-09
These cards are great for learning basic signs with your kids. Older kids learn fast from the cards, and toddlers enjoy them too, but be sure to laminate them because they bend and tear easily in toddlers' hands. The pictures can also be used for communication before the signs are memorized because a child can point to what they want by finding the picture card.
Nice & Easy.......2006-05-29
These cards are excellent. Cards are big and instructions in back SIMPLE! I have started using some of the signs with my 6 month old and she is already signing back! Love it!
Love these Cards.......2006-04-26
I think these cards are great - I love them - I love the description of the sign - I don't think think the picture description part is the best but the black and white part of of the description of the actually signing is perfect and understandable.
Sign Babies Cards/Subject Unclear in Picture.......2006-03-26
I really think these cards were a rip off. The drawing of the baby in the cards is enormous so its really difficult for the child to see what word he or she is supposed to recognize or sign. Big waste of money.

Customer Reviews:
Seems to lack a bit of practicality..........2005-02-24
Being that I specialize in IBM software as part of my IT job, I figured that reviewing On Demand Computing - Technologies and Strategies by Craig Fellenstein (IBM Press) was a good choice. After finishing my read, I'm somewhat torn on how to rate it...
Chapter List:
Part 1 - On Demand Business: Introduction to IBM On Demand Business; The On Demand Operating Environment
Part 2 - Autonomic and Grid Computing: Autonomic Computing Strategy Perspectives; Grid Computing; The Future of Grid Computing; Grid Computing Strategy Perspectives
Part 3 - Service Providers and Customer Profiles: The On Demand Business Service Provider Ecosystem; Industry Matters and Customer Profiles; Conclusions
Appendix A - IBM On Demand Developers Conference; Glossary; Reference Materials; Acknowledgments; Index
First, the positives... IBM has committed to building autonomic systems; systems that monitor, adapt, and heal themselves. Outside of this book, I don't think there are any other sources that cover the subject as much as this one does. The material on grid computing is very well done. Not only is there the technical foundation for how it works, but there's a fair amount of detail as to how it is implemented. People charged with investigating and building these types of systems would be able to gain a great deal of understanding. The material on case studies is rather interesting too. There are a number of short pieces on companies who have changed their business processes by building/buying IBM systems that are classified as "on demand".
Now the flip side... I had a real tough time wading through parts of this book. It could be that I tend to be more practical and hands-on. The material on autonomic computing seemed to be a lot of very high-level concepts repeated over and over. I kept thinking "didn't I just read that a couple of pages ago?" Either the details weren't there, or I was glazed over and missed them. I felt as if I was hearing concepts with no solid factual examples of how "on demand" is implemented. Even the case studies at the end could, in some cases, be seen as business process reengineering and not necessarily anything radically different than other businesses that have undergone major IT initiatives. It just so happens that they used IBM systems, hardware, and resources, and I felt as if some of the cases were labelled "on demand" on that basis alone.
I'll give this the benefit of the doubt and assume that some of the problems might have been me. If you want to know more about On Demand or grid computing, this is definitely the book to read. I'll just warn you that some parts seem to be more idea-based than reality-based...
onDemand made easy and made real.......2004-10-06
This book was a very easy read of a very complex topic. Well structured for anyone to understand. The author effectively describes the basic characteristics of an onDemand system and why we need it. This book changes onDemand from marketing hype and enables the reader to understand why this is a fundamental model of computing necessary for the future.
Ambitious views.......2004-09-10
IBM continues to build out its vision of the future direction of computing, as exemplified in this book by Fellenstein. It builds upon earlier discussions on grid and autonomic computing. Fellenstein shows how those ideas can be extended into a more complex realm, that IBM calls On Demand Computing. While the term is simple, he goes to some lengths to show that this is not something as mundane as the common idea of utility services. Unfortunately, that may be the typical reaction to the term, so he has to do this.
If you go thru this book and see the meat of the discussion, you'll realise that it includes complicated technologies that are barely built. Like the autonomic approach, which borrows metaphors from biological systems, like monitoring and prevention.
But even beyond these are what the author calls ecosystem dynamics. A system of disparate hardware and software interacting across a network, wired or wireless or, probably most commonly, using both modes. Somehow, this system has intelligence at its nodes, to ask for or supply computing resources.
Even IBM can't do it all. This approach also has the merit to IBM of shifting it from supplying hardware or operating systems, both of which may be moving to commodity status.
Having said this, the book could have well been trimmed in its earlier chapters. A fair amount of repetitive material.
On Demand Computing Described in Clear Understandable Terms.......2004-08-31
In the style of his previous books, this new book by Mr. Fellenstein, describes "On Demand Computing Technologies and Strategies" in clear and easy to understand terms. This unique book discusses many of the underpinnings of the respective technologies, as well as, provides a full treatment of the strategies-including many case studies.
Mr. Fellenstein describes in a very eloquent way, many of the ambiguous terms in the industry related to the topics surrounding "on demand." He does this in a global sense, while including perspectives from different geographies in the world.
This book is well organized, easy to follow and understand-a great blueprint for how global technologies, strategies, and standards have evolved-and will continue to evolve.
I highly recommend this book, and congratulate Mr. Fellenstein for a job well done on bringing to the global markets-this unique and very informative book.
Book Description
By All Accounts, the military planning for Operation Iraqi Freedom was magnificent. American air superiority and new smart bomb technologies supported a lightning-fast coalition ground force. In less than a month after the initial assaults, coalition forces swept through ghost-like Iraqi defensive positions to take Baghdad and topple the Saddam Hussein regime.
The plans for peace, however, seem to be nonexistent. An estimated $60 billion was spent to precipitate a regime change in Iraq. The assumptions, widely held in Washington, that the Iraqi people would greet the American forces as "liberators" have been proved wrong as looters and guerrilla elements have created ongoing security problems. The spending continues at a rate of $4 billion per month to stabilize the country during the post-war political power vacuum, while spokesmen for the Bush Administration talk of indefinite tours of duty for American troops in Iraq.
Meanwhile the Iraqi people, coalition forces, and the international community are looking for leadership in post-war Iraq. What is our nation building strategy? What is our timetable for democracy in Iraq? When can we withdraw American troops? How will the Iraqi people survive after the devastation of three wars in the past 25 years?
In Reconstructing Eden, Thomas E. White, Secretary of the Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom, along with three political and economic experts from CountryWatch, provide a detailed review of the events leading up to Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as a comprehensive plan for nation building in Iraq. The Authors answer the tough questions posed above and offer objectives associated with successful nation building in Iraq. They provide specific plans for political and economic development, as well as a forecast for the Iraqi economy, including the petroleum sector.
Customer Reviews:
Solid research from a person who knows...........2004-10-03
White's book examines the Iraqi conflict and makes suggestions for rebuilding the nation of Iraq. As most people familiar with the subject know, White was President George W. Bush's first Secretary of the Army, but was forced out by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as Rumsfeld took actions to clear out the Defense Department of certain key individuals who held dissenting views that he thought might impede his plan for restructuring the Defense Department. Army GEN Eric Shinseki was yet another individual who was forced out after suggesting in Congressional testimony that it would take several hundred thousand troops to occupy Iraq after the invasion. The White and Shinseki camp was proven right with regards to Iraq and this work explores some of the reasons why we are in the current situation in Iraq.
The book presents a balanced account of past events, offering the reader both the Administration perspective and a critic's perspective. However, much of the book is comprised of raw statistics, which demonstrates that a good deal of research has been conducted, but it is somewhat dry for the average reader.
Many of the suggestions for improving Iraq are now somewhat obvious, although at the time the book was published that was not necessarily the case.
I would recommend reading this book if you want a balanced account of U.S. policy in Iraq and are interested in exploring different strategies for the rebuilding of Iraq. The book does not flow in the same manner as a novel or even as well as the 9/11 Commission report, but it is worthwhile reading for those individuals with more than a passing interest in rebuilding Iraq.
A Great Policy Roadmap - timely, succinct, on point........2003-11-08
In this comprehensive, yet succinct book, Tom White, former Secretary of the Army and a retired General lays out a clear roadmap for rebuilding Iraq. It is timely, and there is no doubt that it's release has sent waves throughout the Department of Defense, and inner circles of Bush's policy makers.
While most people will be aware that White clashed with Defense Secretary Rumsfeld on several policy matters, there is no doubt he has an elightening perspective into the strengths and weaknesses of the DOD Iraq policy to date. Furthermore, his expertise in the field of energy and infrastructure only bolster the validity of his claims, that the Pentagon underestimated the investment and resources required to rebuild a post-war Iraq.
Hopefully, folks inside the beltway will invest a little time to read this quick study on what it will take to bring this state back to economic self-sufficency in a post Hussein world.
just a desperate counter punch from a shallow has-been.......2003-11-06
Thomas White was fired for being a scumbag Secretary of the Army. He's an Enron Exec responsible for everything you've heard about Enron, as well as manipulating CA's electricy market. He even used military assets in his personal business deals. Just read the papers. This book is a desperate attempt to counter punch his those that fired him. It's poorly done too: full of typo's, WAY too much white space, hundreds of pages of "appendices" (verbatim text of UN resolutions, macroeconomic charts and tables, etc.), poor binding on the book, cheap paper in the text. Here's a quick summary: to rebuild Iraq we need to take our time to develop a solid democracy with foundations of economic, social, and political development. DUH. Mixed in with these vague suggestions are questionable macroeconomic conclusions based on sketchy data. It's full of unreliable estimates for timetables and targets. Don't waste your time on this book. Also, he was paid to write it by his buddies from West Point. This is the same shadey group that got him employed at Enron and got him into the Bush Administration (before he was fired for being a buffoon). Obviously they're just trying to help him pay his legal bills with this book!!! Shame on you! White, have a blast in obscurity!

Book Description
Miller and Henthorne give U.S. investors and entrepreneurs the insights they need to capitalize upon the rapidly expanding, but still open, Cuban tourism industry--the island's major industry. This authoritative examination of the market for Cuban tourism provides comprehensive information on Cuban contacts and data sources that are accessible to foreigners; insights into the competition and possible competitive strategies, plus the general background on Cuba and its economy that investors must have for an understanding of Cuba's potential. With its lists of references and contacts, Miller and Henthorne's study will be invaluable to international tourism executives, particularly specialists in strategic planning and the development of strategic business alliances as well as international marketers and business development officers. Miller and Henthorne have written their book for the day when relations and travel ties are reestablished between Cuba and the United States--a day that in their opinion will soon come. From their personal visits and interviews with Cuban officials in banking, finance, investment, politics, and the tourist industry itself, Miller and Henthorne have compiled material that is unavailable from any other single source. Here is detailed, first hand, timely information on Cuba's tourism resources, opportunities, infrastructure, competitors and competition, peculiarities, and historical and regional background for the benefit of investors in the United States and worldwide.
