Book Description
A Global History of Indigenous Peoples examines the history of the indigenous/tribal peoples of the world. The work spans the period from the pivotal migrations which saw the peopling of the world, examines the processes by which tribal peoples established themselves as separate from surplus-based and more material societies, and considers the impact of the policies of domination and colonization which brought dramatic change to indigenous cultures. The book covers both tribal societies affected by the expansion of European empires and those indigenous cultures influenced by the economic and military expansion of non-European powers.

The Practical Decision Maker: A Handbook for Decision Making and Problem Solving in Organizations
ASIN: 078793948X |
Book Description
During the past decade, leaders have increasingly relied on self-managing work groups, multifunctional teams, and cross-national executive groups to create the organization of the future. Yet groups are not a panacea for organizational problems; conflicts between individuals or factions within a group often create seemingly contradictory situations?paradoxes?that can prevent the group from reaching its goals.
In this groundbreaking classic, Kenwyn Smith and David Berg offer a revolutionary approach to understanding groups and overcoming the problems that often paralyze group members, the group as a whole, and relations among groups. They explore the hidden dynamics that can prevent a group from functioning effectively. And they show how an apparently paradoxical suggestion?for example, inviting a success oriented group to risk failure, or affirming the benefits of going nowhere to a group focused on moving ahead?can break action barriers, overcome conflicts, and improve group performance.
Smith and Berg offer a different way of thinking about groups that will open new avenues of inquiry for professors and students of group behavior, and they propose many innovative ideas that will prove valuable to consultants, trainers, therapists, and others who work with groups on a regular basis.

A true companion on the road to no-where.......2006-08-31
Smith and Berg have wrouth - written is too modest - a briljant insighful and wise guide tour behind the coulises of our lifes. It is the best guide book I know to the place you live in: the group. You can use it in almost every situation. They show how we are caught in our webs, our own frames of mind, our relational swamp. Such is life and it is getting sucher and sucher all the time.
I recommend this book to every one dealing with groups AND individuals, because there is no better way to start to understand what life ' is'.
Constant Companion for Group Work.......2002-05-21
This insightful book has accompanied me through grad school, two corporate reorganizations and numerous consulting projects. The authors have written an excellent text on the contradictory forces/movements endemic to group life. Their use of paradoxical thought as a lens for thinking about and successfully navigating the territory of group life is both practical and innovative. If you're looking for the usual book about conflict resolution, please look elsewhere. Smith and Berg advocate reclaiming rather than repressing or eliminating the fears and anxieties that define many aspects of group life. Their explanation of concepts such as group paralysis, oscillation, group-as-whole, splitting and individual ambivalence are clear and highly cogent when integrated into a paradoxical framework.
Aptly titled: This analysis is rife w/ incisive insights........2001-08-11
Paradoxes of Group Life is a masterful explication of the concepts its title announces. This readable volume will serve the newcomer to Group Dynamics as well as the more experienced cognoscenti. People are often fundamentally ambivalent about ourselves and our participation in groups. Smith & Berg explain these (often unconscious) dynamics with great clarity and force. Treat yourself to this compelling analysis. I highly recommend their important work!

Book Description
In the past 35 years, the use of commercial enzymes has grown from an insignificant role in the food industry to an important aspect of food processing. This Third Edition of Enzymes in Food Processing explores recent and extensive changes in the use of enzymes as well as the discovery of new enzymes and their uses. Included in the book is a history of the role of enzymes in food processing, enzyme characterization, a discussion of different classes of enzymes including lipases and proteases, commercial enzyme production, and the processing of particular foods such as meat, vegetables, fruit, baked goods, milk products, and beer. Unlike earlier editions, it provides basic information on enzymes and their uses not adequately described in the current literature. Food technologists will find in this edition a description of the properties of those enzymes that are important in food processing, as well as a description of the properties of those enzymes that are important in food processing, as well as a description of the many applications of enzymes in the foods processing industry. The book is intended for food technologists, and will be of value to the microbiologist and enzyme chemist as well. This treatise provides a comprehensive treatment of enzymes used in food processing.
Key Features

Sand County Almanac (Outdoor Essays & Reflections)
ASIN: 0874177049 |
Book Description
A hundred miles northwest of Los Angeles, Sespe Creek flows through some of the wildest territory in California. A mostly roadless expanse of chaparral and mixed forest, in many places nearly inaccessible even on foot, the Sespe is the untamed heart of Southern California, a wilderness on the edge of one of the world's major metropolitan developments. To nature writer and outdoorsman John Bradley Monsma, the Sespe is both his place of escape and the place "that teaches me to be fully alive."
In The Sespe Wild, Monsma shares his exploration of this unique and fantastic region. His attention ranges from the physical Sespe, examined on foot or by kayak, to the subsurface geology that shaped it, the Chumash people who first occupied it, and the impact of Spanish and then American settlers. He also considers the Sespe through the eyes of some of its nonhuman populations--the nearly extinct condors, the vanished grizzlies, the mountain sheep, the steelhead trout, the red-legged frogs. Through the metaphor of the river, he ponders the tensions between preservation and overmanagement of wildlife and wilderness areas, the ecology of fire, the intricate connections between species, and the almost miraculous ways that the Sespe has escaped the fate of other Southern California streams, dammed or carved up into canals by development.
"To consider this place," Monsma says, "is to call up issues crucial wherever wilderness and cities meet: recreational impacts on wildlife habitat, the dynamics of accessibility and protection, the physical and psychological need for healthy ecosystems, threats of development and resource extraction." Monsma's engaging text addresses the Sespe's losses and its ongoing pattern of creation and renewal, leading us through rich layers of natural and cultural history in a narrative as colorful and exciting as a day on a Sespe trail. The Sespe, existing at the intersection of ecological processes and human ideals of wilderness, reminds us that nature and culture have always intermingled, and that the past and present, animal and human, "natural" and "unnatural" are ultimately and irrevocably inseparable.

The Basque Diaspora.......2005-08-25
Gloria Totoricagüena's Identity, Culture, and Politics in the Basque Diaspora is a great introduction to the understanding of Basque diaspora from a multi-disciplinary approach -a somehow overlooked area of Basque studies by the international academia and surprisingly by the homeland scholars-. It analyzes the formation of the diaspora as an historical phenomenon for the over five hundred years, reveals the multi-directional interconnectedness and networks (from a familiar to an institutional level) among diaspora Basque communities and between those and the homeland, and describes the changing nature of the meaning of being Basque from transnational and deterritorialized perspectives. The book focuses, from a historical perspective, on the physical, emotional and psychological interconnectedness among diaspora Basques and the Basque region, while emphasizing the current Basque Government-diaspora institutional relations, promoted increasingly since the return of democracy to Spain and the early 1980s-. It also pays special attention to the influence of the Basque homeland nationalist ideology on the reformulation of Basque identity on the diaspora communities, specifically in the period of the Basque-Government-in-exile between the 1940s and the late-1970s. In sum, Identity, Culture, and Politics in the Basque Diaspora is a comprehensive ground-breaking work which lays the foundation for more theoretical and empirical comparative research in Basque studies in the international terrain as well as in the Basque Country and which will attract not only an expert reader, but also a wide audience eager to learn aspects of Basque history, culture, and politics that until now have been to some extent ignored.
A Soulful read.......2004-09-09
"The Sespe Wild" is an anthology of reflections on life and life issues in the Sespe river. Each chapter focuses on an animal that lives or used to live around the Sespe. There are also chapters talking about attempted dams, oil drilling, and rock art left by the Chumash Indians. The book can be read in installments, or, if you have the time, in one sitting.
Monsma is a gifted storyteller, and traces the individual histories of each aspect in a way that makes you want to root for the cause of conservation. At the the same time, he presents both sides of each issue fairly, and never comes down clearly either way. This can be a challenge for the reader, particularly if you're looking for a more black and white discussion of environmental issues. Personally, I loved that aspect, as it left me asking questions of myself. Perhaps that is the biggest lesson in this book: You ask important questions, and as you go through life, part of the answer is revealed, but only enough to prompt more questions.
On a side note, readers with a Christian background may chuckle at some of verbal puns that hint at time spent in Sunday School, but for the rest, it's a soulful account of how a place so small and almost insignificant can be filled with life that continues to thrive in the midst of contant challenge. Monsma is obviously passionate about nature, and here he shares it with us.
A Compelling Description of the Sespe Wilderness.......2004-09-05
Drawing on his personal experiences of backpaking in the Sespe Wilderness over many years, Monsma revels in the beauty of the landscape, and its bird and animal life. His descriptions of early mornings in the wilderness are compelling; they make me want to reach for my backpack and hiking boots and head out to the backcountry.
Drawing on extensive scholarship, he tells the chequered history of the Sespe and the story of its preservation only 50 miles from the Los Angeles metropolis. Describing the threats from oil drilling, dam building and suburban development, he not only points out the short-sightedness of current energy and development policies, but also shows the remarkable ability of the wilderness to regenerate itself and obliterate the traces of earlier intruders.
He uses rhetorical figures such as the native american shamans, tricksters and bear-men to introduce different ways of seeing nature and connecting it to everyday urban life. The traces of zen buddhism and Carlos Castaneda appear hokey at the beginning, but become an integral part of the book's structure.
By the end this is the kind of book that makes you not only want to visit the wilderness, but also makes you see under the surface of urban life. Every freeway drainage ditch, patch of scrub, and visiting hummingbird comes alive with layers of meaning.

Weather Predicting Simplified is the first book that shows the reader, with many sample satellite photos and weather maps, how to predict the weather easily and accurately - without having to wait for hours for NOAA updates.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book, NOT a Substitute for the Five Day Course.......2007-06-15
This is one of four weather books I recommend, the other three are hot-linked below. It is a truly great book with both white space and color images, easy to read font, and a sensible easy to understand roadmap for integrating satellite imagery, upper air (500 milibar) and surface forecasts and sea state charts.
After I finished the five day course in Advanced Meterology, I created a short guide for myself that I could share with others, and this book was very helpful as a reference to complement the binder that I received with the course.

Ambiguous explainations.......2006-05-06
I learn pretty well from books and have taught myself some rather complex things that way. As a sailor and technical person, with some understanding of weather prediction and understanding weather charts going in, I still found the information difficult to assimilate. The author frequently uses terms without defining them, and his descriptions are often ambiguous, making understanding the material frustrating. I am reading it for the second time, and still find this to be the case. For example, he will make reference to something "below the [upper level] trough", and you need to somehow figure out whether he means closer to the equator, since the plane of the waves is north-south; or closer to the earth. The material is very useful, but he needed a better editor or proof-reader
Disappointed.......2003-11-03
As a scientist, physician, and sailor, I consider myself fairly good at assimilating technical material, but I had trouble with this book. The author (like the NOAA meterologists who write those impenetrable forecast discussions) does not seem content to stick with one set of terms. A better editor would have helped him do so. One of the main thrusts of the text is the relationship between upper atmosphere phenomena (troughs and ridges) and surface conditions. After reading the book, I still don't have a satisfying grasp of how this relationship works, mainly, I think, because the phenomena are defined in descriptive rather than mechanistic terms. I am going to read it again, but will be looking for something better.
To the point, well written.......2002-06-30
Yep, I think if I had to take one book on weather for a sailor, then this would be it. I really like the sequence with which he presents his topics, which makes it easy to follow. Loads of examples, weather fax charts, etc., which makes it easy to compare to current stuff and see what's going on out there. I love it.
Simple, yet comprehensive and practical.......2001-05-22
This is the best weather prediction guide I've seen. Michael Carr makes it easy to understand and interpret weather prediction models and provides plenty of examples so you can make sense of those satellite images available online! Not only that, he applies his extensive blue water sailing experience in helping to identify appropriate tactics for heavy weather avoidance. I wouldn't go to sea without it.

Customer Reviews:
Traditional Christian Book.......2007-08-27
This book is perfect for couples planning the "Cookie Cutter Same As Traditional Wedding." It is a Christian Wedding book, there are no good alternative vows, readings, blessing, or optional elements. It is a dry and boring read. It would be easier to go online and pull up "The Book Of Common Prayer Wedding and print it. The intent of the book is misleading with the title. The Title of The Book Should Read: Your Standard Basic No Frills Christian Wedding. That way readers know what they are purchasing and will be satisfied instead of disappointed.
Religion :(.......2007-05-19
When i purchased this book I was looking for something that would help me write a comepletly secular ceremony for my wedding. This book is not secular by any means!!! It outlines certain ways to have a ceremony based on a series of different relgions. I have certain words that will be omitted from my ceremony (god, christ, worship, covenent, etc) and this book didnt help. every passage the offer has one of these words in it. It does have about a page on civil services, so i guess its not all bad. But if you are like me dont bother buying this book, its not helpful.
not all that great.......2005-08-06
too much junk
didnt like the book it was more religious and not common person stuff didnt like it.
For the couple who can plan a wedding without a planner.......2005-07-23
I'm getting married in about ten weeks, and I just bought this book yesterday. I went to a bookstore (sorry, Amazon) and looked through dozens of 'wedding vow books', and found them all schmaltzy and trite. "Words for Your Wedding" is what most of the others are not -- simple, inexpensive, and completely lacking in advertisements being passed off as advice. The authors identify the most common parts of the service, and then give you alternative wordings from various Christian denominations (there is a short section on Jewish weddings in the back). This book clearly isn't for everyone, but I would absolutely recommend it for couples who are focusing on their marriage rather than their wedding.
Words for your Wedding.......2004-08-08
We have used this book for some years now to assist the couples we marry in sorting their vows. Of the several books we have for this purpose, as Officiants of Christian marriages, this book has been the most helpful - for us & the couples as they choose their special words. Rather than choosing all the words a particular denomination uses, the couples have taken words from the different ones to say what best expresses them. We recommend it.

Book Description
Of the legions of wayfarers who shared in the tall ship Sofia's diverse and colorful history, only seventeen were on board when she went down. Of those who survived to tell the tale, none has . . . until now.
More than twenty-five years ago, Pamela Bitterman began her journey on board a 123-foot, sixty-year-old sailing ship being readied for its second global circumnavigation.
Bitterman's initial voyage, during which Hurricane Kendra chased the schooner miles off course to Bermuda, did not impel her to retreat home. Instead, she immersed herself in this created space between the life of a tall ship sailor, world traveler, and adventurer. Her narrative describes rare gatherings with Cuna Indians in the Gulf of San Blas, the discovery of original ancient tikis hidden away in the Marquesas, and a treasured offering of traditional tapa cloth from island natives. Bitterman's experiences also give readers insight into a time of civil unrest in Latin America, including a frightening road trip through Mexico and Central America, and the chaos during the final stages of the treaty that returned control of the Canal Zone back to Panama. The drama ensues with the arrest of the entire Sofia crew in two different countries, a bout with dengue fever, and a near-mutiny in New Zealand before the final voyage.
The details of events from this journey endure as vividly today as when Bitterman was a naive "shellback" swabbie, later ship's bos'un, and finally acting first mate. In the end, she was merely one on a life raft of grateful survivors.
Sailing to the Far Horizon draws on original journal entries, photographs, and excerpts from official Coast Guard documents that chronicle the fascinating enigma that was the Sofia and its dramatic end.
Customer Reviews:
Sailor from Hell.......2007-01-07
I live on a lake in Hell Michigan, hence the title for my review. I have a tiny O'Day sloop that I sail when the jet skiers and wake boarders are not about and I'm a child of Woodstock who remembers living life without hand rails. I related to this wonderful story on many levels; the great sailing adventures; the loose and whimsical way that the crew made decisions and the great freedom that the crew experienced as they crammed all of their worldly possessions into a sea bag and ventured out. This is one of those books that I wanted to gobble up in a single setting but I made myself parcel it out in small savory bites so that it lasted for an entire week. Reading a new chapter was my reward for completing parts of a syllabus that I was working on. Thank you Pamela Bitterman for this beautiful book, it has joined the collection of sailing stories on my book shelf.

Fascinating, fun book.......2006-09-20
My wife got the book for me from the library, not knowing if it was appropriate for me or not. It was. I devoured the book in a few days. I'm a sailor and have an interest in historically rigged vessels. This book transported me to a time and place far more interesting than my current surroundings. The writing is at times laborious, but never burdensome due to the topic. Overall it left me with profound gratitude that the author took the time to write the story, wrote it as well as she did, and withheld as little as she did. I recomend this book highly as a model for adventure, a lesson in management, and a succesful experiment despite the sinking. I wish I had been a Sophian! Since another ship sails under a similar model (and the same captain), perhaps I can be.
Sailing to the Far Horizon.......2005-08-02
This is a truly amazing adventure written by a courageous author who dared to take a risk and sail across the world. Composed mostly of journal entries, the book is written in an honest style that paints the picture of the long voyage out at sea and the hardships its crew endured during its sinking. Overall, I appreciated the honest style in which the book was written and the truthful accounts from the journal entries. The book not only told the story in writing, but conveyed it through its sincerity. I was captivated from the beginning to end, but especially during the end... during the sinking, the aftermath, and dealing with the loss. The accounts of the Sofia and what her crew faced were both fascinating and heartfelt, and they portrayed a vivid picture of what life was like on that tall ship. Whether you're young or old, the theme of the book is applicable to all. I will forever keep the the story of the Sofia and it's crew with me and will heed the advice of the author who once said to "have an adventure wherever you can."
Sailing to the Far Horizon: The Restless Journey.......2005-06-23
Ms. Sisman's book is a thrilling account recalling the rich tradition of 19th century nautical fiction and travelogues of Melville and Dana, or the rich evocative canvasses of Turner. Like so many restless wanderers in search of themselves, Pamela's memoirs recount an epic journey to exotic ports of call and encounters with people who, without the trappings of our 21st century mall-saturated American culture, manage to maintain serenity, sanity and dignity. At the same time, the book recalls the 70's and the youthful quests all but lost to the "Baby Boom" generation.
I recommend this book to anyone who's fascinated with the sea, with travel articles and memoirs, and to anyone who has ever suffered a traumatic experience and lived to move on. I'd welcome a sequel about the reunion of the crew, should this be possible.
Gripping, descriptive, yet embued with both nostalgia and horror, "Sailing" riveted me from start to tragic finish.

review by a crewmember.......2005-04-09
As introduction, I am the Norman in the book who is not otherwise identified. I submit that there are four sub-stories in the book, the travel account of people and places, the "mutiny" in Nelson to remove the captain, the sinking, and the liferaft trip until rescue. I am grateful to Pam for the first story, and have told her so, since I did not keep my own journal. I respect her right to tell it like she saw it, but found some of the accounts over-dramatized from what I remembered. Deep water sailors will notice some mistakes and omissions in nomenclature and descriptions of maneuvers, some of which are obvious only to former crew. As an example, SOFIA never had an electric bilge pump. Pam's strength is in descriptions of people and cultures, but not in navigation, ship handling, or equipment, which will probably be fine for the average reader.
I have no problem with the liferaft account either; it is a gripping account of a desperate situation and miraculous rescue.
I begin to differ with the story of the sinking, not so much for what is said but what is left out. If someone were trying to come up with some reason for the sinking and assess some responsibility, the information given is insufficient. There are many other technical details dealing with SOFIA's stability and pumping equipment, and her sailing characteristics in heavy weather, which are missing. The account of the evolution of the disaster is nevertheless gripping and worth reading.
Where I totally disagree is with the account of the "mutiny". It was not a mutiny because it was not for the purpose of the objectors to take over the ship, but to restore the democratic control of the crew/operators and prevent the captain from taking over. Pam describes the captain's takeover on page 284, after four of the objectors had given up and left. We were just exercising the right since the founding of the cooperative to remove the captain. What is completely missing is that we had serious concerns that the captain was incompetent in emergency situations and dangerous due to his narcissistic and antisocial behavior, that everyone's lives were in danger. Yet Pam makes no connection between the sinking two months later and the possibility that it was due to the very objections raised in Nelson. And the fatal voyage would not have taken place without the ship's papers which had been stolen by the captain. The account given is very one-sided, and nothing useful regarding cooperatives or mechanisms for choosing captains can be gleaned from the information presented.
