This well-written book can be a smack in the face if you are not ready to face some of your own failures. It smacked me good!
The author has a concise way of writing that makes this fit his audience very well. Most readers are probably "drivers" that want to get to the point. The author does that - his bottom line is - "Shut up and take responsibility for your own actions." He didn't say that, I am paraphrasing.
What I found fascinating was the thinking process this book will send you on. You may think you are contributing mightily to your organization - and you MIGHT be. But it is also your responsibility to raise the caliber of work among everyone around you. Raise your expectations of yourself and everyone else and watch what happens.
The author does a good job of getting you to look inward and then outward. Just a very well done book.
This Book Was a Real Eye Opener.......2003-06-27
This book is worth its weight in gold. I have read many books in the area of self-improvement, and I must say this one is of the top. The author gets very personal and talks openly about his own personal accountability. Even though it was lengthy read, I did not find this book repetitive. The book is written in a style that it sounds like John is talking to you one on one. It's contains very powerful ideas, while at the same time it is extremely practical. I fully endorse this book.

Enjoyed it! Our management team has studied this book a chapter at a time for months now. It provokes great discussion and has helped us learn as individuals what responsibility is REALLY all about. There are many stories that encourage personal application. We have now switched to Miller's new book titled "QBQ! The Question Behind the Question." We're using this one for staff throughout the firm. Same powerful core content on personal accountability but a quicker read at only 115 pages. It's his "Who Moved My Cheese Version?" and is right on target with its message, speed, and impact.

He then provides learning steps to consider the real issues and questions in accountability. I found the book somewhat ponderous at times but also convicting. This book is loaded with terrific stories that convey the content of Personal Accountability. Not one story is wasted. It's conversational style is a plus. The author's humor and delightful outlook on life come through, while the material is easy to read and life changing. It also applies to all people, both at work and at home. And this book/CD package is a terrific companion to track and follow the history of the tournament.
It's funny how college basketball has become even more popular than pro in some markets. Its a shame there aren't more books and media on the tourament. We expect that to change soon. Until then, these combo package is just the ticket to track the stats, rankings and history of some of the most colorful matchups and Cinderella stories.

Getting long in the tooth (the book and me both) but it's a way to approach writing a novel. It's a workbook with lists. Don't rush into it but don't ignore it.
If you want to write fiction, you need this book........2006-07-17
Evan Marshall explains everything you need to know to get started with your novel. It may be too elementary for experienced writers, but it's exactly what the beginner needs. He not only tells you what to do but shows you how to do it. For instance, all the how-to books say to use a header; this workbook shows you what the header should look like. Marshall's charts for characters and plot make sense of the rhetoric, and his blueprint will move the novel along to completion. This is the clearest, most helpful book on writing that I've found.

I'm about 3/4ths done with this book, and I can't begin to convey what a help it's been. If you're setting out to write a marketable book and need help with structure, as I do, this workbook will really help put the skeleton together for you. It doesn't write your novel for you, but it shows you how to best organize your ideas and plot the necessary elements, giving a lot of attention to pacing and appropriate length. I feel like I have a better handle on my own mind and creation already.
Disappointing, Convoluted, Confusing...........2003-02-18
As a books-on-writing junkie, I have to say that I had high hopes for the Marshall Plan. Although there are general plot structures, the so-called scene-by-scene blueprint presented in the Marshall Plan is convoluted and confusing. If you're serious about getting published I would recommend "Novelists Essential Guide to Crafting Scenes (Novelists Essentials) and "Fiction First Aid: Instant Remedies for Novels, Stories, and Scripts" by Raymond Obstfeld. Mr. Obstfeld's approach is much more realistic and comprehensive. Using Mr. Obstfeld's suggestions, I'm well on my way to completing and submitting my manuscript.

Poorly Organized and Researched.......2007-07-22
I had high hopes for this as a branch off of the Writer's Market, since most of what I submit to are magazines (big and small). While there is an outpouring of information, are listings for publishers that only print one author and accept 0% of manuscripts submitted helpful (and there are quite a few of these)? Some of these listings haven't been updated for the past 7 years or so ("Not accepting unsolicited manuscripts until 2000"), and one wonders what information the editor was getting (one small press, according to the book, published travel guidebooks and travelogues, however on their website they are a transgender studies publisher).
For the cost, I'd say stick with the Writer's Market. It may have fewer listings, but they are better presented, are well researched, and lead to more positive (and profitable) outcomes.

The Liberal Democratic Party, which dominated postwar Japan, lost power in the early 1990s. During that same period, Japan's once stellar economy suffered stagnation and collapse. Now a well-known commentator on contemporary Japan traces the political dynamics of the country to determine the reasons for these changes and the extent to which its political and economic systems have been permanently altered.
T. J. Pempel contrasts the political economy of Japan during two decades: the 1960s, when the nation experienced conservative political dominance and high growth, and the early 1990s, when the "bubble economy" collapsed and electoral politics changed. The different dynamics of the two periods indicate a regime shift in which the present political economy deviates profoundly from earlier forms. This shift has involved a transformation in socioeconomic alliances, political and economic institutions, and public policy profile, rendering Japanese politics far less predictable than in the past. Pempel weighs the Japanese case against comparative data from the United States, Great Britain, Sweden, and Italy to show how unusual Japan's political economy had been in the 1960s.
Regime Shift suggests that Japan's present troubles are deeply rooted in the economy's earlier success. It is a much-anticipated work that offers an original framework for understanding the critical changes that have affected political and economic institutions in Japan.

A freamework to understand Japan in comprehensive way........2001-12-28
since the 1982, the developmental state, articulated by Chalmers Johson in his infulential book 'MITI', has been the standard approach in the field of North East Asian studies at least in the circle of political economy. but the model of developmental state does not fit into the phenomenon since the 1980s, in SOuth Korea, and the 1973, in Japan. the bureacrats is not that autonoumous like the past, i.e. the rapid growth period, the ruling party proned to be the masters of fork barrel politics, and constituents were not that concensual like the past. there must be some 'shift'. Pempel's work is the attempt to provide a comprehensive framework to explain the shift in systematic and succinct way. his framework is based on the concept of 'regime' which is common in the field of comparative politics. I think he succeeded in that point.
but the concept of regime has some limitation: for example, it can't expalin why keiretsu or main bank system developed and why it has been disolved since 1980s. sure I know it was not Pempel's intention to include them. but to understand Japan or Korea, we should include big businesses. without them, explanation can't be comprehensive. it's the point of political economy, I think.
Achieve true understanding of Japan's political economy.......1999-08-24
Although experts on Japan may have some specific academic criticisms, these should not detract from the overall quality of Pempel's book. The book synthesises an extremely wide body of literature (both English and Japanese language) on Japan's modern political economy, especially less well-known or unorthodox ideas overlooked by many Western texts. As such, it deserves to become a standard in bringing students (in the widest sense of the term) up to a graduate, if not higher, level understanding. It would definitely also make enlightening reading to those Western policy makers and commentators on Japan who have yet to grasp the subtleties of Japan's rise and the even more complicated factors behind its current decline.
Must reading for anyone interested in Japan today........1999-04-05
Pempel convincingly argues in REGIME SHIFT that the major domestic and international changes taking place in Japan during the last decade or more have cumulatively resulted in a fundamental transformation in Japan's political economy. He then traces the consequences for Japan's present and future of this alteration. A major attempt to synthesize what others have seen as disparate, unconnected events and trends at both domestic and international levels into a coherent view of where Japan is and is going. Must reading for anyone interested in Japanese politics and economics, and its place in the world.

Exchange rates have been central to the course of economic development in Latin America from the heyday of import substitution to the rapid expansion of foreign debt in the 1970s, and from the debt crisis and its troubled aftermath to renewed growth and borrowing in the 1990s.
Why do governments choose the currency policies they do, and how do economic and political factors affect these policies? Although currency policy is made by governments operating in a political environment, there has been little study of the political economy of exchange rate policy. The Currency Game looks to fill this void by examining the range of potential determinants of currency choices by Latin American governments. While purely economic factors--especially economic structure, trade patterns, and exogenous economic conditions--are of course important to these choices, the book focuses on the political and political economy considerations that have typically been underrepresented in the literature. These include the effects of interest groups, electoral competition, and the timing of elections on exchange rate decisions.
Since exchange regimes are adopted for reasons as diverse as inflation control, reduced volatility and improved competitiveness, the book also features a cross-country analysis of national exchange rate policies, as well as case studies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru.

Exchange rate policy is one of Latin America's most importante, and most complex, issues. From currency crises to dollarization, the topic has been economically crucial and politically controversial. This book provides an excellent analysis of the exchange rate problems and experiences of Latin American governments. With both general overviews and country case studies, the volumen bring a wealth of theoretical and empirical knowledge to bear on an increasingly important policy area.
