Book Description
Samir Amin is one of the world's most profound thinkers about the changing nature of capitalism, North-South relations and issues of development. In this book, he provides us with a powerful understanding of the new and very different era which capitalism has now entered with the collapse of the Soviet model, the triumph of the market and accelerating globalization.
His sophisticated analysis brings within its ambit the increasingly differentiated regions of the South, the former Eastern bloc countries, as well as Western Europe. He also integrates his economic arguments about the nature of the crisis with political arguments based on his vision of human history not as simply determined by material realities, but as the product of social responses to those realities. His innovative analysis of the rise of ethnicity and fundamentalism as consequences of the failure of ruling classes in the South to alter the unequal terms of globalization is particularly compelling. And his deconstruction of the Bretton Woods institutions as the managerial mechanisms protecting the profitability of capital has profound implications for the likelihood of their being reformed in any meaningful way. Looking ahead, Amin rejects the apparent inevitability of globalization in its present polarising form, and instead asserts the need for each society to negotiate the terms of its inter-dependence with the rest of the global economy.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant analysis of the Global World Order!.......2001-04-13
Samir Amin's analysis of the political economy of the world system is as precise as a set of mathematical theorems and, indeed, if any work in the field of IPE can lay claim to being a work of science, this is it. This is not an easy book to be casually read in the hope of securing instant gratification or wisdom; it is a serious work which the reader will have to read through quite a few times, and think through even more. At the end, though, the reader will be rewarded with a profound understanding of the reasons behind the societal collapse in large parts of the third, fourth and Soviet worlds; of why Europe remains, and could continue to remain, politically a pygmy; of why the "free market" will keep the majority of the world's peoples and nations "free to stagnate"; and why the folks living in "God's own country" can bid goodbye to the good old days of carefree plenty.
incomprehensible.......2001-01-08
a feast of inspirational ideas and theories hidden in an incomprehensible text.
Dominant mind in IPE.......1999-07-15
In this offering Samir solidifies his position in the field of IPE. Center/periphery polarization is concomitant with an antidemocratic constuction of a global political system that subverts the once auto-centerd nation state. By virtue of the five monopolies, the West has controlled both the political and economic development of the world and given rise to a market economy that, in collusion with the political sphere, has subverted political rights and powers to the advantage of capital and its minnions. Hope can only be found when democratic and auto-centered political influence reigns in it's bastard son- the market, and defines it's parameters.
Book Description
Organizational Culture provides a sweeping interdisciplinary overview of the organizational culture literature, showing how and why researchers have disagreed about such fundamental questions as: What is organizational culture? What are the major theoretical perspectives used to understand cultures in organizations? How can a researcher decipher the political interests inherent in research that claims to be political neutral -- merely "descriptive"?
Expert author Joanne Martin examines a variety of conflicting ways to study cultures in organizations, including different theoretical orientations, political ideologies (managerial, critical, and apparently neutral); methods (qualitative, quantitative, and hybrid approaches), and styles of writing about culture (ranging from traditional to postmodern and experimental). In addition, she offers a guide for those who might want to study culture themselves, addressing such issues as: What qualitative, quantitative, and hybrid methods can be used to study culture? What standards are used when reviewers evaluate these various types of research? What innovative ways of writing about culture have been introduced? And finally, what are the most important unanswered questions for future organizational culture researchers?
Intended for graduate students and established scholars who need to understand, value, and utilize highly divergent approaches to the study of culture. The book will also be useful for researchers who do not study culture, but who are interested in the ways political interests affect scholarly writing, the ways critical and managerial approaches to theory differ, the use and justification of qualitative methods in domains where quantitative methods are the norm.
Customer Reviews:
A complex phenomenon becomes easy to grasp.......2003-03-25
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I also used it - particularly the 3-perspective approach - as a basis for teaching a graduate course on organizational culture. I found that also for the students it was a very accessible and comprehensive volume on a rather complex research field.
Instructive though repetitive.......2003-02-24
It is a useful source of info for those who are interested in the theory and perspectives of organizational culture studies. It discusses at large, (sometimes excessively...!), past and current issues and controversies within this field of study.
The content is excellent, the repetitive style is cumbersome.
A Treasure Map.......2002-11-27
This aptly titled book is an excellent guide to research on organizational culture. Martin's three perspective theory highlights and demystifies major controversies in organizational culture scholarship. Of additional interest to doctoral students considering or engaged in qualitative research are well-written sections comparing research methods, writing styles, and commentaries from reviewers. Packed with illustrative examples throughout, the book should become a classic among students of organizational culture and organizational studies more generally. Readers may not agree with all of Martin's views, but can nevertheless expect to deepen their understanding of issues in the field and gain clarity around individual orientations within it.
A great overview of organizational culture.......2002-09-23
This book is a most comprehensive, up to date guide for anyone who wants to know more about organizational culture. Written in a clear and informal way, it summarizes, critiques, and extends the last two decades of research on the subject, offering advice for anyone who wants to analyze the culture in their own organization, or in a group of organizations, as well as anyone just interested in the subject. The advice is sophisticated, detailed, practical, and aimed for beginning as well as experienced researchers. Unlike most other U.S. books on the subject, this one draws deeply on European as well as North American scholarship and is appreciative of the difficulties of both qualitative and quantitative methods for studying culture.

Book Description
In this book Peter Lindert evaluates environmental concerns about soil degradation in two very large countries--China and Indonesia--where anecdotal evidence has suggested serious problems. Lindert does what no scholar before him has done: using new archival data sets, he measures changes in soil productivity over long enough periods of time to reveal the influence of human activity.
China and Indonesia are good test cases because of their geography and history. China has been at the center of global concerns about desertification and water erosion, which it may have accelerated with intense agriculture. Most of Indonesia¹s lands were created by volcanoes and erosion, and its rapid deforestation and shifting slash-burn agriculture have been singled out for international censure.
Lindert's investigation suggests that human mismanagement is not on average worsening the soil quality in China and Indonesia. Human cultivation lowers soil nitrogen and organic matter, but has offsetting positive effects. Economic development and rising incomes may even lead to better soil. Beyond the importance of Lindert's immediate findings, this book opens a new area of study--quantitative soil history--and raises the standard for debating soil trends.
Customer Reviews:
Innovative use of archival data for soil degradation trends.......2002-05-17
The title of the book is an allusion to the widely known and influential Losing Ground by Eckholm (1976), one of the early doom-sayers, who like several writers after him warned of the dangers of soil erosion and the impending calamity in food security. Lindert came, with respect to China and Indonesia, to a different conclusion which is partly unconvincing. He deals with arable soils only, representing a small percentage of the total area. His methodology of using archival soil analyses is innovative, but using data for total P and total K and an uncommon statistical analysis, makes the findings very doubtful and unconvincing. The overall picture is more complicated, with patchy improvements as concluded here, but also with well documented severe local erosion and desertification examples, disregarded in this treatment. Recommended for a serious evaluation and as a challenge for obtaining better data for such trend analyses.
Shifting Ground uses doubtful methodology.......2002-01-24
I wrote a rather critical review, but it disappeared from the screen. Please recover it.

This book by a master of the art of psychotherapy.......2002-12-05
Sheldon Kopp practiced as a true master of the art and technique of psychotherapy. One's own personality is part of the tool bag available to a psychotherapist. Uncertain beginners may be inspired by this book, or they may be a tad intimidated. If you are not ready for this one, try Kopp's earlier "Guru" or "Buddha" books. Come back to this one after you have gained more real experience as a psychotherapist -- that would be a reasonable way to begin to become aware of the work of this impressive figure.
Rigid and outdated psychotherapy method........1998-08-23
This book offers a description of how the author conducts psychotherapy. I hope there aren't many people following his guidelines; they are rigid and off-putting. The therapy situation should be a collaborative effort, not one in which the therapist is all-powerful, all-knowing and over-controlling. If I met my therapist on an elevator and he aknowledged my presence by closing his eyes and concentrating on his breathing, I would not make it all the way to his office. Much better books on psychotherapy are The Heart of Psychotherapy by George Weinberg and On Being a Therapist by Jeffrey Kottler. Read these instead. I'm sending back Back to One.
A must read for all students/practitioners of psychotherapy.......1998-06-27
I read this book as an assignment during my internship at a mental health counseling center. It examines the relationship between the therapist and client in a way that was not done in any of my coursework. It was very readable, and I would recommend it to any psychotherapy student interested in the dynamics of the relationship between therapists and clients.

Book Description
Ecotoxicology is becoming more prominent in the curricular of wildlife, biology and environmental science departments in Universities and College. This book is a response to that development and addresses some of the aspects which have become more significant over recent years such as ecological risk assessment and biomarkers. However it takes a broad view of the subject ranging from the chemical and biochemical level to ecosystems and management. The book is aimed primarily at undergraduate students who have completed basic courses in biology and chemistry. The book will also be useful to consultants, civil servants and others in water quality evaluation, waste engineering, environmental impact assessment, biological conservation and toxic chemical management
Book Description
This title serves as a primary resource and reference in the field of environmental toxicology, studying all aspects of toxic compounds, their effect on living organisms, and their chemical and physical behaviour. The second edition provides an enhanced, thouroughly revised volume of an established text on the essentials of toxicology chemistry and the environment.
Customer Reviews:
Outstandingly written and very informative for scientists.......2000-12-28
This is perhaps one of the more intellectual stimulating toxicology books put out for the general public. Landis, unlike many of his modern day contemporaries, literally gives the reader an indepth insight into the discipline of toxicology as related to biology, chemistry, ecology, and general mathematics. Furthermore, the author significantly explains the beneficial use of Risk Assessments and Risk Analysis as related to ecotoxicity and exposure in the environment.
From an environmental science standpoint, the author communicates his ideas and theoretical/scientific idealms well to the reader for he or she to get a thorough understanding. Terms and scientific expressions as related to the field of environmental toxicology are well explained throughout the text.
This book is a must have for all those desiring a more detailed and thorough scientific and informative background in the field of environmental toxicology as it relates to ecotoxicity and environmental fate and exposure of chemicals in the enviroment.
Book Description
This beautifully illustrated book tells how skiing champion Peter Siebert created a ski resort that became a model of its kind. With over 150 photographs, Vail offers a stunning history of the town and people behind one of the greatest ski resorts in North America.
Customer Reviews:
Memories of Vail.......2000-12-29
This is a must read book for any Vail skier. I am the son of one of Vail's pioneers (Sigi Faller) and enjoyed many wonderful days on the Mountain in the "Glory Years". The book provides a perspective of Amercian history (Camp Hale and WWII) and relates a romantic business success story, especially for those who are independent, entrepreneural and have a love of the outdoors. It's a fascinating account of finding recreational "gold" in the Colorado Rockies. An excellent collection of photos is included.
If you're a ski fanatic - you'll love this book.......2000-12-22
This book captures the spirit of Peter Seibert and Earl Eaton and the early days of their lives and their dream to build Vail and Beaver Creek. The trimuphs are great. Hiking Vail for the first time with skins on the skis and seeing the bowls, what a trip! Getting fired from his dream and then getting asked back during the '89 World Championships - wow!! - what a roller coaster of emotions. If you love great stories and you know the Vail Valley and the ski industry - this book is a must read!!

Customer Reviews:
Hitler was the ultimate Rhetorician.......1998-02-06
In response to oncomput@tri-town.net's review, I found the inclusion of Hitler to be very illuminating. The distinguishing factor between Plato and Hitler is the fact that Hitler used his persuasion techniques for evil. But we must not forget that no matter how heinous, THEY WORKED. Including "Mein Kampf" was not a bad judgment call, in fact it was very effective. Hitler's "success" shows the implications of persuasion in modern and post-modern society, which is a topic that must be coupled with education of argument and fallacies. Do not let moral judgments impede the merit of a reference text on the subject of argument. One would only be looking at the world through a distorted pair of glasses instead of looking critically at the world, which is what rhetoric tries to achieve.
Adolph Hitler sneaks into classroom: The Informed Argument.......1998-01-28
I had fond memories of using the 2nd edition of this book with college classes and so (carelessly, I admit) ordered the 5th for my current class. In it, under "Some Classic Arguments" is an excerpt from *Mein Kampf.* It is treated like the other essays in its section (Plato, Swift, Jefferson, etc.) An oversight? If so, it was also careless. I find this inclusion offensive, misleading and certainly not something I can cope with in the classroom, so am urging my students to return the book.

All of Barbara Marciniak's books are great and full of information about
the things we need to know "Now".
A positive vision.......2007-09-05
I have read many 2012 prophecies, and this one, which says the future is ours to create, is uplifting. There are suggestions, meditations, and even a game, to help move in good directions. It is helpful advice.
Best so far from Author.......2007-05-13
Path of Empowerment was the latest and best so far from this author. I have read all her previous books more than once because I find them dense with information, and because as the reader develops, the reading gets even better. This latest book was clearer and easier to follow. Especially for people who might have any difficulty with Pleadian origins or plural dimensions, this book keeps a mention of those things more in the background thus making the material more accessible. Ann C.
Marciniak tying it all together.......2007-05-12
Thank you to Barbara Marciniak for making it possible for us to understand what is going on. If her other channellings resonated with you, this one ties it all together. Many 'universal' items discussed.... if you have read any Jose Arguelles books, both authors/channellers are giving us guidepaths. This book also gets into and reminds one to breath, meditate, etc... with good advice for us all. Many ideas are reiterated in many different ways, and I think that repetition is good teaching. This book is a great service.
