"In China, I feel the explosive combination of forces aligning to create the kind of change that alters the course of history," writes David Sheff in the introduction to China Dawn, his book on the entrepreneurs who are trying to spark a social transformation and make a mint as they bring the latest information technology to the planet's most populous country. The idealistic heroes of this story are Bo Feng and Edward Tian, both friends of the author. Feng is a Marin County busboy who becomes one of China's top venture capitalists; Tian is the cofounder of AsiaInfo, the first private Chinese firm to go public in the West. Like so many others, Feng and Tian were deeply affected by the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, and they believe the Internet can set their country on an irreversible course toward freedom. At bottom, though, China Dawn is an engaging business book that chronicles the "unlikely group of revolutionaries" who hope to become the Bill Gates and Andy Groves of their country. It is difficult to know whether they will succeed, but hard not to wish them luck. --John Miller
Book Description
Imagine living through the breakthrough moments of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and the other icons of today's new economy. The kind of technological revolution that they led in Silicon Valley is now sweeping through China, but with much more dramatic implications. The dynamic entrepreneurs who are using technology to radically transform business and cultural life in China are fighting not only outdated business models and a tumultuous economy but also an unpredictable government that has a love-hate relationship with the Net, at once pushing its expansion at a feverish pace and censoring it. As Duncan Clark, cofounder of BDA, an Internet consulting company in Beijing, told author David Sheff, "This environment -- the regulations, the competition, the political uncertainties -- makes these the fastest, most courageous, nimblest-thinking people globally. To deal with this level of risk and still sleep is no small accomplishment. But they're hooked on it like some Chinese are becoming hooked on Starbucks cappuccino."
In this irresistible, groundbreaking book, Sheff takes us into the trenches of the Chinese technology revolution, introducing the major and minor players who are leading China into the twenty-first century. Players like Bo Feng, the charismatic former sushi chef who is now one of the leading venture capitalists in China. And Edward Tian, a national hero who has been described as China's Steve Jobs and Bill Gates combined, who left his own start-up on the eve of its IPO in order to lead the government's attempt to bring broadband to the entire nation, in the process leapfrogging the United States, Europe, and the rest of Asia with the longest and fastest network in the world.
As the U.S. technological revolution wanes, business leaders will be looking to the billion-plus potential customers in China for new growth. In addition, the world's newest member of the World Trade Organization will no longer be a bystander in the global economy; it will be a fierce competitor. And when hundreds of million Chinese have access to unprecedented information and communication, China itself will be profoundly altered. Jay Chang, an analyst who covers China for Credit Suisse First Boston, sums the seismic nature of the changes: "What happens when China successfully transforms from a mainly agrarian/industrial nation into one that has significant input from the information technology industry? What happens when eighty percent of the state-owned enterprises in China are able to link economically to the global Internet on fast pipes? What happens when China's engineering talent pool is able to gain access to high-end computing resources and exchange ideas and information easily with their global peers? What happens when fifty percent of the Chinese population gets wired in ten years -- six hundred million people, the largest number of Internet users in the world?" With its compelling, character-driven story, researched over the course of three years, China Dawn will be the definitive book on the subject.

Fascinating.......2006-01-05
This book gives us an insight into the brave, opportunistic, patriotic entrepeneurs who decided to have a run for their money investing in the IT industry in China. The author happened to be intimate friends to the entrepeneurs (venture capitalists and founders of IT companies) mentioned and suffice to say that this is like a documentary as we were brought into the environment where they sought for opportunities, negotiating and bargaining for their positions, keeping the "ship" afloat by ensuring the new enterprises are making money and ensuring that they are keeping the Chinese Government and shareholders happy at the same time. This is easily said than done as Chinese government is cautious about relinquishing too much contol to the public (stock options to the staff wasn't heard of before) and that opening up China to the world would mean free attainment of information. As Chinese firmly believes, information is power, a power that can change the destiny of a nation. This book is written when China was working hard to be inducted into the WTO and before China was announced to be the country to host the next Olympics. Suffice to say that this book is like a time capsule or a yardstick to see how much China has gone since and asking if China is progressing any further. Whilst this is a business book, it is also a book touching upon issues of self-sacrifice as the entrepeneurs are forever on the road at the expense of spending quality time with their young family and also dwelled upon the past of Cultural Revolution and other presecutions that created or formed the personalities and traits of the present Chinese generations that would move mountain and ocean to do what needs to be done to actualise their vision. The old adage of "if the experience doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger" is very relevant in this instance. A contagious book to read, a book about humanity and a book that reminds us how quick China has grown in so little time. Napoleon was right to say that when the dragon wakes up, the whole world shall shudder. Highly recommended!
Fascinating read, presents an optimistic perspective on high-tech in China.......2005-10-24
This book was a fascinating read, and presents a personal take on the growth of technology and the rise of entrepreneurship in China. However, at points in the book, it seemed that the author is a bit too optimistic and overlooks some of the major challenges against China becoming a high-tech superpower.
This book is a purely a domcom story.......2003-07-31
The characters in this book are not what the book described since the author is the personal friend of the characters. This is purely free publicity for them. Search the web and you will find other comments about the auther. The latest story is the VCs have splited since they can't really get along, and the politics in the VC firm was unbearable with just a few people. Most of the portfolio companies are in bad shape. The VC's website has not been updated since 2001, wonder why. If you really want to know about IT in China, then you should learn from other sources. Most of the IT companies in China are not making money. This book only gives you a picture of the early dotcom years and we all know what happened. Don't judge the book by the cover or the content. It is only a perspective from one person.
Awesome.......2003-06-26
This book was awesome, I highly recommend it as a great introductory book into the business revolution in China, however it does not go too much in depth into the complexities of China's evolution in the past 20 years. But Sheff tells a great story and it is definitly a page turner!
Astounding.......2003-06-24
One of the best business books I have ever read. It is an inspiring story, written with insight and passion. I'm ready to pack up and head to China.

Book Description
When it comes down to it, work-with its cliques, gossips, and brown-nosers-is a lot like high school. This clever and useful book helps readers identify and effectively communi-cate with these and other common types we all remember from the days when term papers, not business reports, were our assignments, and when the big social event was the prom, not the company picnic. You don't need to dig out your yearbook to get a glimpse of these types-just take a look around your office: - the Teacher's Pet - the Flirt - the Cheerleader - the Party Animal - the Geek - the Class Clown - and more. With wit and uncanny accuracy, corporate coaches Wilma Davidson and John Dougherty outline all twenty-four mem-bers of the 'class,' offering tips on working efficiently with each type, whether they're your boss, your client, or a collea-gue. The book also delivers advice on handling authority, con-formity, looks, popularity, 'sex education,' and other issues. Invaluable for the reformed Rebel and the former Class President alike, this unique self-help/business guide will delight and instruct.

Interesting but no real insight.......2004-07-23
According to the authors, ?High school is never over. The workplace ? is just an adult version of high school.? To support that proposition, the authors present a lengthy list of behaviors and personalities that supposedly are observable in high schools and are then transferred into workplaces. Their claim that these reflect ?core? traits of an individual is somewhat undermined by a call for readers to ?reinvent? themselves by altering these core approaches. Can one simply change a core trait?
There are desirable and undesirable ?archetypes.? On the plus side are the ?A Student, Class Clown, Rebel, Jock, Teacher?s Pet, Geek, Party Animal, Loner, Cheerleader, Straight Arrow, Go-getter, Class President, Thespian, Activist, and Underachiever.? On the negative side of the ledger are the ?Snob, Complainer, Prima Donna, Gossip, Brown-noser, Know-it-all, Bully, Cheater, and Player.?
It may strike some readers that this breakdown of types, especially for high school, is overly complicated with too narrow of distinctions. Typically, in high schools there are smart kids, jocks, cheerleaders, and regular kids. The negativities that the authors discuss are not appreciably evidenced. However, high school cliques can be far more harshly enforced than among co-workers. An area that the authors do not go near is the impact of family wealth in differentiating high school kids. The pecking order in high school largely conforms to social standing in the greater community. The more well-to-do kids are generally more socially adept and have more resources and the support to join various teams and clubs and perform better in the classroom. Of course, some overcome their economic disadvantages. In so far as distinctions in high school do reflect economics, it would be hard to make a case that various roles and behaviors necessarily reflect a person?s core.
It would have been interesting for the authors to comment on the usefulness of their analysis of personality and behavior compared to such evaluative tools as the Briggs Myers Personality Indicator based on the four dimensions of extraversion (E) vs. introversion (I), sensing (S) vs. intuition (N), thinking (T) vs. feeling (F), and judging (J) vs. perceiving (P). Does it mean more to say that someone is an ?A student? as opposed to being an ?ISTJ? type? What would an employer want to know?
Frankly most of the authors? archetypes pertain to adults and to workplaces rather than to teenagers. Adults are far richer in their diversity. The list for adults could be larger. The Habitual Parent and the Back-stabber come to mind. The authors also contend that the structure of businesses and high schools is such that students and employees find them selves in a similar position. But the workplace environment is far more complicated. Navigating mine fields is often required to get ahead; school in its core function does not. Grades more or less comport with performance, but promotions and pay reflect far more than performance. Teachers do not fire students on a whim; bosses can and do. There really is no equivalent in high school to the one-sided distribution of power in workplaces and the consequences for employees.
It may well be that there is a correlation between the role or behavior of an individual in high school and his or her position later in a workplace. The authors do not specifically say that. They only contend that certain archetypes are found in both locations. The authors do not make a good case for the inevitability of core traits. They largely miss social, economic, and political factors that have a lot to do with where people wind up, despite any core personality characteristics. It would not be surprising to learn that a large percentage of the workforce is misplaced if core orientation is the standard. School to work transition in the US has always been known to be haphazard, unlike efforts made in Europe.
Light reading.......2004-02-27
The information was useful and I will keep the book for refrerence. It did remind me of reading books on astrological signs. Finally, I did not laugh out loud once while reading this book as previous reviewers all seem to do.
Most Likely to Succeed at Work: How Work Is Just Like High S.......2003-09-08
This book is refreshingly humorous and is a must-read for anyone who has to work with people in the workplace - that would include most of us. Whether you are in upper management or just starting out, you must know how to navigate your way through the politics of the workplace. This book gives you both an interesting perspective and sound advice on how to do so successfully.
The book simply breaks your colleagues into the same personalities that existed in your high school classroom - the more things change the more they stay the same. Once you take a step back and think about the motivations associated with workplace behavior, you'll look at it differently and, perhaps even change a few of your responses to the behavior. At a minimum the book arouses a greater sense of awareness about your colleagues. While we are all individuals, we do tend to fall into a finite number of personality categories - even though we may adapt some of the qualities of the others to our own from time to time.
I found myself laughing out loud and shaking my head affirmatively as I read through each archetype. This book puts a fresh spin on some of the oldest struggles faced by every worker, regardless of where they work. It is a quick read and one that you can read in a series of 10 minute snippets or the entire book on your next flight.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Learning To Be A More Successful You.......2003-07-03
This book about maximizing your success in the business world offers common sense advice about how to achieve your goals. The authors' organization combined with clever humor makes you look forward to the next chapter. When you read the examples that the authors use to emphasize that chapter's purpose, you smile, nod, and think this is way to successfully approach this person or problem. At the completion of the book, you can visualize the person you can become and you have the tools to be that person.
Insights you can use.......2003-07-01
This is a smart, practical guide to understanding people at work (and dealing with them more effectively) -- using insights from the social experiences we all had in high school. It's a great premise, and the authors really deliver. They are funny, sharp, and wise. Stop complaining about people at work and get this book to learn how to improve things once and for all!

Have you ever wondered where waves come from? What makes every one different, why some peel nicely and others just close out? Why, some days, waves come in sets of six and others in sets of three, and what factors affect the behavior of a surfing break? If you have, this book is for you. Now in its second edition, Surf Science is the first book to talk in depth about the science of waves from a surfer's point of view. It fills the gap between surfing books and waves textbooks and will help you learn how to predict surf. You don't need a scientific background to read it--just curiosity and a fascination for waves.
Customer Reviews:
Two words... "Surf Science".......2007-08-23
Two words... "Surf Science".
And this is absolutely the best title for this book. A must have for all the surfers that are interested not only in surfing good waves, but for all of them that are interested in knowing how and why the waves break so well or so bad. Wind, wave perfection, cost line, sandbars, reefs, rocks, wave frequency, channels, hollowness, etc... every aspect that affects the wave is explored in this book with great depth.
Everything is very well explained in this book and in a language that is very accessible to all people.
Are you a surfer, an ocean enthusiast? Read it!.......2007-01-05
I always lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and this is a very large "surf city". I have surfed recreationallly for about 20 years now, and I can say that this book should be read by anyone who likes surfing of any kind, or fishes by the ocean, or lives by the ocean, or just plain likes the ocean and live in a landlocked place.
Very easy reading, very good graphics, and very understandable for a very complicated issue. I'm buying almost all the book that the authors recommend.
32 bucks for pics of waves NO THANKS.......2006-09-28
Spend your money wisely; for 32 dollars you can get 24 issues of surfer mag. You'll learn alot more about surfing rather than make some author rich.
great topical coverage.......2005-03-23
This book is written for the layman and has great illustrations to back up some very complicated topics ranging from climatology and atmospherics to answering the "simple" question: what makes a good wave?
If you have never studied weather patterns, buoys, or local surfbreaks, you stand to learn a lot from this book. It covers all aspects of wave science without the heavy textbook feel. Those with a formal science background will find this an easy read and be tempted to look into the references for a bit more of the equations behind the science.
One point that it did not cover was the physics in the surfing of waves. It hits hard on "what makes a wave" but doesn't touch the "what is surfing" question. Reading this book will not make you a better surferbut, it will teach you how waves form and yield some insight into wave prediction.
Great popular science book, not just for surfers.......2005-01-24
I've never surfed in my life but read this book as a scientist with an interest in fluid mechanics. The book introduces a wide range of concepts and models, starting from large-scale climate patterns, to storms and generation of waves, to their propagation and evolution, taking the reader step-by-step through some rather complex phenomena. The writing is plain and accessible to a non-physicist, yet scientific, making this book a pleasure to read. My favourite section was probably the one on climate patterns, which discusses the atmosphere as a non-equilibrium, dissipative system driven by the energy of the Sun and coupled to the rotation of the Earth - and manages to do it quite well without introducing a single equation. For those wishing more mathematics, there is a list of references for further reading. I did find one or two minor blunders, such as the statement that "the equator is warmer than the poles because it is closer to the Sun" (the reason it is warmer is, of course, in the different incidence angles of sunlight), or equations with no units. Another warning is that this is a book about the physics of *waves*, not the hydrodynamics of surfing. But overall, this is a great piece of popular science. Any teacher who values problem-based learning will appreciate it - as, hopefully, will any surfer who wants to know why waves behave the way they do.

Essentials of Fire Fighting IV Study Guide.......2001-10-26
I found the study guide very helpful. Although the questions aren't exactly like the ones on the test, they are close and if you know the material in the study guide you can pass the tests. I had a couple of tests prior to the arrival of the guide and saw my scores improve after using the study guide. I used the true/false questions the most by correcting the false questions to make them true. This way I learned the material and could answer other questions that appeared on the actual test. I would recommend the guide for those getting started in FF and want to do well on the tests.
The Essentials Of Fire Fighting.......2000-03-27
" This book is very good in explaining the "How To" in fire fighting, great for volunteer fire fighters as well."
Book Description
Is truth knowable? If we know the truth, must we hide it in the name of tolerance? Cardinal Ratzinger engages the problem of truth, tolerance, religion and culture in the modern world. Describing the vast array of world religions, Ratzinger embraces the difficult challenge of meeting diverse understandings of spiritual truth while defending the Catholic teaching of salvation through Jesus Christ. "But what if it is true?" is the question that he poses to cultures that decry the Christian position on man's redemption. Upholding the notion of religious truth while asserting the right of religious freedom, Cardinal Ratzinger outlines the timeless teaching of the Magisterium in language that resonates with our embattled culture. A work of extreme sensitivity, understanding, and spiritual maturity, this book is an invaluable asset to those who struggle to hear the voice of truth in the modern religious world.
"Beyond all particular questions, the real problem lies in the question about truth. Can truth be recognized? Or, is the question about truth simply inappropriate in the realm of religion and belief? But what meaning does belief then have, what positive meaning does religion have, if it cannot be connected with truth?"
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger From the Preface

Evangelical Leader Returns to Catholicism.......2007-08-03
May 5, 2007-- The president of the Evangelical Theological Society, Francis J. Beckwith, announced that he has returned to the Catholic Church.
From the Wash. Post article, May 7, 2007: "After studying Ratzinger's book "Truth and Tolerance" last year, he said, he called a prominent evangelical philosopher, read him a passage about whether theology is realy knowledge, and asked him to guess the author. 'He reeled off the names of a bunch of evangelical theologians,' Beckwith recalled. 'I said, 'No, it's Ratzinger!' And he said, 'So he's one of us!'"
Understanding Our Times........2007-06-12
In an age of multiculturalism and moral relativity and diversities of religions, this book analyses the place of truth and Christianity in the world in our confused times. Many great insights. Pope Benedict XVI shows his great understanding of religion and philosophy in this book. This book will become ever more relevant with time, certainly now more than ever.
A Nice Presentation of The Ratzinger's (Benedict XVI) Actual Opinion!.......2007-05-25
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) published the `controversial' document, "Dominus Iesus: On The Unicity and Salvific Universality of Jesus Christ and the Church" in 2000. We have not stopped hearing or talking about it since. Commonly understood as a polemical rag against non-Christian (and non-Catholic-Christian) faiths, in its truest sense it remains to be seen as groundbreaking. Quite simply, it is a reiteration of long-held Catholic doctrinal beliefs. What became `controversial' was the way the language was used in the document - matters made worse by overly literal translations of Latin philosophical jargon into English that muddied meaning and to the non-trained eye, appeared as something it most certainly was not. That aside. In response to the overwhelming criticism leveled against the CDF and its then-prefect, Joseph Ratzinger, Cardinal Ratzinger (the scholar that he is) felt it necessary to present an intelligent elucidation into the matter from his own personal scholarly view. We have "Truth and Tolerance."
For those critics who make the claim that Ratzinger's work varies significantly from pre-1968 to post-1968 along the continuum of "liberal-conservative" are in for a surprise. The first chapter - an essay published in the mid `60s, in, of all things a Festschrift for Karl Rahner - was written early in the young scholar's career and the parts that follow reflect developments from the early `90s through the early `00s. This collective work expresses a continuity that allows for a successful cohesion of trans-decade scholarship, otherwise impossible by the standard of judgment presumed by would-be critics. The bottom line: read what the man says for himself versus the temptation to engage in hearsay-based discourse that is entirely unfounded. While his tone is very academic and the text dense, Ratzinger does make clear his position and the philosophical basis for such conclusions. Regardless of one's personal ecclesial-political position, you owe it to yourself to read both the entire text of "Dominus Iesus" and "Truth and Tolerance" to understand what the Holy See via CDF says and what the person of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) says.
Read this book.
Ratzinger Shines on a Popular Modern Theological Topic.......2006-07-07
The matters covered in this book are sundry by its very nature. For that reason, I will not attempt to completely outline the work. Nonetheless, the brief review below will state the general strengths of the text as a whole and partially in particular.
Religious pluralism is a topic of great interest in most modern theology schools. For better or for worse, many schools subordinate much to this question. If this is good or not depends much on the ultimate intention of those who are striving. Are they striving for the Truth or only for relative pluralism? With respect to this, Ratzinger addresses the question from a learned, Catholic standpoint. He is not afraid to draw lines in order to make points when it comes to the differences which exist in this realm. Nonetheless, he also acknowledges where dialogue can begin and how this is related to the Truth.
The true strength of this text is in the fact that it is willing to take up dialogue with (and sometimes against) a variety of philosophies and religions. It is ultimately interested in the turns of the mind which have happened in modernity, making man more interested in incommunicable, unknowable truth that only finds expression in praxis. Ratzinger thus spends much of his time speaking of the questions of Eastern Mysticism as well as Marxism and other modern philosophies.
Because of this open dialogue, this text is most excellent. Ratzinger doesn't give up any ground on the Truth, for the sacrifice of the Truth in dialogue gets man nowhere. I suggest this text very highly and also would suggest his work "Many Religions - One Covenant: Israel, the Church, and the World" as a preparatory investigation into his thoughts on religious dialogue.
I love this 'German Shepherd'.......2006-04-07
This book should be read by anyone who wonders why the Church insists that truth is not relative... Ratzinger [now Benedict XVI] makes a strong case for the following:
1. Truth is a reality
2, Truth is not relative
3. Truth can be known
4. This Truth is revealed in Christ
5. Relationship between what Christ showed the world and other forms of belief. Ultimately the author states that beliefs can be broken down into the one Christ revealed in contrast with the Eastern belief that Gdd is not knowable. He goes onto show why this latter belief system is misguided.
Even if you do not agree with his view point, you can clearly see where the battle lines are drawn.
I am not sure you will find a better book on this subject. This Shepherd of the Church will keep you on the straight path!
