5 out of 5 stars Nice blend of practical description and theoretical insight.......2005-06-12

I am a computer scientist with some interest in personal finance, and I was looking for a book that can provide both practical descriptions of modern investment instruments as well some theoretical insight into how the instruments are valued and operated. For me, investment is an interesting and highly useful branch of applied mathematics.

I spotted this book on my wife's book shelf (she bought the book for her MBA class), and found it exactly what I want. The book covers major categories of investment options, including stocks, bonds, options, futures, money market instruments, and mutual funds. The book begins by describing these instruments in general, and then dive into details on each instrument. The majority of the book is devoted to stock analysis but it also covers the most important concepts for other instruments.

If you are looking for a simple investment cook book, I would recommend Eric Tyson's "Investing for Dummies", which does not go into detailed mathematical models. However, if you are someone interested in deeper math theory, then this could be a good book for you. For example, I highly enjoy the chapters on modern portfolio theory and fundamental analysis, as well the equations for calculating bond durations and volatility. On the practical side, I am also delighted that the book taught me something complimentary to what I have learned from other sources and personal investment experience.

This is certainly not a perfect book. One major problem I found is that the authors sometimes do not give enough explanation of the math equations, or explanations are given in verbose English which can be tersely stated in a few equations. For example, in discussing the volatility of time diversification, the authors tried to explain that even though the variance of average annualized return tends to reduce with longer investment horizon, the variance of actual dollar return actually increases. In my first reading of this portion, I was confused by this apparent paradox (in plain English), but later I realized that this can be explained by a simple exponential equation; if the final return is R(t, r) = exp(t times r), where t is the number of years in investment and r is the annualized return, then decreasing variance in r while increasing t would actually increase the variance of R(t, r).

Let me stop here before I started to get too nerdy with my review. But overall, I highly recommend this book. I know it is a little bit pricy, but hey, I read it for free anyway.

              Book Description

"Michael Handel has assembled an authoritative and wide-ranging collection of key articles in the organizations field, and complements these papers with a terrific critical survey of the literature. His introductory essays will benefit both students and researchers alike. This collection is a real service to the field."

              - Walter W. Powell, Stanford University

"A unique reader and commentary with broad coverage of the classics, combined with a healthy skepticism about received theories and an emphasis on the impact of organizations on society. The lucid commentary brightens the field."

              - Charles Perrow, Yale University

For the first time, a single volume offers a comprehensive selection of primary readings and companion overview essays on the sociology of organizations. These readings and essays provide incisive and guided coverage of the subjects normally included in a one-semester sociology of organizations course.

The Sociology of Organizations covers the full range of theoretical perspectives and substantive topics through readings that are either classics in the field or widely discussed and debated "new classics."

Section introductions explain key terms and concepts, provide illustrations, and summarize related debates and research in clear prose. The depth of these overview essays makes this book ideal for use as either as a stand-alone text or a supplementary reader. After reading this book, students will have a thorough understanding of central concepts and an appreciation of the primary texts that are the foundation of the field.

Scholars and students in the fields of sociology, management, organizational behavior, and organizational psychology and those within political science and economics who are interested in how organizations function will find this work a welcome, invaluable resource.

              Book Description

Historical Geography of Crop Plants is devoted to a variety of staple and food crops, as well as fodder, fiber, timber, rubber, and other crops. The origins and histories of many of these crops have been clarified only recently by new research. The book has been arranged alphabetically by family and higher taxa for easy reference. Within families, species and cultivars are listed chronologically and geographically. The taxonomy and geography of probable wild progenitors have been outlined, and archeological evidence (when available) and historical evidence on region and domestication are traced. The subsequent evolution and spread of many domesticated species are examined, and the reasons behind the diversity in crop histories are explored. Historical Geography of Crop Plants will be a useful reference for botanists, economic botanists, ethnobiologists, agronomists, geographers, and others interested in the subject.

              5 out of 5 stars A select book.......2000-07-08

This is a scholarly summary of what is known about the origins of our prominent crop plants; botanically and geographically. This book is very carefully written and avoids any unnecessary ramifications. However it does contain a wealth of detail: why is one of the American cottons traded under the name of 'Egyptian cotton'? What is the crop with most sets of chromosomes? Etc, etc. Highly recommend for those interested in the backgrounds of the worlds crops.

                  Book Description

A timely complement to John Bruer's Schools for Thought, Classroom Lessons documents eight projects that apply cognitive research to improve classroom practice. The chapter authors are all principal investigators in an influential research initiative on cognitive science and education. Classroom Lessons describes their collaborations with classroom teachers aimed at improving teaching and learning for students in grades K-12. The eight projects cover writing, mathematics, history, social science, and physics. Together they illustrate that principles emerging from cognitive science form the basis of a science of instruction that can be applied across the curriculum.

The book is divided into three sections:

                  - applications of cognitive research to teaching specific content areas;
                  - applications for learning across the curriculum; and
                  - applications that challenge traditional concepts of classroom-based learning environments.

Chapters consider explicit models of knowledge with corresponding instruction designed to enable learners to build on that knowledge, acquisition of specified knowledge, and what knowledge is useful in contemporary curricula.

3 out of 5 stars Needs more careful editing........2007-02-28

This book has a lot that would be useful to a new HS coach, but unfortunately it seems that there was a lack of communication/checking between the author and the person who DTP'ed the diagrams. The diagrams contain many errors and inconsistencies which sometimes make it difficult to understand the plays and drills. Some arrows are missing or pointing in the opposite direction from what the descriptions indicate, offensive players are sometimes marked with an "X", diagrams occasionally show the ball going to one player while the description indicates a pass to a different player, etc.

Furthermore, the descriptions themselves could have been a little more detailed in places. It's clear that Coach Kuchar knows his basketball, but it's surprisingly difficult to explain basketball plays on paper, and I think this book would have benefited from a careful check by somebody who represents the target audience: a new coach with some understanding of the game but who doesn't already know what the author is trying to say.

My advice is to wait for the second edition.

This has everything a high school coach needs to run a sucessful program. It does not go into great depth as other books do, it is more concise and assumes you know the fundamentals. It has a great drill section and practice itinerary. You do not need your own practice plan-If you follow Bills plan your on the road to success.

                        Book Description

The Curious Researcher 3/e offers a fresh approach to research by reminding readers that curiosity is still the best reason for uncovering information and ideas. This author provides ample proof that the research process, like the writing process, can be full of rewarding discoveries. Using a variety of examples from both professional writers and students, this book shows that good research and lively writing do not have to be mutually exclusive. Readers are encouraged to not only develop sound research and analytical skills, but to examine ways to bring their writing to life, even though they're writing with "facts." Though The Curious Researcher stands apart from similar texts because of its motivational qualities, it also features full explanations of the technical aspects of the research paper. MLA citation conventions are given extensive treatment, and APA standards are also explained in the Appendix. For writers of research papers.

This review is a collaborative writing project completed by a section of ENGL/135 students at DeVry University in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is based on the students' experiences in using Ballenger's book as a textbook during the first three weeks of the class.

We give this book an ecstatic thumbs up! Here are just a few examples of its excellencies:

                        * Includes good examples.
                        * Focuses specifically on formal research papers.
                        * Provides up-to-date guidelines for both internet and library research.
                        * Presents the reader with a step-by-step guide to writing research papers.
                        * Is easy to read and well formatted.
                        * Demystifies its subject.
                        * Maintains a friendly tone.
                        * Contains comprehensive instructions on both APA and MLA formats.
                        * Explains exactly how to format footnotes, citations, and references.
                        * Discusses ways to find a topic and includes a large list of examples.
                        * Helps ESL students to master the complexities of formal English writing.

Our only suggestion for improvement: we'd like to see Ballenger elaborate more on such matters as punctuation and grammar in research papers.

Overall, we have found this book to be very useful in our ENGL/135 composition class.

Forget all the reviews beneath that say this book isn't for college students. These stodgy English Professor types are exactly the audience who are guarenteed to hate a book that promotes and teaches, passion, curiousity, and most important, voice in student research papers. For the rest of us the Curious Researcher is a breath of fresh air. Bruce Ballenger comes at us from a writers, not a teachers point of view. He illustrates how to transform what is traditionally known in the trade as a "terminal paper" into an exploration, brimming with life, fact and literary panache.
He also manages to squeeze in all the fundamental research skills and gives teachers exercizes on how to teach them. Any teacher who sees this book as a "huge waste of time," (see review below) might want to take their cue from UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. "No one is too old to learn the fundamentals." Ballenger brilliantly teaches the fundamentals of teaching voice in non-fiction writing and demonstrates his lessons on each page throught the example of his own writing. This is the Best Book on Research Writing for College or High School ever written. Bravo Bruce!

3 out of 5 stars Good for middle or high school, but not for college students.......2004-02-29

My 200-level college English class is using this as a textbook, and I've been very disappointed with it. It's simply not a college level text. While it is very user-friendly, the material it covers is all stuff a student should have learned long before college. Things like how to write a thesis statement, organize a paper, use libraries and the Internet, evaluate sources for quality, take notes, incorporate quotes into a paper, avoid plagiarism, properly cite sources, use appropriate word choice and sentence variety, and the standards of proper English conventions should all have been taught in middle school / junior high. At this level, the book has been largely useless to me, as it only covers things I already know. The exercises, too, are redundant of little help.

This book would, however, be an excellent text to use in middle school, or even high school. The skills Ballenger teaches here are important, but they should be taught much earlier than college. The format is easy to read, and much less intimidating than many other such books. It's not at all "dry" like so many texts. Ballenger makes frequent use of nice analogies to help the reader understand how certain elements of a paper will help it or harm it. He also gives examples from his students' own papers, which can be very useful. Included in the book are references to valuable Internet research sites, and appendices that cover proper MLA and APA citations. If used earlier in school, this book would be a valuable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Research Text.......2003-11-08

Easy to teach from and the students say that they both learn from it and enjoy it. Most intend to keep the book to refer back to. It is my first choice for a research writing class text.

                        Book Description

The second in a trilogy of Forgotten Realms novels from Thomas M. Reid.
This title continues the trilogy exploring the political intrigue of a mercenary society in the Forgotten Realms world. The entire series is authored by R.A. Salvatore's War of the Spider Queen author and rising star Thomas M. Reid and features stunning cover art from artist Duane O. Meyers.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Series as a whole.......2007-03-31

Great Series! As Forgotten Realms books go this series was a great read. It's nice to see a series cover a different area of the Realms other than the more popular "conflicted" areas. The characters were interesting and the plot and story carried it well enough that the books were a fairly easy read.

                        4 out of 5 stars A big improvement.......2007-02-16

First book of the series, "The Sapphire Crescent" was a bit of a disappointment for my money. "The Ruby Guardian", fortunately, keeps the good things from the first book and improves on the weaker elements.

Again, the plot is brilliant. Just when I thought Reid has exhausted all of the twists in the first book (as it tends to happen in trilogies), he finds a way to weave in a whole heap of new ones. Excellent.
The author gives us even more insight in Chondath, clergy of Waukeen and relations between rivaling merchant Houses than he did in the first novel.
That is where the similarities between the installments end.

Reid greatly improves his storytelling, and stays away from unexpected rescues and rigid dialogues that troubled the first book. The reading is much more entertaining this way.

The characters, which were in my opinion the weakest part of the first novel, do get fleshed out a bit more in this book, but there is still much space for improvement. Reid also introduces a fair number of interesting new characters and some of the old ones get much more space, especially the villains. Usually, if the antagonists get much space in the book, the readers tend to like them more than the often cheesy protagonists. It is not the case with this book. Although the "goodies" are a bit cheesy, the villains are so sadistic and disgusting that you can't really get to like them.

A very good second book. If the author keeps this rate of improvement, we are going to have a fantastic third novel. You should check this one out.

                        4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2006-02-01

To start off this is the second book in a triliogy set in the Forgotten Realms by Thomas M. Reid called The Scions of Arrabar. The Scions I am guessing are those that are 'heirs' or something of the sort.. and Arrabar is the city they are in.

To tell the true, I can't really remmeber much of the first one because I read it a while back, but this on picked up alright and got me on track about page 60. Vambran his sister Emriana thier aunt Xaphira and Uncle .. as well as the rest of the Matrell family were thrown into turmoil in the first book and the family now ( in this book ) have threats from inside planning to take over the estates. Every family member is at risk and it does not look like any are to make it through.

Also, we are introduced to the Druids and thier leader. Thier cause is to take out all those that would harm the forest, but Vambran has other plans for himself then them killing him. The final take in the book is against the entire city of Arrabar and may take the entire world if nothing is done about it.. but that must be found out in the next book, The Emerald Scepter.

If you enjoy deception and misdirection with family ties then you will enjoy this series.. I have yet to find what the "whole scope" of these books are, but hopefully that will be answered in the final. A die hard fantasy fan, that has read a few Forgotten Realms books will enjoy this, and its not too hard to pick up if not although it is easier.

5 out of 5 stars Reid delivers again!.......2005-08-09

With the second book in his first trilogy set in the Forgotten Realms, Thomas Reid hits another home run. He expands on the story told in the first book and fleshes out the characters more fully. Yet, this fleshing out does not detract one bit fromt he plot moving ahead at full speed.

As I said witht he first review, Reid is proving himself to be one of the best up and coming authors in the Forgotten Realms universe. I am eagerly awaiting the final installment of this trilogy.

I miss spoke in the post for the first book. The cliff hanger that ends this book is by far the best one I have ever read!

5 out of 5 stars Thomas does it again.......2005-01-17

Thomas does it yet again. What started in the first is continued here. A fantastic tale, great intrigue, memorable characters. Thomas' skill in writing improves with each release of a new novel. Looking forward to book 3 with extreme eagerness. Keep em coming Thomas!

                          Book Description

Jadyn Rina Hanan carries within her being a certain vampire's immortal soul and had done so for seven lifetimes. Every one hundred years she is reborn and attempts to locate the vampire and return to him that which he lost one thousand years ago.

Each time they make the attempt to break the vampire curse they fail and the cycle begins anew. They discover they are under a curse by the Great One for a failure of duty hundreds of years past when they dwelt in the upper realms. They also learn that they were at one time more than they are today. They are informed that they must discover the secret to a ritual that will take the plea for mercy for the vampire to the feet of the Great One.

Discord breaks out in the vampire nation when others learn that Jadyn has a second soul and they fight for the right to claim it. The Vampire Council then relates to Jadyn and Christopher a tale of lost love, of pure love as they learn more about their past lives.

Can Jadyn and Christopher bring about an end to the vicious cycle they have been forced to endure? Can Jadyn discover the secret that will allow her to take the cry for mercy to the feet of the Great One? And if she does, will He listen to the cry for mercy for the vampire, or will Jadyn always remain the Guardian of an Immortal Soul?

Even though this book is written for an older audience, I really enjoyed it. I liked the author's inovative idea on where vampires originated from. I could feel the love between Jadyn and Christopher in the words she wrote. If I'd see Christopher on the street, I think I'd be in love, too. I can't wait until the next book. I want to know what their child will be like. I heard that Christopher was going to be a vampire again, but I'm not sure how she'll do that. I'm ready for the next book right now. I hear she's going to do five books in the series.
                          Very, very good book.

                                Book Description

Christopher and Jadyn celebrate their eighteenth year together at `The Night Life' club. They discuss their past trials as well as their past triumphs. They plan for their future as well as for their children's future.

Just what sort of children has come from the union of a Pure Vampire and a Guardian? The answer…only the best warriors that can be created. Jadyn, Christopher, and others from the upper realms, work hard to train Peyton and Adrian for the time they will face the evil vampires and ward off their treachery. These children will be the only thing that will stand between evil and immortal life, and between evil and the upper realms.

Jadyn and Peyton begin to dream of a Phantom who is killing off dream Guardians. They discover he is not from the same time reality but from another continuum and that Jadyn is partly at fault for his being able to reach into their reality. The Phantom reaches through the rip, and with each dream Guardian, killed a Benevolent One - a good vampire, is destroyed in real life.

Once ten dream Guardians are killed, the Phantom will be freed. He will join with the Evil One, bring destruction to the middle realm, kill off every good vampire, and then reach the portal to the upper realms in order to overthrow the Masters. The catch: Jadyn and Peyton must be the last two killed in order for the Phantom to be freed.

Jadyn finds herself matched against a power so strong that she is beaten by it many times. How will she keep Immortal Life safe if she is destroyed? How can she keep her daughter safe from the clutches of such a powerful evil? How can she defeat a being that can read her mind and always be one step ahead of her? How can she and Peyton keep from dreaming? Every time they dream they draw one step closer to their own destruction. How will they destroy something that doesn't even exist in their own reality?

I was pleased with this second book in the "Guardian" series. There were a few surprises and I feel that there are more to be revealed in the next four books in the series. There are to be six books in all and I hear through the grapevine that the reason for all the trouble that Christopher and Jadyn have been put through will be revealed in the fifth or sixth book. Can't wait to read the rest.
