This is a huge book shining light on Jung's psychology--both personal & theoretical. I added over 100 quotes from it into my collection--an incredible amount. They address a wide range of topics such as: modern art, telepathy, astrology, fear, schizophrenia, the death penalty, ethics & morality, music, evil, psychological projection, Freud, science & its limits esp. in relation to religion, neologisms (creating new words), doctors vs. scientists, rationality/consciousness vs. non-rationality/unconscious mind, the dangers of groups, ethnic differences, & the nature of analytical psychology.

Of special interest, due to the accusations against Jung of anti-semitism, are the several letters sent in his own defense. Based upon the written material herein, these criticisms appear to be unfounded. For example, he wrote: p. 148 "It is my opinion that the peculiarity of the Jews might explain why they are an absolutely essential symbiotic element in our population. If there were no differences between them and other people, there would be nothing to distinguish them at all and then there would also be nothing in the characteristic influence, amply attested by history, which they have exerted on their environment. It must after all be supposed that a people which has kept itself more or less unadulterated for several thousand years and clung onto its belief in being "chosen" is psychologically different in some way from the relatively young Germanic peoples whose culture is scarcely more than a thousand years old" & p. 154 "I am absolutely not an opponent of the Jews even though I am an opponent of Freud's...not because he is a Jew."

He also succinctly describes the overarching nature of analytical psychology which, IMHO, differentiates it from forms of therapy in general & from Freudian psychoanalysis in particular: p. 377 "the main interest of my work is not concerned with the treatment of neuroses but rather with the approach to the numinous. But the fact is that the approach to the numinous is the real therapy and inasmuch as you attain to the numinous experiences you are released from the curse of pathology. Even the very disease takes on a numinous characteristic."

Interestingly, despite his obvious erudition, Thinking orientation, & scholarship, he retains his connection to the real world (reminiscent of Buddhist mindfulness meditation & other techniques): p. 479 "Sometimes a tree tells you more than can be read in books." Clever & profound IMHO. Worth 4.5*'s

Confusion about which book this is.......2004-05-26

Amazon's presentation on this Web page is very confusing as there are two completely different books being referred to here under the title "C.G. Jung":

C.G. Jung: Letters Vol.2 1951-1961, and
C.G. Jung: Word and Image [a biography].

The ISBN number used for this Web page is 0691097240, which refers to volume 2 of Letters (1951-1961). However, when you click on the "Paperback Edition" link, it takes you to Word and Image; ISBN: 0691018472! The Book Description obviously thinks this is the Letters book, but the reviews are clearly also referring to Word and Image.

This is all especially confusing for those looking for a used version of Letters Vol.2 and who are tantalized by the lower prices for an apparent paperback version. Jung's two-volume Letters collection has never come out in paperback and the used paperback that is actually being offered is Word and Image!

It might be time for Amazon to fix this discrepancy before someone receives a different book than the one he thought he was ordering.

A Guided Tour to Carl Jung.......2000-08-10

This is a biography of Carl Jung (1875-1961), but so much more than that. It traces his life and professional development, drawing on letters and extensive quotes from the Collected Works. It is profusely illustrated, not only with photographs of Jung and the relevant people and places in his life, but also with his drawings. After Jung's break with Freud in the early 1910's, Jung went through a about a decade of professional isolation and rich personal growth. During that time, he kept a journal called the "Red Book", which he decorated with drawing and paintings based on his dreams and active imagination. Many striking images from the Red Book are reproduced in this volume: a drawing of Philemon, Jung's inner spiritual guide; the viscerally disquieting "Meeting with the Shadow"; and a singularly captivating image, "The Light at the Heart of Darkness". Photos of Jung in his travels and at his house in Bollingen round out this engaging visual tour of Jung's contribution. This is a wonderful introduction to Jung's life and work, especially for someone of an artistic inclination.

While browsing through a used book shop, I was fortunate to luck upon a copy of this, along with "Aion Volume 9," Jung's thesis of the Self's psychic totality whose historical equivalent is the figure of Christ. Although "Psychological Reflections" is far from being an exhaustive collection of Jung's work, this book is a satisfying and comprehensive anthology of quotations[thirteen hundred quotations from over one hundred works, arranged under four primary headings]reflecting Jung's spiritual and psychological insights regarding symbolism of the Self, recognition of the psyche, the archetypes, the ego, the shadow, anima/animus, and problems of self realization. Jung's work remains profound, vital, crucial, insightful and deeply moving.

"All human control comes to an end when the individual is caught in a mass movement. One Of The Experts On Lesser Known Gems!.......2002-08-10

Barbara McMartin is one of those few resident Adirondackers that has supplied the world with great information, anecdotes and history about lesser known trails in the Adirondacks. Keeping to the less over-run trails, the reader is treated to beautiful trails to remote mountaintops, caves, fire-towers, unique wetlands and historic sites.

This newer edition is only slightly different (three more hikes), but it includes great topo maps, directions, trail and destination descriptions and just a ton of interesting local folklore to keep you going. A great find.

Disappointed!.......2002-07-29

My boyfriend and I just returned from a day hike in the Adirondacks yesterday and we were so disappointed with this book for numerous reasons. First, the directions given to the actual hike were very vague and I had to spend almost two hours on the internet beforehand trying to get specific directions to the trail. Basically, what should have been a one hour drive ended up being two. Second, once we were on the hike we found this book hard to follow and distances were off. Trails that the book claimed were present were not and specifics of landmarks, bridges, streams, etc. were also absent, leaving my boyfriend and I to "guesstimate" what location the author was actually referring to. About 4 miles into the hike, we put the book in our backpack and there it stayed. Despite this we still had an enjoyable hike, however, if you are thinking of purchasing this book...take the author's advice and BRING A COMPASS since a lot of the trail directions in the book rely on N, S, E, and W. Also, be prepared to spend some time hunting for specific directions and try to hook up with someone who knows the trails since we missed the "climax" of the hike due to the book's poor directions and out of date landmarks. An updated edition of this book should be published.

You can practically feel the Adirondacks..........2000-04-29

Just browsing through the book and reading about the hikes took me right there. The details of the hikes are just amazing and although I haven't been there yet, my husband and I have dog-eared several pages of "must-hikes". Our 2 day trip to the Adirondacks has just turned into a week and a half long trip!

For the love of gawd, get the supplements!!!

There is a workbook...get it.

There are CDs...get them.

You will need (and probably be required) to get both.

Make sure they are both 7th edition.

On the + side, you will likely use this book for French 1, French 2, French 3, and French 4. (take good care of the book and materials is my suggestion).

Another note: For my French class, the CDs are loaded in the language lab's system. I did not "have" to buy them, but I find the additional practice at home helps.

C'est Magnifique!.......2007-01-07

This was a required text for my college French I and French II course. I have to say that this was an excellent book, possibly one of the best French textbooks I've ever used. The format is nice and clean, and overall everything from vocabulary, culture, and grammar was easy (and fun) to understand and follow. Even though the practice sets were inconsistant (some times they were either too easy, too hard, or just too confusing), overall Contacts is an excellent textbook for those who're beginning French learners, and for those who just want to review before going into the intermediate level. I loved this book so much that I decided to keep it instead of selling it back to my college book store. ^_^

An Excellent Guide to Introductory French.......2005-08-18

This book was used in my French 101 and 102 classes: Introductory French 1 and 2. I really liked it. Although its strength is grammar and vocabulary, it also teaches some French cultures in every chapter. You can learn listening with audio-CDs. But learning speaking is very hard if you self-study (based on my experience). I utilized the workbook and audio-tapes fully. They were very helpful tools to learn. A great collegiate introductory French book!

This is a great story of what could have, may have or may not have happened when the Queen of Sheba visited the court of King Solomon. I found the novel filled with wisdom and strength from both the female and male characters. It's a fresh and intriguing view of a world long past, with ageless truths sprinkled throughout its pages. In short, I highly recommend this book.

Interesting angle.......2006-11-05

I didn't know a lot about the story of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba so I bought this book. The story is told from an interesting angle and I enjoyed it very much. India Edghill writes great characters who hold your interest. I recommend this book to anyone who likes biblical or historical fiction.

A new favorite!.......2006-09-01

I loved the prequel, Queenmaker, and I love this even more. The writing was rich, the characters multi-faceted, the story strong and complex. Any reader and lover of history longing for different version of "herstory" should read this. (Of course, one should always start with The Red Tent, if looking for stories of the Old Testament.) I loved it so much, I had to read it again!!

Sultry & Historical - Interesting perspective.......2006-08-01

When I say that this book is sultry it is simply because it truly seems to bring to life the steamyness of love in Solomon's palace, the animosities between his many wives from various religions and cultures, and his slow-burning romance with the Queen of Sheba.

The history seems to me to be plausible and accurate, and straight off the author lets us know the exact biblical text which sparks her tale so as not to delude the reader as to what is fact and what is fiction. There are many tidbits about the unsettled living between the followers of Yahweh and those who worshipped other gods and even goddesses. I also gained a new insight into the politics of royal marriages as diplomatic manuevers.

What I found enjoyable was that the tale was at different points told from the perspectives of different characters: Solomon, the Queen of Sheba, Solomon's daughter, various of his wives, friends and leaders in the royal household. This led to an interesting play of deceptions, misunderstandings, hidden information, etc. which kept the ultimate plot twists and ending somewhat obscured from view, though not completely unpredictible. Much of this is told from the female point of view, which is refreshing in a world that was so dominated by men.

I admit that I finished this in 2 days as a summer read and didn't want to put it down. It was certainly more than worth the under $6 price I paid for it off of a bargain rack. I would recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction, and in particular religious and Christian historical fiction. Similar books I've read would include Diamant's "The Red Tent" and to a lesser extent Wangerin's "Paul."

Fantastic Read!.......2006-06-09

I've read a few books about Solomon and Sheba but this gave me a completely different view on the story - Sheba's point of view. I read this book cover to cover and only put it down once to go to bed! I fell into the pages and became part of the story and afterwards felt like I'd been on an adventure myself. Perfect for the vacation I read it on.
