With its move from hierarchical to team-based structures and its dismantling of functional barriers, the organization of the future is touted as a radical departure from traditional models. The worker of the future, we are told, must be a collaborative team player, able to give and receive help, empower others, and operate in a world of interdependence. This new worker needs relational skills and emotional intelligence--the ability to work effectively with others and understand the emotional context in which work takes place. Paradoxically, the very skills that give organizations a competitive advantage may be precisely those that prevent individual employees--especially women--from advancing.
In this book Joyce K. Fletcher presents a study of female design engineers that has profound implications for attempts to change organizational culture. Her research shows that emotional intelligence and relational behavior often "get disappeared" in practice, not because they are ineffective but because they are associated with the feminine or softer side of work. Even when they are in line with stated goals, these behaviors are viewed as inappropriate to the workplace because they collide with powerful, gender-linked images of good workers and successful organizations. Fletcher describes how this collision of gender and power "disappears" the very behavior that organizations say they need and undermines the possibility of radical change. She shows why the "female advantage" does not seem to be advantaging females or organizations. Finally, she suggests ways that individuals and organizations can make visible the invisible work--and people--critical to organizational competence and transformation.

I recommend this often. Fletcher opens our eyes (those of us that had them closed anyway) to deeply ingrained biases that unfortunately go untested in the corporate world vis-a-vis gender equality. I was only dissappointed that she implicitly seems to argue that the old male-oriented structures in the workplace be revamped to allow room for women at work, rather than offering a completely "new" model of workplace democracy more in tune with our times.
Understanding knowledge-intensive work.......1999-11-24
This book contributes to our understanding of gender and work, and this is important. But I want to draw attention to this book's more general value for anyonet concerned to understand the changing nature of work in our times.
Today, as more and more work situations involve knowledge-intensive, fluid environments where the old principles of command-and-control are ineffective, those of us connected to such environments are scrambling to understand how to achieve effective performance in a game where the only thing we know about the rules is that the old rules don't apply. In this scramble, we are continually brought back to the most fundamental question of organizing: what actions produce value; what actions are irerelevant to or destructive of value? Dr. Fletcher's book has the potential be important in helping us to act purposefully and successfully to create effective systems in this turbulant environment.
What we see as `real work' reflects only a portion of the work-related activity in organizations. For the most part, it reflects the portion that was of interest to the employers who created the industrial system of the early part of this century. As we face the challenges of knowledge-intensive work in fluid, underdetermined and rapidly changing environments, we are being forced to create another reality of work. The critical factors for working successfully simply do not lie within the area lit by the spotlight of industrial reality. But how do we take off blinders we have worn for a century to see things differently?
I can think of no better way than to challenge our thinking with explorations of what, for lack of a better term, I might call alternate realities. Dr. Fletcher's book is such an example. While it is highly informed by theory, it is a case study and illustrates its points with dozens of concrete examples. For the reader with an open mind who is prepared to be challenged, this book should stimulate a better understanding of how we might come to see the critical-but-hidden qualities that determine the success or failure of knowledge-intensive work.
More importantly, Dr. Fletcher demonstrates that what is invisible is not merely overlooked. It comes to be invisible as the result of systematic processes that `disappear' it. The lesson for us -- whether we understand it specifically in regard to gender or with reference to other factors shaping work in our time -- is that we cannot merely change organizations by `thinking outside the box' (to use a particularly unoriginal cliche for original thinking). We must first learn to SEE the box, to see the forces that sustain the box, to resist and change those forces.
At the turn of the last century, work was re-invented by employers, workers and experts on organizing, who produced a new reality of work. At the turn of the present century, this process is happening again. In this book, Dr. Fletcher makes a potentially important contribution to this immense, but necessary, task.

Ultimate success in exploiting the genetic capabilities of plants to grow in nutrient-stressed environments of the semi-arid tropics (SAT) requires a holistic view of food systems to ensure that genetic selections for improved yields on nutrient-poor soils will actually be adopted by farmers. This book sets out to address the important issue of how physiological mechanisms of nutrient uptake can best be combined with genetic options to improve the adaptation of crops to low-nutrient availability, thereby enhancing productivity of nutrient poor soils in the semi-arid tropics. The book examines (i) the sustainability of breeding for low-nutrient environments from the viewpoint of three interrelated disciplines; physiology, breeding, and socio-economics, (ii) candidate mechanisms and physiological traits to enhance uptake and utilization efficiencies, (iii) genetic approaches for manipulation of crop plants to enhance root exudation and access nutrients in the rhizosphere, and (iv) field practices and farmers' preferences for crop varieties grown in low-nutrient environments. Finally, the role of modelling in improving nutrient efficiency in cropping systems, recommendations for future research needs and strategies were highlighted. Attended by 50 international participants, this book is the outcome of the workshop held at ICRISAT-India during 27-30 September 1999 to mark the culmination of the Government of Japan/ICRISAT Project.

I've read many books by the great psychological theorists like Jung, Adler, Horney etc., but none of them cut to the heart of becoming like Fritz does. Even the other third wave analysts like Rogers and Maslow still take a more abstract approach: they suggest ideas on how to function optimally in interpesonal relationships, but don't dig very deep into the application, or the how. This book uses practices that have parallels in Zen buddhism and other sorts of experience-oriented disciplines, but doesn't praise any particular system or thinker. The presentation of the material is very simple and informal--taken from live lectures. Thus, nothing is academically obscure. Rather, its as though one is listening to a very integrated human being who is beyond the need to aggrandize himself through helping others. This is a very good book for people that wish to open themselves up to the full experience of living.

the idea of gestalt therapy is very healing and the use of it in interpersonal relationships relieves many people of hang-ups that accompany the usual expectations that causes problems in day-to-day communications.

Phenomenal, for what it covers.......2006-12-30
In response to Mr. Lynch's extraordinarily negative review, I don't believe he read more than an article or two in the whole book (which has hundreds of articles.) What one should know before buying this book is that it isn't a book per se, it's a reprint of select articles previously published in the magazine Precision Shooting between August 1982 and May 1996. These articles are printed chronologically in the book so they aren't organized by subject, which makes it a bit choppy sometimes. There is a huge amount of instruction and boatloads of data, things seemingly (unless you're into benchrest) inane such as hardness of Norma 6 PPC cases to variations in the rate of barrell twist, milimeter by milimeter. When you see these articles you'll know why Mr. Lynch's claim of no data is so far off.

This book covers the best articles from Precision Shooting magazine that are written by professional and experienced shooters from across the country. This is an excellent collaboration of articles ranging from doping the wind to neck sizes, ballistics, benchrest and highpower shooting techniques and so on and so on and so on. Like my title says this is a definite MUST for any serious shooter or those who want to get serious!

The Queenn of Clean books are always a great big help, due to that I am a caregiver for my mother and I am married with three children. This book has helped me out on many ocassions to organize my home and a lot of tips on how to keep your home organized.
A "hoarder" no more.......2007-07-23
I was raised to be a packrat. My mom's house was practically unlivable for a time and as I entered adulthood my home slowly was becoming rat's nest. Full of things that "I just might need some day" or "This item reminds me of _____, so it's a keepsake." I'm that type of hoarder who hates to throw out "Perfectly good things that can still be used" even if I'd never use them. When I actually started avoiding going home because I couldn't stand to be there I said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH but I felt so overwhelmed and didn't know where to start!
I picked up this book "The Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter" by Linda Cobb and it saved me from my hoarding. It gave me very practical advice that I could actually use. It didn't judge me "the packrat" it just said "It is what it is and here's how to fix it."
What really made it all click for me was the focusing on small areas. Take one drawer or one counter and tackle it. Once that battle has been won you feel so great that you want to continue. Little by little my entire home became clutter free. This book made me realize that I didn't need these items. That in the grand scheme of life if I didn't save every nice gift bag or old butter container, it doesn't matter one bit. And while having some items as keepsakes are nice and should be kept, my memories are in my head, not in every little thing must be saved for the memory to be cherished.
My life is so much better now that I don't hoard. I actually like my home and enjoy being there. Thanks Linda Cobb.
Very practical...gets you started right away!.......2006-01-19
I really should not be writing a review of this book yet because I have only read the intro and first two chapters! I'm really excited, though, and want to share. This book is great--and I am seeing results in my home already. The book offers practical suggestions that you can implement right away. As I have said, I just started Chapter 3, but I have already straightened my entryway and family room--the rooms covered in Chapters 1 and 2. I like the fact that you can get up during the middle of a Chapter and make a change, however small. The book is that practical. For the family room, the Queen suggested looking at the room with pen and paper in hand to see exactly what the clutter and disorganization was made up of. I did that and learned that my blankets (you know, the ones you throw over yourself when you are watching a great TV show) had no "home". I immediately followed a tip in the book and put them in a wicker hamper that I already had. Voila! Problem solved. In my entry, the kids backpacks and my purse had no home; they were never in the same place for two days in a row. I placed an old bench I had in there. Now the kids can sit when they put their shoes on and I know where their backpaks and my purse are--on that bench! Again, I am just getting started and these are small steps but they have made me feel good. I'm getting things started and making small but effective changes. I can't wait to read m o r e ! My only regret is that I bought the ebook and it seems that I am unable to print it. I wish I had a hard copy to take with me to read during those few precious moments I have to do so!
A waste of time and money.......2005-08-10
Given the glowing ratings by previous reviewers, I expected good things from this book. I kept it aside for my beach reading on our holiday - thank goodness I brought something else. This book cromprises a bunch of no-brainer solutions that my seven-year-old could easily come up with and, rather than prescribing solutions that really conquer clutter, provides tips on ways to stash it out of sight...presumably so the reader has room for more clutter.
Unusual, but highly practical, ideas for storage and more.......2003-05-19
Most books about clutter boil down to: look at what you've got, decide whether you want what you have, and figure out what to do with what remains. It is in this last category -- figure out what to do with what you keep -- that this book really shines. It contains a pile of suggestions for kitchen organization and some particularly helpful ideas about dealing with bedrooms and closets.
In addition, there is concise, but thorough coverage of how long to keep everything from condiments to tax returns. This is the longest list I have ever seen of how long foodstuffs keep in the fridge. The material is easy to read and use. Even the best organized person will find something to use in the plethora of information and ideas. We less than well organized folks will find a lot of advice that we will be able to put to use right now, and encouragement to do it. A great buy.

i would recomend this bok because it expresses true feelings about everything that happens in life.it kind of gives you an ideal picture in your head about what they are talking about.you can feel their soul deep inside cause you read some of the words and you can feel what they are expressing to you.It is mainly about life experiences with anything for instance:life of course,love,family,friends,school,basically anything that happens in life that you know you can express on a piece of paper.

This first semester I've been reading the Chicken Soup books during SSR time. One I enjoyed reading the most was the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul IV, a nonfiction book. There are a few authors who submit their stories and they are all true. The authors who put the book together though are Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Kimberley Kirberger, and Mitch Claspy. The book is full of true stories different people go through and deal with. They're either about friendship, making a difference, relationships, lessons and learning, family, tough stuff, overcoming obstacles, and growing up. My favorites are the ones about friendships and relationships. The main themes of what I read were friendship, love, and taking things for granted. Those are things everyone does at one point in there life.
Certain friendship stories really stuck out to me and made me think about, and realize some stuff. One of them was called "Andy". Two best friends since 5th grade were hanging out and the next thing Scott knew, Andy was dead. Shot right in the head. They said it was a freak accident. That short story right there made me realize how lucky I am to still have my best friend around in such a messed up world. Makes me very appreciative and taught me to never take any of the time I get to spend with her for granted, but to only cherish it.
Another short story I really liked reading was from the Relationship section called "Not Forgotten". It's about a "perfect high school couple in love" and how love is possible in High School. Even if we are just "young kids", love is possible at any age and at anytime in someone's life.
So, in conclusion I really enjoyed the SSR time we had in the beginning of class. It was a good time and I got to learn a lot of things from my readings. I think now, Chicken Soup books are among the very few books I actually like to read without having to and I'm going to read the entire series. I think the reason I like these books more than most is, because I can relate the problems to my every day life and it was very easy to read. Some of the stories are things that I have or probably will go through sometime in my lifetime. The book kept me interested and I never got bored one time while reading it.
A Good Book for teens, but why such a long wait from the third one?.......2005-09-25
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul books are usually inspirational. Teenagers can relate to their stories in ways unimaginable. It's a great book for teens to read so that they know that they're normal. It was why I read them when I was younger and why some stories still hold true today.
It's great to pick up the fourth one. More stories on love, relationships, friendships, family, and on the occasion, tough stuff.
What I'm disappointed with is why it took so long to get the fourth one out. It was a four year wait! I loved the first three books, I could relate to them at the time of reading them. Four years ago I was fourteen going on fifteen, those are some of the years where every teen really should read these books (it's the time of drama and the all time famous threat for suicide). A teenager needs a book to let him/her know their life isn't all that bad, and that what happens to them really does happen to everyone else.
The stories in this one, for those who were like me and read them as they came out, have no bearing anymore. For older teenagers around seventeen to nineteen years old, like myself, the stories aren't nearly as inspirational as they could be anymore. Part of it really IS due to it's late release. Those of us who enjoyed the first three when they came out... have grown up! Although, a part of me still yearns for teen stories because I went and picked this up, but I don't want to read a story and say to myself, "Been there done that." I want to read a story and say, "I can relate." That's lost in this compilation, and perhaps it's because I'm eighteen as opposed to fourteen.
In short, the stories ARE good, but the older teen doesn't gain or learn from them. As an older teen you probably already know. I did enjoy the stories, though, for the sheer fact that I know the people who wrote them probably learned. However, I can't help but express my disappointment that they lost the ability to touch me in the way they used to.
For the younger teens this is gold found at the end of the rainbow. Take it home and enjoy it. For the teens who have been there since the beginning, the stories are gold, but not life changing anymore. Either way, I recommend picking this up. Each story is charming in it's own way.
No matter what, you'll find a story that touches your heart.......2005-06-19
This book contains a bunch of short stories about teenagers lives. It's both inspirational and creative. It really feels personal, because it's written by people like you!
I would definitely read this book, because, no matter what, you're sure to find a story that you'll love, or that has a special meaning for you.
Worse than the rest.......2005-03-20
if you have the three previous books, i don't recommend this one. for me many stories were just boring, and those that weren't were not worth the money. sorry, i love the rest of the series though.
