Book Description

Has globalization the phenomenon outgrown "globalization" the concept? In Distant Proximities, one of America's senior scholars presents a work of sweeping vision that addresses the dizzying anxieties of the post-Cold War, post-September 11 world. Culminating the influential reassessment of international relations he began in 1990 with Turbulence in World Politics, James Rosenau here undertakes the first systematic analysis of just how complex these profound global changes have become. Among his many conceptual innovations, he treats people-in-the-street as well as activists and elites as central players in what we call "globalization."

Deftly weaving striking insights into arresting prose, Rosenau traces the links and interactions between people at the individual level and institutions such as states, nongovernmental organizations, and transnational corporations at the collective level. In doing so he masterfully conveys how the emerging new reality has unfolded as events abroad increasingly pervade the routines of life at home and become, in effect, distant proximities.

Rosenau begins by distinguishing among various local, global, and private "worlds" in terms of their inhabitants' orientations toward developments elsewhere. He then proceeds to cogently analyze how the residents of these worlds shape and are shaped by the diverse collectivities that crowd the global stage and that sustain such issues as human rights, corruption, the global economy, and global governance.

Throughout this richly imaginative, fluidly written book, Rosenau examines how anti-globalization protests and the terrorist attacks on America amount to quintessential distant proximities. His book is thus a pathbreaking inquiry into the dynamics that lie beyond globalization, one that all thoughtful observers of the world scene will find penetrating and provocative.

5 out of 5 stars Peoples and Proximities.......2003-08-26

Its rare to find a book of this caliber. Not only does it thoroughly analyze the politics of the future, but it also offers a typology of how individuals assess and confront political change in their world.

Fragmegration, the tension between integration and fragmentation in the world order, plays a central role in the book, constantly weaving its way through the various analyses.

The last section of the book, concerns information politics, the skill revolution, and how today's economic and technological changes are affecting politics and those who must contend with the uncertainties in the evolving political "mobius web."

        Book Description

More than 20 years after the ban of DDT and other organochlorine pesticides, pesticides continue to be detected in air, rain, soil, surface water, bed sediment, and aquatic and terrestrial biota throughout the world. Recent research suggests that low levels of some of these pesticides may have the potential to affect the development, reproduction, and behavior of fish and wildlife, and possibly humans. Pesticides in Stream Sediment and Aquatic Biota: Distribution, Trends, and Governing Factors assesses the occurrence and behavior of pesticides in bed sediment and aquatic biota-the two major compartments of the hydrologic system where organochlorine pesticides are most likely to accumulate. This book collects, for the first time, results from several hundred monitoring studies and field experiments, ranging in scope from individual sites to the entire nation. Comprehensive tables provide concise summaries of study locations, pesticides analyzed, and study outcomes. Comprehensive and extensively illustrated, Pesticides in Stream Sediment and Aquatic Biota: Distribution, Trends, and Governing Factors evaluates the sources, environmental fate, geographic distribution, and long-term trends of pesticides in bed sediment and aquatic biota. The book focuses on organochlorine pesticides, but also assesses the potential for currently used pesticides to be found in bed sediment and aquatic biota. Topics covered in depth include the effect of land use on pesticide occurrence, mechanisms of pesticide uptake and accumulation by aquatic biota, and the environmental significance of observed levels of pesticides in stream sediment and aquatic biota.

              Book Description

Written by one of the worldÂ's foremost authorities on martial arts and weaponcraft, Master of the Blade is an instructional manual on the realistic use of the knife in self-defense. Based on the Tactical Edged Weapons System of Richard RyanÂ's Dynamic Combat Method, it offers priceless insights into a world shrouded in mystery, hype and mystique, and dispels common myths about knife fighting. Ryan covers the various types of blades and how to choose one thatÂ's right for you; knife fighting stances, grips, targets, striking patterns and types of cuts; the basics of defense and counterattack; blade tactics and strategies against different types of weapons and attackers; deadly mistakes such as overcommitment and hesitation; dealing with fear and the importance of mind-set; carry methods and tactical concealment; and realistic training methods. Master of the Blade explores the deadly art of knife fighting in a refreshing and often humorous manner, presenting the stark realities of knife fighting in a way we can all understand and digest. The old adage “donÂ't bring a knife to a gunfight” wonÂ't have the same meaning for you once youÂ've read this book. For academic study only.

5 out of 5 stars Master Of The Blade: Secrets Of The Deadly Art Of Knife Fighting.......2007-01-22

Richard Ryan's Master Of The Blade pulls no punches on the reality of bladed combat. It paints a very accurate picture of the often underestimated use of bladed weapons. I would strongly recommend it to anyone, weather they carried a blade or realized that any of us could face one in a life and death struggle. I hope Mr. Ryan will have more material on the market in the future.

              1 out of 5 stars Play Nice.......2006-08-10

To be honest, this book wasn't all that great. The author spent more time explaining how his "dynamic" method was better than everyone else's instead of actually teaching the art of blade wielding & fighting. There was even space for a comic strip of some fat, cross eyed martial arts master rejecting a sparring session with the author out of fear. Now Mr. Ryan, play nice or I'll put you in the garage-sale bin.

3 out of 5 stars Duel Fighting At Its Best?.......2005-08-11

This book is about fighting a "duel" with the knife. Duel fighting is more of a phenomenon of two individuals "willing to fight" ... vs. a true self defense situation. Ryan claims that the worst case scenario for a a person with a knife to face is to square off with another person also skilled with the blade. This is true for "duel fighting". The worst case scenario in the streets is when you are attacked by an assailant, and you are unaware that he is attacking you with a knife.

IF you research the "reality" of knife violence, most victims are not even aware that they are "being stabbed" until after the fact. As far as they are concerned, they are being punched or grabbed, and they are reacting accordingly.

Any system of knife defense that assumes the following is a system that is based on consenting violence, the duel. It does not adequately address reality based self defense, and focuses most of the science on the wrong thing, or at best "the least probable" scenario UNLESS your goal is to get into knife fights.

FIVE CRITICAL and UNREALISTIC ASSUMPTIONS MADE IN THE BOOK
              1. You are aware that your opponent has a knife
              2. Your knife will already be drawn and ready for action
              3. If your knife is NOT drawn and ready for action, then you will have time (translation: LUXURY) to deploy your knife and therefore follow the techniques of the book.
              4. Unarmed combatives don't need to be integrated in strategies regarding knife fighting / defense, and therefore are not needed as part of this manual.
              5. Assuming "integrated" unarmed combatives are addressed (which they aren't in the book), getting your folder blade out under stress is not a difficult thing to do (it is a fine motor skill and as we know we lose those skills when our body experiences fear and the a-dump ... need to consider this as part of training)

              2 out of 5 stars What Drivel!.......2005-06-14

After reading four books on knife fighting, I'm beginning to realize there's not much more to be said, especially when Richard Ryan is saying it. "Pathetic" he calls man. A "walking sack of meat." No built-in mechanisms for defense, obviously not a predator by nature. Man had to "claw his way up" the foodchain.

              Is this guy for real?

If you begin with a false premise, you can only get better and there are some relevant material in the book--if you can get past Ryan's flaming ego, which doesn't take long to become a smoldering ember.

But with all the useful information which, by the way, you can get elsewhere in far more entertaining ways, Ryan rapidly becomes tedious to read. The truth is, man has always been the most dangerous creature roaming this planet. Even cave deptictions show groups of armed men taking down creatures much larger and faster than themselves. And did anyone notice that most of early man wore fur and leather footwear.

It wasn't only weapons that made man dangerous, it was his resourcefulness and, did anyone say fire? Given to mortal man by the immortal Prometheus, it made man almost as powerful as the gods. Soon Greeks were putting sticks into the ground and mathematically figuring out the circumference of the globe. Then Persians, Greeks and Romans were making war using horses and elephants, and bronze and leather weapons, marching in formation and boldly claiming dominance over the land. Pathetic? "Walking sacks of meat?" Oh, and let's not forget in God's image.

The bottom line in knife fighting is, if someone wants to kill you with a knife, he probably will if he's smart enough and committed enough. Very few people are "called out" for knife fighting -- dirks have always been an assasin's tool, nearly everyone's last choice for going at it in the so-called "circle of death" in a fair fight.

When you can see the bad guy coming. When you see the predator's gleam in his eyes, then a knife can come in very handy. Tick someone off in a bar and a blade's likely to end up in your ribs before you can try all that macho knife stuff you learned.

A fellow I once knew pulled out a giant fold-out knife and laid it on the table so I could get a good look at it. Then he told me about two guys who were following him one night in a bad section of D.C. He turned and faced them, pulling out the knife and letting them see its glittering blade before he palmed it.

"Yeah, well what would you have done if they'd pulled out knives of their own and come after you?" He shrugged and replied, "I would have shot them."

5 out of 5 stars One of the, if not the best books on the subject.......2005-04-20

Over the years I've collected many books on knife fighting and self-defense, and this book is by far the best one on the use of the blade for self-defense. Many of the reviewers have already covered some of the topics so I'll just say that one of the reasons I like the book so much is because the methods he advocataes really work. Many years ago before I started training under the author, I got his book and knife sparred with a friend, and his stance saved me from getting stabbed several times. Despite Ryan's obvious ego in the book, sure many people might look down on that, but when you learn how much knowledge and skill this man has, I think he deserves to have an ego. As long as the person is preaching reality why not?

As for reality, and the purely dueling aspect as one reviewer points out, it is not the only aspect of the art. It is just the tip of the iceberg; you can't possibly cover everything in a book, and because of this the methods for both fighting armed with a knife, and against one unarmed, are not covered in the book, but are taught, within all ranges and scenarios.

Another comment I found interesting was when one reviewer said about Ryan calling man pathetic, and a sack of meat, which is in actuality the truth. What Ryan was refering to was the fact that we humans do not have sharp claws to protect ourselves, or a rough hide, or shells, like many other animals, but we evolved a big brain with lots of intelligence, which we put to good use by developing tools and fighting our way up to the top of the food chain, which is what he said.

In my opinion, and I thought this long before becoming a student, this book is the most realistic one on the market today. Buy other books on knife fighting, and read, and learn the methods advocated, and try out each authors' techniques, and I'm sure you'll come to the same conclusion I did many years ago, that Ryan's are some of the best, if not the best.

This is an essential book on storytelling. It helps the novice with useful tips. The more experienced storyteller will still find interesting material in the selection of rich tales from different cultures. It is also a great book to read aloud for the children.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those venturing into storytelling.......2000-07-25

Margaret Read MacDonald has another winner in this book that is guaranteed to help the novice get up in front of a group--without book or script--and share the gift known as story. She takes the reader through the process of finding, learning and practicing a story. She shares a little background on the importance of story in history and world cultures. Best of all, she includes stories with telling instructions. Unlike many other books of this type, the stories she includes are not the well-known "beginner's stories," like "The Turnip," but interesting and fun to tell, ones you may never have heard before.

Turn off your television and open up whole new worlds by telling a story to your friends, family, students, co-workers. You will enjoy the power of a story shared with your listeners, and "The Storyteller's Start-Up" will be an excellent guide for the journey.

(Gwyn is a professional storyteller who has coached many middle school students in the telling of their first story).

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction into the world of storytelling........2000-07-11

Going into the teaching field, I was looking for some tips on telling stories. I found it in MacDonald's book. She gives techniques for learning and performing stories. She also gives ideas for incorporating storytelling into the classroom.

Each chapter is followed with a valuable list of books and authors for you to expand on the art of storytelling.

MacDonald's book is a great introduction into the world and tradition of storytelling. She even includes twelve tales to get you going. If you want to become a storyteller, this is a good place to start your quest.

She tells her best friend, Michael, about the weekend masquerade party that she has been invited to attend. They have heard the tales of their boss's annual wild sex bash and Hailey has decided to let her inhibitions go by the wayside and go after what she wants. She wheedles Michael into finding out what costume her boss will wear little knowing that Michael has been in love with her for the past year and just may attend the party himself. Hailey is in for a little surprise as well as the weekend of her life. Jennifer Probst has chosen the perfect setting for this short erotic tale of sexual fantasy. What better way to lose your inhibitions than at a MASQUERADE party when everyone is in costume and concealed!

              ANCIENT PLEASURES by Jess Michaels

In Egypt, 1897, Isabella Winslow and her entourage find the tomb that her late husband discovered and to their surprise, they find the tomb open and two treasure hunters inside. Jake Turner and his partner have been inside checking out the lost treasure as well as the stability of the tomb. When the stones start shaking and falling around them, Jake saves Isabella but in the process, they are separated from the rest of the party. Hearing sexual moans from another room, they discover a string of sexual paintings on the wall as well as Isabella's maid being pleasured by two men. Isabella finds herself hungry for the handsome Jake. Could the ancient pleasure tomb cause them to partake of any and all sexual rapture and satisfaction?

              MANHUNT by Kimberly Dean

He caught her as she was coming out of the shower, the handsome police officer that used to be her friend before he became a dope peddler. Taryn is an assistant district attorney hating all dope dealers and especially Michael Tucker whom she believed to be innocent until she saw all of the evidence against him. Now he has escaped from jail and is determined to prove his innocence with Taryn's help. The attraction is as strong as ever and in-between lovemaking and more lovemaking, they go through her files and come up with a way to prove his innocence.

              WAKE ME by Angela Knight

Chloe is enthralled with the handsome knight depicted in the painting even though she has no idea who sent it to her or where it came from. All she knows is that the huge knight is a welcome diversion after the desertion of her long time boyfriend and that night, she dreamed erotic dreams about the knight Radolf. Night after night more dreams followed giving her the most fantastic sexual experiences of her life and they always followed by Radolf saying "Wake me". The painting was truly magical and the handsome knight was in need of rescuing by a woman who truly loved him.

If you enjoy erotica, you are sure to enjoy the four stories in SECRETS, VOLUME 11. They are filled with a lot of imagination and sexually arousing content. After reading these highly lusty stories, a cold shower is in order as they are well written and will satisfy most sexual fantasies. MANHUNT is the most realistic of the four novellas and all are sexually explicit. The SECRETS books published by Red Sage Publishing are well known for their excellent writing and highly erotic stories and SECRETS VOLUME 11 will not disappoint.

              5 out of 5 stars 11 Speaks Volumes.......2005-05-18

After a quality dip in Volume 10, Volume 11 is back on track, although I had my initial concerns. It kept my fingers busy... turning pages, of course!

              Masquerade by Jennifer Probst
Hailey, the main character wants to get layed by a man she never met, the boss of an international software company.
Advice: Skip the first 12 or 15 pages and get right to the hea(r)t of the matter. My main complaint is a common failing: Why write a pretense of a European setting if everyone and everything looks, smells, and sounds American generic? With all the great French, Italian, and Scandanavian singers, why is everyone in Italy listening to American schmaltz? Why specify a software company (obviously not the author's long suit) when Europe is hardly known for software? Why does the main character fail to catch on that a supposedly sophisticated European speaks with American colloquialisms? It's not European and the setting may as well be Lake Como in Minnesota instead of Europe's largest lake. I know this rant is about meaningless stage dressing for a fantasy, but it annoys me, and perhaps it's unfairly apparent because two other authors in the volume do foreign settings well.
The heroine was hard to take at first. She is a severely sexually conflicted woman so ditzy she seems less likely to consumate an anonymous international love affair than end up as a corpse by the side of the road.
However, along about the 18th page, the story takes off. The masquerade's Phantom (a colleague who has fallen in love with her, impressed by her sympathy during his marriage collapse and willing to overlook her serious religious hangups), turns her toward a couple on a stairway where the man is stroking the bare privates of a woman. The Phantom tells her she is to be as open with him as the woman's legs. At last the author is in her element, and she's a mistress of it. She is not at all afraid of graphic description. The sexual submissivess of the main character was delicious. Unlike some characters we've seen, she's not afraid to pleasure a man, and find pleasure in being actively oral. Ahh.
From there on out, I leaned back, [...] The trappings of the story deserve about 2 stars, but the sex gets a full 6.

              Ancient Pleasures by Jess Michaels
Wow. I made the mistake of flipping through this part of the book at Borders, when I suddenly found myself aroused. I paid and ran home. I read it quickly and later on I read it more slowly to my husband. He also found this story 'uplifting'.
The trick of seduction is to get characters to suspend inhibitions, and the author does it quickly and cleverly. Within 5 pages or so, her characters get to it, and without food, water (except for a dip), or a bathroom break, they continue right up to the end. The range of 'festivities' is also broad, so varied amazon might not let me list them. I did wonder how the inexperienced heroine had [...], but no big deal. Isabella is not a passive character, but actively works up not only her own pleasure, but that of Jake as well. She is not afraid to touch herself or touch him, and both are deliciously oral.
My other compliment is that when Jess Michaels depicts foreigners she rarely makes the mistake of making them sound American. Her scene is obviously a fragment of imagination, but she does it well, giving it a 'real' feel.
The story is superbly explicit and the sex deserves more than the 5 star limit.

              Manhunt by Kimberly Dean
Unlike the other stories which are set in imaginative time or space, Manhunt could have taken place next door with a male character good enough to eat. Also different is that it feels nearly book length and even includes an epilog. Finally, you should read Secrets volume 9 FIRST.
You just know that any book that book starts with a guy catching a wet, naked woman is promising. Fortunately, the author keeps her promise.
The premise is both crazy enough and good enough for a TV movie: An innocent man seizes the prosecutor, Taryn (I love that name!) who convicted him, and wants her to prove his innocence. Fortunately for us one-handed readers, he may not have been guilty of the crime, but he's not innocent at all.
The story really plays to those of us with captive fantasies. Oooo. I want to read this one to my husband.

              Wake Me by Angela Knight
Whew! Wet dreams for women! This story is a twist on the fairy tale princess kissing the frog. It also is a story about a picture, a picture of a knight given a woman who begins to encounter him in her sleep, a knight who whispers 'wake me'. The knight, Randolf, it turns out, is held captive by a kind of witch in the frame and awaits release, but he doesn't wait passively. He and his 'victim' jump through time and space in all the romance novel settings imaginable, including a literal bodice-ripping.
The story gets right what other authors sometimes get wrong: she makes you 'feel' you really are in a castle, a pirate ship, or an Old West setting. It is light and self-mocking. It pokes fun at political correctness, romance writing, and even our lust for submissive pleasure. However, the sex is explicit, just the way we love it. I found myself wanting to see the author do a good 'blistering' scene, but the bondage is pretty damn fine.
Should an 'average' man happen to pick up this story, he is likely to feel inadequate. The author is obviously a believer in 'bigger is better', at least in men and Chloe's first 'taste' of him will fulfill your oral fantasies. (The story initially suggests she doesn't like oral sex which left me wondering if that might have been the unspoken reason her relationship with Chris bombed, but suddenly she loves it with the blond Viking.)
Although this didn't seem as sexual as the other stories, it is the best written. It's not as long as the others, but it has the most depth. It gave good balance and was a lovely ending to the book. Gimme, gimme... but don't wake me!
To turn a phrase around, a thousand words are worth a picture. At about 10 cents per thousand word picture, this story and this volume 11 of Secrets is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Angela Knight is my new best friend.......2005-03-18

Angela Knight continues to raise the bar in the erotic fiction genre. Her story, "Wake Me" is worth the cover price alone. Fortunately, Ms. Knight brought some terrific writers along this go-round. It's obvious the "Secrets" series is undergoing some overdue renovations, and I'm happy to report that they're off to a running start.

Buy this volume--you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Four Amazing Reads By Some Of Today's Hottest Authors!.......2005-01-17

This is a wonderfully sensual anthology that readers will manage to inhale once they get their hands on a copy of this book. Some of todays hottest and brightest stars of erotic fiction have contributed to this book and as a result the reader will we treated to a feast for the senses that will captivate and transport the reader to whatever make-believe world these authors have created. There is not one dud found within these pages. All four stories are good in their own right and there is a little something for everyone.

Jennifer Probst story "Masquerade" is the story of one woman finally letting go and allowing herself to feel for the first time ever. What she doesn't know is that the one person her very best friend is going to be the one that will bring her out of her shell. Will she allow herself to have a happy ending?

Jess Michaels "Ancient Pleasures" is a story about a widow who has traveled a great distance to see what had so captivated her late husband. When she finds herself trapped in an ancient tomb with an American tomb raider she will find that her journey was not about what she thought it would be.

Kimberly Dean's "Manhunt" is the story of one good cop that has been framed for murder and the ADA that should have had more faith in him but instead managed to get him convicted. When Michael escapes he goes to the one person he knows can help him. The lady that put him in jail to begin with. Can he convince Taryn that he is innocent and still keep his hands off?

Angela Knight's "Wake Me" takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of times, genre's and hero's that will have the reader glued to the pages. Chloe has had her heart broken. She is given the mysterious gift of a painting that has a handsome knight in repose sleeping. She decides to hang her handsome knight above her bed and once she does she experiences the most erotic dreams highlighting some of her deepest fantasies that she's read in her historical romances. But is it really a dream or is her knight a true flesh and blood man that needs help in order to love her for the rest of her life?

Red Sage's "Secrets" anthologies always offer top drawer reads and this volume is no different. I highly recommend this book if you not only like your reads spicy, but like a well fleshed out story as well.

No secret this reviewer is big fan of the annual erotic romances. The eleventh edition contains four hot tales starring wonderful protagonists and plenty of romance.
