Book Description
An understanding of risk and how to deal with it is an essential part of modern economics. Whether liability litigation for pharmaceutical firms or an individual's having insufficient wealth to retire, risk is something that can be recognized, quantified, analyzed, treated--and incorporated into our decision-making processes. This book represents a concise summary of basic multiperiod decision-making under risk. Its detailed coverage of a broad range of topics is ideally suited for use in advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate courses either as a self-contained text, or the introductory chapters combined with a selection of later chapters can represent core reading in courses on macroeconomics, insurance, portfolio choice, or asset pricing.
The authors start with the fundamentals of risk measurement and risk aversion. They then apply these concepts to insurance decisions and portfolio choice in a one-period model. After examining these decisions in their one-period setting, they devote most of the book to a multiperiod context, which adds the long-term perspective most risk management analyses require. Each chapter concludes with a discussion of the relevant literature and a set of problems.
The book presents a thoroughly accessible introduction to risk, bridging the gap between the traditionally separate economics and finance literatures.

Numerical Methods in Finance and Economics: A MATLAB-Based Introduction (Statistics in Practice)
ASIN: 0792382609 |
Book Description
This book is devoted to investment decision-making under uncertainty. The book covers three basic approaches to this process: The stochastic dominance approach; the mean-variance approach; and the non-expected utility approach, focusing on prospect theory and its modified version, cumulative prospect theory. These approaches are discussed and compared in this book. In addition, this volume examines cases in which stochastic dominance rules coincide with the mean-variance rule and cases in which contradictions between these two approaches may occur. It then discusses the relationship between stochastic dominance rules and prospect theory, and establishes a new investment decision rule which combines the two and which we call prospect stochastic dominance. Although all three approaches are discussed, most of the book is devoted to the stochastic dominance paradigm. This book is intended for Ph.D students, advanced MBA students specializing in finance, and advanced MA economics students interested in the economics of uncertainty. The book can be used as a supplementary book in post-graduate courses on portfolio selection and investment decision-making under uncertainty.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent & expedient service.......2006-07-13
The textbook was brand new and was wrapped in cellophane. Class began the following week, and the book arrived that week-end which gave me enough time to complete assignments in a timely fashion.
Great Resource.......2005-10-10
I used this book in my MBA program. This is a very good resource. It is researched based with many articles that are relatively short and to the point.
A excellent collection of the classic readings........2000-12-24
The editors of the book have included in a single volume the classics. The articles include those authored by Kurt Lewin, Chris Argyris, Edgar Schein, Gareth Jones, C.K. Prahalad & Jeffrey Pfeffer besides many others. The latest edition published in 2000 include 16 new readings. Useful resource material for students of organisational behaviour and organisational change. The strategies described in some of the readings could be usefully applied in a variety of work settings. HR practioners and those in human resources development will find some of the articles valuable in crafting policies and renewal of training strategies. To sum it, in the words of the editors, "The field of organisation development is fun and exciting. We hope this anthology will convey some of that sense of excitement." I have discovered that sense of excitement when I read the articles in the book. I will continue to refer to them from time to time.

Book Description
This publication is based on the plant processes and reaction sites for which reliable knowledge on both their physiology and biochem-istry and the mode of herbicidal action is available. Targets of the agrochemical research, such as enzymes of biosynthetic pathways or herbicide-binding peptides in the photosynthetic membrane, are highlighted. Detailed knowledge about the target sites will allow bio-chemical model systems to evaluate the biological activity of newly synthesized compounds before their conventional screening in the greenhouse. Quantitative structure/activity relationships should be performed more reliably with simple biological species or enzymol-ogy assays, to aid in the rational design of pesticides. This text is highly valuable for plant physiologists, pathologists, and chemists in the agrochemical industry and universities.
Book Description
What can a therapist do when faced with the all?too?familiar client who seems "stuck" or "resistant". With this captivating volume, veteran therapists Carol and Steve Lankton offer clinicians a highly effective tool with which they can expand their ability to be successful in therapy through integrating the use of indirection into the more commonly used rational and direct approach. This is a book of predesigned stories that the Lanktons and their trainees have told in successful therapy in order to assist clients in their movement toward specific, preplanned goals. The stories are categorized according to the way they are structured to reach particular types of goals, such as changes in affect, attitudinal restructuring, changes in behavior, changes in family structure, changes in self?image, and many others.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic collection of therapeutic metaphors.......2002-11-05
Metaphors are powerful vehicles for change; the unconscious mind must associate with elements of the story to understand it. Milton H. Erickson, M.D., arguably the greatest hypnotherapist ever, often utilized metaphors to achieve breakthroughs with his patients. Now 100 Ericksonian metaphors are available for you to use with patients thanks to the Lanktons' Tales of Enchantment. Each metaphorical story in this treasure trove is preceded with information regarding what the story teaches, problems addressed, and the target audience. I highly recommend this collection of therapeutic metaphors for any Ericksonian hypnotherapist or individual who wishes to read stories that will effectuate positive changes in his or her life.
A positive resource for profesionals and non-profesionals.......1998-08-11
This book is oriented principally to people thet work in the mental health area, giving very valuable resources for cariing out therapeutic conversations, and reading it adds a great deal to creativity. But on the other hand, it doesn't have a good review of how to construct metaphors, it presents many ready-made metaphors.
Also it's a good book for anybody that's seeking a positive view in life or in a specific problematic stage of life. It gives a chance to change the glasses you are using to look at the world for a pair that might make you feel better.

Book Description
An environmental assessor has to consider hazards and their associated risks to exposed persons and to all environmental media. This requires an appreciation of the hazard's effects, coupled with an ability to integrate this information with data on occupational exposure and adverse effects to air, soil and water. Once it is established that a substance may be toxic, that hazard then needs to be integrated with a measurement or a personal and professional observation to provide a risk assessment. Having achieved such an assessment, the risk then needs to be subjected to management techniques so as to reduce that risk in the most pragmatic manner for the system under consideration.; Measurement, or at least a qualitative assessment of the extent of the toxic insult caused by the substance or mixture of substances involved, is of importance when undertaking an environmental toxicology assessment. This text outlines some of the measurement techniques that have been developed during the early 1990s and provides examples of their application and use. Properly conducted animal experiments, coupled with generic measurements and epidemiological studies, provide a basis for establishing links between human health risks and environmental factors: from such associations public health and environmental policies can be progressed in both developed and underdeveloped countries so as to minimize the risks to current and future populations.

It's a good book if you already know how to tie flies but if you don't buy another book that teaches you the basics. All they give hear are recipes. Alot of good flies here that work.
Book Description
The author's second book is a hands-on book on how to install a solar electrical system. It covers, every aspect of a solar installation in great detail, including: electrical theory with emphasis on DC wiring, system design, electrical code, as well as components of a solar system down to quirks, nuts, and bolts. In its humorous language the book also looks at alternative energy politics, policies, and the industry through a critical eye.
Customer Reviews:
Great Solar Guide.......2007-01-06
This book is great. It covers the bases and gives the information one needs. It's a core book for this subject.
Seriously flawed.......2006-09-27
Pieper has a lot of practical knowledge but some things he writes are plain wrong. On page 17 he writes: "The frequency of the sine wave is measured as Hz per second" (should be cycles per second which is Hz). On page 18 he says: "the sine wave [is] 220 volts between two peaks" (should be 311 v; 220 is the RMS voltage). On page 23 he says: "amp hours [are] also refered to as amps per hour or amp/hours" (not true). In page 27 he writes: "At some point, the resistance gets so high that it creates heat inside the conductor" (there is always resistance and heat, the problem is the temperature rises too high). He also is convinced the minerals in petroleum jelly help conductivity on the battery terminals (pp. 123&159) and says "search current" when he means "surge current" (pp. 120&125). Whole pages are such confusing technical nonsense that it is impossible to to give a short account. He self published - he should have had a technically competent person help him with theory and a good how-to book editor help with the practical stuff. I'm sure he is a very competent electrician and there is some good practical information in the book, but it is nowhere near as advertised.
The Easy Guide To Solar Electric Part 2.......2006-05-24
I found this book at the public library in my search for a good guide to solar electric systems. I found a small amount of the information useful but, most was a waste of my time. The writer does not explain ideas in a very coherent manner. He uses a great deal of book space attempting to be funny and expressing his political views. If you are interested in a good solar electric book this is not it. I am still looking.
Finally a solar book I like.......2005-11-27
Reading both of Adi Pieper's books on solar I was pleasantly surprised. Being an analyst in the aviation industry, I come across many very boring and conformistic writings. This book is like a fresh breeze. You cannot describe the alternative form of energy generation without critically viewing the conventional forms available. Readers who do not understand this are sad examples of the energy problem we are presently facing. Compared to several other solar books available this book is inspiring, informative, technically precise (although their are two small mistakes with his math), and has helped me install my own solar system. I also reviewed two other books (refusing to name these, which is a cheap shot under the belt) which are boring and very confusing.
Thinly Disguised Demagoguery.......2005-09-21
By title, this book claims to be a "how to" guide. The first section, however, belies this by explaining that you should leave it to professionals. Having thus disposed of the technical aspects, the author fills the remainder of the product with self-righteous, ultra-greenie, anti-capitalist claptrap, unsupported by fact or even verifiable cites. Not even well written propaganda, and most certainly not useful to anyone wishing to learn anything useful about installing a PV system.
Book Description
What do the enigmatic images on ancient Egyptian artifacts mean? What royal names adorn the walls of some of the world's oldest temples? What kind of lives did the people buried in the ancient tombs lead? The keys to unlock this fascinating civilization lie within the glyphs of their sacred language. Appearing a little before 3,000 B.C., Egyptian hieroglyphs were used for thousands of years to write names, label commodities, commemorate historical events, and convey complex stories.
This definitive educational tool provides a systematic, step-by-step approach to learning ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, complete with fun and increasingly challenging exercises and easy-to-reference sign and word lists. By the end of chapter one, readers will begin to decipher simple inscriptions; after completing the entire book, readers will be ready to tackle tomb and temple walls. While learning to decipher the language of the ancient Egyptians, readers will also learn about their history, social structure, and funerary beliefs. An invaluable resource, this book will appeal to amateur Egyptologists, as well as those looking to enhance their museum-going and travel experiences. AUTHOR BIO: Janice Kamrin holds a Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Pennsylvania, and she has taught, written, and lectured widely on the subject of ancient Egypt. She currently works with Zahi Hawass, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, on many of his publications.
Customer Reviews:
My first hieroglyphic book.......2007-10-10
I have just received this book. It is very well written. I read books about Egypt, but none dedicated entirely to hieroglyphs . After the first two chapters when I read some names (which I did not see before!) in the exercises area , I felt like a little Champollion . I like logic and this book makes possible to learn basic things in minutes!
Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A practical guide.......2007-03-08
I think it is a very good book above all for beginners. If you are interested of learning about hieroglyphs and you know nothing at all about them this book is a good way to start learning. It is clear, interesting and funny indeed.
Not for beginners.......2006-07-31
I have been studying Egyptian Hieroglyphs for five years utilizing all the teach-yourself-hieroglyph books I could find. I am very glad this was not the first hieroglyph book I picked up. Although it is a handsome, well laid out volume with color graphics, in depth explanations and lessons, it is filled with mistakes. Finding these mistakes is a fun exercise for someone who has previous knowledge of the subject but could be very confusing for the true beginner. The answer key is designed well, giving transliterations and translations but there are several instances where whole phrases are left un-translated. My favorite mistake is one of the hieroglyphic phrases in the lessons that when translated says, "your excellent husband." Ms. Kamrin needs to brush up on her masculine and feminine forms of suffix pronouns. She used the words hy.k ikr instead of hy.t ikr which means the phrase is being directed to a man. As the gang on Seinfeld used to say, "Not that there's anything wrong with that," but it could be confusing when learning the difference between the masculine and feminine forms of the word "your."
If you are a beginner and serious about studying hieroglyphs, I would suggest starting with these books: Egyptian Hieroglyphs: How to Read and Write Them by Stephane Rossini; Decoding Egyptian Hieroglyphs: How to Read the Secret Language of the Pharaohs by Bridget McDermott; and then How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Step-By-Step Guide to Teach Yourself by Mark Collier and Bill Manly.
funzical wunzical.......2006-05-07
I really enjoyed learning hieroglyphics with Dr. Jan. Do not be fooled: they are not for the faint of heart. For those who are affrighted at Chinese and Japanese, hieroglyphics go even further toward multiplexing umpteen systems atop a single character set. But Dr. Jan endeavors to make it easy by using lively examples, color-coding some of the solutions, etc. If you have a strong memory and strong impetus, go for it. You will have a lot of fun and feel a tremendous sense of achievement.
Fantastic book.......2005-08-02
This is a great guide to learning to read from actual monuments and objects. I used the knowledge from the book to translate the faces of some Egyptian obelisks I saw while on vacation in Europe.
I recommend this book unequivocally.
